Friday Bits and Pieces; June 3rd

Filed under: Football — Reed @ 8:44 am

Matt Cavanaugh is a cinch for the College Hall of Fame… everyone knows that!

There, now that’s been said…

Here is a great starter paragraph for a Friday morning at work.  Pitt’s E. J. Borghetti narrates this great ‘look back’ at the Big East and Pitt’s place in it.  Now college fans tend to scoff at the BE when discussing it but at the time there was some great talent, and some great teams, competing in it.

Some of the highlights of this video are the very good QBs Pitt had back in the BE days; Gonzalez, Rutherford, Palko and my favorite Alex Van Pelt (best play-action faker ever).  EJ talks about our great WRs like Lee, Jells, and Fitzgerald and how we sold out Heinz Field (66, 207 attendance for a VT game).  Of course and without saying, even though I am saying, we see the crushing of WVU’s national championship hopes when Pat Bostick and LeSean McCoy put up the yards and the 13 points needed to win that match.

The Big East was pissed about that and Rich Rodriquez never recover from it and left the school. That part never gets old and the SOB doesn’t mention how well Pitt played even once.  Take a look at the Pitt student on the right at the 2:48 – 2:50 mark…:)

Speaking of RichRod – take a look at the first minute or so of this video.

Then E. J. follows up with another look back at Pitt vs Notre Dame series in history.  This is a lot of fun first because of the lopsided W/L record ND holds over us and secondly because even with that we seem to beat them when needed.  In other words Pitt rises to the occasion against them when the main stage lights are on.

Another thing to watch…

Here is something to listen to while you pretend to be working.  Peak’s latest podcast from the Trib-Review.  Interesting stuff and the first part about the SEC is pretty sickening IMO.  Chris gets into more Pitt-specific, recruiting mostly, stuff at the 10:00 mark.

Here is an article about the hiring of the design firm Populous to set the way forward with Pitt’s athletic facilities.  Honestly, I think Pitt should look even broader that just athletic facilities and make sure the whole of Pitt’s building, infra-structure and logistic requirements are well planned moving forward.

“At the ACC spring meetings in early May, Barnes described the master plan as “a 10-year vision” that will include facilities for track and tennis, as well as a potential renovation to Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.

“We’ll take that 10-year vision, we’ll pull two or three heavy-lift projects out and really start to develop concepts to those as soon as possible, so we can get out and share those with our donors,” Barnes said. “Those will be very impactful, transformational type of facilities.”

(Edit Note: When did we start adding “…ful” or “…al” to verbs to make them try to say something they really aren’t meant to?  How about this instead: “These facilities will have a greater impact and transcend regular athletic buildings’ normal uses.”)

Here is a fun website that lists the predictive outcomes of every Power-5 football games for the 2016 season.  Every page is the next week of the season.  I saw this on Facebook and thought you all would like it.

“We’re officially three months away from college football’s first contest – Cal vs. Hawaii – so it’s time to start making some predictions. No, we don’t just mean for division winners, bowl matchups and the College Football Playoff field. We’re going to make predictions for every game. Every game that involves a Power 5 team, at least.

Here is their end of season results…

week 14 good

You have to look at Week 2 at the least to see what will happen on Sept 10th at Heinz…  BTW – there is a great Facebook group called “Pitt Panther Fanatics” that has nice members, good and civil discussions and great videos… try it out if you have an account.

From the Pitt SIDs:

“PITTSBURGH—Pitt’s football game at Oklahoma State on Sept. 17 will be nationally televised by ESPN and kick off at 3:30 p.m., the Big 12 Conference announced today.

This will be the inaugural game between the two schools. The Cowboys make a return trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 16, 2017.

The Panthers already have three games earmarked for national telecasts this season. In addition to the Oklahoma State contest, Pitt’s home games with Penn State (Sept. 10, ABC or ESPN) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 27, ESPN) will also be nationally televised. ”

Howling!! Never have seen that before with the Pitt kid at 2:48!! WTF, he was a genius!

Dan – I used to sit in the bars and make eye contact with pretty girls then put my hand under my shirt and make it look like my heart was beating really hard… worked 66.89% of the time – but that student in the video was pretty inventive.

Comment by Reed 06.03.16 @ 9:20 am

8-4, I’ll take it. I’d rather that we at least finish 2nd in the Coastal but I’m assuming that we lose the tiebreaker with Dook.

@Reed, LOL!

Comment by Dan 06.03.16 @ 10:43 am

Is there anything more ridiculous than not only writing about recruits who are two years out (HS SOs) but also thinking it makes any difference at this point at all?

Dan – that tactic really did open up a lot of conversations. Here’s another ‘best move’:

After a date and when you are at that point where you’re saying goodnight and she is trying to decide to spend the night with you or not say: “You know, I was wondering if we’d get together tonight but I think the conversations we just had are as nice as getting laid.

That worked 89.45% of the time. No kidding!

Comment by Reed 06.03.16 @ 10:52 am

My best line was going up to a girl this time of year and ask “what are you doing New Year’s Eve?” ….. worked about 8.9% (which is real good for me)

Comment by wbb 06.03.16 @ 11:45 am

Populous has some impressive accomplishments on its resume, for sure.

But, then there’s Heinz Field.

Comment by PittofDreams 06.03.16 @ 12:38 pm

@Reed & wbb, I wish I would have known those lines!!! Yes, even your line wbb would have been a percentage improvement for me!! LOL

I always did the nice guy thing. I worked during school, so I always had a buck in my pocket, (more than I do now!!), so I would be asking girls at Zelda’a and Hemingways, “wanna go out to dinner this weekend?”

Nice guy worked in the long run, but not on a Friday night in a steamy bar!!!

Comment by Dan 06.03.16 @ 1:01 pm

How about this for a naive dweeb?? Caleco’s many a night.

Amy, bartender, huge crush on her. We talked and had a patron bartender relationship over a month or two.

Always wanted to ask her out. Friends just said “just ask her”.

Guess what this fool did?? Sent her flowers, right to the bar!!!!!!! LOL

Went in the next weekend, figured she would be there, waiting for me, with open arms, ready to run away with me………..

Shyly go in, “hey, what are you guys drinking?”

Nothing for an hour, finally I said, “hey, get any flowers this week?”.

She says, “was that you, they were really nice, thanks a lot. You guys having another?”.

Good Lord when I think back………..

Dan, sadly, if there is any lesson I learned early and often in life is that I’m not God’s gift to women. Go figure!

Comment by wbb 06.03.16 @ 2:14 pm

@wbb, ha ha. For me, and I know it’s a cliche’, but oh so true for me. “you’re my best friend”, “we can’t date, you’re like a brother to me”.

Ya, ya, ya, thanks a lot!! LOL

Dan72… appreciate it. Feel it is important to keep everyone updated on Reed’s favorite D-Back.

My line of falling to my knees, wrapping my arms around her legs and begging “please, please, please” worked .00001 percent of the time. You guys are on a roll today.

Comment by rkb 06.03.16 @ 4:36 pm

@wbb, that was a great Peterman video. Maybe Peterman is a more accurate QB than a lot of us give him credit for. Even Jester Weah should be able to catch some of those balls. I wonder how fast he can run his pass routes carrying a trash barrel? LOL?

Comment by Dr. Tom 06.03.16 @ 4:50 pm

Love the old and especially new videos

Comment by gc 06.03.16 @ 5:36 pm

I don’t think it is a question of accuracy with Sir Nate Peterman. His delivery is slow and will lead to pass knock downs on short throws in my opinion.

Good lines fellas.. Can’t say I was too successful at Zelda’s… until after I graduated. At that point, I moved my game to the south hills and hung out at the Saloon in Mt. Lebo. A lot of Steelers frequented that joint. I used the Gronk line when the girls asked what I did, I would say that I was an author and just finished my last book. They would always say something like oh yeah, what was the name of it…and the response was, I wrote the phone book and I have everyone’s number but yours! Okay, that was when we actually called girls at their homes….on a telephone. Corny, but often successful.

By all accounts, we will be getting some signals from Pat this weekend. Is it just me or are many of the kids coming to camp seem to be not yet rated? Any big time players?

Comment by dhuffdaddy 06.03.16 @ 9:26 pm

Emel – if we are playing fun with stats then how do you discount Sunseri so easily?

Very easily, I had to watch him play for 3 years.

Comment by Emel 06.03.16 @ 9:30 pm

Lies & stats Emel…lies & stats….

Comment by Jackagain 06.03.16 @ 10:34 pm

Emel,
So did I, So did I!
3 years of torture! ……of torture……of torture…….of torture…………of torture……….

The good thing about Tino Sunseri graduating from Pitt football is that since then I’ve never thrown a beer bottle at my TV.

Pitt Football Camp Weekend, hoping for Pat Signals.

Doing a podcast now – will revisit some old debates and have some new stuff.

I have to say that I was always pretty good with girls for two reasons (three counting the fact that I was tall – like 6’4″ tall – in college)

1) My father always told me to get women to be attracted to you walk straight up to them and start an actual conversation with them – especially the really beautiful ones as they too often either just get hit on or boys were scared to approach them.

2) After the conversations starts then really and truly listen to what they have to say (get them talking about themselves and their lives/thoughts more than you talking) and treat them like actual and interesting human beings instead of “walking vaginas” (my Dad’s phrase back in 1967). That alone will separate you from the pack.

Then give them your phone number and say thank you…and walk away. That walking away is the key. Half the time they would ask me to stick around.

Swear to God that advice hardly ever let me down. I didn’t get laid every single night but I had a lot of women call me up a day or three later ‘just to talk or something’…

The key then is NOT to go directly to a bar but do something else first -then have drinks… ask to continue the date somewhere else and that usually happened at my apartment, especially if they lived in a dorm. Ta Da!

I started doing that in my early teens and liked the results – plus it got me a lot of actual friends who were girls – unlike most teenage boys. Once you have done that they always gossip about boys to other girls and your name will come up a lot.

I gave that same advice to my son and all the young kids who worked for me in the Coast Guard and, if they had the patience, it worked for them too.

That will be a nickle – pay on your way out.
