Open Thread: Yale-Pitt

7pm, ACC Network Extra/WatchESPN.

Mike Young picked up his second consecutive ACC Player of the Week honors.

The cynical part of me is going to watch with an eye towards whether Pitt can put forth a decent and consistent defensive effort this game, or do they revert to type.

As much as Coach Kevin Stallings emphasized up-tempo and offense in the offseason, once the season started he’s like most coaches: time to play some dang defense.

Noting how Pitt (3-1) fought back from a 15-point deficit in the second half against Marquette, Stallings on Monday said he was “really impressed” with “not only having the wherewithal to come back and get back in the game, but finish the job.

“As I told them afterwards, lots of teams can come back but not everybody comes back and wins. And we were able to come back and win.”

On the other hand, “Our defense really concerned me a lot,” Stallings said, referencing most of the SMU game and the first half against Marquette. “Defensively it just feels like we have a lot of work to do.”

That’s putting it mildly.

The other thing missing from this team is a consistent 3d scoring option behind Young and Jamel Artis.

“I don’t think it’s a case of us becoming too reliant on them as much as we have to make sure everybody is doing their part, regardless of who has the ball,” Stallings said. “If Mike has the ball or Jamel has the ball, the other four guys have to be doing in the offense what they’re supposed to be doing at the time those guys have the ball. That does not include standing and watching. We’re not going to stand around and watch one guy play offense. That’s not who we are or what we do.”

There is, of course, a downside. Though reliant, to Stallings, is too strong of a word, Pitt has seen a extraordinarily high number of its points come from just two players. Young and Artis have accounted for 52.1 percent of the team’s points, second only to Georgia among the aforementioned group of Power Five and Big East teams.

In the past two games alone, Young scored 52 points, a run of excellence that earned him ACC player of the year honors for the second consecutive week. During that same stretch, 11 teammates (not including Artis) scored 52 points combined.

All the points the Panthers get from their top two players can come with unintended side effects, like an overall lack of balance and depth, as well as, yes, occasionally relying perhaps too much upon just two of five players on the court. The loss Thursday against SMU was an example of that worst-case scenario, with Stallings decrying much of his team for standing around and waiting for Young or Artis to make a play.

“We’re going to carry a lot of the load, but we can’t win it ourselves,” Young said. “We need every single one of those guys, whether it’s Ryan Luther tonight, Sheldon [Jeter] the next game or Cam Johnson tonight or Chris [Jones] tomorrow, whoever — [Justice] Kithcart, [Damon] Wilson — we need everybody. We’re going to carry a lot of the load, but we need those guys to be just as big and just as important for this team as we are if we’re going to be who we want to be.”

Through four games, none of the other players have played even decent back-to-back games on offense. It isn’t about one player being hot to help. It’s that all but one players seems to play decently. Cam Johnson has had one good game. Chris Jones is hit-or-miss every game. Same with Sheldon Jeter. No consistency. Nothing else on which to rely.

Pitt an 8 pt favorite.

Ties to both schools. Want to see a close game but a Pitt win.

Boola boola but H2P!!!

Jones with the airball…..lol

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 7:36 pm

why is he logging so many minutes..Pitt had a chance to get some momentum there and he throws up an airball

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 7:37 pm

Bench has zero points and limited minutes I’m guessing since I just remembered we had a game a 10 minutes ago

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 7:40 pm

wow and we give up a 3 point play with 2 secs to go..to some kid i could prolly still guard 🙂

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 7:40 pm

A Big East regular season halftime score that Jamie Dixon would be proud of.

Can Mike Young pull off another career game for the win?

Comment by Barvo 11.22.16 @ 7:49 pm

Yalies haven’t scored in 6 minutes Pitt should have a much bigger lead….and gawd do i hate that acc commercial…can they make another one plz lol

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 8:16 pm

Bring in the Human Aircraft Carrier to guard their big guy…lets see nix play with the A team

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 8:25 pm

Chris Jones is just awful, says a lot about our lack of depth, next year is gonna be really really bad

Comment by Keith 11.22.16 @ 8:36 pm

5 points off the bench, we’re going to be BC next year.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 8:36 pm

6 point lead with under 2 minutes to play. Not very impressive when you see Virginia blew Yale out and held them to 38 points.

Yawn…

Comment by Erie Express 11.22.16 @ 8:37 pm

we got to get Kevin “The Animal” Stallings a turnbuckle to naw on…on the bench.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 8:41 pm

3 point lead with 47 seconds left – nail biter all the way against Yale. Bring on the ACC – this team is ready to roll (over).

Comment by Erie Express 11.22.16 @ 8:44 pm

Looks like we have several ‘barbie doll’ type cheerleaders….so a bumper crop. 🙂

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 8:45 pm

The Animal finally got up off the bench…lol

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 8:48 pm

they should have coined this game…

the Battle of the Baldy’s

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 8:49 pm

I see a loss to Maryland on the horizon.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 8:50 pm

I’ll take the win. Pitt gets to 20 and they get an invite. Keep em coming.

Comment by TX Panther 11.22.16 @ 8:56 pm

Number 1 goal should be for Stallings to develop some sort of a bench during the rent-a-win portion part of schedule.

Not talking about so much tonite since we were looking just to win. But after Maryland game.

We know Artis & Young & Jeter can score. We know Johnson is a streaky shooter.

Got to get some more production off the bench or we’re going to be toast as the conference season progresses and Young, Artis & Jeter get nicked up and banged up.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 9:00 pm

Damon Wilson, did he even play, I see him listed in the boxscore, like he played a minute or so.

5-10 points off the bench isn’t going to cut it.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 9:03 pm

Virginia beat Yale 62-38. In Yale’s last game.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 9:07 pm

Boy are we going to struggle against teams that have a post presence. And I don’t want to even think about next year. But a win is a win. Let’s keep piling them up!!! H2P!!!

Comment by MissingWlat 11.22.16 @ 9:16 pm

I’m looking at Virginia’s Roster, it’s not much bigger than ours. So this talk about having no height, on the BS meter….it’s a 9

Devon Hall G 6-5 207 JR Virginia Beach, VA
1 Austin Nichols F 6-9 234 JR Collierville, TN
2 Justice Bartley G 6-5 212 SO Lilburn, GA
4 Marial Shayok G 6-5 196 JR Ottawa, ON
5 Kyle Guy G 6-3 165 FR Indianapolis, IN
10 Trevon Gross Jr. G 6-3 206 SO Jackson, NJ
11 Ty Jerome G 6-5 192 FR New Rochelle, NY
12 De’Andre Hunter G 6-7 212 FR Philadelphia, PA

24 Jeff Jones F 6-6 213 SR Charlottesville, VA
25 Mamadi Diakite F 6-9 214 FR Conakry, Guinea

They start 3 Guards, 1 Forward (wilkins who is 6’8″) and a Center (jack salt) who is 6″11″ aussie but the guy is a stiff, avg’s less than 6 points and 4 rebounds per game.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 9:24 pm

Pitt is starting a backcourt of 6’7″ Jamel Artis and 6’8″ Cameron Johnson.

that has to be one of the biggest backcourts in the Nation.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 9:25 pm

Pitt has a bigger frontline this year, than the sophomore year of DeJuan Blair.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 9:28 pm

Careful throwing around that “stiff” word about any other team Emel.
This team is not fun to watch.
Can you imagine watching JD coaching THIS team. That might be the only thing worse….tight stiffs. And next year, season ticket sales will plummet unless something happens on the recruiting front.
Didn’t watch the whole game, but where is Jeter?

Comment by TVax1 11.22.16 @ 9:28 pm

So i call bullshit that we’re small.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 9:29 pm

Now what they don’t do, is work hard on the boards like that DeJuan Blair team.

So it’s more a lack of effort imo than anything else.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 9:30 pm

Young aside, serious lack of talent, which will only worsen next year.
Picked to finish twelfth in the conference…that seems about right.
A lot worse next year.
Jamie picked the right time to pull up his stakes and pack his tent.

Comment by Gasman 11.22.16 @ 9:32 pm

And “Rooster” Jones leads the team tonight – wait for it – in minutes played with 37.

The pieces to the puzzle are not fitting together well, yet.

Comment by Erie Express 11.22.16 @ 9:38 pm

Is Stallings coaching this team or are they just running around shooting when they feel like it? The intensity is a joke. They rebound once in while, play defense now and again.

Stallings is gone in 3 years. Write it down

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 11.22.16 @ 9:53 pm

Pitt is definitely not small. Just no true center. For all the height, they don’t really have a lot of length. UVA has more length than Pitt and a more cohesive lineup … and more top 50 player’s in their respective classes and the athleticism to go with that ranking.

For some reason, despite the time together, this group of players has never developed any chemistry. It’s quite baffling actually.

Dixon finally recruited a group that stuck together for 4 years like the early years and they can’t play together. The blueprint was there but construction, shoddy. Not sure if it was the builder’s fault or cheap parts but it never looked like the model that was promised.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.22.16 @ 10:02 pm

TT….i didn’t see too many Top 50 players when I looking over their roster.

They have like two 4 star kids, one is freshman guard.

Most of their other players are only 3 star rated kids.

They have nothing on the order of Duke or UNC.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 10:07 pm

TCU, lead by Jamie Dixon is down 43-40 in the 2nd half to Illinois St. Now showing on ROOT Sports TV.

Comment by Erie Express 11.22.16 @ 10:08 pm

What Tony Bennett has them doing, is playing hard for all 40 minutes a game.

Which was a Pitt trademark until about 2011 or so.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 10:09 pm

Not that concerned with the rebounding. Yale only had 4 offensive rebounds (out of 65 shots). I’m ok with that. Dejuan Blair rarely had one foot out of the paint. Young and Jeter rarely have one foot in the paint. It’s hard to rebound 15 feet from the basket. It’s just a different style. Can they hustle more? Sure. Can our starters hustle more and continue to play 30 plus minutes a game? Eh.

I’m more concerned about our perimeter defense when we start facing better guards and everyone other than Young and Artis going 10 for 28. Take out Cam and the remaining five players were 6 for 21. Jeter, Jones, Luther and Kithcart played a combined 125 minutes and scored 13 points. We should have won 80-60 tonight, but got nothing from six of our nine. We need 20 plus from those guys, maybe 30 in league play.

Comment by cnorwoodaz 11.22.16 @ 10:24 pm

Cam Johnson 4-5 from 3, rest of the team 1-10 from 3, good to have a sharpshooter in the lineup. Speaking of sharpshooters Jonny David, son of former Pitt guard Joey David got 2 minutes of walk on action against Duquesne Sun night.

Comment by alcofan 11.22.16 @ 10:55 pm

Agree with all of that norwood.

But rebounding will be a problem with this group.
I can guarantee you that 🙂

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 10:57 pm

Indiana about to go down to Fort Wayne. OK, glad for Pitt’s win each and every one of them.

Comment by TVax1 11.22.16 @ 10:59 pm

No, going OT.

Comment by TVax1 11.22.16 @ 11:03 pm

Agreed – need to learn to box out – was obvious tonight . We were at the game down in the Zoo on the offensive end…was a good entertaining game IMO and we never got the feeling Pitt was going to lose. Coaches and Kids body language was good the whole way.

Made a lot of mistakes but IMO more because of learning the system and the fact Yale was a quality opponent (went to The Dance last year and got farther the Pitt) then lack of concentration and effort like the SMU loss and the win last Monday.

I enjoy watching this team – the offense is starting to click and they made some improvement on D.

I personally like the free flow offense and not having a micro manager coach set a play and call who is going to shoot every single time down the court. The players are relaxed and seem to be having more fun every game.

Happy Turkey Day to all and H2P

…and come out Saturday to Heinz if you can to ‘Honor Conner’ (thanks to the poster here who started that saying – sorry am old and my memory is not what it used to be after a day or 2 lol) and all the seniors who have given their all to Pitt.

Comment by Tommymac 11.22.16 @ 11:08 pm

This Ft Wayne team is one of the best coached ever. Remember the name John Kaufman.

Comment by Dan 72 11.22.16 @ 11:10 pm

Josh Newkirk… not our Josh for Indiana

Comment by Dan 72 11.22.16 @ 11:13 pm

Most incredible upset …..maybe ever. The Mastadons of Ft Wayne beat #3 Indiana in OT after leading most of the game!

Comment by Dan 72 11.22.16 @ 11:21 pm

The Mastodons dethrone the Hoosiers as Indiana’s team.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 11:24 pm

Chaminade a D2 school over #1 Virginia and 7’4″ Ralph Sampson, 3 time college player of the year, was still the biggest ever.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 11:27 pm

Newkirk had 13, 3 & 3 for the Hoosiers.

Pitt could really use him off the bench this year.

Comment by Emel 11.22.16 @ 11:29 pm

@@@@@@@@

Will take the 4-1 record however our D and rebounding is
terrible. Artis is terrific player but he will not be able to guard
ACC quality guards….as he is getting burned by the comp
in non-con games. Lack of second chance shots via O rebounding is lacking.

Dont see a measurable difference in Stallings O v. Jamie’s.
Guys are shooting earlier in the shot clock with no one in position to rebound.

Haven’t seen anything yet that indicates Stallings is superior to JD.

Comment by JR 11.23.16 @ 8:12 am

@Emel Saw that too about Newkirk. Interesting how he shot 43% from the arc his FR year at Pitt and then dropped to 30% his SO year on more shots.

Unfortunately Newkirk still doesn’t look like the successor to JR that we had hoped. 44% FG, 50% FT, 12 assists with 10 turnovers as a 22 year old RS junior. One could argue that JD stunted his development, but I for one am not buying.

@Dan 72 Most incredible upset ever, IMO, remains Villanova-Georgetown in 1985 (NCAA Final). Second is probably NC State-Houston in 1983 (NCAA Final). Third is probably Chaminade-Virginia in 1982. Perhaps before your time?

Comment by Barvo 11.23.16 @ 9:01 am

To me, Jeter is the most mind boggling so far, hands down. He has Gilbert Brown disease. Settles for jump shots over and over instead of attacking the rim. Soooo frustrating to watch somebody with so much athletic ability settle for jump shots. Take it to the rack, young man!!!

Comment by Praise the Lard 11.23.16 @ 9:10 am

Lard +1

Comment by gc 11.23.16 @ 11:38 am

JR – I agree, one of the few glaring differences in our style of play offensively this year is the quicker shot, but there’s no excuse for doing so without someone in rebounding position, as you eluded to. I also agree that this team is weak defensively- the opposing guard drives to the baseline, and 3-4 of our players consistently over-commit, leaving several guys open at the perimiter for the kickout, strikes me as very undisciplined despite a team full of veterans. However, I’m not sure anyone was expecting Stallings would be a coaching upgrade, I think most would agree that it was a coaching downgrade, however the one area we may benefit a little is in the area of recruiting- that remains to be seen, but that’s the hope. Jamie’s Pitt teams have not been strong defensively or rebounding for several years now, not because he can’t coach, but because we stopped recruiting tough, sacrificial types years ago and never recovered. We need our identity back, and it would help if we could at least find a center again.

Comment by 1618mt 11.23.16 @ 12:59 pm

JR at 8:20 AM post – I’m in total agreement. They need to do the token press throughout the game to slow down the opposition. The longer a team has to run their offense, the more chance of a Pitt player losing his man. Stallings just has to show tape of the offense missing early clock shots and freeze frame – they were outnumbered sometimes 4-0 & 3-1 under the bucket for the offensive rebound. This will be a big problem down the road. Artis will never foul out of a game unless it’s by offensive fouls. You can’t foul on defense when you are 5 feet from the man you are guarding. Need some sort of in bounds plays – not much better than last year throwing it into the back court. And for heaven’s sake, can they please get back on defense in a timely manner.

Comment by Virgil 11.23.16 @ 1:03 pm

Will be at Heinz Saturday. BTW 84 Lumber has done a 180 and packed their box with Pitt fans. After I spoke with the Vice President of marketing 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving – a friend of mine who is a YUGE Michigan fan pointed out the three Pittsburgh guys on their roster-

Kugler SR back-up OG behind a true FR
Winovich – JR back-up rush LB behind a SR
Hudson – FR athlete who is redshirting

That’s a fine group of players that Pitt could have used – 2 starters for sure?

Saw this on the news last night –

COLIN KAEPERNICK of the “no stand” for our flag during NFL pregame has never, ever registered to vote in a US election.

Enjoy the BIG meals that await you today my friends.

Comment by Erie Express 11.24.16 @ 7:48 am

BB Top 25 has 1 loss Rhode Island, 2 loss Michigan State and no Pitt. In fact, Pitt has no votes in either poll, placing them outside the top 50.

UConn at 2-4 received votes in the USA Today poll, along with 2-1 Dayton in both polls, 2 loss Yale (who Pitt beat), Rutgers and Cal State Bakersfield.

In FB, Pitt is ranked 33rd in the Coaches Poll behind Minnesota (who lost to pedo state), Washington State (who lost to a D2 school) and South Florida.

Pitt seems to be the Rodney Dangerfield of college sports.

Crush cuse!

Comment by Erie Express 11.24.16 @ 8:25 am

Play the young guys Why? Because Pitt is going to get killed in ACC play. So get them ready for next year H2P Happy Thnksgiving everyone.

Comment by Boo Boo #1 11.24.16 @ 8:42 am

Jeter and Jones are both disappointing because they looked like they could have been the kind of players that could drive to the hoop. Neither have improved in their tenure at Pitt. Also their shooting has always been erratic, they both run hot and cold, mostly cold.

Comment by gc 11.24.16 @ 8:42 am

It is also very odd that we have four guys that have played together forever, but seem to have no chemistry. Patterson and Zanna always seemed to know where the other was and could hit them with the open pass and easy score.

Comment by gc 11.24.16 @ 8:49 am

Erie – Agreed. The polls are hard on Pitt. In basketball they aren’t a top 50 team yet though so I really don’t have a problem with it.

In football, Vegas has Pitt as the 16th best team. Much more accurate. The only 4 loss team in the football polls is LSU so they are consistent in that manner. Pitt would be the next 4 loss team in after LSU.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.24.16 @ 9:29 am

Catching up on my Blather trading this morning – I sure enjoy the diverse comments from you guys ( should prolly be “yunz”, or y’all). Hope everybody has a great Thanksgiving – we’ll all gain pounds like Brian O’Neil on peanut butter sandwiches!!

Bravo and EMel…agree with your upsets. Old enough to remember UVA Chaminade. Got a bit too excited watching such a well coached Ft Wayne team.

While I like Stallings, I think the Ft Wayne coach was exactly the kind of young upcoming coach we all wanted Pitt to hire!

Agreed, this Pitt ream will lose a bunch in ACC play but don’t
think we will lose to Marylandvunless Trimble just dominates at PG.

Be thankful for all you have today fellow Pitt fans!

Comment by Dan 72 11.24.16 @ 9:52 am

On the one hand, I don’t think there is any doubt Pitt is not viewed favorably by any of the “experts” (i.e., pollsters, prognosticators, bowl committees, March madness seeding committees, etc.). On the other hand, Pitt hasn’t achieved anything noteworthy in the sports arena for 40 years so they really haven’t earned the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully, Narduzzi is on track to change that.

Spot on Dan72, that is precisely the kind of coach Pitt needed!

Happy Thanksgiving to all and safe travels. See you at Heinz on Saturday! HTP!
