5-2 As Expected

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 7:41 am

Just past the halfway point in the season. On the bye week, so this fits as far as time to take stock of the season to date.

Pitt could be 7-0. They could have ended up 3-4. Sitting at 5-2 is about what was expected coming into the season. Two losses on the road to teams ranked in the top-25 before the season started. Again, not unexpected coming into the season. Of course, the road to this 5-2 probably doesn’t feel terribly satisfying as 5 of the games came down to the final few minutes or less.

But then, that’s probably true for most things. We chart out a course. Have the expectations. May even meet them, but getting there is never quite as envisioned.

Most of us in our preseason thoughts were realistic in chalking up road losses to Oklahoma State and UNC, but there is no satisfying way to have those losses occur once the season actually got underway. It wouldn’t have been better to be blown out by them. Losing by two scores would hardly improve things.

The upside — and with a little more time from those games to dim the immediacy of the pain, frustration and excessive drinking that resulted — of losing the game in the final minutes. It shows that Pitt isn’t that far off, from being a legit top-25 team. From winning the Coastal (yes, I know, Pitt is still in it for this year, but unless Pitt beats both VT and Miami in the next few weeks the only way Pitt wins the Coastal is because the rest of the division went into total chaos).

Of course, if you are the glass half-empty type. You can see those other three games Pitt didn’t close out until the final minutes or play. Where the outcome could have easily been another loss and Pitt would be starting at a sup-par record and still mired in the mediocrity. Where Pitt drops at least one game inexplicably as they have done so often in the past decade plus. Regardless of the coach.

We have known, though, that Pitt’s overall talent is in the middle-of-the-pack range. Spots that shine. Others that, well, are cringe-inducing. That Pitt has won the games they should and only lost games where they were expected over this season and last is small improvement, but still an improvement. Win two of the next three and it becomes another small improvement.

Pitt still has a little more than a week before the next game and the start of their toughest stretch of games. I have no idea what to expect at this point.

Anyone have info on the Jeter decommit? Why? Pitt is back in it?

Comment by tomcat 10.19.16 @ 8:00 am

Chas, I have had no idea what to expect all year so why should the next three be any different.

I do have to say that the offense is everything I had hoped for and a little more, even with Peterman’s average play. Special teams have been very good at scoring. They have given up big plays that have hurt at times. Blewitt, while not as steady as we hoped has done the job.

The defense, as frustrating as it is, has kept us in all of the games and given the offense the chance to win.

Last year we failed down the stretch. I would say win three of the next five and we have had a successful season. Peterman has to rise to the occasion in at least one of the next three games.

VT looks to be our best chance and keeps us alive for a nine win season.

On Jeter, I don’t know why but a report said ND, Pitt and PSU are still on his list.

Comment by gc 10.19.16 @ 8:07 am

Chas… Spot on with the points you make.

It’s not so much that Pitt lost to OSU and UNC… it’s how they lost.

Fact is Pitt has been both LUCKY and UN-Lucky in its CLOSE Wins and Losses.

But considering the INCONSISTENCY we’ve witnessed with BOTH Player Performance AND In-Game Coaching… who wouldn’t take 5 and 2 at this point?

Pitt lost the 2 games they lost, and almost lost to PSU due to the fact the HC did not play more talented younger players in the defensive backfield and instead stuck with the “safer” more experienced and far less talented players, that quite frankly stink. They are an embarrassment. Giving up 540 yards and 453 yards passing in back to back games is an embarrassment. There is a reason why certain teams “break through” the barriers to a top 10 or top 20 threshold and why most teams don’t. Wandstadt and Chryst and Graham couldn’t do it and neither will Pat Narduzzi. And to listen to PN argue with reporters that ask basic questions is getting old. 5-2 is way below where this team should be. Lose one of those games is understandable, losing to NC is inexcusable. Watching the same players make the same mistakes and give up the same long throws is just nauseating. The passing offense is ridiculous. Peterman bears as much blame for those two losses as does Maddox/Lewis/Webb. Remember that these players have been getting run on, passed on for about two straight years. They’ve blown leads for two straight years. At some point, you have to realize as a coach that these guys aren’t getting it done. Alabama is starting 4 FR. Ohio State is starting multiple freshmen. Its OK to start young players. It OK.

Sports reporters asking tough questions and playing young players are nothing to be ashamed of. And quite honestly, losing all the good recruits to ND and other schools isn’t exactly a notch in Narduzzi’s belt.

Comment by TD 10.19.16 @ 9:49 am

To get it out of the way, regarding Jeter, I have a few comments, just my opinions: (1) I think his perspective should be about his future, not playing in ‘big-time’ situations- ask Robert Foster, then ask Tyler Boyd, in hindsight, what are the best priorities, and (2) This is one guy I’d love to get, I think he’d be a big hit at Pitt, but like many others I don’t really care THAT MUCH about this one individual player any more. In the end, due to all the influences a young man has to deal with, I suspect this fine young man may very well make a decision that may not be best for his future, but I wish him well.

Regarding our DBs, I have no idea what goes on in practice, and I understand PN makes his roster decisions based on that, but it seems pretty clear that Mitchell is an upgrade over Webb, which does make me worry that the best players aren’t always playing- it took an injury to get Mitchell on the field. I also believe Motley is playing a little better than Maddox, for that matter. And I certainly don’t believe that Coleman and Hamlin would be a drop-off from Maddox & Lewis, unless they accidentally tie their cleats together, but then again, maybe keeping the redshirts is best in the long run, who knows?

Comment by 1618mt 10.19.16 @ 10:07 am

The two losses were caused because Narduzzi and Canada would not let Peterman throw for a first down in the second half of both games. If that happens the defense is a mute point.

Comment by gc 10.19.16 @ 10:15 am

GC – I agree with you that early in the season our offensive play calling was far too conservative late in games, but when your pass defense is ranked #127 (or whatever) in the country, then that is your major problem, not your offense.

Comment by 1618mt 10.19.16 @ 10:22 am

Chas – once again the voice of reason on Pitt football. So even keeled. Love it and thanks!

Lol TD – look at the roster. They are playing plenty of young players. What are you talking about?

What are your realistic expectations of team in year 2 of a new coach with middle of the road talent in a P5 conference.

ND stealing those recruits is because Brian Kelly has been recruiting the WPIAL for 5 years now and has established relationships with the HC’s in the area … especially a Catholic school like Central Catholic whose players dream of ND.

PN and crew are in their 2nd year of recruiting the area and WPIAL coaches have no faith in Pitt coaches after the last half decade.

it’s a process. It’s not instant gratification.

Pitt fans hate waiting but that’s what happens EVERY (PoD shout out) time you hire a new coach. It generally takes 3 years to start reaching potential and 4 years to actually get there. See Chris Peterson (from Boise St) at Washington (who had more on roster talent then Pitt) as an example.

The guys in the secondary are playing because they are practicing the right way. PN’s building a defensive system that requires certain disciplines. Primarily stopping the run first and putting pressure on the QB. He’s going to play the guys that are disciplined in these areas over talent because he’s building a culture. Practice the right way and the more talented kids will get in. That simple.

Next year is when we should start to see some progress on defense. Year 4 (2 more years) is when it really should take off.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.19.16 @ 10:38 am

1618mt, no doubt the D isn’t good, but it is what it is. There is much more likelihood of the offense scoring more points than the defense giving up fewer points. This team will not win if the opponent has the opportunity to score the winning TD or field goal at the end of the game.

However we do have the firepower on offense to win most games. In the UNC game the defense got enough stops to win if the offense just got a few more fourth quarter first downs. To me that was a bigger fail than our D giving up that last drive. With those few more first downs, the D isn’t put into the position to lose.

We have won 5 games with a very poor pass defense, because our offense is really good.

When they go into a shell in the fourth quarter we lose, or nearly lose (PSU)

Comment by gc 10.19.16 @ 10:50 am

5-2, alright in my book. Should go 3-2 in the next 5.

Comment by alcofan 10.19.16 @ 11:58 am

Love the 5-2 but hate the Jekyll and Hyde nature of it. Going forward … what is realistic ? A win against VaTech isn’t out of the question .. nice home crowd expected and nearly 2 weeks to prepare. If Miami loses to VT and even worse to ND, they may be close to cashing it in and we may be able to surprise them. Clemson a loss. Duke should be an easier game and Syracuse should be a win too, especially given that they have allowed the most ppg to date of any ACC team. So, best case is 4-1 and worst case 2-3.

Comment by Tomas 10.19.16 @ 12:57 pm

If we win 2 of the next 3, that would have to be considered a major achievement as all 3 of the upcoming teams have Top 15 defenses (Total Defense)

VT #7
Miami #14
Clemscum #9 (many people in the Carolina’s reference clemson as that, since it’s a football factory ala miami of the 80’s and 90’s.)

The UNC loss was quite painful to bear as it reeked of SOP. I guess the Pedo State save, equaled that out. Would have been great to have both, since I can’t stand the Tarhole cheaters, almost as much as the Pedders.

Comment by Emel 10.19.16 @ 1:56 pm

Tossing Thabeets: Great call name, however, I am looking at two games (NC and Ok State) where terrible players cost them the game and I hold the coaches accountable. This 5-2 SHOULD be 7-0. A great coach is worth about 3 games, and a very good coach is worth about 2 games a year. And the offensive calls and execution in the 4th qtr is very subpar.

And PN seems to get real chippy with the local reporters–constantly taking shots at them.

Comment by Td 10.19.16 @ 1:56 pm

Duke & Syracuse we’ll be favored and the Nard Dog does very well when we are favored in not pulling a Pitt boner.

Comment by Emel 10.19.16 @ 1:58 pm

The Va Tech game is key. I guessed at the start of the year that Pitt would be undefeated at home, and I’m still leaning that way. Beat Va Tech and they should finish 7-0 at home. Miami and Clemson are gravy at that point.

Comment by KeyboardKev 10.19.16 @ 2:30 pm

TD – the secondary is just bad and it’s exposed in this defensive system/scheme. The coaches aren’t going to change their system just because they don’t have the players to fit it. Getting the system implemented and the practice culture around it is vital. Next year it should be better with an influx of new guys stepping up. If we don’t see progress, with PN’s players finally getting significant playing time, then it will be time to question the approach. The should improve next year though and finally really click in year 4.

That’s how it works in college.

I think part of the problem with Pitt is it being in a pro-city. The way you fix a college team isn’t the same way you fix a pro-team. It requires much more patience. In college you have a lot more system coaches on offense and defense. They don’t adapt to the players. The players adapt to them until they have a team full of kids they recruited. Because of the constant rotation in and out with the graduating recruiting classes the scheme is greater than the personnel.

In the NFL, it’s the opposite. Coaches have to adapt to the talent around them because of the salary cap and player contracts. It’s not a 100% turnover every 4 years. Coaches have to be a lot more reflexive and reactionary than they do in college. It’s also why you see less creativity and more copy catting.

Regarding the play calling in the 4th, it has been much better since UNC. I was at the GT and UVA game and the both were called beautifully. Even going back to the OKST game, NP was main culprit there as well as against UVA.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.19.16 @ 3:28 pm

Don’t put too much stock in Mitchell.

Coaches built him up a year ago, only to see him disappoint.

His POOR tackling was on exhibition this past weekend.

Sounds like he’s not coming here:

“I don’t want to play for a mediocre school,” he said. “I don’t want to play for a team that goes like 7-6. I want to go to a school that plays in the big bowl games or plays in the College Football Playoff. I don’t want to go to an average school because I don’t think I’m an average player. I want to make big time plays on a big time stage.”

Comment by 2$Chuck 10.19.16 @ 6:12 pm

2$Chuck I agree. My money is on Michigan. What sucks is Narduzzi has to kiss his ass all over again. To get kicked in the nuts. Again.

If someone mentioned it I apologize…

Kevin Stallings lost out on another recruit. Many people had 4 star F Kimani Lawrence Pitt bound. Today he tweeted his top 3 and Pitt was not in it. This class is so important with the losses of Artis, Young, Jeter, etc. So far not looking too good.

Comment by Pap76 10.19.16 @ 7:09 pm

TT, that NFL mentality you speak of doesn’t exist in Pittsburgh. 3 coaches in 47 years & all have won the big one. The Steelers never need a major fix or change in philosophy. What the Steelers have done is spoiled everyone with all the winning. I’m 35 & Pitt has been mediocre my whole life. People in Pgh have options & don’t support losers, just look at the Bucs big drop off in attendance & ratings this past season.

Comment by Nick 10.19.16 @ 8:18 pm

If you guys recall not being able to get the first downs in the games lost is why we lost. The play calling was sound. The execution wasn’t there on those offensive plays.

We aren’t good enough to be 7-0 yet (this year). It is harder to recruit at PITT. It takes longer to get really good.

Nick, I’m 74 and PITT has been mediocre “MOST” of my life. All big league cities support winners. That’s not new. Nick, also the Steelers were not always good. There have been a few long periods when they were scraping in the 60’s and especially after the 70’s super bowl wins

My grandson is a freshman at Rutgers. Man he is in for a rough 4 yrs. ride. Well, at least, he can send some weekends in the Apple absorbing some world class exposure to life.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 10.20.16 @ 1:39 am

Yes, we can be 7 and 0 … and we also can easily be 2 and 5. No question we have flaws … but this is what happens when you have 4 head coaches in 6 years. (didn’t count Heywood)

People recruiting against us has had a field day stressing the instability of this program. It’s a wonder we are where we are IMO.

And BTW … for you that think Pitt FB can get back to the the level tha it enjoyed in the late 70s, I suggest you become an OSU or Michigan fan. Those are the only 2 schools in the North who has a chance of maintaining such a status.

Comment by wbb 10.20.16 @ 6:42 am

Tossing – I agree, I don’t think Narduzzi should change his scheme, exactly for the reasons you said, good points (I do think he should change personnel).

BooBoo – Penn State sucks.

Comment by 1618mt 10.20.16 @ 7:18 am

Jeter’s comments tell us the sales pitch of the big schools. They will be effective with many of the top level guys. Hopefully we continue to get our share of the Boyds, Whiteheads, and other local elite players.

It is disappointing that this year is looking very badly for local success. Especially since it is one of our bitter rivals that is getting the lion’s share. Maybe because I was at Pitt for DePasqua and Hart, and when Majors came that the team we most wanted to beat was ND, much more satisfying than PSU or WVU. TD’s 303 yard game still my most cherished memory.

wbb, while I agree that It is very unlikely that Pitt will ever be in the hunt for a National Championship like they were with Majors and Sherrill, I think we could be a top twenty team if Narduzzi sticks around.

Comment by gc 10.20.16 @ 8:32 am

Awesome that the team gets to watch their next two opponents go head to head tonight. Hopefully they beat the crap out of each other.

Comment by gc 10.20.16 @ 8:39 am

I wouldn’t throw in the towel on the local talent. ND is in serious influx. Those Central Catholic kids may all be back in play.

When Jeter selected ND, it was obvious he’s looking for national exposure. Some kids just want to get away too.

Nick – the professional sports mentality is still there. You can have quick fixes in the NFL. It’s not the case in college. A great recruiting class will still take a few years to be a HR. You can’t just sign someone to plug and play.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.20.16 @ 10:03 am

Looks like another whitewash from the NCAA. Pitino knew nothing, just like Calipari and Paterno. Add Christy to the list.

Whatever happened to the buck stops here?

Pitino even invokes 911 in his remarks, sickening.

Comment by gc 10.20.16 @ 11:18 am

gc – I think with the right coach, Pitt (as well as the majority of power 5 schools) could be in the hunt for a national championship in hoops or football. This is why big-time coaches make all that money, and turnover is high in the profession. I’m not sure if we have the right guy in Narduzzi or not, but he’s our best hope by far in a very long time, so I’ll just enjoy the process and hope for the best. I’m a lot less optimistic on the hoops side, and I do wonder if our AD is in over his head.

Comment by 1618mt 10.20.16 @ 12:51 pm

Jeter to take official visit to Michigan this weekend. Pitt isn’t in the position to still not pursue Jeter, but this kid ain’t coming here. He just isn’t.

Pitt is still in play for some other talented D Lineman. I would hate to see us lose out on any of them pursuing Jeter…

Comment by Pap76 10.20.16 @ 12:58 pm

1618mt, I agree that coaching is the most important ingredient, but you also need the infrastructure, including the alumni and administration. It has to be a long term permanent commitment. Our Alumni base is very small, most with no commitment to sports and our Adm, while seemingly committed at this point has no long term track record.

College Football has changed since we were an elite program. We will be very lucky to sneak into the top ten once a decade.

Comment by gc 10.20.16 @ 1:22 pm

Comment by gc 10.20.16 @ 1:25 pm

Well gc if Narduzzi is actually 127th on the list of payment to head coaches he won’t be staying too long at his present position IMO.—I also expect to see Canada in line for either ahead coach offer or a substantial increase offer from one of the big time programs for the OC position after this year.

Comment by jrnpitt 10.20.16 @ 1:41 pm

Franklin and Strong are over-paid

Nard Dog may be asking for a bump in pay next year.

But if Pitt does want to be elite, it needs to pay elite and thats $5M/year for a coach. Pitt will never do that. And nor should they because Pitt is not a football factory and academics means something.

And we dont have the wealthy boosters like these big state schools whose identity is football.

Pitt’s in a good conference…finally. Our admin is committed to the front porch. Facilities are being built or upgraded. We are on the right path and have reasonable expectations.

Why not challenge for the ACC title every 4 years? I’d be totally fine with that. But top 10 every year is not sustainable without big time money, cheating and selling your soul.

Comment by TX Panther 10.20.16 @ 1:43 pm

TX Panther-

If Pitt is as you say, committed to the front porch, then they better be prepared to get in the 5 mil a year neighborhood or it’s going to be a delapidated eyesore of a front porch. Salaries aren’t going down. With ACC and hopefully soon to come ACC Network money, Pitt should be able to pay a coach in the 4 million a year range. If not then 7 to 8 wins a year is going to be the ceiling…

If Duzz is the coach we think he can be, he is going to want paid. I truly believe he likes it here and could maybe make Pittsburgh home. But if he starts winning 10 games a year and playing for ACC Championships, Pitt will have to pony up or essentially let the fan base know they are not serious about big time athletics.

Comment by Pap76 10.20.16 @ 2:04 pm

Pap – Duzz has to earn that too. You don’t go from his current salary to $5M. Whoever said Duzz is ranked 127th on salary list isn’t accurate. Pitt doesn’t report coaching salaries so he defaults to the bottom.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.20.16 @ 2:06 pm

Absolutely agree Tossing. Pitt won’t and shouldn’t be starting a guy at 4 million a year. But like I said if he starts putting up some 10 win seasons and winning some Coastal titles, Pitt better be ready to anty up. If Virginia was paying a bum like Mike London over 3 a year, Pitt better be willing to pay 4 for the right guy.

Pitt would probably be around 50th on the list. I think Narduzzi makes a bit over 2 million a year. For a 1st time head coach that’s fine. But if he starts winning, either pay the man or accept mediocrity…

Comment by Pap76 10.20.16 @ 2:13 pm

Pap – at some point they will have to pay. Correct. I believe it’s more like $3M per year right now. They paid more than Todd Graham plus they gave him a raise after last season that was reported as significant.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.20.16 @ 2:33 pm

I disagree with the defeatist idea that Pitt can’t be in the national championship conversation annually (notice I didn’t say win it, ask Jackie how those chips fall). What you are saying is that if Pitt (for whatever reason) brought in Urban Meyer and his staff that we would still be SOP. Can’t accept that at all.

Not saying it is happening but if it did then we are in the NC conversation real fast!!!

FWIW The dairy school isn’t getting what they are paying for!

How you overcome the slobs at Ohio Fake and the Wolves in recruiting is this:

1) Pitt has bigger name players in the NFL. So you have a much better chance being on the field at Pitt than being on the 2 and 3 deep.
Ask Robert Foster.

2) Pitt has an easier route to the 4 team playoff provided it get’s Sherrillesque again.

3) The city of Pittsburgh offers many more corporate job opportunities than even wobegone forlorn Michigan or Columbus.

I, too, was at Pitt during the halcyon days of Majors 1. And while I pine for a return to glory I have long since reconciled myself to reality. Last 30 years has been tough on the soul. But I do sense, for the first time by the way, that this is different. Not in that we are on the way to being the Bama of the north. But I don’t see why we can’t build and sustain a respectable program that consistently competes and every once in a while when the stars align crashes the big dance, ala Iowa. Narduzzi said Frank Beamer was one of his idols because he made a commitment to a school and rode it out. That tells me something about the man. I think he wants to build something here at Pitt and views that as a lifetime goal. And do it in his family’s backyard. Time will tell if the chancellor and board will continue to support that. And I hope the loser AD at Pitt has enough sense to stay out of his way.

VT pretty much ‘tore up’ the U thugs.

530 Total Yards, 258 on the Ground.

Don’t remember VT having this good of an offense since the Dick Vick days.

Their defense gave up a bunch of yardage thru the air, to the tune of 323. So as I mentioned in another post, we’re going to have to move the ball via the air some or we’re going to have a tough time moving on the ground.

Of course we’ve had their number, especially at Ketchup Bottle, but they have a new offensive minded coach now. Should be interesting.

Comment by Emel 10.20.16 @ 10:29 pm

VaTech’s FRONT Seven and it’s overall Defensive Scheme downright SCARY.

We’re going to find out if Pitt’s Offensive Line is really as “Good as Advertised” or possibly OVER-rated as some here have suspected.

And oh ya, we are going to learn a lot about Matt Canada’s Offense.

Interesting article in the PG about Zane Dudek. If Narduzzi wants to be strong locally, he shouldn’t overlook this kid. He is setting records, is 5’10” 190 has run sub 4.5, also a standout d-back. PSU has invited him to the OSU game.

Chas….an administrative note. Change Dixon’s twitter to Stallings twitter. I like Jamie but don’t give a rat’s ass what his twitter says now that he’s gone. Va Tech looked very good last night
