Open Thread: Pitt-GT

2pm, with the syndicated ACC Network or ESPN3 (hooray, Cleveland coverage for me).

Sorry for the extreme last minute, but I just got home from some family related activities.

It’s not a must win (yet), but it takes the pressure off the ACC Tournament for Pitt to get the win now. In certain years, Pitt would be in trouble for the NCAA Tournament. This year, there are so many teams with worse situations than Pitt; that it isn’t nearly as bad as it can feel when you have watched just this team this year.

Mailing the open thread in at this point.

Pitt basketball has turned into a program that wins early against inferior schools, loses occasionally to those schools, gets one signature win a year, just makes the 20 win season and shits the bed on everything in between.

GC …. They made those sweet 16s with thei inside game in a league that allowed them to play rough and tumble basketball.
I could write another thesis on Carl Krausers shooting form.
Shooting form with late game weary legs always shows up at the FT line. Until this year Jamie’s teams have been in the bottom 5% of the league in that area.

Again, I don’t blame Jamie for this. No HS hotshot wants any coach messing with his shooting form. Jamie obliges as do 60% of D1 coaches. So it’s back to recruiting a good shooter.

As far as what’s happened to Smiths shot… He’s always had a very flat launch angle. He could get those shots off easily at Coppin. Not so much in the ACC.

I do agree it is time for a coaching change, primarily because of the recruiting woes. When Huggins can recruit top kids to WV and Jamie can’t get them to come to Pitt it is time for a change.

However, it is not going to happen this year, and maybe for several because of the contract.

I agree on the launch angle, but he is missing wide open shots. Pretty much benched after that.

The sad thing is that Jamie has to replace four of his best guys next year and we haven’t heard a thing about anyone being interested.

Best foul shooting team since Miller and Mathews.

Jeter most remarkable.

So, if we lose to Syracuse and miss the tourney after crushing Duke, second yearly collapse in a row, what does Barnes do?

Comment by gc 03.06.16 @ 10:44 am

lots of talk about improvement over the past several years….but no improvement…same mistakes and same results. pitt has a 4 year starter at PG and 2 3 year starters at forward….there was lots of optimism at the beginning of the year but here we are in almost the same position we were in last year.

I do not have the gumption to try and look into this myself…but I wonder, if you took a coaches salary and divided by a reciprocal (as in, rank/100) of his team’s average final ranking for the last 5 years, you would sort of get an “impact quotient.” You would have to do this for 30-40 coaches, then look at the rankings high to low.

My guess is Dixon would be in the lowest 10%…in other words, Pitt is spending the highest $$ for the average rank it gets.

Barnes can contribute a few ideas / suggestions – but for the most part his hands are tied due to the contract ; the buyout would be significant

probably at least 2-3 more years – possibly around 5 years – before a reasonable buyout can be negotiated (if the program continues at this current level)

DD – Paying for A rare IPA and frosted mug and getting natural ice or schlitz.

This Dokish character is a real winner. He still defends Dixon. So happy this blog isnt such a shit show like him. National Writer my ass. A guy with the internet and a twitter account. Another Sheep follower.

Upitt…When I went to Pitt it was goebels! Like $4.99 a case. Nasty beer but it did the job!

Comment by DD 03.06.16 @ 12:56 pm

Guys the buyout is a joke to people with money! 5-10M could be raised by Barnes with less than 5 phone calls. Some Alum have Millions and Billions of dollars. If Barnes is worth his salt raising that money is done before lunch Monday morning.

Erie, Buzz “Curley” Williams took a half million pay cut to come to the ACC from Marquette. Ever been to Wichita?

Comment by Jackagain 03.06.16 @ 2:49 pm

Jack – change is needed and change would be good for this current group of undergrads. I personally don’t think much will be done UNLESS we miss the big dance.

Never been to Wichita…they are not very good this year either. They were ranked off and on, then lost in the early round of conference tourney.

Comment by Erie Express 03.06.16 @ 3:06 pm

Wichita is a dust covered crap hole with nothing to do…

@gasman, ha ha ha!!! “remember when we played like Virginia, now we play like Rutgers”. Excellent.

@pittofdreams, ah c’mon, I know some things for sure. Pitt will beat up Albany, Jacksonville State and Sacred Heart next year to run up a nice 13-1, 12-2 record to get everyone pumped up for the season!!!

@anyone, tired legs?? These kids are 20, 21, 22 years old. C’mon. What about the other 350 Division 1 schools? They all have tired legs too.

Comment by Dan 03.07.16 @ 9:39 am

When you cut the cream puff icing off the cake, you are left with the conference record. That is the tale of the tape.

Everyone schedules creampuffs? Sure, fine, all the more to cut that crap off to really see what’s goin’ on.

ACC record last three years.

9-9
8-10
11-7
