Working Through the Offense

A week and a half until the Blue-Gold scrimmage, and the pretense of who will be the starting QB in September remains comfortably intact.

“It’s good that you (reporters) don’t know,” Narduzzi said when asked if there was any separation in the quarterback competition. “It means we have no leaks in the office.”

No leaks and no fake news about the play of those vying to replace Nathan Peterman: redshirt sophomore Ben DiNucci, redshirt freshman Thomas MacVittie, freshman early enrollee Kenny Pickett and senior graduate transfer Max Browne.

“We have four very functional quarterbacks,” Narduzzi said.

While Head Coach Pat Narduzzi isn’t going to tip his hand, his offensive coordinator at least hints at the top-two.

In speaking with new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson, it’s clear that the two oldest signal-callers are the leaders in the clubhouse — not that MacVittie or early enrollee Kenny Pickett are playing poorly.

“I think the two older guys have [separated themselves], because of experience,” Watson said of Browne and DiNucci. “Both of them have really upped the ante the last week. I think what we saw happen during that transition is the two younger kids followed, so it was really good. It’s been really healthy in that room. They work well together, and they compete hard against each other.”

Browne still is expected to be the starter come fall when it’s all said and done, but DiNucci and MacVittie may jockey for the backup role throughout the season. For now, the extra year of experience has been a boost for DiNucci, who stepped in for an injured Nathan Peterman in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Narduzzi and Watson have both praised Kenny Pickett, but barring multiple injuries and/or transfers it seems highly improbable Pickett does and anything but redshirt this season.

This ESPN.com piece on Pitt building depth.

“We’ve got more quarterbacks that can actually get in a game and maybe do something. Last year, we were just too young,” Narduzzi said. “What happened to us in the bowl game, we didn’t have another guy to put in there once Nathan went down. Our backup comes in and throws two picks, so it’s a problem where you can’t play a backup all year, and he gets thrown in a big bowl game and doesn’t get it done.”

One more plus to the four scholarships sharing the reps during spring practice: they are evenly spaced out, class-wise. Browne is a senior; DiNucci is a redshirt sophomore; MacVittie is a redshirt freshman and Pickett is a true freshman.

That is the type of set-up that is ideal for any position, most especially quarterback. While it is true Pitt has relied heavily on transfers to fill the void over the last several seasons, the hope is that coaching stability will now lead to more recruiting successes and players being developed in the program.

Part of the reason Pitt was so devoid of quarterbacks when Narduzzi arrived was because of the revolving door at quarterback.

Even if Browne wins the starting job, he will only be at Pitt for a year and the Panthers need to solidify their future at a position that has lacked stability and depth. Peterman and Tom Savage before him ended up being NFL-caliber players. Moving forward, it would be ideal for Pitt not to have to rely so much on the transfer route for the quality it desires at the position.

I think in the modern college football game, this sort of depth/experience problem is not uncommon and can be expected to happen in cycles for teams. The QB remains one of the unique positions in football. Every other spot can have a regular rotation or depth with opportunities to shine even if not a starter.

Not the quaterback. And in the present time, where transferring is not stigmatized — and it shouldn’t be — a quarterback who feels blocked, potentially passed or doesn’t think he should be waiting has more opportunity to look elsewhere.

In theory, Browne wins the job and starts this year. Pickett redshirts, and MacVittie is the back-up along with DiNucci. Next year MacVittie earns the starting job with Pickett the back-up.

But what if Pickett wins the job next year as a redshirt freshman and does well? MacVittie — a 4-star recruit — sees himself perpetually blocked. Why wouldn’t he look elsewhere for an opportunity? And then Pitt faces concerns at QB depth again. I am in no way saying this is going to happen. I’m saying  depth at the QB spot for all but the top, deepest programs is a perpetual concern with only brief interludes of seeming depth and stability.

Certainly, Pitt had different issues contributing to the QB depth issues, but we have seen it happen to Pitt (and elsewhere) even with stability at the coaching spot.

Depth is showing elsewhere on the offense, though. Like on the offensive line where there is plenty of competition to make the depth chart.

Of Pitt’s 36 returning lettermen, none is a backup offensive lineman, but one or more of them might have to play a significant role at some point.

Say hello to Jerry Drake, Jimmy Morrissey, Tony Pilato, Brandon Ford and Justin Morgan.

Drake is a freshman, early enrollee. Morrissey is a walk-on who turned down scholarships at the Ivy and Colonial level. Morgan and Ford are redshirt freshmen and Tony Pilato is a redshirt sophomore. A young group vying to make the depth chart to be sure.

As for targets for the QB, there hasn’t been a lot of talk about the receivers. There was a good piece about how much competition there is, and what a loose, fun group they are. Though, when you think about how far Jester Weah came from last year and Quadree Henderson’s bursting onto the scene. I begin to think we have horribly underrated the job Wide Receivers Coach Kevin Sherman has done.

Still, beyond the OC casually noting that Jester Weah and Aaron Mathews are the #1 and #2 WRs lately. More of the attention is on the singular TE, Chris Clark. Mostly healthy, probably has his head on straight, and the only TE on the roster this spring.

There’s no question Clark, who sat out last season because of transfer rules and a knee injury, has the physical build (6-foot-6, 255 pounds) and speed to be productive in the passing game.

“(Tight ends) coach (Tim) Salem talks about how strong his hands are,” Narduzzi said.

Narduzzi, however, is getting tired — if not annoyed — with answering questions about Clark’s blocking ability.

“I didn’t have any question about him blocking, period,” Narduzzi said Tuesday. “It seems like there’s a lot of questions about his blocking. He’s a big, strong, physical tight end who can block and run.”

Those characteristics have been constant with Clark, although he admits his blocking needs to get better. It’s his mindset and attitude he spent the past year trying to improve.

“Last year, everyone will tell, coach Narduzzi and all them, I struggled a lot learning the offense,” Clark said. “I had a really hard time. More of it was my attitude knowing I couldn’t play. I was real lazy about certain things.

“I’m a totally different person now. He even tells me. I’m not getting any MAs (missed assignments).”

Kind of a strange story. It starts as a typical puff-piece. Highly sought recruit who struggled to make up his mind about schools — decommitting twice and quitting UCLA after one game — becoming more mature and humble. Yet Clark, himself, takes the story in a different direction.

Rather then the typical stuff about how he gained a new appreciation while sitting out both because of transfer and injury; Clark freely admits that he still struggled with focus and effort for the learning of the system. There is a pleasant openness and honesty to it, that he needed others to get him back on track.

Teammates and staff members kept on him, convincing him to be patient about the process and reminding him his time would come. Now, if anything, he just wants to avoid bugging coach Pat Narduzzi too much — texting him about what he can do better, how he’s progressing in his blocking in the run game.

That’s the goal for Clark, who looks forward to seeing how he fares Saturday at Heinz Field when the Panthers have their first scrimmage of spring camp. He’s something of an old rookie, as he’ll turn 22 a few weeks into the season, but he also has just one collegiate appearance under his belt.

And, of course, a whole lot of time waiting in between his second one.

“I’m just so anxious to be able to play college football,” he said. “It’s been so long since I actually competed in a meaningful game. I’m just super anxious to start playing. It kind of stinks just sitting on the sidelines and stuff.”

The talent is unquestioned. The desire/focus/maturity that he claims is there, cynically though, it remains to be seen as compared to all past actions to this point.

Dare I say, if Matthews makes anywhere near the leap this year that Weah did last year (which would be far less of a shock), then we may finally have a lot of talent again at the WR position, especially since Tipton played really well last year until he got hurt at the end of the season (or for some odd reason they stopped throwing to him, I can’t recall).

I do think that this program (as with many programs) is really hungry for a talented young QB to take the reins one of these years. Barring injury, it won’t be this year, but I think in the back of their minds what many fans fear is that Dinucci will win the #2 spot and we will go another year without any higher ceiling guys (MacVittie or Pickett) getting any real game reps. But whoever the #2 QB is, even if its DiNucci, I hope he gets some live game experience this year…

We need a D that can hold the line and let us get a score spread to permit some # 2 players getting time in the game. Has not happened in a while.H2P

DiNucci could not get any reps last year as the defense kept our opponents in the game. Syracuse was the best example of the offense having to play lights out to keep pace with a sieve-like D.

Oops, sorry @Pitt60. I did not mean to jump your post.

For God sake guys! What do you expect after two yrs. We have a football coach and we have a good football team. Getting better with each recruiting class. Sit back and enjoy the ride up.

Of course if you live near PITT buy season tickets. If not plan a couple of road trips to catch a few games. For me I wish we still had Maryland in the ACC.

Basketball which is the main thing in metro NYC is another matter. We will have to suffer for a few yrs at least.

Stallings was my nightmare from the start.

However, I had confidence in Barnes because of his background coming from Spokane. I thought he had character. He didn’t. He was no better than the bums I grew up with in Brooklyn.

That man screwed us!

That’s was the software does these days. If you are looking online for tires and click on a few web sites, then for the next week or so, you will be see tire ads popping up. Pittscript, you are either a closest PSU fan, or may have done some type of search looking for tickets for the Pitt game.

If you see a Penn State Ad on the site you should click on it. Chas gets money and it costs Penn State $1.

Having four functioning QB’s not nearly as good as having one really great one. This team will only go as far as our QB takes us.

Comment by gc 04.07.17 @ 9:04 am

We got lucky last year that Nate Peterman stayed healthy. There in no guarantee that will happen again. Even in Pitt’s 76 National Championship year, two quarterbacks Heygood and Cavagot injured and Yewic, a walk-on, played two games. The quarterback is the most important position on the field and you need to have guys ready to come in to play.

What’s with the drinking water at Pitt? Just read Pitt women’s team lost a star basketball player to Penn State.

I know it’s way early.. But I am excited about pitt-PSU game this year. I live in the heart of PSU country (Wilkes-Barre). I am sick and tired of hearing.. “If we played later in the season…” (to which I say “but you didn’t”) and also so tired of their arrogance on the upcoming SEPT 9 game. THey feel it’s a foregone conclusion that PSU wins that. Just got 6 tix for the game (it’s my 17th anniv and wife and kids coming). I think this will be another close game that Pitt will win. McSorley is good, but he can throw several interceptions. Barkley worries me, but we also have some great RBs. Give me more ammo to fight the obnoxious Nitters…

Comment by alcofan 04.08.17 @ 10:32 am

I really hope MacV shows something in spring and fall practice. Dinucci is a nice local story, but he doesn’t have the natural tools to be a starting D1 Power 5 QB as shown by the schools recruiting him. Star ratings don’t mean everything, but they also aren’t meaningless.
I think one of the 3 Frosh TEs are going to step up and make a mark this year. Besides, we have O’Neil at LT who will be good for 2-3 TDs again!!

I believe the only hope the D has is for the D-line to improve dramatically and help a young, size and talent-challenged DB positions.

I think we may be deep enough to have a 6-8 man DL rotation which hopefully puts pressure on QBs for both halves. Seemed like Price and friends were spent by the 4th quarter and QBs had all the times in the world to pick the DBs apart last year.

McSoreloser was one of the beneficiaries. Hope he sees lots of puffy white clouds in the Pitt game.

@taxing

My concern about McV is his limited experience in high school, he has potential and the physical tools. If he can’t win the job during the 18/19 season he is probably an afterthought because it looks like they are recruiting a good number of QBs. This spring practice so far he is 3rd string but that could change depending on performance.

Comment by WLAT 910 radio and the big beat! 04.08.17 @ 7:28 pm

Narduzzi hypes up MacVittie every chance he gets. Pitt’s recruiting QB’s better than ever right now so I wouldn’t worry too much even if he can’t win the starting gig. One thing to keep in mind, MacVittie is a dual threat QB so the offense will most likely look a lot different once he’s under center. More QB option, designed runs, etc. Let it play out naturally.

I think Dokish is coming off as an idiot in his support of Stallings. The following tweet makes no sense whatsoever for a few reasons:

Chris Dokish? @ChrisDokish 2h2 hours ago
From multiple excellent sources, the plan from the beginning for Cam Johnson’s dad was for Cam to redshirt, graduate early, and transfer.
———————————————

1, Cam’s dad a Pitt alum,
2. Cam’s dad lives in Pgh area, and further
3. when Cam committed 3 years ago, Pitt had a 26-10 record and lost to #1 seeded UF in the 2nd Round … and there was no sign that the program would descend at all

Comment by wbb 04.10.17 @ 11:48 am

@wbb Isn’t that something with Dokish? Dokish believes that Johnson took advantage of Pitt because he wasn’t heavily recruited, was allowed to develop his talent, and then transferred once it was clear that things were headed downward.

It seems in Dokish’s world if a P5 school gives an under-recruited kid a chance and the kid exceeds expectations then that kid owes the school all of his/her eligibility. This also completely ignores the coaching change, AD change, chancellor change, or changes on the academic side since Johnson committed.

What goes around comes around. I just noticed that I was drinking water from an old Pitt plastic (pop) drink cup from the 1970’s and noticed the Pitt scrip on the side and Panthers on the other. “Pitt starts spring football with ‘best and deepest’ QB room in years”

Comment by NickC 04.10.17 @ 6:56 pm

The Duzz is putting it together, time is here! I see a minimum 9 wins, more like 10 wins. Should’ve easily had 9 wins last year. Main question is the young depth and how fast it comes together. Question marks: OL is awesome, depth is young with no experience but love Pilato, Ford, Hargrove, Morgan and Jerry Drake will be an All American and maybe Morgan too. Solid stable of backs and receivers, look out, lot’s of depth and talent. Tight end, Clark has to come through big time, good transfer in Flanagan, solid 3 freshmen but biggest question mark on offensive side.

Defense is the big question and how an incredible amount of young talent comes together. DL is solid but with much unproven depth, Camp, Watts, Jones, Weaver, Wheeler, Pugh, just a sick amount of studs and potential. Obviously the most glaring question’s revolve around linebackers and DB’s. However, I love the amount of talented young DB’s and not as concerned, even after last years disaster. I like the LB’s but a little nervous. Wirginis is very good, as well as Brightwell. Wasn’t sold on Idowu and we need Zeise, Pine, McKee and Reynolds to really step up.

Comment by PTG 04.10.17 @ 9:54 pm

Cam Johnson had to do what is best for Cam Johnson. In sports your personal ceiling is usually affected by the guys you play with.

To get better you need to play with better players. Cam has a lot better shot at pro ball if he plays at a top ten team. At Pitt he would be double and triple teamed., in front of a half empty Pete. The team would be over-matched in most games. Playing at Kentucky or Arizona, he will just be one of the guys, on a winning team. Sad to see him go, but it is what is best for him and loyalty only goes so far.

Comment by gc 04.11.17 @ 9:00 am

gc – agreed. Cam has pro aspirations. Playing at Pitt the next two years will not help him. I’m not a fan of Stallings but that’s not a knock on him either. It’s just the reality of the situation. Cam being the man on a bad team sounds intriguing but it’s not an ideal situation to be in.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 04.11.17 @ 10:40 am

The Spring game should tell us whether we have a QB, the most crucial issue going into the season.

Savage and Peterman were both pretty good at not making turnovers or taking sacks. Hopefully Browne is good at protecting the ball.

Really want to see the improved team speed this year.

Comment by gc 04.11.17 @ 10:49 am

I got the stupid Pedo State ad as well.

Comment by Pittastic 04.11.17 @ 12:59 pm

GC – I suspect you’re right regarding the Spring game, there will be a lot of eyes on the QBs. We know Browne is the starter, but still curious as to how he will look this early in the process… Probably even more curious about how the backups stack up. On a related note, it would be nice one of these years to get a QB who is mobile, but it looks like we’ll have to wait another year for that.

Cam Johnson is a good kid with some potential due to his size and shooting ability, I don’t blame him one bit for leaving, especially given the program/Stallings debacle. That said, I really don’t believe our team will be any worse off next year given the mix of players being brought in. That doesn’t change the fact the Cam has every right to do what he thinks is best for him, but I just don’t buy us being a ‘worse’ team next year, even given the vast amount of unknowns at this point.

Comment by 1618mt 04.11.17 @ 1:10 pm

1618mt, I don’t see how a team with all Juco’s and freshman won’t be worse than a team with 4 seniors and Cam Johnson. None of these guys have played together and none have played for Stallings. This is the ACC we are talking about. They will feast on us next year. We may not win a game.

Comment by gc 04.11.17 @ 2:24 pm

Oh man, it can be a lot worse. No top 100 recruits coming in. A couple of journeyman JUCO’s. Praying for a HR in the grad transfer market. Next season will be rough. Stallings needs a couple 25-50 ranked players for the 2018 class which would make 2019 the first respectable season. If he doesn’t land at least some top 100 recruits in 2018, it’s not going to get much better anytime soon.

Pitt basketball is in rough shape. No way around it.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 04.11.17 @ 3:12 pm

Oh, it absolutely can get worse next year. I’m saying I don’t believe it will be. I actually like the JUCOs coming in and the potential to have a better defensive team. Keep in mind, we finished 4-14 in conference this year and had a losing record overall. I like our chances of doing at least as well. Frankly, even if our record next year matches our record from this past year, I’d have to imagine that there’s going to be a lot more noise to oust Stallings. If he actually manages to compile a worse record (than 4-14), I have no idea how we can possibly make a case for keeping him.

Comment by 1618mt 04.11.17 @ 3:59 pm

I don’t see how this team improves upon the record. And I agree, unless elite recruits come here, this program is a bottom feeder. It plays in the toughest conference and has a difficult ooc schedule.

Comment by TX Panther 04.11.17 @ 5:46 pm

TX – yep. You need at least top 100 recruits like Dixon got to be competitive. To take the next step, top 50 recruits. No one on Pitt’s roster falls into either bucket next season, including the JUCOS. It’s a multi-year rebuilding project that heavily relies on the 2018 recruiting class. That’s reality. The ACC will eat a team with middling talent alive.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 04.11.17 @ 6:19 pm

TT – I guess that’s where I differ, I don’t think the recruits that Dixon left us, with the exception of Young, were top 100 recruits. And more importantly, he recruited a whole bunch of guys that basically played the same position, and none of which had much toughness (to be nice). Yeah, some guys were a lot better than their erroneous rankings, like Cam and Artis, and some were a lot worse, like Wilson and Kithcart, but the recruiting classes weren’t strong for years now. I’m no fan of KS, but I think he will bring in better players and this will offset his suspect coaching. We will see next year, I know its too soon, but I’m betting on at least another 4 ACC wins. I guess time will tell, eh?

Comment by 1618mt 04.11.17 @ 6:41 pm

1618MT – we’ll see but Dixon’s teams failing in the tourney is because he had too many 75-100 players. They could compete in the regular season but struggled in one and done situations when elite athletes shine.

The elite 8 year, Sam Young and Dejuan Blair were both in the 50’s. It’s no wonder it was Pitt’s best team.

I like the recruiting class Stallings has coming in but it’s a foundation class. That class alone will never win anything. They need top 100 players to compete in the regular season or preferably top 50 talent to be competitive in the tourney.

I really don’t ever see Stallings recruiting better than Dixon.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 04.11.17 @ 8:28 pm

TT, I didn’t realize Blair was top 50 recruit… Obviously he developed into great college player.

Comment by Lastrowofsection4 04.12.17 @ 3:33 am

Lastrow – Blair was #59. Sam Young was #71. I was thinking 51 but it still shows my point. You need top 50 players for the Final 4. They don’t have to be all Americans or one and dones either. 25-50 kids that will stay most likely 3 years.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 04.12.17 @ 6:45 am

It didn’t hurt to have LeVance Fields either who was money when the game was on the line

– winning shot vs Duke at MSH
– 3 pointer when shot clock was running down and subsequent steal in last minute vs Xavier in Sweet 16 .. and
– he made both free throws to tie the game with 5 seconds left before Scottie Reynolds broke our hearts

Comment by wbb 04.12.17 @ 7:18 am

TT – Yeah, going back several years, Dixon had better classes, but that was with a different group of assistants, which is the key. Dixon is a very good coach, if he brings in the right assistants to recruit he can be successful. I don’t think he’ll ever win big because he’s too tight, but I think he can have a lot of success.

Comment by 1618mt 04.12.17 @ 7:20 am

1618MT – the assistant exodus happened when SP came back. Jeff Long leaving hurt both football and basketball. Dixon got the big pay raise but did not get the assistant budget and it hurt him. I would have really like to see what Dixon did with this current class had he stayed and had a real recruiting budget and assistant pool. I feel like the staff would have been blown up. The positionless team he was putting together is a very interesting concept. If he had better athletes it may have worked. Every player taller than 6’6″ who can play every position is a cool concept. The execution of his plan didn’t pan out. I’m curious if he keeps that approach with TCU. Length and size to counter a lack of pure athleticism. Of if it will have the same results. Strong regular seasons and disappointing NCAA’s because of the athleticism deficit.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 04.12.17 @ 8:25 am

wbb – Two top 50 players and the rest top 100 players is the formula to winning. Levance was the #88 prospect. Biggs was a top 100 player as well, #78. Jermain Dixon was the only non-top 100 prospect in that starting lineup.

There are reasons that team was so good. Biggs, after he left Pitt, became a really good pro. Almost made a few NBA teams.
