Pitt-Rice: Open Thread

12:00 ACC Digital Network Extra/ESPN3.

I’m rationalizing attending the Rice-Pitt game on Yom Kippur as its own form of atonement after what Pitt has done for the first 4 games.

This is a family game for me. My sister did her graduate and doctorate work at Rice (applied mathematics, and yes, she’s the smart one in the family) and her husband has a masters from the school.  They still live in Houston, and my parents moved down there a few years ago. They were fine during the hurricane and flooding, if you are wondering.

Pitt needs this game. Both as a win and something of a tonic. No one is expecting a loss, but another struggle would be a disaster. Whether Head Coach Pat Narduzzi would admit it or not.

This is a late happening scrimmage for Pitt. Trying to figure out what they have at certain positions (QB) and how good or bad things really are (secondary and O-line).

Expect a lot of substitutions and shuffling of players today.

I hate those white pants. Why can’t they wear the gold pants full time.

I hate the dark blue helmets and shirts go back to the old school colors

I’m watching the game on Fox Sports Southeast, horrible camera work and coordination between commercials and live action, but a nice start for the Panthers.

Finally getting to watch a Pitt Football Game. Saw OK State. But like I said.

Before you get TOO EXUBERANT over Browne or Narduzzi putting up a Win… keep in mind that Rice is a HORRIBLE Football Team.

Only thing worse… Pitt’s Uniforms. Who is this Team?

Bostic is a great radio colorman.osburn out with sickness.

Yep I agree this team should take nothing for granted.

They woke up and got their mojo back, nice way to build their confidence.

A win is always welcome, but they failed to show any ability to run consistently. It will be surprising if they win two more this season.

Comment by 2$Chuck 09.30.17 @ 4:15 pm

Run game was weak but it’s nice to know if teams stuff the box there is still a fighting chance in the air. Both the O and D lines were still off today though and both have been the root of the problems on both sides of the ball.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 09.30.17 @ 6:15 pm

When you win a game easily that you were expected to win easily, does it matter how you won? Were we expecting 400 yards passing, 300 yards rushing, and 70 points?

What I saw was a coaching staff not stubbornly running into a defense stacked to stop the run and throwing the ball all over the field. Good decision.

Comment by HbgFrank 09.30.17 @ 7:29 pm

Offensive line cannot open holes and when some did open up , running backs missed them. Against a good defense Browne will not have the time to get to many throws off. This will be the case for every future game.
A question of time as to when the 2 back up QB’s will leave the team. McVitte is playing a position”s2

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.30.17 @ 10:07 pm

McVette was recruited to play QB, coach has him on kick off and punt team. DiNucci pretty much told he is not good enough so his 2 years are shot. Most likely will look for another place to play.
This is not a good football team. Syracuse will run all over them next week.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.30.17 @ 10:11 pm

Also, I agree about the white uniforms, when did White become part of our school colors? Talk about lack of team identity, will the real school colors please show up? lol

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.30.17 @ 10:14 pm

Biggest game of the yr this week.

Comment by alcofan 10.01.17 @ 7:54 am

HgbFrank – agreed. The coaching is fair to criticize this season but I thought the coaching was spot on for this game. Less stubbornness than usual. I liked the 4th down call too. There is no excuse for why Pitt can’t pick up a 1st down against a team like Rice in that situation.

Dinucci would have to go to a MAC or subdivision school to play and he would still have to fight for his job. This was a kid about to go to Penn but changed his mind the last minute. I doubt he goes anywhere. He gave up Ivy League dreams to be a backup at Pitt. He knew the deal.

MacVittie is eligible to play so they’re getting him on the field because he’s an athlete. No different than Rutherford playing WR while waiting his turn. MacVittie only had 1 year of HS experience. He shouldn’t be our starting QB yet. He’ll get his first real chance to compete next spring and summer.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.01.17 @ 9:35 am

Then why did Pitt recruit MacVittie as a quarterback and why did DiNucci receive a offer to play quarterback? Something is very wrong when you recruit 2 guys to play QB and now they are not playing that position. Poor choices, poor coaching and poor recruiting again.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 10.01.17 @ 11:51 am

I hope the Browne haters are gone

Comment by DocJlk 10.01.17 @ 1:22 pm

Add a white jersey with blue block numerals.. maybe a plain white helmet…

Comment by BigB 10.01.17 @ 2:57 pm

They added Nooch because Pitt needed depth and missed on their other QB targets. He had already agreed to go to Penn, who can’t even offer athletic scholarships.

McVittie was recruited as a QB b/c of talent and potential. You get your best athletes on the field. That’s what Pitt is doing this season with McVittie. He’s done redshirting. He can play and he’ll compete next season for the starting QB spot. He may lose but he’ll be in the competition.

I’m not sure what you’re arguing? I simply told you that Nooch wouldn’t transfer and why … and why McVittie is playing.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.01.17 @ 5:19 pm

We need to stop doing this to Quarterbacks. Pick a guy who will take you thru the next 3 or 4 years.
We always seem to be picking players with “talent and potential” and never see anything happen. You either have it or you don’t. This is why Pitt is a doormat in the ACC and will continue to be. We will be having this same conversation next year at this time. Penn State, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech will be losses again.
This program should be heading upward this year and there is no sign of that happening so far. Next year will be like starting all over again trying to pick a QB. Pitt should be putting their best players out there regardless if they are freshmen or not. They have a new freshman QB on the team, when will decide to use him, in his junior year? This total confusion related to quarterbacks is sending a bad message to any prospect. “Don’t go to Pitt, they don’t have a plan for you”. I would not be surprised if we don’t take another transfer next year.
Nick Patti from New Jersey is a committed recruit for 2018. Nick has offers from Albany, BC, Cinn., Columbia, Dartmouth, Temple, Rutgers, Toledo and Yale among other lower level colleges. Sounds like another “Diamond in the rough”. LOL. In the words of a second rate coach “our goal is to win championships”. Not sure where but it will not happen in the ACC.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 10.01.17 @ 8:15 pm

So Pitt beats Penn state and last years National Champion and they are a doormat? WHY FOLLOW THEM THEN, GET THE FREAK OUT! Knew this would be a transition year but really underestimated how the o-line and d-line would respond. But you can see the young talent growing b-4 our eyes. Only the Okie State game is a burn the tape response. See Pitt actually plays real competition unlike say VT who finally played a real D-1 team yesterday and what happened? Yup the L! Next years Panther QB’s were wanted by LSU and North Carolina. Your posting sends a message to all people ” Dont know -hit, and a’int got a clue! Happy for Max to get the chance to show off his skills. Kind of sweet with Sammy boy fumbling the USC game away against Washington State. Hail to Pitt! UPone

Comment by UPone 10.01.17 @ 9:02 pm

Offensive line has not improved at all. We had to pass against Rice, very little running game. You are correct I would rather see Pitt play good competition, problem is we lost badly, not even in the games. I do think the secondary is beginning to gel. Max did have a hell of a game but be realistic, look who the competition was. He cant handle the pass rush that a good team gives him then is forced to throw dump off passes. It is not his fault he gets little protection.
I have been going to Pitt games for over 50 years and have seen some unbelievable college football and some very lean periods, this is a lean period.
PS. Virginia Tech is still ranked this week and will most likely beat the hell out of Pitt. Not being a smart ass but where is Pitt ranked this week?
