Morning, all. The first turnpike AM run into the sun and the new season. Feel the optimism, excitement and potential. Followed by those moments of doubt, dread and cynicism.

We’re all trying not to look past this game to the one the following week, right?

If you haven’t read the pieces on starting center Jimmy Morrissey’s journey to Pitt as a walk-on to scholarship starter. Enjoy them.

I never got around to mentioning the team captains this year. Jester Weah and Avonte Maddox were not surprises. Max Browne getting a captaincy was a mild surprise given his transfer status, but as the starting QB it has a certain NFL-logic. Dennis Briggs earning the final captain spot, just seems cool. A local kid, not heavily recruited that has worked hard to earn a starting spot on the defense.

Final bit of good news (sort of). We got through the Friday afternoon on a holiday weekend without a bad news dump. After this past spring, that’s a plus.

Rain, rain stay away. H2P!

Speaking of dread and cynicism…with this weather I fear the crowd is going to be awful. Even by Pitt standards. Shame.

Same old secondary

Second time Weah was mugged

Comment by gc 09.02.17 @ 1:07 pm

We look slow and the DBs still looked lost. I hope we get it together before next two weeks or we will get destroyed…..

Comment by Trapper 09.02.17 @ 1:39 pm

Browne appears to float all of his passes.

Comment by Duggie 09.02.17 @ 1:39 pm

Weah drop and bad pass from Browne, lead to punt.

Comment by alcofan 09.02.17 @ 2:01 pm

O’neil gets beat for sack.

Comment by alcofan 09.02.17 @ 2:20 pm

Very meh so far. AJ Davis redshirt blown. Give the kid the ball…

Comment by Pap76 09.02.17 @ 2:25 pm

Now we know why Browne and DiNucci were in a battle in camp

Comment by Steve h 09.02.17 @ 2:35 pm

1st and goal from the 3 and nothing. Browne been sacked twice by my count and we have yet to get to their QB. Yeah,
I’m concerned…

Comment by Pap76 09.02.17 @ 2:37 pm

Comment by Pap76 09.02.17 @ 2:43 pm

Comment by gc 09.02.17 @ 3:26 pm

Lol

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 3:26 pm

Browne sucks! This guy has been in college 5 years now and still can’t throw down field. The O line sucks. The D sucks as a whole. Duzz should play for the future and put young guys everywhere

Comment by Steve h 09.02.17 @ 3:31 pm

Ugh. I can’t add anything else.

Comment by JoeP 09.02.17 @ 3:31 pm

absolute garbage

In fact, real garbage tastes better than the excrement Pitt lays on the field.

Comment by TX Panther 09.02.17 @ 3:42 pm

Did not see the Game except for the very last minute and OT.

Based on the numbers and comments, seems Max Browne lived up to my expectations.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 3:57 pm

The OL pass protection was worse than I expected. Game plan was strange. This dink and dunk to the RBs shit has to go. Pitt has acceptable WR/TE talent. Throw to them. I don’t like Ollison as the feature back. He def should have a role just not as a starter. For an offense built on Jet Sweeps and speed he’s too plodding. Not having a mobile QB hurts this offense too. I think Browne has a short leash. Pitt didn’t do Kessman any favors either. First ever attempt should not have been from the hash or with the pressure of a game winner. Kickers need confidence. Defense rotated players too much. CBs made better plays on the ball. There is hope. LBs were to blame today. This was just a very odd first game. Big boy football starts next week (Insert inappropriate Penn state joke)

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 09.02.17 @ 4:00 pm

Not sure about the Max Browne hate…this game played out exactly like game 1 of last year, in that I have the same overarching thought…WTF this is supposed to be a top-level OL? Maybe, maybe 4 of the pass attempts did not have an immediate/near-immediate breakthrough. Browne almost never had more than 2 seconds…just like in game 1 for Peterman last year. They spent passing plays avoiding sacks. Peterman turned out OK last year…and so did our OL. Lets hope history repeats itself.

Comment by DD 09.02.17 @ 4:02 pm

“DiNucci Time” is a comin’

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 4:17 pm

Just another year!

Comment by Oklahomeboy 09.02.17 @ 4:17 pm

Since Tossing Thabeets brought it up, I’ll insert my Penn State joke: I’m working on my “game day” T-shirts for the Pitt – Penn State game. It’ll show Spanier – Curley – Schultz wearing sunglasses and orange prison jumpsuits with “THREE BLIND MICE” underneath and a photo of JoePa in his omnipresent dark tinted shades with “AND ONE BLIND RAT” underneath. I hope everyone has enjoyed these last 51 weeks.

Comment by John71fromMaryland 09.02.17 @ 4:36 pm

Pitt lookin’ ahead to next week… OUCH!

Comment by MariettaMike 09.02.17 @ 4:55 pm

I just pray that next week isn’t a national embarrassment. Pitt is too inexperienced, too un-athletic and devoid of elite talent, and too stupid in coaching. Its SOP and shall forever be AMEN. Until the religion (culture) changes. We’re the candy in the box of chocolates that nobody wants.

Comment by TX Panther 09.02.17 @ 5:25 pm

Why in the world would this Pitt Team want to be looking ahead to next week?

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 5:30 pm

even with the suspensions, i dont think this team or program is very good

Comment by goalie44 09.02.17 @ 5:33 pm

You guys are hilarious. I mean really, Narduzzi played vanilla. Maybe too vanilla, but that was the plan and we knew it going in. Did you really expect they’d be a finished product already?

Let’s see what the next 3 games bring.

Comment by Velvil 09.02.17 @ 5:41 pm

Velvil… you’re new. Wait.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 5:46 pm

you don’t play vanilla at the expense of almost losing the game. that’s just dumb

Comment by goalie44 09.02.17 @ 5:46 pm

One thing for sure, next week better not come down to a Field Goal.

Make that ANY week.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 5:49 pm

I’m thinking the team was looking ahead to next year and not next week. We may win only 2 games.

Comment by TX Panther 09.02.17 @ 6:10 pm

didn’t watch the game…checked in from time to time on my phone. up 21-0 and feeling good…what happened? henderson and yeah 1 catch each? well, a w is a w…you don’t get extra credit for style points…next 2 weeks scary!

Comment by Jerry S 09.02.17 @ 6:24 pm

Right on, Steve h. Maybe that talk about a competition was not BS after all.

Comment by 2$Chuck 09.02.17 @ 6:40 pm

Narduzzi yet to show he has what it takes to be a HEAD Coach.

Maybe that’s why it took so long.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 6:42 pm

Pitt layed off second half and almost blew it (pun intended). It’s next week that the players had on their mind. It happens quite often in college football. BUT yuns Blatherites know this.

Comment by MariettaMike 09.02.17 @ 6:43 pm

He’s got the EMOTIONAL thing down.

As for that COOL logical, analytical thing?

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 6:44 pm

Not to mention recruiting. Yet to be determined.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 6:48 pm

Let’s see what Vegas has to be say about next week.

That will say something about where things are headed.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 6:50 pm

MariettaMike – Yep. The usual crew being overly dramatic. Definitely some concerns but the biggest was the game plan. Browne’s mobility is a concern but I expect the OL to be better once Morrissey is out of the lineup and Bookser is back. LB play was not good.

All Pitt did was run Pitt’s base run offense from last season. Zero creativity … And it almost cost them the game.

I don’t think this is the norm. It was definitely not inspiring though. It definitely creates some anxiety for what’s to come. Shame on Duzz for this type of approach to a season opener. Just go out and play to your identity. This hiding the playbook nonsense is for the birds.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 09.02.17 @ 7:06 pm

This is the kind of game that keeps the fans at home. Pittsburgh fans are spoiled, they won’t waste their time to watch eggs being laid. When you are up by three TD’s it should be a rout. While I agree with the fact that we used the turtle offense in the second half, it showed some serious weaknesses in our line, and our QB. Brown is immobile, and I am not very impressed with his arm. Looks to be a decent game manager, but if he can’t throw down field, or make plays with his legs, we are in trouble.

I thought Ollie had a strong game, but he needs a hole to run through, and the line disappointed at times. It will be good to have Bookser back.

The question is, was it vanilla by choice or is that who we are? It was apparent why Browne lost his job last year. College QB’s need to run, at least a little to get away from pressure.

My biggest fear was realized in that our D-line could not put any pressure on their QB. If this persists, the next two QB’s will light us up without mercy. Especially with wide receivers running wide open.

No doubt the dismissals and suspensions really hurt the defense.

Comment by gc 09.02.17 @ 7:57 pm

@pittofdreams – Nope, I’ve been on this board off and on since Chas started it. And class of ’77 so I’ve seen a few games and some horrible coaches. Way too early to panic. But sure would’ve been nice to have a blow out and at least one FG.

Comment by Velvil 09.02.17 @ 8:39 pm

Gc – 1000% vanilla.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 09.02.17 @ 8:51 pm

well vanilla almost cost us..how dumb. if we lose to ygst, then the season is over.

Comment by goalie44 09.02.17 @ 9:06 pm

Like I said… didn’t see the Game for the most part.

Anyway, we’ll learn more next week. No excuses.

Let’s hope non-Vanilla has some flavor to it.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.02.17 @ 11:08 pm

Pitt will get killed next week by a PSU team that has waited all year for revenge. The good news is the play by Browne in the next two games is likely to result of him being replaced by the GT game. The bad news is that his replacement DiNucci is unlikely to fair any better at the position.—-Giving Pickett the chance is probably the only hope for the offense this season. I’m just not sure that either Narduzzi or Watson even realizes that fact.

Comment by pa1702 09.03.17 @ 4:30 am

I think we will beat Rice.
As for beating anyone else…gonna be a long season, followed by a long hoops season.
Zoiks!

Comment by Gasman 09.03.17 @ 7:41 am

Folks, Let’s give Pitt some credit, they won. Think about what vitriol would be spewed on this blog had they lost. Save it for next week.

Comment by MariettaMike 09.03.17 @ 8:25 am

locks in on one receiver and throws to that receiver regardless of coverage? Check

Inability to move in pocket? Check

Makes bad decisions under pressure? Check

90% of pass completions under 5 yards in the air? Check

TINO HAS BEEN REINCARNATED in the form of Max Brown.

I hope to god I am wrong but watching Max yesterday seemed all to familiar especially when he tossed the ball away when he could have picked up 3 to 5 yards by walking up-field with it.

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 09.03.17 @ 8:28 am

Reportedly, Browne (aka Minimus Browneus)said he through the ball away because that’s what he does at the end of plays at practice.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.03.17 @ 9:20 am

Is it just me, but I see 56 comments, but I can only see 6 on my screen. Where are the rest?

Comment by Taxing Matters 09.03.17 @ 9:57 am

Develop the QB we recruited…If he doesn’t improve next week time to move on from brown…Itll be a wasted year of development for next years starter….we’ll go through the same shit next year at the position

Comment by Kvah 09.03.17 @ 10:24 am

@Taxing Matters: It’s not just you. I get this a lot here these days.

I’m starting to worry how long it might take Narduzzi to realize that he’s not going to get the quality of kids he’s used to, and he may never get them. Yesterday’s game underscores the fact that we’re not really getting talent any better than that of the D1 AA schools. I watched the Florida State – Alabama game and it really is amazing when you consider the different levels that most of those kids are playing at.

Granted – YSU is the best of the best in 1AA ball, taking it down to the championship game where they lost yo James Madison -those kids know how to compete and win. Still, D1A talent should be able to offset most of that, and the coaching should take care of the rest. We didn’t get a lot of either. Sometimes I wonder if everyone would ultimately be happier if Pitt just went IAA – but then I guess we’d just get the bottom of that AA kids anyway and nothing would change.

Comment by 55 09.03.17 @ 1:27 pm

That he’s used to getting? MSU recruiting classes are very similar to Pitt’s.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 09.06.17 @ 12:42 pm

And yet MSU has had far more success…. is our coaching really THAT bad?
