Open Thread: Kent St.-Pitt

4 pm ESPN3.com

So, yeah. Yesterday could have been better. In theory, I should have been spending the day on the couch watching other fanbases suffer. Nope, wife made me do a bunch of errands and things with the family. Just getting home in time for the game.

Or at least pretending to move on to a basketball game.

If it was too short an appearance for you, Pitt is wearing the camo unis they wore for the game that never happened to start the season that never happened.

Hopefully the team isn’t looking past this game to the meeting with Purdue on Tuesday.

Wish I could do more of a preview, instead of this slapdash post, but I have barely been able to sit down since about 8 this morning.

I thought of that too, but I didn’t want to see them slip into the playoffs if there is an upset in the conference championships. nd gets an ACC bowl unless they get in playoff or don’t qualify.

Comment by Nick 11.28.15 @ 11:24 pm

The reason for smaller schools upsetting power5 schools in hoops is that the smaller schools understand and execute the fundamentals. Power5 schools like to shoot the 3 and if they are having a bad day, they lose. This is why Pitt doesn’t get upset against smaller schools.

Nicholson and Cox had great days for MSU. Cox had a scoop 6 and long return.

Need to hire sec ref crew to do clemson/unc game to make sure clemson gets in. Believe me, the sec will put their best pro alabama refs on the game to be certain bama gets into the big money dance.

I said this on the other link, but I really think espn osu pushers like herbstreit, galloway and robert smith will be asking whether osu or okl is the best team out there and should take the 4th position.

Committee will have a difficult decision to either keep out big12 again or let 2 big10 teams in. OSU had an easier schedule, but has the $$ and they are defending champs. Same one loss record although the okl schedule was much more difficult.

Penn st. sucks! Troy Apke now playing cb and seeing time at the Dairy college. Barclay will be starting for two more years. Sanders needs to flip now so he can get reps next year and be turning pro at the same time he would be seeing the field for the first time out east.

@@@@@@

anyone who believes Werner does a good job covering Pitt
FB does not understand sports.

Comment by JR 11.29.15 @ 7:43 am

If Pitt list to MSU like the Pedos did, the sports headline would be something like – “Panthers Mauled by Spartans”.

Instead, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette slides the article to the 2nd page – “Turnovers doom lions”. As if the Pedos ever had a chance.

Bowl predictions show the Pedos getting a west coast bowl, while Pitt in for a 2nd tier bowl – TaxSlayer, Music City or PinStripe.

I’m ready for BB season, I guess. To cold to golf now…

UPitt, DOC & Reed – my wife & I got some good laughs regarding the cold remedies offered last night. Priceless…

Comment by Erie Express 11.29.15 @ 8:00 am

list = lost

Comment by Erie Express 11.29.15 @ 8:28 am

Erie, I agree, it was more than turnovers that doomed PSU. And where was Cook’s hit job on PSU this morning, crickets.

Is Emel on hiatus?

Why does PSU get a homer (Snyder) and we just get a hack (Werner)?

Michigan St. puts up 55 on PSU and Iowa needs a 57 yd field goal to beat us. Not equivalent but in the same area code.

Our loss to Miami is a disaster (not caused by turnovers) their loss was just bad luck, a muffed punt.

Comment by gc 11.29.15 @ 10:09 am

I love ND getting beat even if it hurts our bowl standing. Don’t think they help the ACC, being half a member. Where does UNC stand now? Their SC loss really looks worse now, but tOSU loss to VT last year and won the whole thing. Does UNC get in the playoff if they beat Clemson? They should, but I doubt they would.

Comment by gc 11.29.15 @ 10:16 am

NCAA has a problem – not enough 6 win teams to fill the bowl slots. Looks like losing records will get bowl invites. Tourism and money are only reason. Hope Barnes fights for best. ACC splits evenly.

Pittsburgh papers have more ads than reading material. Sports writers show bias to their alma maters. Ok if you live in a small town but not a cosmopolitan city.

Comment by Frank MD 11.29.15 @ 10:20 am

Funny thing is the Central Pa papers blast PSWho but local rags make excuses. Mico says it’s fair coverage but how is it fair that even on their off week they shared front page with Pitt but they lose and it’s an excuse laden page 2?
How do they justify blasting Pitt for close losses and then saying nothing about an absolute beat down?? Sorry Mico, but if you think your coverage is fair you can’t see the forest for the trees!

Comment by JoeKnew 11.29.15 @ 10:23 am

JR – I don’t think you understand the role of a beat writer and what they’re allowed to report on. Pitt has a lot of control over their content and Pitt football isn’t his only beat. He’s also covering Pitt’s women’s basketball.

There’s a reason both PGH papers release similar stories at the same time on the same player(s) and themes … It’s Pitt releasing content, not good investigative sleuthing.

Zeis got destroyed on here too for his football coverage with a lot less content and now he’s one of Pittsburgh’s biggest sports personalities.

You’ll never get “great” reporting out of beat writers for this reason. There’s a reason news breaks nationally instead of locally in sports. Those “inside sources” you always hear about are generally beat writers who are restricted from printing their news so they leak it nationally.

Werner isn’t the problem. It’s the PG’s job description for Pitt Football Beat Writer that you’re upset with. He just reports what’s he’s told to report … or, you know, working the beat.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.29.15 @ 10:28 am

Rebounding was troublesome yesterday. Odobo and Maia, need to pick up their play. Not really good that Luther is beating them out. Good for him though. Sure to see more zone.

Offense is clicking. Everyone looks better, including Robinson, who has been making shots at a much higher %. Let’s hope the change is permanent. Smith definitely the most valuable transfer so far. Really looks good. Should only get better. Artis with much more of a complete game this year. Jeter and Jones still look to have good and bad days. Still, much more encouraged than last year, when they looked totally out of sync for long stretches of time. Passing is much more fluid and they are hitting open shots so far.

Comment by gc 11.29.15 @ 10:32 am

No mention that there were open seats at WVU yesterday. Holgerson quietly having a good season after a crappy start.

Comment by gc 11.29.15 @ 10:36 am

ACC took 3 out of 4 from the SEC yesterday. Crickets.

Comment by gc 11.29.15 @ 10:38 am

TT, then it comes down to the sports editor, and he clearly has different descriptions for Pitt and Penn State. He hires a stringer and she is little more than a cheerleader, but who decides where the stories go on the sports page?? I mean, how can you put Penn State coverage on 1st page when they don’t even play that week?? And Pitt hoops play and they get bumped? Just saying. Also, DiPola always(or mostly) takes a shot in his first paragraph even if it is a mostly favorable article.

Guess Imam becoming a “envious, jealous, what ta be them” type, but I have been paying very close attention, and if Piitt controls the overall message, the writers flavor to suit their own agendas.

Comment by JoeKnew 11.29.15 @ 10:42 am

OK, just one more and I’m done, Pitt gets “shits the bed ” when we lose by 10 to big time tems on “the national stage”. But somehow the cow school had some bad breaks and were missing their players? I mean ,come on!!
Wow, I may need serious meds if we lose to them next year. LOL

Comment by JoeKnew 11.29.15 @ 10:54 am

We need more Pat Signals.

Comment by gc 11.29.15 @ 11:06 am

Virginia’s Mike London resigns instead of getting fired. Might be some flips there.

Comment by alcofan 11.29.15 @ 11:13 am

Per CBS bowl projections- both VT and Louisville end up in a better bowl than Pitt!!

Comment by markp 11.29.15 @ 11:14 am

If we get lesser bowls than VT or Ville, the system needs to be revised if for no other reason than it poses a recruiting disadvantage.

As for Werner, he strikes me as someone who has never played organized sports and only breaks a sweat while standing in line at the buffet.

Comment by Gas 11.29.15 @ 11:49 am

I hope CBS is wrong. I thought they would get Pinstripe bowl but I don’t want to see that if its 5-7 Minnesota. VT should go to the Military bowl and Pitt should get Georgia in the Belk.

Comment by Steve h 11.29.15 @ 12:01 pm

I knew the Miami game was important. That loss completely changed the narrative of Pitt’s season. It was the opening necessary for the media and bowl committees to cast Pitt back down with the masses. Trust me Pitt will never get a break, they need to make their own way. That’s how it is when you are not one of the big boys or big state monied universities. Same goes for the ACC. Just ask UNC.

Comment by Iron Duke 11.29.15 @ 12:14 pm

Fan Followings is a part of equation as well. I’d guess VT and L’Ville both outtravel us. The Maryland game would be good but Navy is legit.

I bet a cold weather game in LA/AL is on the horizon.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.29.15 @ 12:22 pm

UNC’s situation is no different than OSUs last year yet if they beat Clemson there is almost zero chance they get in the playoff.

Not a novel idea, but I am a big fan of an 8 team playoff. All 5 conference winners get auto bids and 3 wild cards.

Comment by Iron Duke 11.29.15 @ 12:24 pm

UPitt, that’s true, which makes it all the more frustrating for us hard core Pitt fans, tough to make enough noise to get noticed, both literally and figuratively.

Comment by Iron Duke 11.29.15 @ 12:29 pm

JoeKnew – that may be the case. I don’t live in PGH so I don’t follow PSU coverage vs. Pitt’s.

I have a close friend who has been a beat reporter for several college and pro teams on the West Coast. It’s the same thing. Beat writers are glorified extensions of the school/pro team’s PR department and if they get a scoop that should be made public they have to hand it off outside their own paper so the ramifications don’t fall on their employers and get them banned from the media rooms.

I’m just saying Werner does his job fine. We get more content than we ever have before whether via the blog or Twitter. He can only go so far in critical reporting lest Pitt bans the PG from even reporting on the school. His job is to report the news not find it. Sports is entertainment and helps sell papers. Getting banned over a scoop would kill subscriptions and readership regardless of how big the news is.

I liked Zeis more than most too but Werner is better. The best beat writer Pitt has had is Ray Fittipaldo for the hoops team. I”m not surprised they promoted him to the big leagues with the Pirates.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.29.15 @ 12:29 pm

Richt out at Georgia after 15 yrs. Heads are rolling.

Comment by alcofan 11.29.15 @ 12:51 pm

With all these coaching changes and us being stable for once it would be nice to get some flips!

We will never get respect form ACC even if we win it, we will always be Yankees to those crackers!

Comment by JoeKnew 11.29.15 @ 1:00 pm

Fan Insider site has Pitt vs UCLA in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Tx. I’d love to see Pinstripe with Wisky or Military with Navy.

Comment by PittPT 11.29.15 @ 1:10 pm

JoeKnew…re: respect. Truedat. But dont worry about their respect. Let’s get to where we kick their butts every year in FB & BB. That’s enough for me!!

Mark Richt was OC at Fla State before Ga. You don’t suppose……nah!!!

Comment by Savannah Panther 11.29.15 @ 1:21 pm

@ markup & others, the Ville and VT can not displace any ACC 8 win teams in the ACC “tier I” bowls with their lessor records. No worries there. That’s how the system is presently set up.

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.29.15 @ 1:30 pm

I have always been a big fan of Richt’s. He was 145-51 at UGA ; 9-3 this year!!! But the fans demand an SEC Championship /NC. It’s been a while for UGA. It’s nice to have high goals, but…. “What have you done for me lately!!?” Hope we get that successful, but never have that attitude!!

Comment by Savannah Panther 11.29.15 @ 1:35 pm

Looks like VT was wise in hiring Fuente from Memphis with all the coaching spots opening up now. Looks like Georgia is looking now too.

Good thing we snagged Narduzzi when we did. Of course….no, I’m not going to say it….

Comment by Jackagain 11.29.15 @ 1:50 pm

Georgia fans should talk to Nebraska fans about hating coaches who only win 9 games a year.

Comment by Steve h 11.29.15 @ 2:01 pm

Don’t look now but the ACC has 3 teams in the FB Top 10. The media will never admit it but the ACC is WAY better than the Pac10 this year.

Comment by Jackagain 11.29.15 @ 2:03 pm

Don’t say that Steve….Emel will bring up Wannstedt again 😉

It’s not lack of respect that holds Putt out of the better bowl games. It’s us, the fans. This is a hardcore Pitt fan site, how many people here will travel to a bowl game?

Comment by Dcpinpgh 11.29.15 @ 3:58 pm

SY, VA, GA, MD etc. with new coaches so we can clean up on their recruits.

Comment by Frank MD 11.29.15 @ 4:20 pm

@Tony…thanks for sharing…hard to argue the article but I can’t believe they really used picture of a Pitt player for main picture….must of been a WVU or PSU grad who made that selection..
It should be Bama, OSU or Texas where the programs are making barrels of money…With the attendance numbers of Pitt games a scholarship is about the right ‘salary’ for a spot on the Pitt team !

Comment by milobloom 11.29.15 @ 4:20 pm

@Jackagain

I guess even a hot wife couldn’t save him in the end. More times than not, firing a coordinator is just keeping a sinking ship above water a bit longer. Let’s hope that is the case here. This douchebag does however have the #4 ranked 2016 recruiting class according to ESPN.

Hopefully Miles Sanders sees a more stable situation that is on the rise here at home and flips to Pitt.

Comment by Pap76 11.29.15 @ 4:26 pm

Tremendous story on ESPN regarding Rashad Jennings: why he left Pitt. Wonderful young man.

Comment by Gas 11.29.15 @ 5:10 pm

Dcpinpgh, I’m going to any bowl game in the Carolinas, Georgia or Florida, how bout you.

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.29.15 @ 5:12 pm

DCpinpgh, I can’t fault anybody for not traveling to a meaningless bowl game. The cost in money, time, etc., particularly after the holidays, is simply prohibitive. Short of a playoff/national championship game, I don’t know how anybody without completely expendable income (and time) justifies it.

Comment by Carmen 11.30.15 @ 9:37 am

The Gonzaga (non) game aside, I don’t understand how Pitt BB can be getting votes in both polls (#34 AP, #37 Coaches) this week. Yes, they do appear to be able to score, but they have not played against a good defense yet. And against mediocre offenses in Detroit and Kent, Pitt did not show a consistent ability to get stops.

And they were out-hustled and out-rebounded by Kent.

I am afraid of what will happen when Swanigan (6’9″ 250#), Haas (7’2″ 282#), Hammons (7′ 250#) and Taylor (6’10” 240#) come to the Pete on Tuesday. We should not forget Edwards (6’8″ 225#) as a wing. And I did not mention Purdue’s gaurds……

Comment by xfmrman 11.30.15 @ 3:10 pm

xfmrman,

The voters must be taking into account the non-game against Gonzaga.

Although Pitt has weaknesses that you cite, it also has strengths — shooting, passing, length at every position except center.

Comment by Howard 11.30.15 @ 7:18 pm

According to Dokish on twitter, the odds on this game are even. This is a lot like the Gonzaga game. Even Pitt fans thought that Gonzaga would do better than Pitt, but the odds only had Gonzaga up by a few points.

Most of the fans in the country think that Purdue is much better than Pitt — because of Purdue’s size and Pitt’s weak game against Kent State — but place your bets on Pitt!

I’m predicting that ANO will come up big! His reach makes him bigger than 6’9. He can play with these guys and he will block their shots. Young will be hard to stop. Big guys dream about going up against 7 footers.

This is the kind of team that we can beat. We will contest the shots of their three-point shooting guards. We’ve got some three-point shooters of our own. The Kent State game was tough on the centers because they were thinking about Purdue. They will be fully concentrated when they play tonight. Game starts at 9pm.

Comment by Howard 12.01.15 @ 12:34 pm

Howard,

Although I am tempering my optimism, I do hope that you are right.

I will be at the game cheering for the Home Team.

Comment by xfmrman 12.01.15 @ 1:01 pm

And if they happen to win, I will not question votes in the polls!
