Open Thread: UCSB-Pitt

Aw, hell I don’t know.

UC-Santa Barbara is in the Big West. They went 6-22 last year and fired their head coach. Joe Pasternack is now the guy. Pasternack had been the head coach at the University of New Orleans. Succeeding some guy named Buzz Williams. UNO folded their basketball program in 2011, and Pasternack became an assistant at Arizona under Sean Miller. He was also the associate head coach there.

The Gauchos are 1-0 after beating North Dakota State, 85-66.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Just want to see a Pitt team win a damn game. Montana plays Penn State tonight we will see where all these programs are at

Comment by HbgFrank 11.15.17 @ 7:38 pm

Pitt seems to have no interest in playing. Sleepwalking.

Comment by xfmrman 11.15.17 @ 7:39 pm

Good d frame.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.15.17 @ 7:44 pm

Down 6 at half to a surfing school?????????????????

Comment by alcofan 11.15.17 @ 7:47 pm

If you lose to a Grizzly Bear and a Gaucho it is time to turn off the lights and shut it down.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.15.17 @ 7:49 pm

Cam Johnson out for the yr with torn knee.

Comment by alcofan 11.15.17 @ 7:50 pm

Penn State leading the Grizz by 5 at halftime… Go Grizz !

Pitt playing better D. Good to see we have someone who can take it strong to the hoop. A lot of work to go…

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 8:18 pm

Offensive rebounds Gauchos 13 Pitt 2

Comment by alcofan 11.15.17 @ 8:19 pm

No chance for 2nd shot for Pitt.

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 8:29 pm

Playing better in the 2nd half, but still cannot sustain (or even establish much) momentum.

Comment by xfmrman 11.15.17 @ 8:37 pm

He was fouled…

Comment by classicsofpitt 11.15.17 @ 8:41 pm

Terrel Brown is 6’10” 240#.
He should act like it.

Comment by xfmrman 11.15.17 @ 8:43 pm

You can see why this team was 6-22 last yr.

Comment by alcofan 11.15.17 @ 8:45 pm

14-17 on FT’s is good. We need to start making some 3’s. Only 6-18.

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 8:47 pm

Weakest Pitt team in the paint since rotary dial phones…

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 8:49 pm

west coast legs giving out.

Comment by alcofan 11.15.17 @ 8:54 pm

Can’t leave “hairdo” unguarded…

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 8:55 pm

I’ll take it.

Comment by alcofan 11.15.17 @ 8:59 pm

Well, at least they improved in the 2nd half.
Much more effort, especially defense.

Comment by xfmrman 11.15.17 @ 9:01 pm

Nice win. At least this team seems like one another and together as a team. Last year was brutal….

But will we double the FB team in win total?

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 9:03 pm

They covered too. I hope a few people lost some money tonight.

Comment by Steve h 11.15.17 @ 9:03 pm

I can’t see them winning a game in Brooklyn.

Comment by xfmrman 11.15.17 @ 9:05 pm

Is it too late to get N.Dakota State on the schedule?

Comment by Erie Express 11.15.17 @ 9:05 pm

Held them to 24 in 2nd half maybe they learned something tonight

Comment by Steve h 11.15.17 @ 9:06 pm

Pitt will have to shoot 60% from the 3 to win a game in Brooklyn.

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 9:17 pm

We were 21-25 on Ft’s and UCSB was 10-22.

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 9:22 pm

It’s a start. Pitt needed to break the seal. HTP! I saw the 2nd half. At my kids basketball practice for the first half. Sound like I saw the good half 🙂

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.15.17 @ 9:49 pm

Some things from the box score that jumped out at me.

Peace (who may have burned a red-shirt) had 4 minutes and 3 TOs.
Milli (who had an excellent game) had 27 min to Carr’s 13
UCSB took 65 shots
Pitt took 46 (.538 from 2, .350 from 3)
84% FT

Comment by xfmrman 11.15.17 @ 9:49 pm

Redshirt was burned. I can’t fault Pitt on this one though. They need to figure something out in the paint.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.15.17 @ 9:51 pm

TT:
You did see the better half.
They looked lethargic in the first.

Comment by xfmrman 11.15.17 @ 9:57 pm

Say what you want about Pitt but you have to respect this. Fans have every right to be upset over the state of the program but I hope most remember it’s not the current group of players faults. The team culture has been sour for the last few years. It’s stuff like this that turns a program around.

Before someone twists my words. I’m implying it starts somewhere and seeing a kid practicing in an empty gym after a game is refreshing.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.15.17 @ 9:58 pm

TT:
He took a couple 3s tonite. Missed both. One was awful.
But I’m glad to see him working. He (and the rest of the team) needs to keep shooting.
If the can keep the percentages like the did tonite, but with greater volume….

Comment by xfmrman 11.15.17 @ 10:10 pm

He needs to sleep overnight in that gym. Did you see him shoot tonight?

Cam tore Meniscus – Back in 5-6 weeks.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.15.17 @ 10:24 pm

AgreeTT…You have to work hard to not like this group of kids…They play hard and as a team…I see a lot of potential for our FR and will enjoy the ride back to respectability for this team over the next few seasons.

Comment by HbgFrank 11.15.17 @ 11:00 pm

I missed the first half too….at church. I should have prayed for Lyke 😉

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 11:03 pm

The team seems close too. That’s a big change IMO.

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 11:04 pm

Dokish blocked me Twitter. LOL…he can’t take any opposing opinion…

Never said a thing political on his tweets.

Comment by Jackagain 11.15.17 @ 11:07 pm

Agree with you guys. This group of kids has come together at least personally, there doesn’t seem to be any egos and they all root for each other. And the 2nd half last night could have been a exhibition of the hardest-played defensive effort I’ve seen in a Pitt team since before Ashton Gibbs.

And I don’t think Peace’s redshirt was burned. It takes a certain percentage of games, usually they can play at least 2 or 3.

There were plenty of mistakes, and turnovers galore, but that’s teachable. I think in 4 years these guys might be an example of the senior-laden teams Dixon used to have.

And is Wilson-Frame the best transfer we’ve seen in forever?

Comment by KeyboardKev 11.16.17 @ 9:19 am

Darn I missed the 2nd half. First half was not good…same thing I saw against Montana…struggling to get space on offense, no team defense to speak of. Glad the second half was better!
