Tonight is the night of the new uniforms for the Pitt sports teams. Yeah us!! We’ll see the old script back at the team identifier…

“A rebranding process that effectively started 19 months ago finally will reach its conclusion tonight, as Pitt formally unveils its “new” script logo, as well as updated uniforms for its 19 varsity sports.

The return of the beloved script logo, which served as the school’s primary athletic mark from 1973-1996, will be celebrated with a public fashion show at 6:30 p.m. today in the Petersen Events Center lobby. On Tuesday, ahead of the unveiling, the university announced the renaming of its Twitter and Instagram accounts.

“We are excited to make the full transition back to the script logo,” athletic director Scott Barnes said in a statement. “Not only will this move help unify our branding efforts, it also gives us an opportunity to celebrate the amazing history of Pitt Athletics. Wednesday’s event will give Panther fans an opportunity to see some impressive Pitt apparel as well as some of the other exciting improvements we currently have underway.”

This in itself isn’t isn’t really big news – Pitt started doing this willy-nilly back in 2014.  It took two years to get Nike onboard with all the teams’ gear.  Again, the colors will not change but the graphic design of the uniforms will. The public roll-out will be done formally this evening, along with a silent auction of memorabilia and will, I’m sure, make the Internets right away.

Here is a bit of new news though:

“Those uniforms won’t be the only thing unveiled tonight, either. Barnes said last week at the ACC’s spring meetings in Amelia Island, Fla., that the school also will release plans for certain facility upgrades, including a facelift for Petersen Events Center, which opened in 2002 on the site formerly occupied by Pitt Stadium.

“We’re seeing nice signs of growth there,” he said. “We look forward to executing our plan. Years from now, we’ll be able to see the fruits of our labor, but I like where we’ve gone this year in terms of setting up shop.”

Want a clear indication of just how much the Pitt football program is, or in this case isn’t, in the public eye? Get a load of this then“Ohio State loses top quarterback target Phil Jurkovec to Notre Dame”

Yeah, sad but true  – Pitt is not mentioned either in the title nor anywhere in the body of the piece.  Fox does say this however:

“Jurkovec, a sought-after dual threat, was also being pursued by Alabama, Clemson, Michigan State, Penn State, UCLA and others.”

Hate to say it again folks but one 8-5 season doesn’t shoot up us anywhere near the front of the nation’s football brain one bit. This is the hangover effect from those horrendous 2010-2014 years when we went through four HCs and barely had a winning record at 33-32.

Put a few more of those together though and keep Narduzzi onboard then people will begin to sit up and take some notice.

Speaking of recruiting…

Here is some of the latest recruiting info from Chris Peak of Rivals and the Trib.  He talks specifically about our offers out to HS QBs…. And how this staff is hitting Florida hard for recruits.

Which is nice because it seems we are striking out on the top end local talent and this is pretty timely as we just saw Bertke disengage himself from Pitt’s team.

His main point is hit right off the bat – out of 169 total offers we have out 51 have gone to Florida athletes.  Wow, I suppose.

Then he goes on to state that our total offers to PA players is much, much less and that PA and VA combined is 30!

Assuming that Peak’s current ‘offer’ listing is accurate since he’s talking publicly about it here are the offers Pitt has out now.

Jake Allen PRO 5.8 6’3″ 204 Fort Lauderdale, FL 7
Davis Mills PRO 6 6’4″ 194 Norcross, GA 2
Sean Clifford PRO 5.8 6’2″ 207 Cincinnati, OH 9
Lindell Stone PRO 5.6 6’1″ 202 Woodberry Forest, VA 23
Mac Jones PRO 5.8 6’3″ 181 Jacksonville, FL 15

Here is the list of “Dual” QBs and you can see that there are a few who haven’t committed yet.

Matt McKay DUAL 5.5 6’3″ 174 Raleigh, NC
Kenny Pickett DUAL 5.5 6’3″ 191 Oakhurst, NJ
Tate Martell DUAL 6 5’11” 203 Las Vegas, NV 1
Hendon Hooker DUAL 5.6 6’5″ 200 Greensboro, NC 19
Darriel Mack Jr. DUAL 5.6 6’3″ 215 Norfolk, VA
Kingsley Ifedi DUAL 5.5 6’3″ 215 Charlotte, NC

Interesting stuff and I don’t really follow recruiting all that much at this stage in the game – it is way too early and takes too much time and energy for me to get into.  January is a whole different story though – that is when the rubber starts meeting the road.

I still believe that actually getting the best that PA has to offer, especially Western PA players, onboard are way more important than offering FL kids.  It’s getting pretty embarrassing the way these top PA kids are turning their backs on Narduzzi this recruiting season so far.

As a reminder as to who those top kids are here is a little bit dated article by Chris Dokish (the source for me on good recruiting/recruits background.  Remember this article isn’t up to date as far as the recruits committments go…

From a sneak peek of the uniforms, all you folks that love the old unis will like the return of the stripes on the sleeves. I do, it is a mix of retro with modern numbers.

This also makes the all whites less all white and yes, less PSU like for those of you that care. 🙂

After watching the sneak peak video that UPitt posted, all I can say is that I am having pizza for lunch.

Will never understand why Pederson
alienated alumni and friends and fought
using the Script?? If anyone has
any insight would like to know.

I doubt Peterson had a problem with the script per se; he had a problem with the whole “Pitt” identity, which he saw as a local identity rather than a national one. For him, “Pittsburgh” was the name that he wanted to push, and the script Pitt was counter to that. I’m sure his fur was rubbed the wrong way when we went back to the Pitt identity as soon as he left for Nebraska.

HAIL TO PITT!

Great buzz around this program especially this time of year. Now let’s translate to a 9-10 win season.

Looking forward to tonight.

On recruiting, we offered a Charlotte TE and maybe he comes with the QB Ifedi. Not trying to downplay loss of Jurkovec.

So, if we start seeing Pat-signals tomorrow and recruits begin to commit, will the credit go to the staff or the new uniforms?

Uni’s of course Erie! And if we shit the bed this season everyone will blame it on the return of the Script.

My uniform thoughts, just to get them out of the way:

First, thanks to all the guys who beat the Script drum- it worked! (not that our current block Pitt on the helmet looks bad, because it doesn’t). But our identity is the Pitt script, not block and not Pittsburgh.

Second, we are one of a relatively small number of football programs with a proud and positive TRADITION, which is why I favor a traditional approach to uniform colors: blue and gold, and script. Schools like Oregon & Maryland have NO football tradition, so they’re in a better position to try uniform gimmicks, etc., but in my opinion the schools with strong tradition (like us) are better off maintaining that identity.

This means for one thing, I don’t like ALL blue (because we’re blue and gold), ALL white (that’s not even one of our primary colors), or ALL gold. Our colors are blue and gold.

One other side note, don’t like the light yellow pants.

As far as alternate color schemes go, assuming our existing dark blue and gold stay in tact based on the rumblings, here are my votes:

#1 – Obviously the brighter blue and mustardish would be one, and I’d definitely pick the one I linked from the Univ. of Texas site the other day (the one they thought was best, I agree).

#2 – Thinking out of the box: a black and gold (instead of blue and gold) combo, ala the steelers, pens and pirates tie-in, all scripted out Pitt style.

OK, I’ve had my fun. Hail to Pitt.

1618mt is right, the block Pitt didn’t look awful. The Dinocat or groundhog or whatever it was? Now THAT was awful!

Comment by Imma Man! Im 40! 05.18.16 @ 1:40 pm

The block letters look like a relic of the 80’s with the shading. If it was clean and solid maybe but it’s time for that look to go.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 05.18.16 @ 1:47 pm

TT – Moot point, it is time for it to go, everybody is on board with the Script.

Comment by 1618mt 05.18.16 @ 2:26 pm

Will the block PITT BLATHER heading above upgrade to script as well?

I just posted a look back at the various uniforms we have had over the last 40 years… all the photos in one place for your reference points.

I read the cleveland.com webside and they were bellyaching that OSU did not get Jurkovec. OSU has way too big a recruiting presence in Western Pennsylvania and Narduzzi will have to find a way to deal with it.
