Open Thread: VT-Pitt

ESPNU at 6:30.

Sorry, I’ve had to work insane hours this weekend, and today is no different. DVR delay for me tonight.

Pitt has come out staggering in the last 5 games. That has been killing them. They just aren’t good enough to get buried like that.

The problem — as much as it is the poor defense — is that they have come out so badly on offense. Like it or not, this is an offense first team. Not simply that they have to score a ton to win (and they do), but you can see what it does to their defensive effort when they aren’t scoring. Their frustration on offense causes more and more mistakes and carelessness on the defensive end.

That was the thing in that Clemson game. They started well enough, but as the offense went south the defense somehow managed to become more inept.

The blame on the offense is widespread (except, for Mike Young). James Robinson has reverted back to 2014-15 shooting. None of the other guards have exactly shown any consistency. In the Clemson game, the guard positions combined for 2-17 shooting.

Even Jamel Artis has been bad — especially in the first half. With the exception of the BC game, he has struggled mightily. Over the past 2 weeks — 4 games (again, not including the really bad BC team) — he has shot 18-49 (4-19 on 3s). From what I’ve seen, Artis has stopped attacking the rim and settling for jumpers more and more.

VT can score the ball. Buzz Williams has been one of those coaches who has handled Pitt over the years at Marquette and now VT.

I am assuming that this will be a much tougher game than wanted, and anticipated before the season started.

Jeter starting is a great move and is probably a bit overdue. If he’s a energy guy coming off the bench then it makes sense to start him since sluggish first halves have killed us lately. Also he made a great point that he gets “cold” sitting after warm-ups, and I’d argue that’s more a mental thing, he seems to be the teams most emotional player (he’s all about fist pumps when he makes shots/blocks and fist clenches when he misses shots), so letting him get started early is a good thing. I understand Jamie’s rationale in wanting to start/play the grad transfers centers but they might be better coming off the bench to spell Jeter and soaking up fouls.

I know some get really mad when we talk about future seasons (which happens routinely in FB threads BTW) but I’m excited for the future of the backcourt with Wilson and CJ. That’s going to be a lethal combo in 2-3 years (maybe even next!). Luther needs to see his minutes climb too, I really like his game. He’s going to be a key cog on future teams.

The UVA game seems so far away. I think it’s our best shot at a top-tier win. We’re due to beat the Cavs, we’re at home, and they’re a tad bit over ranked (I’ve personally watched them rally for two W’s that should have been L’s). Right now the ACC looks like it has 3 tiers: UNC, top and bottom. If we can stay mired in the “top” we’re in OK shape.

Jeter is the fourth leading scorer at 8.6 ppg, but he only averages 18 minutes per game. A full 10 minutes less than the big three. Makes absolutely no sense to me.

Comment by gc 02.01.16 @ 2:01 pm

tallahassee, that could be a problem. BTW, what difference does it make if a recruit lived 800 miles away? IMO, that would be reason for not taking the truck.

Comment by wbb 02.01.16 @ 2:17 pm

The announcers during the Pitt-Clemson game mentioned that Clemson ran a full team scrimmage with refs since they had a week off going in to the Pitt game. Pitt might want to do the same with 6 days off until UVa.

Comment by Nick 02.01.16 @ 2:18 pm

Tallahassee – the ND equipment truck came here to Savannah Christian high school to recruit Fl / DB top recruit Demetrius Robertson. Parked at his house Thursday, and all day at the school. Savannah Morning News (Savannahnow.com/sports/notredame) referred to NCAA Bylaw 13.4.3.5, which evidently prohibits the “publicising the recruitment of a student athlete thru recruiting aids such as advertising, bumper stickers, message buttons”, etc. Side of truck has huge letters Notre Dame, football mural, and “Wake up the echoes” along the whole side of the truck! Look up Friday’s issue for the pic!

Hate the domers, and I hope they get fried for this – but the truck IS impressive!

I heard Bradley having surgery and will miss spring practice. I wonder if there are other guys having work done on knees, shoulders etc.

Comment by gc 02.01.16 @ 2:51 pm

I agree with everything Zeise said in his ‘news & notes’, as far as why we need to stick with Jeter and the makeup of our team. Jeter has been inconsistent at times, but maybe starting him and giving him some slack will help his confidence a lot, and hopefully last night was a sign of good things to come. I enjoy watching him play.

On the other hand, I don’t blame Jamie for being slow to go with this new lineup. Every coach wants a Center in their starting lineup in order to deal with certain conference match-ups. We’ve tried Maia & Ododa in varying combinations, and both have had and will continue to have their moments, but neither is quite a starting ACC Center.

Mike Young would benefit from playing beside a Center, so that’s unfortunate that he doesn’t get the opportunity this year. So we just go with our 5 best guys, trying to offset size the best we can…

Comment by 1618mt 02.01.16 @ 3:03 pm

1618mt – Zeis’ reporting this year has been spot on. Very level headed and on point. After reading comments hear it’s nice to get a non-biased POV.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 02.01.16 @ 3:14 pm

so basically, our BB is the same as last year with Smith replacing Wright (or whoever played the 2 – can’t remember) … except the returnees are year older and better.

Comment by wbb 02.01.16 @ 3:20 pm

TT and 1618mt – agreed that Zeise has good feel for what this team is. I don’t drink the koolaid and I don’t drink the disaster moonshine but this team is fun to watch when they are on.

Comment by AnotherClancyrebound 02.01.16 @ 3:22 pm

wbb, that is probably true, although Maia and Ododa, a little more reliable than the last two centers. Wright probably better defensively when he was healthy which wasn’t often. Newkirk has not been missed at all, with Johnson and Wilson adding a few good minutes. Johnson for the shooting, and Wilson for the ball handling, both with better passing.

But like you say the improvement is with the big three and Jeter, who are all more mature and improved.

Comment by gc 02.01.16 @ 3:36 pm

Sounds like we are losing Pine, Vuk asked where are you going and he said “Surprise”

Comment by gc 02.01.16 @ 3:46 pm

Dokish tweeted “I think it is going to be a nice day for Pitt Fans” so we got that going for us, lol

Comment by gc 02.01.16 @ 3:50 pm

Do we wonder why so many of the guys who make it to the NFL are such prima donnas? What a circus this whole recruiting process has become.

GC – because he is a kid?

Pitt 1972 – Hamlin is announcing live tonight on KDKA – 6pm news

Comment by winedogs 02.01.16 @ 4:29 pm

gc, the drama is all about all these yoyo’s harassing(emails, cell phone calls tweets) the hell out of these kids on their commitments. Do these kids actually go to school the entire last few weeks before they sign their papers to commit?—Anyone ever think about just how much studying for tests all these sought after recruits get in their last academic year? 🙂

Comment by jrnpitt 02.01.16 @ 4:31 pm

JoeKnew: Cook is right on. That’s why this team is not i the top 25 and the arena is never sold out.

Pitt’s non-con schedule strength is 192. This is a liability Dixon creates every year just so he can get his 20 win bonus. It’s pathetic.

Comment by Tony77019 02.01.16 @ 4:35 pm

Chase Pine
Pantherlair podcast stated that Pine talked with Harley last night and reaffirmed commitment and was to talk with Duzz today. So he seems good now.

Would just be awesome to flip 2 Ped State recruits…

Oh, vuk stating Sanders mother not letting Pitt coaches to talk him… Mama Lock Down.

It is ridiculous, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy following along this crap in Jan and Feb..

Comment by Dan 02.01.16 @ 5:19 pm

The system stinks like shit, I give you that.

However, until the powers that be change the rules, I’m glad we have relentess lions and tigers and bears chasing down the best recruits till the bitter end.

Take the high road?? That’s how you get crap recruiting classes.

Take the high road?? That’s how PSU, WVU, Ohio State and Notre Dame eat you for dinner.

You want to win, you can’t take the high road.

You have to be relentless.

Nauseating?? Absolutely.

Change the rules then. Until that happens, go get em’ Nard Dog!!!

Comment by Dan 02.01.16 @ 5:23 pm

Maybe Mathews was the Pat signal…

Comment by Jackagain 02.01.16 @ 5:35 pm

The Sanders thing kind of reminds of the Foster thing where I think he picked AL but mom wanted Pitt. Who knows with kids.

Don’t worry Erie, in a year or 2 parents will be blocking other coaches from talking to Pitt commits when they finally figure out what’s really happening here.

Welcome to the Pitt family Mr. Hamlin and Mr. Mathews. Two positions of need and we’re glad you chose to stay and play for your home town team.

“Damar Hamlin, a 6-1, 175-pound cornerback from Pittsburgh picking between Pitt, Ohio State, Penn State and ND: “The loosest hips and the best feet of any cornerback I’ve ever seen,” one longtime defensive coach in a Power 5 conference said. “He’s 6-1. He’s long. He’s physical and he’s fast. He’ll be a first-round corner.”
