ACCNetwork Extra/WatchESPN or Regional Sports Networks (ROOT, NESN, YES, Sportstime Ohio, etc.)

This is sort of what it must have felt like for fans of other Big East teams when Pitt was at its defensive apex in the early 2000s. A team that grinds everything to a stop. That forces opposing teams to play a different way.  Low scoring affairs that piss you off because it seems the defense got away with muggings while the announcers just heaped praise upon the fundamentally sound defense. A brutally efficient team that sucks the life out of the game.

“They try to grind you into their game,” Pitt coach Kevin Stallings said. “A lot of times, when you play them — and I say this because we’ve scrimmaged them, we’ve played them when he was at Washington State — if they get you in their grinder, you’ve got problems. You have to work to keep playing your game the way you play it and not succumb to the style they want.”

I’m not feeling terribly optimistic about this one.

But we will see if they can stretch the defense and find some gaps. Or at least get some offensive rebounds and easy buckets in transition.

“They don’t have any defensive lapses, really ever,” Johnson said. “They really control the tempo of the game. They really like to enforce their style of play and make you uncomfortable.”

Johnson said video study scheduled for later in the day Tuesday would help.

“We’ll find things we think we can exploit,” he said.

Pitt’s edge might be its free-flowing offensive style and shot-making ability that have been the most apparent traits of Stallings’ team in his first season.

The defense of Virginia is a given. It’s the offense that will break the spirit. They are slow and maddeningly efficient. They shoot over 50% inside the arc, in no small part to very good ball movement. Conversely, Pitt is very bad at interior defense — as you may have noticed against Notre Dame, where the Irish were 22-42 on 2-point shots.

It will be one thing for Pitt to find ways to score against Virginia’s offense. The question in every game for Pitt is whether the defense can do enough. (Just like the football team.)

why PoD….do you need a job.

Jack – At least we don’t have to worry about anyone wanting him except Belks or Hess’s or JC Pennies.

And by the way… who said Stallings starting Artis at Point was just an experiment before Pitt started playing its ACC schedule?

Comment by PittofDreams 01.04.17 @ 11:21 pm

HbgFrank…the same thing applies to all defense like Dixon had. Remember when he lost to I think it was Wisconsin 45-35? Man that was fun to watch…

In 2015 Dixon played these guys we lost 61-49. Then he went on to lose in the NIT to GW 60-54.

Tonight we made Virginia play our game. Think about that….

haha upitt. nice find

Comment by EMel 01.04.17 @ 11:21 pm

Upittbaseball, are you a true Pitt fan?

Comment by PTG 01.04.17 @ 11:21 pm

No Emel… you need a LIFE!

Comment by PittofDreams 01.04.17 @ 11:21 pm

LOL UPitt….it’s old movie night at the Blather….

Comment by Jackagain 01.04.17 @ 11:22 pm

Jackagain, I don’t get your 11:11 comment. This team is lighting up the scoreboard on offense. Unfortunately they are doing the same thing on defense. Did you mean to say when Stallings gets his guys that will play defense to go with this offense, the fans will come?

Comment by HbgFrank 01.04.17 @ 11:22 pm

Emel… you’re about as good as judging College Basketball Coaches as you are at College Quarterbacks.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.04.17 @ 11:23 pm

With the #1 and #3 scorers in the ACC, both over 20 points a game and 4 seniors, we should finish in the Top half of the ACC. Bench or no bench.

Syracuse never had much of a bench when they made deep runs in the Tourney, other teams too.

Comment by EMel 01.04.17 @ 11:23 pm

And why stop there… let’s throw in College Football Coaches.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.04.17 @ 11:23 pm

well well well PoD….you are in a pissy mood tonite.

did someone not use fabric softner for your panties.

Comment by EMel 01.04.17 @ 11:25 pm

No HbgFrank, I mean when he gets his 4* players to fit his system. He’s using guys used to a different system and adjusting, just like Narduzzi.

Not to say this team isn’t exciting. Next year may be a bump in the road though. We need to make the Tournament.

Comment by Jackagain 01.04.17 @ 11:26 pm

Emel… you picked it.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.04.17 @ 11:26 pm

PoD…..weren’t you the one proclaiming Adam Bertke to be the next Big ben.

Talk about not being able to judge college QB’s.

Just stfu

Comment by EMel 01.04.17 @ 11:26 pm

PTG – Sometimes I wish I wasn’t. Sorry I want more than Kevin Stallings. Look at his career stats. New AD fires his ass by 2019.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.04.17 @ 11:27 pm

At this point I would FAR rather have Stallings than Jamie.

Not complicated.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.04.17 @ 11:28 pm

Berkte who played Single A in a town of 234 people.

You guys praising Oreck Otis do realize he has jamie’s top 2 scorers leading the ACC. Dick Groat could beat a weak UVA team with those two.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.04.17 @ 11:30 pm

POD – I don’t want either. But at least one actually won some games in a tough conf.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.04.17 @ 11:32 pm

Agreed, wasn’t happy about the hire either, and I’m not noise as is any else here. However, this guy has said and done everything right. As a coach he’s used his players correctly, great press, motion offense and multiple types of defenses. Something we’ve never seen from JD and I guarantee you JD doesn’t win this game. Had a fluke loss to Duquesne and should’ve won against ND, give him a chance. I like what he’s doing. H2P!

Comment by PTG 01.04.17 @ 11:33 pm

Emel… actually not true about your memory of my support for starting Bertke.

That’s your typical move… go WAY over the top in an effort to discredit any opposing argument no matter how accurate.

I simply said deserved a chance versus Voytik… your ALL-TIME Favorite Pitt QB… next to Cavanaugh and Marino.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.04.17 @ 11:34 pm

yea yea yea PoD…want me to go back and find your comments about how great Berke was going to be.

Btw Voyitk remains the last Pitt QB to actually win a Bowl Game. So suck on that.

Comment by EMel 01.04.17 @ 11:36 pm

Bottom Line… Chryst was such a GOOD Coach he actually won a Bowl Game with Voytik… a Quarterback who couldn’t win at Arkansas State.

TRUTH

Comment by PittofDreams 01.04.17 @ 11:36 pm

Quit arguing or I’m going to make you wear a Potato Paul Gray Sweatshirt with Mustard Stain or make you listen to Dick Groat and Hillgrove for 45 mins till you run for
western pysch and get a room with Darkie. How Pitt employs those guys?????? Hillgrove shouldnt do a high school game.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.04.17 @ 11:45 pm

Upitt, you’re killing me, I really don’t think you’re a true Pitt fan. I think you’re a hidden pedo or hoopie! Hillgrove and Groat are Pitt institutions, and Stallings is doing a great job. A great win tonight and all you’re doing is bitching, go back to hoppie or pedo land!!!

Comment by PTG 01.04.17 @ 11:48 pm

Dixon averaged 48 pts in his games against Virginia. Was fun to watch this team carve up one of the best D’s in the country. Shot over 50%, teams rarely have this kind of success against Bennett.

It’s a shame the shit roster Dixon left him after this year. Especially with a new AD coming in. May never get a fair shake.

Notre Dame loss even more frustrating now!!

Comment by Pap76 01.04.17 @ 11:48 pm

Upitt you make a convincing argument.

Let’s make nice.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.04.17 @ 11:50 pm

Tx Panther

I guess your welcome, and we’ll take the win!!!

I come home from a great game and there is like a three stooges routine going on on blather. UPitt angry about everything and nothing and Emel and PoD fighting about ancient history. Did you guys watch the game? It was pretty entertaining an we finally beat a team we haven’t beat yet.

Lots of ups and downs but something to celebrate for a change.

Young was his old self underneath, we actually made offensive rebounding a priority. Guys hit big shots when they counted. The Zoo was awesome and took Guy totally out of his game.

Yeah a little too loose with the ball at times, and free throws almost cost us the game, again.

But what a block by Luther, can’t wait to see it on replay. Jeter and Johnson really came through with scoring and rebounding.

Gallagher was really into it and happy. A real confidence builder.

Just like the football team this team must win with offense because the defense completely disappears at times, but they made some nice stops in overtime along with the superb 3 3’s in a row.

Definitely a new era.

Comment by gc 01.05.17 @ 12:02 am

Nice to see Charles Smith and DeJuan Blair, they both looked pretty good. I swear I saw Carl Krauser or a guy that looked just like him.

Comment by gc 01.05.17 @ 12:07 am

GC, agreed we should all be celebrating a new era of Pitt, in hoops and football. I usually only follow the board and don’t post much but Upitt has gotten under my skin very much. Never attack Hillgrove and if you’re a true Pitt fan, you must give Stallings a chance. The way I see it, Stallings has done everything right to this point and has truly changed my opinion. This board should be pro Pitt athletics, if I want to read negative stuff then I can get a subscription to the post gazette.

Comment by PTG 01.05.17 @ 12:13 am

Upitt, signing off for the night, but make no mistake, never and I mean never ever again attack Hillgrove and Groat!

Comment by PTG 01.05.17 @ 12:38 am

PTG – You crack me up. Dallas Mike and I and buddies back home laugh our asses off about how bad he is doing a game. If you love Hillgrove congrats. Not a Hoopie or Pedo Fan sorry to dissapoint. Goodnight.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.05.17 @ 12:46 am

Great Pitt WIN

Stallings showed his metal tonight – the players responded to a tough loss on Sat…the coach out schemed a top 10 team … naysayers be damned for one night at least.

H2P

Comment by Tommymac 01.05.17 @ 2:31 am

Nice to have a win over a good team. Loosing to ND is a bit less painful.

Love Cam Johnson and Luther.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 01.05.17 @ 3:55 am

Didn’t expect to find it after last night’s victory and shooting display, but there it was from Pap 76.

Dixon left Stallings a shit roster but those those same players shot over 54% from the field and 62% from three and Pitt beat the currently #11 ranked team. They also crushed UVA on the glass. Not bad for such a poor roster. However that dominance does make me ponder how it even went to OT.

Pap, most of the games you cite were closely contested and against more defensively competent UVA teams (lazy closeouts and poor help) than Pitt played last night. It’s not like Pitt got their ass kicked in past years. I believe last year was the only game I felt Pitt wasn’t really in.

That Luther block was something. The game saver was Artis 3 to knot it after UVA took the 3 pt. lead near the 6 minute mark of the 2nd half. Had that not gone it seemed as if things might unravel.

I will say that Stallings is much looser with regard to letting them play than Dixon was. Not sure whether that is good or bad but it worked last night.

Comment by Barvo 01.05.17 @ 7:40 am

Just catching up on last nights posts before I begin my daily grind …one comment .. some of you guys stayed way up past your bedtime and got very cranky …remember” 10 hours of sleep on every game night keep Panther Blatherites healthy and bright.”

Comment by BigB 01.05.17 @ 8:17 am

@ Upittbaseball, I see that you’re up to your old tricks of winning new friends with your positive views on all things Pitt again. & the funniest thing is this guy PTG actually thinks that he can turn you away from the Darkside by debating with you. That right there is pretty much the definition of “futility”. LOL
