Spring Football 2018

Let’s take a moment from the grim-and-gritty world of Pitt basketball. The buyout skulduggery. The intrigue of who the next coach should be and/or will be.

A little lighter and breezier thing. Spring football practices. A time where about 4/5 of the fall roster is on-hand. Depth charts are theorized. Historic futures are projected. Optimism is rampant. And hopefully nobody gets hurt.

Let’s see. No tarps at Heinz Field. No Penn State after next year. No changes.

In the questions going into camp, the O-line is in flux. With a grad transfer coming in after spring practices — and expected to be a starter — the depth chart is very tentative. Alex Bookser and Jimmy Morrissey are the only returning starters. Lots of opportunity and lots of questions. Plus a brand new O-line coach.

Hmm. I don’t think I’ve been this concerned about the state of the O-line since the first year of Paul Chryst’s reign.

The other big area in flux — and by remarkable coincidence, also has a new coach — is the secondary. With Whitehead and Maddox gone, significant questions are there. Unlike the O-line, though, the depth is solid and it is more a question of who wins the spots.

Thanks to his solid first season as a starter, junior Dane Jackson should have one cornerback spot locked up. But opposite him, will it be sophomore Damarri Mathis or senior Phillipie Motley running with the first-team defense? Taller, more physical options are also there in sophomore Therran Coleman and Jason Pinnock.

The outlook at safety is similar. Narduzzi views junior Damar Hamlin as his starter on the “field” side (free safety), but replacing Jordan Whitehead should be a more wide-open endeavor for new defensive coordinator Randy Bates. Senior Dennis Briggs is a returning captain, Bricen Garner hasn’t played that spot as much, Phil Campbell and Jazzee Stocker are career backups so far, and redshirt freshman Paris Ford is the ultimate wild card.

And this is interesting. Paris Ford is going to be playing at cornerback this spring and Coleman will be moved to the “field safety” position. Presumably backing up Hamlin.

Jason Pinnock started opposite Dane Jackson at corner today.

According to an interview with the DB coach, Paris Ford had 2 or 3 INT’s at the CB position during the first Spring practice yesterday.

Big time player, making big time plays.

H2P!

Comment by Erie Express 03.13.18 @ 4:02 am

Was Paris Ford moved to CB from Safety because he couldn’t handle the complexity of the safety position? I may be reading too much into that move to CB.

I just can’t focus on football until this coaching search is over. My official prediction:

– Pitt goes hard at Hurley, but he goes to UConn.
– While Pitt has all its eggs in Hurley basket, Matta goes to UGA.
– Sean Miller isn’t actually interested or has minimal interest, stays at Arizona.
– Pitt scrambles, gets turned down for interviews by Cooley, Musselman, and Grant, since they know they weren’t in the top target group.
– Pitt ends up having to interview Becker, Otzelberger, Jent. Hire either Jent or Becker, and fans aren’t thrilled.
– We are stuck with four years of a coach that the fans aren’t against, but aren’t really behind either.

Saw on the PL board that Goodman called basically this scenario. We cannot afford the above to play out, but I genuinely believe it will.

Comment by Jon 03.13.18 @ 8:35 am

Jon,

Pitt should go hard after Hurley in my opinion; although I wouldn’t blame Hurley if he chose UConn for comfort reasons, his brother went all the way out to ASU, so who knows, maybe he’s not afraid to step up to a rebuilding job in the ACC, it’s a matter of how much confidence he has in himself.

Matta – Don’t really care, too many health concerns in my opinion. If he passed the health concern hurdle, he’s a good risk, but I haven’t seen anything to suggest that.

Miller – Don’t really care, unless the baggage is cleared, and we better be sure of it. Even so, he’s only a so-so coach, so he’d have to come here to recruit well (without cheating) to have a shot at being successful, or get a better staff.

Finally, I do believe there’s a loser mentality floating around, which explains the above scenarios playing out through fans’ heads- woe is us.

Comment by 1618mt 03.13.18 @ 11:53 am

pa1702 – I think it’s a matter of Paris being able to play multiple positions and the move allows Pitt to keep the best 4 to 5 DB’s on the field at the same time. I wouldn’t read anything more than that into the move. CFB is about getting your playmakers on the field.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.13.18 @ 12:41 pm

Tossing — I agree, just make him your nickel and get him on the field no matter what you call him, unless he’s a starter. Our DB depth has really grown since Duzz came on board, so hats off to him. Even though the D has alot of youth, it seems there’s alot of talent out there…as usual, gonna come down to coaching.

“Pitt using Fogler Consulting to assist in men’s basketball coaching search.” You can’t be serious. We’re going to drag out the hiring process with yet another firm. Pitt will pitt.

Comment by Pitt of Glory 03.13.18 @ 2:15 pm

Fogler Consulting Group (former Vanderbilt Coach) recommends that Pitt re-hire Kevin Stallings because it has taken so long that there are no experienced coaches left to hire.

Comment by JP 03.13.18 @ 2:50 pm

You guys crack me up. I stated this before, but of course they are using a search firm. It’s how they protect themselves and the people they are interviewing. Candidates can say they never spoke to Pitt and Pitt can say they never spoke to the candidate.

They do background checks, help prevent leaks and keep anonymity for all parties involved. The way Stalling was hired was an embarrassment but that’s not how all searches are performed. Often times, the AD provides a list of candidates they’re interested in and the firm reaches out on Pitt’s behalf acting only as an intermediary.

This is nothing to get upset with and if you thought Pitt, or any school, is not going to use a search firm you’re being naive. Sorry if that came across as aggressive but it’s just the way the sport works now. Rarely, is a search firm not involved and for good reason.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.13.18 @ 3:27 pm

Tossing
We know but for once it would have been nice if this had already happened. We know that she decided to go another route a couple of months ago so it would have been nice if this activity was taking place and that they had their guy already (maybe they do but it does not look that way). A prolonged search does no one any good. We are skeptical because we know how Pitt operates.

Comment by JP 03.13.18 @ 5:01 pm

JP – How do you the timeline when the search firm was hired? And how do you know they haven’t already put their bullseye on someone and this is just the formality of finalizing hiring process?

Pitt fans always assume the worst. I’m not asking anyone to assume the best either, but a neutral stance is perfectly acceptable. Just let the process play out.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.13.18 @ 7:04 pm

If ford had 2 out of 3 interceptions today, who threw them?

Comment by alcofan 03.13.18 @ 9:52 pm

I’m beginning to have concerns about the WR position – yesterday, Duzz was asked about the position and he named only three guys – Tre Tipton, Mo Ffrench and Taysir Mack (who must sit out for the year).

RaRa Lopes and Aaron Mathews were misteriously left off. RaRa was the best receiver on the field for Pitt last season.

My concern is that Duzz doesn’t see the true talent of a player, and thus that talent does not see the field.

Three case in points – K.Pickett, Q.Ollison and P.Ford – could there be others…

Comment by Erie Express 03.14.18 @ 4:29 am

About half of schools use search firms. Pitt can’t get enough of them. “At the same time, it raises questions about conflicts of interest and whether the money being spent actually helps more often than not.” THAT’s the problem we have with them. Not to mention the pace at which Pitt moves on these types of things. So yeah, I do believe it’s a bit of an issue because of what we just went through two years ago.

Comment by Pitt of Glory 03.14.18 @ 8:18 am

Pitt of Glory – It’s common practice. Most of the coaches tied to Pitt are in tournaments. There’s a reason things are moving slow. Unlike college football when coaches dip before bowl games, college basketball coaches coach until the end of the season.

What are you talking about.. Have you watched HCPN post practice interviews in past.. He never likes just throw out info on how well certain players are doing in camp.. And as far as him not seeing a players talent.. When he was asked about the QBs last year during the season he would randomly bring up Pickett’s name constantly without even being asked specifically about him.. And talk about how great Pickett was doing picking up the offense in practice.. As far as Paris Ford goes he came to fall camp last year late and was behind.. Did you want the coaching staff to just throw him out there and burn his redshirt like they did with Hamlin..

Comment by NickC 03.14.18 @ 12:32 pm

Fan is saying that Fogler is pushing Tom Crean. He supposedly met with Pitt on Tuesday. If they hire that jerk I am done. Cancel my season tickets that I did keep this year.

Comment by JP 03.14.18 @ 2:43 pm

Crean wouldn’t be my pick, I’d prefer Grant for sure, or a guy like him (young, successful HC), but we could obviously do a lot worse than Crean, annoyingness aside… Most fans would be/get behind him, if he started turning things around.

Comment by 1618mt 03.14.18 @ 2:49 pm

Cream was only 30 games over .500 in six seasons at IU. What makes anyone think he would do better here. Just asking!! The Fogler group got him hired at IU. If he gets hired it is no different than the Stallings hire. In fact Stallings had a better record at Vanderbilt than cream had at IU.

Comment by Jp 03.14.18 @ 5:46 pm

Jp – read the other boards. He inherited a decimated, post-probation team completely devoid of players, and got them into the ncaa ‘s 4 of the last 6 years there, he rebuilt a team from scratch. Again, I’m not advocating for Crean, but he’d be light years ahead of Stallings. My pick would still Grant, or someone with a similar credential path.

Comment by 1618mt 03.14.18 @ 5:58 pm

IU fired him. IU is recognised as a blue blood program. If he could not get it done there why do you think he would get it done here. Archie did nothing with his players this year. I just think it would be more of the same. It does not excite me. He would be one of my last picks.

Comment by Jp 03.14.18 @ 6:14 pm

He went to an elite 8 at Indiana and a final 4 at Marquette.

i’m not a fan because I think he’s a lunatic but he and Stallings should not even be mentioned in the same breath.

He’d be a good, safe, hire. Not exciting but I think he could win at Pitt.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.14.18 @ 6:22 pm

As posted elsewhere, he was here, but my understanding is he’s in bed with Fogler and Fogler will pimp him hard if for no other reason than it will create buzz around him for other teams.

I’m not completely convinced Hurley chooses UCON over Pitt. It might just come down to how much he has to rebuild. Pitt could possibly take him further, unless he plays the angle that he can make up ground quicker in a lesser conference.

I don’t like the idea of a Crean hire, but I don’t hate it either. To me it’s kind of a milk-toast hire and Pitt has made few of those over the years. But he’s a million miles away from Stallings.

just don’t wait until the dust settles – make a move soon.

Parker Stewart requests a transfer, as per the pg.

Comment by alcofan 03.14.18 @ 9:52 pm

I hope all u non thinking, over reacting, fair weather fans are happy. You helped create the new Boston College!! Parker Stewart, Danya Kingsby, and soon to be many more defections, due to assinine reactions and demands to remove stallings.None of the players are happy, which in it self should tell u something!!! Upitt and all your ilk, the ball is in your hands, now what? Many experts had stated that Pitt was on the right track, and predicted a middle of the pack acc finish next year.progress!!!!!Thanks for taking us back to a complete re build

Comment by Greg 03.14.18 @ 10:27 pm

Greg – It sucks losing the kid but let’s not pretend he was ever going to be all ACC. The only one overreacting is you. Dayna Kingsby is like the 30th ranked JUCO kid. Pitt will be alright. Showing dissatisfaction with our pocketbooks is the only recourse Pitt fans had. There was exactly one top 200 recruit on the roster … Marcus Carr at 101 on Rivals. Smh … Stallings was not the answer, man. The longer we kept him, the longer Pitt gets stuck in futility. Better to cut ties early while we are still in a rebuild.

55 – Yeah, Crean is a Folger guy. I don’t think Pitt will be in the running for Hurley. He leaked that he wants to go somewhere the pieces are already in place to win immediately … and a $3M contract.

Don’t count on that.

I’m curious if any other names pop up. It leaked early Crean wasn’t interested so I was a little surprised to see his name pop back up.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.14.18 @ 11:08 pm

If anyone can F this process up it would be Pitt if it is true that they knew in January that Stallings was gone they better have a replacement by Monday (assuming the new coach does not make the sweet 16). If it is an assistant they should have him already.
Crean is such a jerk I am sure he will be welcomed with open arms by the top donors. Can’t wait for this to play out. Surprise me PLEASE but I am not counting on it.

Comment by Jp 03.15.18 @ 3:26 am

I’m not a big fan of Crean but he’s an excellent coach. There are other things to be more upset at if they settle on Crean.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 03.15.18 @ 6:21 am

There will also be things to be upset at if they don’t AT LEAST get a guy like Crean. He’s not anywhere near the top of my list, but remember that there are other Stallings out there at other programs Forest Gumping their way through a middling career, looking for the next paycheck and hoping they fall into a good situation. It could be worse than Stallings. That’s hard for some here to believe, but a coach that put Pitt mid-pack every year with the occasional tournament run would probably satisfy the administration. It wouldn’t satisfy anyone around here, but it’s even harder to fire a guy who’s .502 in conference, puts enough butts in the seats to pay the bills and comes in under budget. 0-for-ACC was probably the best case scenario for fans – if Stallings would have gotten to the middle of the pack, Pitt might have never gotten rid of him, and I saw no evidence through his career that he was capable of anything more.

Comment by 55 03.15.18 @ 7:20 am

Greg – I’m sorry your dad is no longer our coach, but he got paid a lot of money for 2 years, so just sail off into the sunset and enjoy it. He was our basketball version of Paul Hackett though, so it was time to go, and he’ll be happier getting away from it all anyway.

Comment by 1618mt 03.15.18 @ 7:32 am

I don’t see how anyone could defend KS. In his first season, he coached what was an NCAA tournament team from the previous season to a 4 win ACC season. In his second season, after HE OVERHAULED the roster, and he distinguished himself in ACC play by being the only coach in all of Division 1 (351 Teams) to not win a conference game (0 for 19). This two year record of performance earned him his dismissal. For the record, I really like the freshmen that he brought in this year and don’t like hearing that we may loose them.
