A true buy-a-win game to finish the non-con.

4pm

ESPN3.

Not much to say about this one in advance, other than it won’t help in the RPI (if you are actually worried about such a thing at this point).

Other than the obvious win, I’m hoping that Jamel Artis, Mike Young and James Robinson play under 25 minutes each.

Trivia: who has the longest run from scrimmage by a QB in NFL history .. and who was it against?

Comment by wbb 01.03.16 @ 2:36 pm

wbb with all do respect a draft pick like Shazier has Tomlin written all over it and Ben loved Bruce if Tomlin wanted him he would have kept him

Comment by Steve h 01.03.16 @ 2:42 pm

what’s wrong with Shazier (except he gets hurt a lot)? He’s a definite 1st round talent

Comment by wbb 01.03.16 @ 2:46 pm

Andy Lee still can punt

Comment by wbb 01.03.16 @ 2:50 pm

pryor/pgh. any thoughts on kevin john from IU as next OC? qualified! not a complete spread offense @ IU. PDuzzi not exactly a 3 yards and a cloud of dust coach. might be a nice combination imho.

Comment by DC33 01.03.16 @ 3:00 pm

Correct. Hard to say what PN has in store. He already said that he would take his time and may not hire one until mid-Jan. But I would expect he would hire one with good experience.

Comment by wbb 01.03.16 @ 3:14 pm

I do agree Tomlin is a total Ahole for going for 2 pts there

Comment by wbb 01.03.16 @ 3:40 pm

Patriots limp into the playoffs.

Jets almost have a miracle, whew

Comment by gc 01.03.16 @ 4:06 pm

Game over Steelers are in. Too bad they aren’t much of a playoff team though.

Comment by gc 01.03.16 @ 4:07 pm

Mark Malone, Cleveland?

Comment by gc 01.03.16 @ 4:11 pm

Sorry , that was a catch, can’t remember a run, maybe Kordell.

Comment by gc 01.03.16 @ 4:12 pm

Why so long on the OC hire? Aren’t any candidates pretty much known entities and earlier decision better for getting recruits to commit?

Comment by PittPT 01.03.16 @ 4:14 pm

Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s 93-yard touchdown run against the Pittsburgh Steelers was the longest touchdown run by a QB in NFL history.Oct 27, 2013

Reports are that Brown’s OC is a candidate for the Panther’s OC now that their season is over. He is 37 years old and from youngstown

Comment by DionJag 01.03.16 @ 4:18 pm

The take away from the report of John DeFlippo being a candidate is that Pitt is obvious willing to spend some money for the OC position if they are willing to go after a pro OC. My guess is the move is dependent on whether Pettine is fired (almost a certainty) and if DeFlippo’s agent thinks he can get another pro OC position for his client.

Comment by DionJag 01.03.16 @ 5:06 pm

Dion – Hard seeing a NFL OC taking a college role especially since he worked hard getting to the NFL. Hope he has a wife tired of moving.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.03.16 @ 5:08 pm

DeFillipo has a lot of QB experience. Was OC/QB coach at San Jose St. Youngstown native.

I like this idea better than Locksley from Maryland. Not wowed by either guy really…

Comment by Pap76 01.03.16 @ 5:10 pm

If your’e getting a NFL guy, Duzz has to really verify two things: 1-does he love to recruit and 2 – does he really want to get back to the college grind or is he just waiting for another NFL gig?

Comment by htp123 01.03.16 @ 5:22 pm

“Coach Narduzzi is an honest guy, He’ll tell you what don’t want to hear”

Comment by wbb 01.03.16 @ 5:39 pm

There are very few ex-NFL guys that go a college coach position (Wanny?) that are not waiting for another pro position unless he thinks a successful college gig is a road to a HC position. Remember being a reformer Brown’s coach is not in high demand in the pro’s.

Comment by DionJag 01.03.16 @ 6:07 pm

well, lets go already, if the offense is going to change again, the more time spent the better.

Comment by goalie44 01.03.16 @ 6:23 pm

I prefer a college guy for the OC. For coaching and recruiting.

Comment by Bj 01.03.16 @ 6:32 pm

Note that Scottie Montgomery was the Steelers WR coach and then went to Duke as the OC. Now HC at East Carolina. So moving from the NFL to CFB sometimes can get you to the HC position a lot easier than going the NFL route if that is your long term goal. Personally I like the OC Johns at Indiana if he could be persuaded to leave

Comment by FoolOfPitt 01.03.16 @ 7:36 pm

Canada the OC fired from North Carolina state
Johns, current OC of IU
Brad Salem, assistant at MSU

3 names that have been speculated about that seem interesting… gotta think Duzz goes with someone he knows or feels he really got a great read on them after Chaney pulled his crap at Pitt this year.

Comment by Pittscript 01.03.16 @ 8:30 pm

DeFillipo characterized as pass oriented OC when hired by Browns last year…. spent most of his time in NFL… this guy wants to be there…

Duzz looking for someone who will stay for awhile…

Comment by Pittscript 01.03.16 @ 8:32 pm

@pittscript,

where was the johns speculation coming from, did he indicate an interest?

Comment by goalie44 01.03.16 @ 9:17 pm

I’d expect a hire by the time the recruiting dead period ends in a week and a half, or so, in order to clamp down those last couple/few recruits before NLI day.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Digdug 01.03.16 @ 9:52 pm

I’m hoping the last few recruits are from the D side, like DT, MLB and DB.

Comment by Erie Express 01.03.16 @ 9:59 pm

U if Miami OC was really good. Call him.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.03.16 @ 10:16 pm

Nevermind Richt is keeping him.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.03.16 @ 10:21 pm

I like that idea, the Miami OC might bring along some nice FL recruits too. Also what is the story on Beamer’s OC?

Comment by PittPT 01.03.16 @ 10:28 pm

If Richt is keeping Miami’s OC and Chaney is going to GeorGia then The OC under Richt may be available. Anyone know anything about him?

Comment by PittPT 01.03.16 @ 10:32 pm

PittPT – the former OC at Georgia under Richt is going to South Carolina to take the same position (I believe I read that).

I’ve been trying to connect the dots as well to see who might be available.

I think last year’s hire was the important OC to continue the success handed to HCPN by Chryst’s O. This next OC has to clean up Chaney’s mess (without T.Boyd).

Comment by Erie Express 01.04.16 @ 4:57 am

Chaney’s best contribution to Pitt going forward may well end up being getting MacVittie to sign on the dotted line as a Pitt recruit. At least that’s what I’m hoping for.

Comment by jrnpitt 01.04.16 @ 5:40 am

I said it before but I”m still shocked that Chaney got the gig at Georgia.

Comment by PittPT 01.04.16 @ 5:41 am

PittPT, I checked … Georgia dominated Arkansas in 2014 45-32. But more telling was that the halftime of 38-6. Sound familiar?

Just like Pitt losses this year, Arkansas only scored 6 at halftime, and then a lot of points after the game was decided.

So, I don’t know what Richt sees in Chaney either … but their gain (loss) is our loss (gain)

Comment by wbb 01.04.16 @ 7:39 am

Hey, I’m on my first coffee so forget my post immediately above.

Kirby Smart was DC at Bama so maybe he was impressed with Chaney’s offense … yet, in 2014, Bama beat Arkansas 14-13. The Hogs gained 227 total yards, not a lot, but Bama does play great defense.

Thus, I don’t really see what Smart sees in Chaney either.

Comment by wbb 01.04.16 @ 7:44 am

Of course, the PR machine at Georgia (like all schools) will say that Chaney’s offense was instrumental in Pitt getting to the 8 win plateau despite the loss of James Conner …. just like Matt House’s bio will forever list that Aaron Donald won every defensive award imaginable in House’s 1st year as DC at Pitt

Comment by wbb 01.04.16 @ 7:48 am

Chris Dokish ?@ChrisDokish (8 hours ago)
It’s funny that the old Pitt administration wouldn’t give Teryl Austin the time of day, but NFL teams are interviewing him for HC.
——————————————-

And yet, Smug Steve didn’t even consider Austin after he fired DW … and hired Mike Heyward instead. After that, he did give him a courtesy interview but had his heart set on hiring an offensive coach.

Comment by wbb 01.04.16 @ 7:58 am

Just to prove that I don’t consistently bash Upitt, I completely agree with his suggestion to interview Miami’s previous OC James Coley for Pitt’s OC position. The guy is a young successful up & comer. He has deep roots in Florida both as a player & a coach. He would be a good recruiter for Pitt in the Sunshine State.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.04.16 @ 8:14 am

Chaney is given a lot of credit based on the past and who he knows. Bottom line is he is a sub par college OC and he will be exposed after this stint at Georgia. We will definitely e better off without him. Looks like HCPN is taking his time with this hire so I think that shows he understands this is an extremely important hire.

Comment by shawn 01.04.16 @ 8:19 am

I think it’s crazy how quiet or secretive this OC has been though. No one seems to have anything on who Narduzzi is looking at.

Comment by shawn 01.04.16 @ 8:23 am

I realize that Coley is being kept on by Richt. But I’d still try to hire him!

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.04.16 @ 8:29 am

I think Narduzzi hired Chaney b/c he was an experienced OC and Chaney wanted out of Arkansas. Nard wanted to have an OC in place that was very experienced. Time will tell if the new OC is an improvement.

Chaney was also QB coach and I think part of NP regressing for the bowl game was due to Chaney leaving. Would like to see Nardo hire a QB coach as well as a new OC.

Comment by Grizzly1 01.04.16 @ 8:31 am

Note that all of the possible names listed above came for outside of the Pitt camp …. thus, it may be someone that we never heard of.
Don’t be disappointed if the new hire is someone we never heard of … that would be unfair.

FWIW, I guess I would actually be disappointed if Brad Salem was hired … only because it would remind me of the in-breeding hiring policy of his predecessor, although he may turn out to be a really good choice.

Comment by wbb 01.04.16 @ 9:10 am

I am presently surprised there is no mention of Cavanaugh and other Pitt alumni. The Blather is slowly breaking from the past, lol. Thank God.

Comment by notrocketscience 01.04.16 @ 11:59 am

pleasantly surprised

Comment by notrocketscience 01.04.16 @ 12:00 pm

@goilie44 the Names I put up are ones being reported on/speculated on by media and articles on twitter.

Only thing I have see as a serious lead … and it’s slim is the DeFillipo noise coming out of Cleveland.

Comment by Pittscript 01.04.16 @ 1:31 pm

Not rocket – you are doubly surprised!

I bet you want Mike Norvell back…;)
