Some Things To Think About…

I’m off to a cabin by the water to go on a three day “Writers’ Retreat” with my amazingly talented daughter.  I will be secluded so that I can actually do more of my ‘other’ writing project and not just sit around thinking and talking about it.

I am prepared to have my work totally eclipsed by whatever my daughter does with her artistic ability. Plus I can drink during the daytime if needed without the Boss seeing me.

Here is a parting article to give you some small things to talk about…

Post-Gazette Pitt Football Overview (P-G)

Football Stats from 2015 (P-G)

Luke Getsy rises in the NFL coaching ranks (Trib):

13 local players in NFL combine (Trib):

Here is an interesting take on the first PSU QB since Kerry Collins to have any NFL interest at all… (Pennlive):

I saved the best for last.  Here is an article from the Pitt News reviewing a local (Sewickly, go figure) author’s book about the gayity of football. Yes, you read that correctly.

This is a subject which we on the Blather have known for ages. That is that anyone on the other Pitt blogs and message boards who played organized football is much less hetero and manly than those that did.

Except for the readers of the Pitt Blather who played football – they are as manly and hetero as wbb or even PoD… but not as much as the writers on here.  That is too a high bar to jump.

This is my favorite part.

Watching men watch men in tight spandex lightly spank each other for support before they head in for a group shower does make me think there’s something innately homoerotic happening. But Kichi said it’s all a ruse so men can prove they’re straight by acting gay and not getting turned on.

A bit confusing but that’s OK, it is, after all, a student newspaper and a Sewickly author.

But wait! There’s more!

“But then I have to ask, prove to who?” Said Emily Deering Crosby, a visiting instructor in Pitt’s Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies program. Crosby, who focuses mainly on gender and race, has also written about double-bind rhetoric in sports culture.“Gender is the process of becoming,”

Crosby said, adding that as we grow up, we’re taught to reaffirm our gender over and over again. For self-identified men, growing up often means shedding any trace of femininity or homosexuality — two characteristics many people mistakenly associate.

“By high school, [young men are] completely isolated from each other,” Crosby said, adding that they’ve become repressed and angry — and what better place to take out that identity confusion than on the football field?”

“The process of becoming”… everyone get that OK?  No clarification needed with that phrase is there Ms Fancy Pants Hopefully Not Tenured Pitt Professor?

To all of that I say Pitt has changed in some many beautiful ways since the mid-1970’s and the fact that they have this class is directly connected to the crappy football teams we have fielded since then.

I’m not saying those study areas are a bad thing – in this day and age they might be 100% necessary, I just think Pitt sucks at football and this is the reason.  So I’m taking back everything negative I have ever said about Walt Harris, Wannstedt, Pederson, Graham and Paul Chryst because it really wasn’t their fault. Sorry guys!

Honestly, seeing books like drivel that being published makes me think I’ll outsell Stephen King.

See you on all on Friday….

Well, interesting read to start the day. Now I am really looking forward to seeing tomorrow night “Love Fest.” Turns out Slimy Rick should have had some male escorts available for recruits.

H2P

Comment by pmdH2P 02.23.16 @ 9:37 am

This is one article I’m truly sorry I read. A student would have to be deranged to take a class like that in the first place, then they’d be susceptible to the manipulative trash of professor Crosby. Students would be way better off taking the class on vampires.

Comment by 1618mt 02.23.16 @ 10:00 am

Anyone else a fan of Arrested Development? They had a running gag on that show where the gay psychiatrist brother in law always thought everyone else was gay, too, which was part psychological projection, part wishful thinking. That’s exactly what that article reminded me of. A gay guy says straight guys playing rough and tumble sports are all secretly gay…yeah, you wish, don’t you, pal?

Comment by Jeff 02.23.16 @ 10:47 am

The mind boggles.

Comment by gc 02.23.16 @ 11:04 am

Too many courses, profs and students willing to waste their time and money is why 1. College education costs are sky rocketing past affordability.2. Students who graduate from these courses are totally unprepared to earn their way in the real world and 3.One of the reasons I now believe a friend of mine who was ex CIA told me around 1970 to fear the Chinese they had set about infiltrating and upsetting our social mores to destroy the our higher education system(which feeds our total education system) the Catholic church (Liberation Theologans started popping up in Latin america then moving into the mainstream church) and work this all to destoy the American family. Pitt used to be known for eminent professional graduate schools ie Medicine Law Public health Engineering and for yeoman like undergraduate schools like Engineering, Business pre pofessional, Education etc.It is like the rest of the country has been Slouching Towards Gomorah . maybe the Chinese have won.

Comment by Pitt60 02.23.16 @ 11:05 am

emily should Not be paid for her stupid liberal attitudes toward football.. obviously she has an agenda

Guys, thanks for the great responses! I fully agree. Reed is laughing all the way to the cabin. LOL
PS Remember, It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve:>)

Yes indeed, Interdis 80 started me on the road to perdition.

Comment by steve1 02.23.16 @ 11:41 am

For me, my gayness started when I had to send Valentines to boys as well as girls in elementary school!

What a bunch of BS!

Reed, anytime you get to spend with your daughter is priceless. I leave you with a quote from Shakespeare

“Brevity is the soul of wit”!

Comment by Dan 72 02.23.16 @ 11:44 am

Yes, I second that, sounds like a great trip with your daughter Reed, hope you guys have a fantastic time!

Comment by 1618mt 02.23.16 @ 11:49 am

Let our first class philosophy department solve this one: If football is homoerotic, are the guys that quit playing in hs to chase girls on Friday night more manly than the gridiron gladiators? Is the pen really mightier than the sword?

Comment by AJ 02.23.16 @ 12:27 pm

The opening paragraph of this made me think of Funny Farm with Chevy Chase. I imagine Reed settling into the cabin, getting his coffee/tea all ready, positioning everything on his desk perfectly, opening the laptop…then looking out the window to the cabin across the lake with the Narduzzi Family pulling into the driveway.

Just jaggin’ ya, Reed. Good luck!

Comment by tacocat 02.23.16 @ 12:34 pm

Well the PSU coaches all took showers together during the paterno regime, so there’s that.

Comment by Chethejet 02.23.16 @ 12:44 pm

Overestimating the amount of homosexual people or ‘latent homosexuality’ or ‘homoerotic feelings’ or what-the-hell-ever is quite popular these days.

The percentage of the population commonly believed to be homosexual/bisexual (they’ve done surveys on it): 20-25%

The actual percentage of self-identified homosexuals: 2-4%

The actual percentage of self-identified bisexuals: less than 1%

Tying football and male bonding in sports to homosexuality is a deliberate attempt to demean and emasculate heterosexual men and conventional standards of manliness. Those cavemen homophobes are actually homos themselves! That will surely twist their bigoted minds in knots.

Football and sports in general (and manliness as well) have nothing to do with homosexuality or heterosexuality, there’s plenty of gay men with honor, fortitude, great physiques, etc., and plenty of “90-pound weakling” (although these days it’s more like 250-pound weakling) wimpy straight guys with no good character or honor in them. All this pigeonholing has agendas behind it and completely misses the incredible complexity and range of difference in the human race.

Comment by deepelemblues 02.23.16 @ 2:39 pm

If conservatives didn’t ignore accepted scientific and economic theory I’d jump ship in the next election. The social far left is fucking crazy. It’s 2016, I think if someone had season tickets and liked to bang dudes they’d just do both.

Comment by Chris 02.23.16 @ 3:30 pm

Which conversation is less likely to result in a conclusion – OCS or homoeroticism in football?

Query (no weird homophone intended) – if football were homoerotic, would an OCS be more or less likely?

H2P!!!

Much bigger issue than gays playing football or gays fantasizing about gays playing football.

Sexual Harassment and Rape on campus by football players.

Maybe Louisville did have the answer, pay for hookers. nlol

Comment by gc 02.23.16 @ 4:07 pm

GC – I think you’re right, the harrassment/rape issue is infinitely more prevalent than the 2% issue, but the fact is that all kinds of immorality are commonplace these days. Tough job for coaches.

Time to get back to sports. Looking forward to the Louisville game, and hoping (maybe wishful thinking) that we get our mojo back.

Comment by 1618mt 02.23.16 @ 4:26 pm

1618mt, No worries about the L’ville game. According to Pat Forde the fix is in (or should be in) http://sports.yahoo.com/news/forde-minutes–referee-subterfuge-could-make-march-more-interesting-062724966-ncaab.html

Now let’s hope the ref’s get the ACC memo

Comment by DionJag 02.23.16 @ 4:53 pm

Way to reaffirm your hetero masculinity Reed. I think you completely missed the mark on this one.

Comment by MidWestPanther 02.23.16 @ 5:03 pm

Pat Forde is a dick! LVille has been getting away with way to much crap all season. So if Pitt wins the fix is in? Screw you Patty!!

Pat Forde is an idiot.

Both will make the big dance and UPitt will be happy for Archie’s Dayton Flyers.

When PITT makes the big dance, happy will not be the description of choice…

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Digdug 02.23.16 @ 7:21 pm

I say bring back the old Reed, warning us to lower our expectations on this or that Panther…

Note to Pitt Athletic Department – Please let Reed watch football practices – ever since the ban he’s lost his laser focus and now he’s going off the rails.

Go Pitt.

Comment by MajorMajors 02.23.16 @ 7:46 pm

63 Team – stupid isn’t liberal or conservative. Stupid is just stupid. And you are right that author certainly seems to have an interesting agenda…
Isn’t it great to be in America where you don’t have to pass an intelligence test to have an opinion!I wonder if they have classes like this at NC for all their athletes.

Is there really any right direction or even diverse direction any longer?

What the hell an I talking about.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 02.23.16 @ 9:13 pm

Comment by panther94 02.23.16 @ 10:54 pm

Really 94? Maybe you mean BOTH WAYS, right? Oh yeah, uh huh.

Who doesn’t hope for a new start AND anus tart every frickin’ day.

Hey panther, your auto correct is demented…..what kind of stuff do you type on that thing….lol

maybe it inferred that you didn’t want the game to start with their heads up their butts.

Didn’t the ancient Greeks play sports nude? At least we wear clothes.

Arrested Development was hysterical. I only found out about it in re-runs, and would catch it hit and miss, but I always howled.

Can we get our heads out of our asses in time for the game tonight? Reed, what have you done?

Pitt Dad – hold on to that thought. Do you really think the NCAA would position Pitt in a bracket that we would benefit from?

I have always thought the sport of wrestling was gay. The uniforms, the man on man straddling. Yes those guys are incredible athletes without doubt.

The start of every match had me on the “refuse to participate side” when wrestling was what they wanted to do in gym class.

The “you get on all fours and you get behind him” that seems gay to me.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 02.24.16 @ 3:12 pm

Can anyone tell me what Comcast channel the game is on in Pittsburgh?? Thanks

Comment by JoeKnew 02.24.16 @ 3:16 pm

How MFing stupid is it that, in Pittsburgh, this game is on ThisTV, which, since I have DirecTV, I don’t get. I can watch it online, but there is no excuse for a game, this late in season, to be on a fourth rate channel.

Comment by Carmen 02.24.16 @ 3:25 pm

Not on in Lancaster, however ESPN does have on several horrendous games in its place. THe 8:00 time must’ve killed it, as was mentioned earlier. ROKU will have to save the day again.

Comment by 1618mt 02.24.16 @ 3:30 pm

What channel number is thisTV?? What a stupid stupid decision!

Comment by JoeKnew 02.24.16 @ 3:36 pm

It’s on ESPN3 fellas. If you have Apple TV, ROKU, Amazon Fire, Google Chromecast, etc … you can watch the game on your TV just like it was a network.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 02.24.16 @ 3:51 pm

PITT WILL BE TOUGH TO BEAT IN MARCH
Pittsburgh is projected to land somewhere between a No. 7 and 10 seed. The Panthers will be one of the most dangerous second-round matchups for No. 1 and 2 seeds, largely due to their ability to crash the boards. Giant Killers (Insider)

Before you laugh at the statement above, it is from ESPN page:
link to espn.go.com

Comment by TVax 02.24.16 @ 4:13 pm

No doubt ESPN3 will black out the game here online. It’s listed as Subject to Blackout.

Comment by Jackagain 02.24.16 @ 4:21 pm

TVax, ESPN must be unfamiliar with our past. I’ll believe it when I see it…

Giant Killers? We’ve never in NCAA Tournament history beaten a higher seeded team…..not once. If we get that monkey off our backs this March it will be a first.

Comment by Jackagain 02.24.16 @ 4:26 pm

For your pre-game reading, here is, let us say, a not very charitable view of PSU and the in-process Paterno statues.

Comment by Pitt it Is 02.24.16 @ 4:33 pm

@Pitt it Is, ya me too. Just trying to be positive and have them surprise me.

Don’t get me wrong, loved the Syracuse win and love the fact that we own their ass.

However, I’ve seen this movie before. Don’t even have to beat them both for me…….
just win one of the next two…then I’ll start getting a little giddy!

Comment by Dan 02.24.16 @ 5:01 pm

Pete- Thanks for the link. A brutally honest appraisal of the jopa cult. So good that I had to check the bio of the author. I thought he had to be a Pitt alum. He is not.

Comment by dinosaur 71 02.24.16 @ 5:21 pm

Hey, don’t get on ThisTV, they have most of the
tv I watch!! The Munsters, Bewitched, Hogan’s Heroes………..

Comment by Dan 02.24.16 @ 5:29 pm

If it’s blacked out it means it’s on a Non-ESPN channel. It will be on TV. That’s all subject to blackout means.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 02.24.16 @ 5:53 pm

Team fouls we even at 17 and Pitt beat Louisville at the foul line. The difference in this game was that Louisville got a hot streak will less than four minutes in the game and Pitt seemed tentative. But Pitt played a game that they could have won. Duke up next. H2P!

Comment by MariettaMike 02.24.16 @ 10:17 pm

Saw on tv students rioted at some college and burned a quad bldg. including adm, dorms, science and some other dept. All because the college wanted to change the student senate in some way. This attitude is why we see college kids on tv saying they want socialism and supporting Bernie Sanders enthusiastically. These kids need to have their special grants minority status benies and loans yanked and make them work their way through school. We used to leave class and jam Oaklnd traffic, remove trollies from the wire and carry Vollkswagens with drivers onto the Heinz Chapel lawn for important things like upsetting undefeated Penn State or Notre Dame(1959 season)These same students will someday be moaning about not being able to get a job because some employer looked at their student history or criminal record or no one wants to hire a Female or Native American Issues or Cultural Failings graduate. A lot of this is caused by imbedded tenured faculty like Reed referred to.

Comment by Pitt60 02.25.16 @ 11:25 am

TVax I laughing. If we lose the last 3 ACC games and the opening round of the ACC tournament we may be seeded from 7 to 10 in the NIT tournament.

Comment by jrnpitt 02.25.16 @ 4:24 pm

Our senior play in high school was Our Hearts Were Young and Gay by Cornelia Otis Skinner A well known playwright. It was about 2 guys chasing 2 girls around the deck during a trans atlantic ship crossing.I hate to think what would go with that name today.2 guys chasing 2 guys on a cruise ship? In the 50s we did not sanitize it by saying gay it was “Queer”or “homo”.

Comment by Pitt60 02.26.16 @ 4:11 pm

What is it with Centre county and State college, even the Catholic Church gas to get in on the Sandusky Boogie up there. 8 Priests in the State College church!!! were offenders according to the churches records. The rumor was that this was a major problem up there and that is why the powers not just in Penn State but Centre County squashed everything that came up. K. Kane is now done as a politician so she does not care what is coming out. As of now we have The athletic department of the state university, local politicians and Catholic Priests all birds of a feather in State College. It appears their is something rotten and it is not in Denmark! I still think Pitt should not have PSU on it’s schedule. Let us hope we just win solid in September.
