Recruiting Drought Ends With Two

Hey, maybe Pitt should lose an OC more often.

/remembers that this will be OC #4 in 4 years

Oh, yeah. Pitt already has that down pat.

Despite the departure of the offensive coordinator, Pitt picked up two recruits on the offensive side of the ball. It’s been a while since there has been a Pat Signal.

The first came in the morning in offensive lineman Jerry Drake from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. While “only” a 3-star recruit (ESPN, though has him as a 4-star), his offer sheet included Alabama, Auburn, UCLA, Tennessee and LSU. He plans on being an early enrollee. Not necessarily because of football, though.

“After seeing the academics and being around the players, I knew I couldn’t pass it up,” Drake told Panther-Lair.com. “It took a few days to be sure but I had a good idea of where I was going to go after the visit. It was really the academics and the football program, because they had a need for me.”

Pitt’s need for offensive linemen was important to Drake and a selling point from the coaching staff, but the University’s engineering program had just as much of an impact on his decision.

“Being an academic kid, I looked for the engineering program and after getting a tour of the academics, I could tell it was something I couldn’t pass up,” he said. “That was a big part of the visit for me. We toured the whole engineering building and saw every level.

“They have a lot of stuff and a lot of different groups. Like, one group is working on robots, one group is building cars. Some of the students built a robot that folds clothes. That was pretty cool. I like building stuff and I like fixing stuff, and I really liked what they have to offer.”

At 6’7″ and 300 pounds, he should stand out in the Engineering Department.

The other may not show up in the recruiting rankings, but is a big get.

Max Browne is headed to the ACC.

Browne, who began the season as USC’s starting quarterback, announced Thursday he will transfer to Pittsburgh in January. Browne already earned his degree from USC, so he will be eligible to suit up immediately for the Panthers in 2017.

Browne made the decision to commit to Pitt after visiting campus over the weekend.

Browne started the first three games of the season for USC, but was benched after a 1-2 start in favor of redshirt freshman Sam Darnold. USC lost in Darnold’s first career start, but have since reeled off eight straight wins and will face Penn State in the Rose Bowl.

In his three starts, Browne threw for 474 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 63.2 percent of his passes. Browne spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons as USC’s No. 2 QB behind Cody Kessler, a 2016 third round NFL Draft pick of the Cleveland Browns.

Browne is by no means a lock to win the job. He will once more have to battle a redshirt freshman. This time in Thomas MacVittie. But Pitt definitely needed a little more depth at the spot.

Both visited Pitt this past weekend and have made the commitment.

Hmmm……….. who would have thought that Pitt could become Quarterback U for transfer QB’s that want to show their skills for NFL scouts……. !?!?
First Savage……… not with Peterman probably getting an NFL checkup…….

Comment by Mtoolmn 12.15.16 @ 5:28 pm

Opps……. “now” …….

Comment by Mtoolmn 12.15.16 @ 5:30 pm

What a big win for this coaching staff!! (And for positive PR – SOP is still dead!)

The PAT signal comes through!

Congrats to both players – if Browne has NFL aspirations he has to have seen what Pitt did for Ton Savage and probalby Nate Peterman.

And a degree from Pitt’s prestigious Engineering school will allow Mr. Drake to write his own ticket in life regardless of whether the NFL is in his future – I love to get brainy recruits with their priorities in order.

Comment by Tommymac 12.15.16 @ 5:31 pm

i guess that means no malik zaiere or however you spell it..

Comment by goalie44 12.15.16 @ 5:43 pm

I hope mcvittie wins the job. I’m not a big fan of the one year transfer.

Comment by Kvah 12.15.16 @ 6:14 pm

We need a level playing field. Gallegher needs to get a salary cap on NCAA coaches salaries.

Comment by alcofan 12.15.16 @ 6:18 pm

@alcofan Will never ever happen. NCAA as a whole is too damn corrupt. Just look at Mark Emmert’s glee over Pedo U being back on top…sickening.

Comment by Tommymac 12.15.16 @ 6:29 pm

I’m hoping Browne is good, I’d rather have a seasoned vet with game experience than a freshman going into unhappy valley. Week two,

But hey, let the best man win

Nice to see some positive news out of the pitt camp this week!!

Comment by Keith 12.15.16 @ 7:20 pm

Heard from a PITT grad who has lived in So Cal for a long time that Max Brown.is a our pocketbook passer with no legs….not a runner like NP…a QB with pocket presence a set of wheels really tests the D

Comment by BigB 12.15.16 @ 7:24 pm

Above… pure pocket passer

Comment by BigB 12.15.16 @ 7:26 pm

Good to hear, Thanks Big B.

Comment by rkb 12.15.16 @ 8:04 pm

Agree,good news was needed

Comment by Kvah 12.15.16 @ 8:58 pm

Recruiting is the life blood of any good program. Very good news indeed. Both sound like they want to be here and the Pitt coaches really wanted them. About pocket passers, two words Dan Marino. I’ll take a guy who can make all the throws any day over a runner who can sometimes connect. Good news. I hope to see some more Pat signals in the coming weeks.

Comment by Justinian 12.15.16 @ 9:20 pm

So we have ourselves a Seattle quarterback. Do you think Barnes helped with that one?

Except for the weather Pittsburgh is an attractive town. Seattle has a lot to offer as does the whole West coast. But our part of the Country is not chopped liver either

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 12.15.16 @ 10:51 pm

Remember Browne and USC’s opponents in the 3 games he started included #1 Alabama and at the time #7 Stanford and that game was at Stanford. Alabama was at a neutral site.

The middle game was at home against Utah State (where Herman came from) and USC won 45-7

Browne was 23 of 30 (77%) for a buck 87, 2 TD’s and a pick. 143 QB rating for the game.

So Browne’s 3 starts included 2 of the toughest opponents on USC’s schedule, Bama and Stanford.

I expect a kid who was #1 at USC to win the starting gig at Pitt. And if he doesn’t that would mean McVittie is very good. A win win. 🙂

Comment by Emel 12.15.16 @ 11:31 pm

Interesting to note in 2014, Nathan Peterman started against Alabama as well.

So maybe we get a repeat of Savage, Peterman and now Browne.

Comment by Emel 12.15.16 @ 11:35 pm

Big B what are u saying? i guess u are saying that Max Browne cant run But u mumble your words like a retard I doubt you have a University of Pittsburgh degree

Comment by Boo Boo #1 12.16.16 @ 12:23 am

Boo getting personal…not becoming of a Pitt alumnus.

Comment by panther94 12.16.16 @ 2:22 am

Does anyone Know if they have a new resturant in the Steel building I know they closed the Top of the Town or what ever it was called I went up there in the 1990’s on St Pats Day and wow it was awsome and all the leaves were till gray But the Pirates didnt start till April I hated going up that elevator and that was way before 911. I just didnt like going up in skyscrapers Did they put a new resturant in there? I just might go H2P We just got Max Browne and and a good blocker Its not all bad Pitt fans

Comment by Boo Boo #1 12.16.16 @ 2:49 am

Boo Boo, that was the Top of the Triangle in the USS Building. Mt. Washington’s Altius is good as is the Grand Concourse at Station Square with the River Room if you want a view of the city. There are a lot of new restaurants in the city and we now considered a foodie city.

Comment by Justinian 12.16.16 @ 7:37 am

UPMC took the space that was the Top of the Triangle resturant. If you go up there and tell them your a Pitt Alum, Jeffery Romoff will be glad to let you look around.

Comment by alcofan 12.16.16 @ 8:38 am

Actually the good food in the Steel Tower is now in the basement – great sandwich shop and terrific Turkish Cafe.

Comment by Tommymac 12.16.16 @ 10:49 am

Boo-boo… My source in California told me QB Brown is a pocket passer and not a runner ..kinda like Dan Marino wasn’t a threat with his legs…Nate Peterman could run and that ability was both in the game plan as well as his ability to improvise during the game..hope the helps clarify..regarding my retardedness – could be due to being tired from starting my work day at 5am, shots to the head in the 60’s in my leather helmet, drinking whiskey early or growing up near Babcock n Wilcox and lastly who from Pittsburgh needs a big vocabulary..

Comment by BigB 12.16.16 @ 5:29 pm

Exactly BigB. Use tiny words words but carry a big stick. Actions always speak louder than fancy words.

Comment by TX Panther 12.16.16 @ 5:44 pm

Steve Srakisia hired by Bama as new OC… damn I was hopin to have a drink with him in the Burgh

Comment by BigB 12.16.16 @ 6:11 pm

Sarkisian

Comment by BigB 12.16.16 @ 6:15 pm

I bet I could out drink him.

Comment by TX Panther 12.16.16 @ 6:41 pm

Like the OL get. We will just have to wait and see with Browne. Nate Peterman had 15 rushes for 7 yards before coming to Pitt, so I’m not overly concerned about Browne being a pocket guy. Peterman is a pocket guy who was opportunistic when the throws were not there. I’m pretty confident Browne (or anyone else) can average 3 yards a carry like Peterman did if needed.

With what we’ve seen from Narduzzi, I don’t think there’s much doubt that Browne is going to be the starter. Not saying he’ll remain the starter, but a former 5* guy does’t visit one school only without a guarantee of sorts that it is his job to lose. Just hope MacVittie stays the course.

Any solid, experienced senior DB’s taller than 5’10” out there looking to continue playing? HAS to be, no?

Comment by cnorwoodaz 12.16.16 @ 6:46 pm

Cn…might be a tough sell…DBs don’t tend to shine in this defense…there just aren’t that many Revis’s out there

Comment by HbgFrank 12.16.16 @ 7:07 pm

Boo Boo – You have the class of a degenerate. Say another shitty comment to Big B and I will kick your Heidelberg living ass. Have some class you dick.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.16.16 @ 7:13 pm

Big B, Funny stuff! I actually had two leather helmets that we we would play with as little kids. No we didn’t wear them in high school. By the way, “yinz” comes from the old English phrase “You ones” so we Pittsburghers are actually linguistic scholars.

Comment by Justinian 12.16.16 @ 7:26 pm

Wbb…. where has wbb gone ?

Comment by BigB 12.16.16 @ 7:26 pm

Justinian… we actually had leather helmets at Apollo High School which were phased out by 1969 when the Riddell plastic helmet with web suspension was introduced.. our leather hats did include a facemask…

Comment by BigB 12.16.16 @ 7:30 pm

Haven’t seen him on PittPOV either.

Comment by panther94 12.16.16 @ 7:32 pm

The leather helmets that I had didn’t have face masks either. In high school we had clunky Wilson spikes and plastic helmets with heavy padding inside. We didn’t have the suspension helmets. The facemasks had the dual bar. If the linemen wanted a face cage they had to buy it and put it on themselves. The time period was 1968 to 1971.

Comment by Justinian 12.16.16 @ 7:58 pm

Did somebody ask for a defensive end? Pat Sibnal for Mr. Alexander.

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 12.16.16 @ 8:11 pm

Yes – very good get. Flipped him from NC State.

I wish I was this excited about basketball.

Comment by TX Panther 12.16.16 @ 8:23 pm

Where the hell is Wbb?

Comment by TX Panther 12.16.16 @ 8:24 pm

Played at Baldwin (rode bench a lot) 66-67. We had the best plastic helmets and uniforms/pads of the day. But…we played teams that still ran the single wing. Char Valley for one!
Played Mt Lebo in ( both 9-1) 67 for all the marbles in front of 10,000 + at Lebo. Got blown out. Largest amount of $$ gambled on a HS game in history according to police.

4 players out of that game became pros!

Comment by Dan 72 12.16.16 @ 8:47 pm

With our All-American pass rusher Mr. Price moving on, Deslin Alexandre’s timing couldn’t be more welcome. Hail to Pitt Deslin!

Comment by Justinian 12.16.16 @ 8:52 pm

Heard Canada will coach Pitt’s bowl game before leaving. Glad we do not have to worry about interim OC Salem again this year. The recruiting news is comforting . May it continue to please and Duz comes up with another top OC. Pitt will have to go full out against NW as they improved greatly as their season wore on. H2p

Comment by Pitt60 12.16.16 @ 9:08 pm

Chas, You will need to update the heading with the Dought Ends with 3.

Comment by Justinian 12.16.16 @ 9:37 pm

Dan 72, Westinghouse ran the single wing when I was in high school. What’s interesting today is seeing the old stuff being used in recent years with Wildcat offences. The old wishbone option principals are being effectively used by the service academies and at Georgia Tech.

Comment by Justinian 12.16.16 @ 9:43 pm

Mooseface couldn’t recruit a QB. Nard was left with virtually nothing in the cupboard.
By the way…..wasn’t Mooseface’s post Big Ten championship interview priceless. Deer, meet headlights.

Chas… send wbb and email and see what’s up .. he was one of the most frequent posters along with gc

Back to hoopsville tonight vs Rice. Rice freshmen Robert Martin is the son of former Pitt great Bobby Martin. 1987-1991. Pretty good team,Miller,Matthews Brookin, Shorter and Martin.

Comment by alcofan 12.17.16 @ 7:54 am

Scratch Brookin, put in Darelle Porter.

Comment by alcofan 12.17.16 @ 7:59 am

A nice bit by Chris Peak of Pantherlair on new defensive end commit Deslin Alexandre.

WBB has gone on hiatus before, so hopefully he will be back soon.
