Open Thread: Virginia-Pitt

Bleeping hell. For whatever reason the local channel that carries ACC Network in Cleveland is going with BC-Louisville. Unbelievable.

Pitt is a home dog in this one. Virginia has had some bad games, but more often than not they have been nearly as good as expected.

They play their stifling defense and slow, efficient offense. When they are on, they look as good as any team in the country.

Pitt, in their losses, have been buried early (Louisville game is the lone exception). Offense struggles and the defensive effort lacks because they are frustrated.

Lots of football recruits for the class of 2017 are in attendance so that is something. Not to mention a couple basketball recruits. The Oakland Zoo camped out in the Pete for this one, and it is a “blackout game.”

Some of it is the different style of the ACC, but VA had swagger, they are physically and mentally tough.

This year’s game, capping off the Panthers’ spring practice, will take place April 16, and admission will be free.

Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in awhile..

In this case Upitt on the SB call. Haha

winedog – good news on “free” as the Spring game will be one day after our collective government entities drain my bank account.

don’t need slog ball but do need shooters & dribblers, Pitt has neither.
I do not see what Dixon sees in recruits obviously.

Cyanide Steve did it to us twice with JD – not only would his buyout be enormous at a per year basis but then you would have to shell out enormous bucks to get a new coach for those years bought out and for 6 million a year that it would add up to by paying for buyout and scandlous coach such as Rick Partino or John Calipari – one and done heaven (which means something else to Partino).
THIS IS TONGUE IN CHECK (MOSTLY )- Get Barnes to accept head coaching position and make JD his assistant – would JD have the integrity to leave without a buyout or sit on bench and collect his 15 million?
Much more of Pitt BB and I’ll have to triple my meds, doubling aint working.
Seriously I dont know I can watch another BBall game – I spent the morning talking with 67YOA Gary Nelson about Duquesne BB – help. LOL

I think we have better shooters & dribblers on this team than we’ve had in quite some time. The problem is when they actually go up against a tough defensive team. They just fade rather than fight back. That used to be what we did to teams.

Comment by panther94 02.08.16 @ 3:11 pm

@gc – Your negativity is fair. This team has been an absolute downer. The defense has been beyond confounding. I have to reluctantly concur that a “turnaround” for this team would be beating Duke or winning a couple in the ACC tourney and barely making the NCAA.

@HbgFrank – Agreed on that. Jamie has warts, but he’s a fighter.

Going off what 1618mt said: We still have some opportunities. Our last four regular season games line up decently for a run (two tough, but faltering, opponents at home, two teams we’ve already beat on the road). But as multiple people have pointed out our formula is basically shoot 50% and hope the other team is throwing up bricks, or turning the ball over, or missing foul shots.

Not sure what this means but how do we blow out the scrub ACC teams by 15 but lose to the good ones by the same margin? That’s why I feel like the majority of our problems are mental (aka we’re soft)

One thing I notice about the difference between the football and basketball staff is the energy, swagger if you will, they bring. I want to say that Jamie has that Chaney mindset where he isn’t aggressive when competing for kids and uses Twitter never. I’m glad Canada came in and has adapted to Narduzzi’s Social Media Policy. I can only hope that he sends Brandon Knight and company home this off season. Great player and coach, but recruiter and playing with the big boys have not been their forte.

I think part of what is really bothering us is not only the losses but the large margins of defeat. But that’s what happens when you don’t play defense and/or play a slow down game.

If this team doesn’t shoot well then we will lose big because we can neither rebound or defend.

Comment by wbb 02.08.16 @ 4:15 pm

Exactly right wbb, and defense and rebounding require physical and mental toughness, which is lacking in this team. Maybe it is the New York or Philly culture. You have to be tough to play on those playgrounds. Krauser, Wannamaker, Fields were not athletically gifted, but they were brutally tough.

By the way, I presented some data above indicating that UVa plays slogball …. but just in case you don’t believe me, check the link below. UVA is DEAD LAST, 351 out of 351, in Possessions-per-game. If that doesn’t convince you then nothing will

Pitt is 288 which isn’t high for an ‘offensive team’ .. just more evidence that our PG is not suited for the alleged new offensive style

Temple has authorized a $1M feasibility study for building an on-campus stadium

One difference here … Temple owns its entire campus (land and buildings) in a defined area, it does not have private, public, and university land and buildings interspersed like there is in Oakland. That is just another barrier which had not been discussed much, if at all, here

Comment by wbb 02.08.16 @ 5:17 pm

wbb – I know what Temple won’t name the new stadium – Cosby Coliseum (sp)

Comment by Erie Express 02.08.16 @ 5:21 pm

lol – what’s worse, Cosby Coliseum or Sandusky Stadium?

Comment by wbb 02.08.16 @ 5:36 pm

How about Paterno Pedo Field?

Slog ball is excellent when you are good at it.

Comment by gc 02.08.16 @ 5:40 pm

All it means is that Pitt will have to share some of the money or pay off those who have controlling interests in the land or property. A feasibility study would point that out. So Pitt’s cost to construct an OCS might be higher than most schools.

Again, why are schools going down the path of OCS? What are Pitt’s plans when the Steelers build their 80k domed stadium in Washington County and get their Super Bowl in 2030?

Urban schools like Pitt have a strategic plan to acquire properties, cheaply. They start by creating affiliated entities or partnerships with other entities whose sole purpose is to systematically purchase land before the consumer knows what happened.

I have seen them buy properties surrounding gangs and then squeeze the gangs out. It only takes a vision and determination that you can do something, instead of a bunch of old school administrators that do things the way they have always been done so that they can preserve their jobs. Old school will keep you looking in from the outside.

You have to be able to see your house from the porch!

Good stuff by Barnes. Not a fan of moving the Spring game back to Heinz unless you are ok with 60k yellow seats
