Open Thread: Pitt-FSU

Time to see how the team really responds to a bad home loss. They said the right things about needing to get out and play from the opening tip. To playing better defense. There’s more than just hints about changing things in the backcourt.

Not sure how much of the last part will actually be seen today. Pitt plays a FSU team that needs to lean more on its backcourt. Damon Wilson has shown much promise, but he is also prone to committing a lot of fouls in short bursts of time.

By all rights, Pitt should be fired up for this game. They should be angry. They should be ready to try and show people that they are a more complete team that doesn’t struggle to compete when the offense isn’t there right away.

This is a 4pm game. It’s on the ACC syndicated network. Wide distribution for most markets, it seems. It just sucks for me (and anyone else in the Cleveland area). Looks like I will be watching via ESPN3.

Not worried about Wilson, he knows this will be his team next year. He will get all the off season reps and will be ready. Great to see Smith have a big game, really kept us in it in the first half.

Anybody notice that Jamie doesn’t listen to that Detroit-sourced assistant coach?

I’m guessing you won’t see him back next year.

Vukovan reporting that Hudson will chose between PSU and Michigan and forego his visit to Pitt next weekend. There was never much indication that we were in the hunt but too bad he won’t visit. He would have topped off a great group of linebackers.

Comment by gc 01.24.16 @ 11:04 am

Also reports that Camp will wait till signing day to announce. Man that would be a blockbuster if he chooses us.

Comment by gc 01.24.16 @ 11:06 am

@Steve1–Sagarin’s computer has dropped us from #20 to #32-a virtual dead heat with #31 ND–not nearly as bad a drop as Pomeroy.

It also has the Clemson game essentially a tossup. Ranges from Pitt +1 (#32 team overall) or + 2 (#27 predictor team) to a -2 or -3 (#37 team in recent performance rating).

Biggest problem against ACC competition is the lack of a quality center. We are living and dying by the jump shot and aren’t a sufficient threat to score down low inside.

gc – Do you think Hudson saw that Reynolds committed last night and ditched us?

If we miss on Hamlin, Watts and Camp it will feel like a “wet blanket” finish.

But, overall, if we get no one else, good class.

Comment by Erie Express 01.24.16 @ 11:31 am

The heavy pursuit of Reynolds and subsequent commitment last night, suggests that we may have been targeting Hudson as a LB and as soon as Hudson saw another LB commit, chose to cancel his visit next week. Probably a response to the verbal and if he was going to be a SS, we have one of those for the next couple of years, barring injury. The numbers are interesting. I am not as sold on Reynolds because we got a few straight ahead LB’s in the system already. I see him as a special teams ace however.

The last 4 star LB that went to MIchigan from the WPIAL is Winowich. He doesn’t play LB any more. The last 4 star OL that went to Michigan, Kugler, is a back-up. Another example of kids going to storied programs and not seeing the field because of the other 4 and 5 star competition. Wishing him well as I did Foster and Delvon Simmons. There are many more examples, but those recent ones come to mind. Michigan touting a WPIAL connection with Breaston and Dunaway, but that goes back many years.

agree pitt1972, and Young has been trying to force too many. Only way to score inside is with good interior passing. Hope Jeter is back on Wednesday.

Comment by gc 01.24.16 @ 11:35 am

I believe OSU offered Camp last night since they lost out on another DT. We would be better off if all the top uncommitted players waited until last day to commit. That way it is harder to poach someone else’s prospects. We’re not strong enough yet to go head to head with all the big boys all the time.

pmdH2P — must be something wrong with Vukovan’s server; I can’t get the site either.

Comment by PetePitt73 01.24.16 @ 11:44 am

He said last night on Twitter that he is working on getting out of his current server arrangement to go with a different group. Hopes to have it done soon.

Agree with the thinking that kids want to go to the big schools and then realize that they have to compete with 5 or 6 kids who are equal or better than them. Pitt always seems to develop a real NFL star because they got to play right away and develop. Kids need to really analyze the school they are going to attend including academics. HCPN has shown his analytical FB skills through his appearances on ESPN, etc.

Pitt2Cali or Justin, can you DVR what you watch with Apple TV?
Same question for anyone else who has Roku or Amazon FireStick.
THanks

Comment by TVax 01.24.16 @ 12:33 pm

TVax, you have to have access to WatchESPN thru your cable provider and, if so, the game will be available to rewind for at least a week.

Otherwise no go.

Comment by steve1 01.24.16 @ 12:41 pm

And, as far as I know, DVR-ing is only possible with ones cable channels, if you have DVR capability.

Pat Kugler was a redshirt freshman; played behind Michigan’s top offensive lineman who will be on an NFL roster next season

Kugler will probably start next season at Michigan

Comment by NotTimGrgurich 01.24.16 @ 1:07 pm

Hudson was never considered a Pitt lean but a long shot, which is his choice. We will never be able to get 100% of the locals. We didn’t get everyone back in late 70s either.

If we can finish with Hamlin and Watts, it will be a pretty darn good class ..anyone else is icing.

Comment by wbb 01.24.16 @ 1:46 pm

Is it’s the Trib’s MO too use the lowest rating when writing about PITT commits? Reynolds is rated 3 stars by the other sites.
Comment by Pittastic 01.24.16 @ 9:34 am

I was thinking the same thing when I read that article in the Trib.

Comment by Jackagain 01.24.16 @ 2:06 pm

Kugler wouldn’t have started for Pitt. He may have competed at center, but he was not a early big time recruit. He needed to get stronger and bigger for over three years. Rotheram and DJ and now Officer start over him. Hudson is a really good safety, but not sure he is a top of the line line backer needing to add 20 to 30 pounds. That changes the dynamic.

Comment by Chethejet 01.24.16 @ 2:13 pm

DHufF, These kids often believe they’re way better than they actually are, despite the realities they’ll face in a top program. They have no concept of how talented their competition will be. They don’t really think they’ll be on bench for 2 or 3 years. Kugler and Foster are two examples of that. The opportunity to come in an play right away should be an important part of their decision. It’s a matter of opportunity. If you don’t get the playing time, you may never develop to your full potential. Pitt certainly has put a lot of good players in the NFL. Darrell Revis, Larry Fitzgerald, Shady McCoy, Aaron Donald didn’t seem to have any problems moving on to the next level. They had talent and they played early in their Pitt careers.

Comment by Justinian 01.24.16 @ 2:27 pm

Kugler would have started at Pitt ; Rowell is not close to the level of Kugler

but just an opinion – let’s check back after next season

Comment by NotTimGrgurich 01.24.16 @ 2:47 pm

Josh Lugg a JR OL from NA committed to ND this year. We’ll see how he progresses

Comment by wbb 01.24.16 @ 3:36 pm

@ TVax, even though you didn’t ask me, here is something to consider. Apple TV should be just another video/audio feed. If this is the case, then depending on if you have an independent DVR unit, (not a proprietary cable or satellite DVR), then you should be able to set up your hardware via HDMI cables, component cables, etc. in the following sequence in order to both view Apple TV on your TV while permitting you to record such video from the Apple TV box by commanding the independent DVR to record the incoming video feed from the Apple box.
The set up: Apple TV box HDMI cable to “input” of the DVR, HDMI cable from output of the DVR to your desired HDMI input on your TV.
I’m no techie wiz but this seems like it should work with a modern DVR & smart TV.

Lugg is not near the player Kugler was

Kugler had a large number of offers from top Div1 schools after his sophomore season – due to his play as a starter on a state championship team

as a senior – Kugler was a top rated center (top 3 on almost every list)

Lugg had offers after his sophomore season – primarily due to his size (and potential – because he never took a snap with the varsity)

Comment by NotTimGrgurich 01.24.16 @ 5:45 pm

All you JR haters will miss him next year. He holds the best A/T ratio in the”History ” yes “History” of the Intire NCAA. U can’t have that stat and not be a baller. So miss him next year, you talk about “turnover” city!!! Wilson, I do wish him luck but he’s got a long long way to go. So continue to talk about JR, and realize that without him Pitt would be a lot worse !!!
