Here are the scrimmage stats from yesterday.

Bertke was 3-3 for 52 yards but Stocker seems to be holding onto the #2 QB slot.

The Trib has a few pieces today.

The team and staff had a scrimmage yesterday which apparently the defense won:

The scrimmage was closed to the media, but Pitt officials released statistics. Among them:

The defense recorded 13 tackles for a loss while not allowing a run of more than 12 yards (by quarterback Nathan Peterman).

Senior linebacker Mike Caprara recorded the only turnover (a 12-yard interception return).

Safety Jordan Whitehead, who is not injured, played sparingly, probably in deference to the weather conditions. “(Whitehead) played a little bit, and then we slipped him out of there,” Narduzzi said.

Peterman completed 6 of 10 passes for 129 yards, including a 47-yard play to running back Qadree Ollison.

Moss said he was the second running back to line up with the first team after Darrin Hall started. Hall carried six times for 12 yards and Ollison six for 31. “I would have liked to have seen us rush the ball more,” Narduzzi said.

Senior walk-on quarterback Manny Stocker continued to hold onto the No. 1 backup job, completing 3 of 6 passes for 16 yards. He said his brother, Jay, a redshirt freshman safety who led the team with six tackles, hit him once when he was scrambling. “He hasn’t picked me off this spring yet, but he keeps saying, ‘I’m going to get you.’ ”

Defensive tackle Shakir Soto, who said he has gained about 30 pounds to get up to 278 pounds after moving from end, said he remained on the first unit, lining up next to nose tackle Tyrique Jarrett.

Here is DiPaola on Nate Peterman adjusting to Matt Canada’s offensive ideas… and as we spoke about on here more deep throws:

Peterman is the unquestioned leader of a passing game that is undergoing an overhaul after the loss of receiver Tyler Boyd. New targets must emerge, but the most experienced wide receivers, Dontez Ford and Zach Challingsworth, are injured and have missed most of spring drills, including a live scrimmage Saturday at Heinz Field.

Both are expected to return this summer. Meanwhile, several players with minimal or no experience are trying to fill the void.  “Everybody thinks they are the guy who can go make the next play,” Peterman said. “That’s great to have at quarterback.”

Peterman is encouraged by the ideas flowing from Canada’s iPad.

“He’s very creative,” he said. “He has a lot of new and different things with formations and personnel to confuse the defense.”

One idea might be running backs, the deepest position group on the team, lining up wide with an empty backfield or tailback. Narduzzi also hinted at inserting more deep pass plays after Peterman finished 10th in the ACC in yards per completion (11.8) last season.

BTW – The scrimmage will be done much as like last season – the two co-captains will ‘draft’ the players until the roster names are emptied. I’ll drive up early to attend the media part for that draft then I’ll go meet people at a tailgate or two – more on that later.

Also on that page is a 17 minute interview with the graduated TE J. P. Holtz who we may miss more than we though at first.

The Post-Gazette Redshirt Diaries has three nice interviews done after the scrimmage:

QB Manny Stocker:

…and K Chris Blewitt:

PN corrected this … offense won.

Correction on yesterday’s #Pitt scrimmage: despite late push by the D, it was the offense that claimed victory, 32-30! (H/T Adam Bisnowaty)

Yeah Manny – he’ll lead us to Victory!!

I’m not going to lie, I would love for Stocker to pull a Peterman and steal QB1 going into the season. Mobile, athletic QB who can make plays with his feet. Yes, please.

I know it’s a pipe dream (REPEAT: I know it’s a pipe dream) but adding a mobile QB to that fleet of RBs that can go over the top every now and again just sounds like the type of college offense we got a glimpse of with Fraud but Pitt has been missing since Walt left.

I’m excited to see what Canada does. I really believe we’ll be more aggressive this season as well as more uptempo … and more creative.

Conner says he’ll be playing game 1 … I’m not going to be that guy who bets against that young man. He’ll be done with treatments in May … if he gets the green light 2 weeks later he’ll have 60 days to be ready for camp. Lemieux and Eric Berry and another Erie legend, RB Brian Milne, have shown that you can get back quickly when cancer free.

Just try telling Conner he won’t be starting … Good luck with that one Narduzzi.

Nard Dog has mastered invisibility. The man is a genius.

OCs are a dime a dozen. Their primary job Is to match their offense to their players talents, especially the QB. Their 2ñd priority is to evaluate and recruit good players. It does not really matter if the QB is a dual threat QB or not. You can win in college either way.

Watching the Pirates. New announcer Joe Block was made for radio.

Ray – Adaptable offense = not pro-style.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 04.10.16 @ 2:51 pm

stats show 37 rushing attempts and 24 passing attempts. roughly 100 yards rushing and roughly 200 passing.

13 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks (maybe the sacks are subset of TFLs ?) and 1 INT.

not sure what to make of the stats without knowing the situations… It feels like a lot of potentially drive killing TFLs though it’s hard to tell without more information. So never mind…

I guess we should count our blessings. Michigan State doesn’t even release any stats from their scrimmages.

I know there’s a few golfers on this site. How many of us have done what Jordan Spieth did today? Hit one into the water on a par three, lose it and chunk the next one into the drink!

Took a 7 on a par 3 and cost himself the Masters. A real test of humility for a wonderful young Christian man.

Oh goodness. I ran into the bathroom and hid.

@Dan72… Today Played my 2nd round of golf this year and I live in NC..,I did “reverse Speith” that’s where I drink a cold one then ” chunk it” into the H2O

Comment by BigB 04.10.16 @ 6:55 pm

Dan 72 – I can check yes to all your golf references EXCEPT costing myself the Masters – at least not yet…

That was tough to watch – I had just finished 18 myself. I had two 7’s today, but both were on par 5’s.

I thought he handled it well. Jordan has played in three Masters – winning one and finishing second in the other two. Watch out!

His parents are both from PA by the way.

Comment by Erie Express 04.10.16 @ 6:56 pm

Took a 9 on a par 5 but won the beer drunking contest..

Comment by BigB 04.10.16 @ 6:57 pm

Pulling hard for Jordan. 5 birdies and a bogey on the front side; 3 bogeys, a quad, 2 birdies on the back side. Boy, talk about not finishing a game – or only playing half a game!!!

Upitt: what’re the odds that Jordan won’t finish another Major like that again? I’d say, pretty high!

Speith broke my heart today….

Fingers crossed that the offense will make the big leap and consistently stay out of its own way (eg, one bad play won’t nearly guarantee a loss of rhythm and the end of the drive) this year.

Comment by Deepelemblues 04.10.16 @ 8:05 pm

Would like to see the whole video and that angle kinda sucked, but otherwise good stuff, Kuku.

I’m not going to ask for much from our freshman incoming class, just one Conner, one Boyd and one Whitehead from the group would be enough to make more happy.

Brandin Knight hired by Rutgers. Makes sense … B1G team from his home territory …. new HC coach from Northeast.

Comment by wbb 04.11.16 @ 6:04 am

I should say that Knight’s hiring hasn’t been confirmed by Butgers yet NJ.com is reporting it.

Jordan Speith proving how great Tiger Woods was.

His string of wins without missing a cut, his mental discipline will probably never be matched.

Will be interesting to see how Speith comes back from his collapse. He is very young, hope he can put it behind quickly. A very big blow to a golfers ego. Similar but not the same as Norman’s collapse.

Just got back from Myrtle Beach, played Heritage and Arrowhead, too bad my game really wasn’t up to it.

Comment by gc 04.11.16 @ 7:45 am

The TFL’s are very exciting, hope they are because of great defensive skills and not lapses on the offensive line.

Comment by gc 04.11.16 @ 7:50 am

Looks like Ollison had a strong day as did Jay Stocker.

Comment by gc 04.11.16 @ 8:07 am

Tiger Woods – Yeah, he was once great, until the public morality downfall, which made him a mental mess, from which he never recovered.

I thought Moss looked good in the clips, btw…

Speith is the youngest winner ever at the Masters. He holds the all time streak of leading for 7 consecutive rounds. He’s been in 3 Masters. Tied for 2nd, won, tied for 2nd.

Let’s see where he is when he’s done winning like Tiger.

Comment by Jackagain 04.11.16 @ 2:44 pm

He needs to stay away from Swedish woman and whores.
