Danny Marino was back in town taking part in a charitable donation Big Check photo op with Anthony’s Pizza.  Here it is:

Now… here is an old treat.  It is a 55 minute ‘look-back’ at Pitt’s football history.  It was made in 1989 so it is dated but for those who don’t really know why us old guys bitch so much – here is the reason.

Great to hear Johnny Sauer again

$5 tickets for the home opener to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Buy some and give them to your friends/family.

Thank you Reed! That was great except for ending with Paul Hackett starting 26 years of futility. The number of great players in the Majors-Sherrill era was amazing. Foge a great defensive mind was left with the keys to the Ferrari and crashed and burned. The program has never been the same.

Narduzzi needs to show this film to all recruits, especially the local guys.

Dude, Foodland, Cameron Coca-Cola, and the Cathedral with the grime still on it. Nice.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 05.05.16 @ 9:56 am

Really? You guys have to read this crap. link to yahoo.com

Comment by Pittastic 05.05.16 @ 11:53 am

An excellent look back!!! Agree that all recruits should see this!!!

Comment by Jerry S 05.05.16 @ 12:12 pm

Good for Jamie.

Pop Warner, Jock Sutherland and the guys that played for them are all but forgotten outside of Pittsburgh. Really should be more of an effort to keep their stories alive since they really are relevant to the beginning of collegiate athletics.

Should be more of an exhibit at the Great Hall.

Comment by gc 05.05.16 @ 12:28 pm

If we paid our players like we did under Jock, we’d indeed be competitive again.

It seems every school feels it has a history of being a major football power. Even Rutgers claims the first football game ever with Princeton. Rutgers won, right?

No question, PITT’s claim to fame is legit. But it always comes down to what have you done for me lately.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 05.05.16 @ 1:02 pm

Reed, by the way, you are the best. I look forward to your almost daily PITT fixes.

I am starting to verbally assault all the Penn State people I see as a matter of routine. I think they stay away when they see me coming. At least, I’m seeing a lot less PSU gear at the grandkids games.

My grandson plays for the semi final county high school lacrosse championship this evening. Win or lose, it is a bunch of fun.

Happy for Jamie. We know he can coach. Now he’s got at least one right Asst. to recruit.

How many with an ace O-Line win 6 or 7 games?

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 05.05.16 @ 2:04 pm

Here that text to Tossing’s link above:

“1. Pitt. The Panthers return four of five starters from a unit that helped lead the program to sixth in the ACC in rushing despite losing reigning league player of the year James Conner in the opener. Adam Bisnowaty and Dorian Johnson look to produce a third straight 1,000-yard rusher while anchoring the left side, while Alex Officer moves from right guard to center to replace Artie Rowell.”

Just catching up on some reading. SFPitt – loved your “Kelly’s Heroes”, 1970 quote from earlie today on the BB thread, Stop with the negative waves, Moriarty”, Oddball (aka Donald Southerland). One of my Top 10 All Time Great Movies. What a cast! Clint Eastwood, Donald Southerland, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles (“Crap Game”), Carroll O’Connor, Stuart Margolin, Gavin McCleod (Moriarity).

Really excited about the strength/depth of our OL this year. Expect to see a crushing running game (with enough passing to keep the DB’s honest).

I have been falling into the “tougher schedule” trap all spring, and thinking about a break even record. Lately, I have been thinking about HCPN during the NCAA Championship Game this winter. He was practically calling the plays before they happened. I’m beginning to think our head coach may be worth a couple “W’s.

I’m afraid the Kool Aid is starting to flow again this year. Move over TT!!!

Comment by Savannah Panther 05.05.16 @ 5:09 pm

The wins will happen if the starters stay healthy.

We are deep at RB & Oline of the offense, so the coaches “should” play to that strength.

We are also fairly deep at DE and S – I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what strength to play to on D, but HCPN has proven that side of the ball is his strength. I believe he will stay involved with the D to make that a better unit and he will once again trust his OC to “own” the O. This time though, he knows the guy and probably has a more “comfortable” trust level with Canada.

The special teams should also continue to be a strength, although Blewit will need to be more consistent.

The coaches should also improve with their in game management skills over last year where I believe they won a few games last year that previous staffs would not have.

I don’t consider Clemson a lock for a Pitt loss because of one thing – HCPN. He wants to win now and that “stirs” my koolaid.

As long as we beat State Penn, I’m fine…really.

And then we do it for the next 3 years as well.

Comment by TX Panther 05.05.16 @ 6:44 pm

Rest assured, Paturdo is burning in Hell. He reads the ‘Grand Experiment’ to child molesters each night and then tucks them in.

Comment by TX Panther 05.05.16 @ 6:48 pm

Savannah: Thanks for noticinh. Sutherland directed that line at Captain Stubing…er, Gavin McClouf. One of my all time favorite guy flicks.

Does the new JoPa story delay whatsoever the statue returning?
Nah, I didn’t think so either.

Comment by Gasman 05.05.16 @ 7:46 pm

TT – who would have thunk that Joe knew? The cow-tipping pedos should be ashamed that they worship at the feet of Sandusky’s accomplice.

Comment by Erie Express 05.05.16 @ 7:54 pm

Funny how it took 40 years to break that story when we all knew about the rumors. But they got their wins back so all is well.

PSU and the Commonwealth of PA paying off raped children in the millions and Sandusky’s lawyers trying to get him off on a technicality.

Paterno’s Family and friends still trying to protect his “honor”, even though he knew about the architect of “linebacker U’s” crimes for 35 years when he said he should have done more.

They should have got the death penalty and Paterno’s name stricken from the record books.

Talk about a cover-up

Comment by gc 05.05.16 @ 8:10 pm

Matters not to the Nittany Cult. The alumni are lobbying for a big celebration this fall: 50 years since Paterno became head coach. They really really don’t get it.

Cognitive dissonance, read the comments

Before the Pitt FB team runs out of the tunnel on 9/10 in their new uniforms, the Pitt fans should unite in entering Heinz Field wearing shirts with bright yellow lettering reading “JOE KNEW”.

All apparel proceeds should go to the molested victims or similar non-profit organization to help sexually abused children.

No comment section in the PG story. Cowards.

Comment by alcofan 05.05.16 @ 9:02 pm

I was just stunned today when I heard court docs said JoPa knew as early as 1976 about Sandusky. Just stunned….yeah right!

Comment by Dan 72 05.05.16 @ 10:24 pm

I will go one step further as I did when the original story broke. There may have been a coach or two that was involved on the other end of this. Power to influence careers is abused all the time.

The whole truth will never come out. Sad!

Texas a&m got crushed today due to social media. So important to think before you tweet.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 05.05.16 @ 11:37 pm

I think Trump can win PA with a combo of the my old racist uncle vote and the put the statue back vote.

Comment by Chris 05.06.16 @ 7:02 am

Trump’s getting blamed for the statue now too?

Comment by Jackagain 05.06.16 @ 8:56 pm

They should melt down the Paterno statue and make a brand new jail cell out of that metal for Jerry Sandusky.
