FOOTBALL MEDIA REPORT: Nov 19th

Here is this morning’s media recap for the day:

Post-Gazette:

Freshman Ollison at “The Wall“.

Pitt sees upside in Southside renovations:

“Specifically, Barnes pointed to the hydrotherapy area, used by both teams, as being a part of the expansion. He also added that a common lobby space, as opposed to the current setup of two separate entrances, will make things more comfortable for the Pitt football players, who often eat their meals at the Steelers’ cafeteria.

“Just the little nuance of how our student-athletes won’t have to go outside to get into the cafeteria (Heaven forbid),” Barnes said. “They get to stay inside in the wintertime. Those are things we’ve been communicating and planning together here over the last couple of months plus.”

Trib Review:

Jordan Whitehead laid down on his dorm room bed. As he turned his face to the industrial-blue painted wall he moaned, his stomach roiling and his bones aching because he  wanted to do so much more for his fellow football team Panthers. The problem was that no one else knew exactly how confused and invalidated Whitehead felt until the astute Trib-Review sports writer actually asked him. Then Whitehead was happy again.”

PITT finds a quarterback with swagger

Moments that define Pitt’s season stretch from cold January days in the indoor practice facility on the South Side all the way to Durham, N.C., last Saturday when players answered their coach’s challenge.

Along the way, Pitt found a quarterback with a swagger, a way to carry on without its best player and an attitude that was strikingly different than what the players knew.  (Denzel Washington or Al Pacino – your choice)

“They challenged us from the beginning,” said wide receiver Dontez Ford of the coaches who conducted pre-dawn workouts less than a month after they were hired.

Coach Petrino finds footing with Louisville… after slipping on the proverbial banana peel in Arkansas.

ew, ew…Pitt PSU at Yankee Stadium?

Comment by steve1 11.19.15 @ 1:55 pm

Drats…PSU played in it last year and likely wouldn’t happen 2 years in a row.

But howsabout Michigan?

Comment by steve1 11.19.15 @ 1:58 pm

Hoping for Pitt vs WVU in the Russell Athletic Bowl since I’ll be in Florida for the holidays, but PSU in NYC would be nice too!

Comment by John 11.19.15 @ 1:59 pm

Great to see Caprara get ACC linebacker of the week. One of the Woodland Hills crew. Overcome his so-called lack of size and speed. A little surprised he was able to beat out Bradley, so got to give him a lot of credit.

Comment by gc 11.19.15 @ 2:01 pm

not sure if anyone posted this yet since it was written 11/15 but think many here will like it

Comment by wbb 11.19.15 @ 2:08 pm

I apologize .. Reed already posted it back on Sunday as I was returning from NC

Never mind!

Comment by wbb 11.19.15 @ 2:15 pm

wbb – good read. I read a similar story on ESPN. One thing I didn’t know that I gleamed from both articles was that the Mustard was not our official gold. Interesting.

Having said that, I liked the last paragraph best …

“The team’s football uniforms are still navy blue and gold. But Barnes said the athletic department would do a thorough study on using what he called “accent colors,” which may include the royal blue and mustard yellow conjured up by John Majors some 42 years ago. Then the comeback will truly be complete.”

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.19.15 @ 2:17 pm

Yea Tossing .. that’s the main reason I thought many here would like the article

Comment by wbb 11.19.15 @ 2:25 pm

Please play a bowl game anywhere warm! I’ll be there with many friends.

If we play Penn State anywhere…( even Mars) I’ll be there.

But warmth + Penn State would be perfect!

Franklin stein would crap himself if he had to play Pitt with his joke of a team.

Comment by Dan 72 11.19.15 @ 2:27 pm

Mustard is something you put on hot dogs not on uniforms. The color is old Gold.

Comment by Yeti 11.19.15 @ 2:28 pm

Pitt uniforms changed a few times over the years. Go with the uniforms from the most successful modern era Royal Blue and Mustard. Be unique.
The 60’s unis were indeed boring.

Mentioned how PSU and Temple want hundreds of millions for new stadiums and improvements but forgot the link.
link to triblive.com
Think it cant happen? Comcast, yes those gougers, got over $300 million to build a new Philly HQ when Rendell was governor (he owns bocu shares in another’s name). Corrupt legislators from one end of the state to another go to PSU games and sit in the Preident’s and other boxes. Both parties. Back when Emel and I were in Pol Sci Pa was the third most corrupt state in the country, it still ranks there. Dont let them do it CPG – OCS should not be dead if money is in play for the Pedipile hiders and Temples. Later
Hail To Pitt

Comment by rkb 11.19.15 @ 2:34 pm

Hypothetical Question:
IF NARD DOG DID WITH WHITEHEAD WHAT JOHNNY MAJORS DID WITH DORSETT (move him to tailback and give him the ball 30 times a game) WOULD JORDAN WHITEHEAD BE AS SUCCESSFUL AS TONY DORSETT WAS HIS FRESHMAN YEAR???
What do you think?
– I think it would be quite possible.

Comment by pittman4ever 11.19.15 @ 2:48 pm

Great problem to have:

Who is the odd man out next year?

Jones-Smith
Bisno
Johnson
Officer
O’Neill
Bookser

Back-ups

Reese
Guy
Roberts
Herndon
Baker
Grimm

Only O’Neill is under 300 at 290. Probably be at 300-310 next year.

Yes we will have depth. Maybe use O’Neill as a tight End on running plays.

How about running behind those guys Miles Sanders?

Comment by gc 11.19.15 @ 2:51 pm

Lou and Mia games very important. We currently on track for ACC tier one bowl games. Losing to either of the last two game teams could put us out of tier one or bring up some politics.

Comment by Frank MD 11.19.15 @ 2:58 pm

Pittman, back then running backs were the premier guys, now corner backs and safeties are more important. The game has changed. You don’t see great running backs running end sweeps anymore because the linebackers and safeties are too good.

Comment by gc 11.19.15 @ 3:00 pm

pitman4ever, so Corbett, who was (and maybe still is) a PSU board member approved funding for the stadium improvements, and the current governor is mow being pressured to honor it??

The PA state govt is so freakin’ biased towards the central and eastern part of the state, it’s pathetic. I propose that Western PA secedes and becomes it own state!

Comment by wbb 11.19.15 @ 3:00 pm

I guess the above post should have been directed to rkb

It would be amazing if Temple gets state funds to build a stadium ,, as well as PSU (who only gets about 100k revenue per yr from FB) .. and Pitt gets nothing. And the guy who was behind it all was a former (and possible current) PSU board member — Corbett

Comment by wbb 11.19.15 @ 3:06 pm

Tossing – That is what our fellow commenter BigB is try so hard to accomplish.

Comment by Reed 11.19.15 @ 3:08 pm

Regardless of Miami’s coaching, they have top notch athletes. They won’t want to end the season with a loss, and then think about it for a year. If Pitt could get a jump on them early (not our style), they might lose interest.

Comment by 66Goat 11.19.15 @ 3:15 pm

Hopefully it will be really cold when we play Miami.

Comment by gc 11.19.15 @ 3:24 pm

“Hopefully it will be really cold when we play Miami.”

One of the biggest fallacies by Pitt fans about Miami. Two of the coldest games in Heinz Field history had no effect on Miami in 2003 and 2013.

Comment by Hollywood 11.19.15 @ 3:33 pm

Miami is a game I’ve been worried about all year.

Now, getting concerns about Louisville.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking this one’s in the Bag.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.19.15 @ 3:50 pm

Wow, I think both remaining games will be tough, and no way is Louisville in the bag, so I doubt anybody will be thinking that. If you look at Louisville’s schedule and how they’re trending, I’m actually surprised Vegas has us as a 2 pt favorite, and I suspect Louisville would be favored if they were home. This one should be really tough in my opinion. The one thing I take solace in is our defensive coaching staff, which tends to keep us in games regardless.

Comment by 1618mt 11.19.15 @ 4:26 pm

Yes, but our QB has swagger as the media has pointed out… so that’s worth three points at least.

Comment by Reed 11.19.15 @ 5:00 pm

Hollywood, very accurate observation .. I shivered thru both. Being that we are to get 2 to 4 this weekend up here on the North Coast, I’m thinking I’ll be shivering next Friday also.

Comment by wbb 11.19.15 @ 5:56 pm

I’m thinking the last time we beat the U in Pgh was that Thursday night game in ’97.

Comment by wbb 11.19.15 @ 5:57 pm

We don’t plat Miami this week. It’s Louisville.

Three of four ESPN writers are picking Pitt to win. The chick picked Pitrino’s Cards. She must be a one eyed Queen.

All were low scores – Black Jack like scores to boot.

HTP!

Comment by Erie Express 11.19.15 @ 6:45 pm

Plat = play

Comment by Erie Express 11.19.15 @ 6:45 pm

Miami is collapsing and will not be close to what many think that game was at the start of the season. Louisville will pose a tough game but I think they are going to find a way to lose. Not very impressed with their discipline. No way PSU gets funds for a stadium refurbishment. They are profitable now but clearly the cash cow is not as robust with the scandal and the ticket policy that is maximize cash, but many are not buying into paying big bucks to watch a number of crap teams. As I said, they have as many empty seats as Pitt this year.

Comment by Chethejet 11.19.15 @ 6:48 pm

IMO, Louisville is the tougher of the two remaining games. The Cards have a tough D line. Our O line has been improving, but this will be a big test. As with every week, run the ball, stop the run and we win.

With the series renewal looming in 2016, I would think it is highly unlikely that we see a Pitt – PSU matchup in the Pinstripe. I don’t think either school would want that.

Comment by Iron Duke 11.19.15 @ 7:25 pm

Thank you, thank you, Reed and BigB.

Received my magnet this morning, and it is proudly sitting at the top of my door to my office.

Appreciated greatly. Thanks again!! H2P!!

Comment by Dan 11.19.15 @ 7:26 pm

Both games will be tough. I said this last week, and was very happy with HCPN and crew, coaching leading into these weeks will be huge.

Set goals, get the kids minds straight, fired up, focused.

“hey kids, what sounds better, 8-3 or 7-4” etc. etc.

Louisville makes me nervous, haven’t seen them play since they started winning a few.

Comment by Dan 11.19.15 @ 7:38 pm

Not jumping ahead, fully aware Pitt could lose these games, but, just for kicks………..

don’t pencil N.Carolina in as Coastal Division champ just yet.

Have to play at Va.Tech, only -5, and then at rival N.C.St.

Probably will blow both out, but games still have to be played!!

Comment by Dan 11.19.15 @ 7:42 pm

the way UNC has been playing, I wouldn’t be surprised they don’t give Clemson a hell of a scare in title game. I think they are very underrated nationally.

But on the other hand …it is Beamer’s final home game, and NC St is a big rival game.

Comment by wbb 11.19.15 @ 7:52 pm

Anything is possible but UNC seems to be getting stronger each week. Hope we are too, but Louisville a big challenge.

Dan, from that previous thread, I too favor an eight team playoff, think it is just the right number. However, I think each of the conferences gets a slot, which would be the top 5 then three at large. I would then give the other conferences a slot if they are worthy like the AAC this year. Then two at large.

You should also never have more than two from any one conference. This would make it much more interesting and every conference would have a horse in the race.

Would definitely make conference championships meaningful.

This would also limit most of the politics.

Look at last year where TOSU probably should not have made the playoffs then went on to win.

There will always be some controversy, but if you win your conference, you should have earned a shot.

Comment by gc 11.19.15 @ 9:15 pm

Durand Johnson with an unimpressive 2-9 shooting for 5 pts in the Jonnies 61-59 stolen win over Rutgers tonight. 2 heinous fouls NOT called at the end of the game.

Comment by alcofan 11.19.15 @ 10:24 pm

Punxy Panther – if you are reading this congrats on being on of the dwindling few who hand write thank-you notes. I got yours and greatly appreciate it.

I’ll use the $$$ for other mailings and ThankYou!

Comment by Reed 11.19.15 @ 10:52 pm

I really don’t like an 8 team play off. As it is, three of the four best teams in the country end the season with a loss. I don’t care to see 7 of the best teams end as losers. The only reason to go to 8 would be accommodate ND and the Less than Big 12 conference’s lack of a playoff. Keep it at 4 and let everyone else have some fun and a shot at going out a winner.

Comment by CA-Yinzer 11.20.15 @ 1:43 am

Patrick Gallagher took over as chancellor on Aug. 1,2014. It is amazing how having a competent person at the top can turn things around (tongue in cheek). Hope we close out strong to keep the momentum going. Hail To Pitt!

Comment by Oklahomeboy 11.20.15 @ 7:11 am

Yinz man – the other teams lose as well, because team 5 usually plays team 6-8 and them team 6 plays yeam 5-10. I wasn’t a math major but I think that if there are 40 bowl games, there is a better than average chance that 20 teams will go out a loser. That said, all the losers get a trophy and a watch so that they aren’t made to feel like losers.

Going to 8 allows an undefeated BYU or Boise Teams, access to the big game. If you will recall, Boise finished one year either undefeated or with one loss and ended up ranked 6th or something. They didn’t get a chance to show they could beat the top team. Same with BYU, they also went undefeated I think one year and finished 7th in the polls. It only makes sense to allow them into the conversation.

Best scenario for ACC is that ND gets #5 seed this year. Their AD is not smart because they obviously can’t play in a conference championship, which shorts them one game on their resume’. They should petition for an Independent football championship game which sounds stupid. My hope is that they finish 5th and get pushed to a conference before it goes to 8 teams.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 11.20.15 @ 7:48 am

My take on UPMC giving $10 mil to improve sports facilities…with the numerous uno cause of personal bankruptcy being medical bills-why don’t you lower your prices.. Jeffrey Romoff (7.7 mil a year )The CEO for UPMC has his office on the whole top floor of the US steel building… Used to be a good place to go drink beer…now back to football… Beat Louisville!

Comment by BigB 11.20.15 @ 7:51 am

While I agree an 8 team playoff would be optimal, the trouble with it is that two 25-35k fanbases would have to travel to 3 different locations on 3 successive weeks. A logistical nightmare.

Comment by wbb 11.20.15 @ 8:10 am

BigB, don’t forget his private chef and helicopter at his disposal (not making this up)

Comment by wbb 11.20.15 @ 8:12 am

Guys – I have two (2) 3″ x 5″ Pitt Script magnets left. I will send them to whoever has been agreeing with my comments the most. Let me know – 1st come, 1st served.

Comment by Reed 11.20.15 @ 8:37 am

that probably leaves me out

Comment by wbb 11.20.15 @ 8:42 am

wbb, one way to solve that would be to have the first game played at the home field of the top four. Benefit for finishing on top and guarantees a full house.

Comment by gc 11.20.15 @ 8:47 am

Yes but

– there still is a possibility of 1 or 2 fanbases traveling 3 successive weeks

– and how about the controversy between who is seeded 4th (home game) and who is seeded 5th? And probably the 6th seed will be pretty pissed also.

Comment by wbb 11.20.15 @ 8:55 am

I have always felt that 8 is the optimal number. But yes, the first round would have to be played at the 1-4 seeds home stadium.

Low 50’s and partly cloudy at kickoff tomorrow. No chance of precipitation until around 7p so we should stay dry. With all of the road closures and construction, I may have to parachute into the stadium, but I will be there.

Comment by Iron Duke 11.20.15 @ 8:59 am

There are plenty of worthy teams out there that are left on the outside looking in with the current 4slot FBS playoff system. If you remember, even “good old boy” OSU almost was left out of the playoffs last year.

An eight team playoff system eliminates that issue. Although there may be some debate that unworthy teams get into the playoff if it expands to eight, IMO, it is more important to give the otherwise left out undefeated team a chance at a national championship.

A team that runs the table from a non Power 5 conference might seem inferior to a 11-1 team from one of those five considering their SOS but a team can’t do anything more than taking on every opponent on their schedule remaining undefeated in the process. Therefore, if the system ever does expand to eight, the language in the selection process should be defined to automatically include any undefeated FBS program that otherwise would have been excluded from the selection process.

With a road to a NC requiring three additional wins against the most elite of the college football world, the pretenders will quickly be weeded out from the true contenders. In this expanded system however, it does permit for the Cinderella Effect to transpire when every once in a while a team like this year’s undefeated (so far) Iowa, might still get left out by a 11-1 team taking their place in the playoff when in fact the Hawkeye’s could very well beat anybody in the nation if given the chance.

I’m sure there will be many opposing views but that’s my spin on the post season process.

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.20.15 @ 9:05 am

I’d like nothing more than ND being left out this year.

They could easily lose @Stanford, but it would really be sweet if they won out, and one of the Oklahoma’s passed them.

Comment by Dan 11.20.15 @ 9:43 am

Magnet please oh great and wise one Reed.

Comment by longsufferingpittfan 11.20.15 @ 9:55 am

IMO, if Ok St finishes unbeaten, they should surpass ND. Oklahoma is debatable but I would opt for ND since a 2 point loss to Clemson is so much better than a loss to Texas on a neutral field. BTW, ND beat Tex 39-3

Comment by wbb 11.20.15 @ 10:14 am

I am having 50 more Script PITT Mustard Magnets made..Reed should have 0 left !! Get your orders in and get those letters of the the Chancellor and AD…Let’s get back to the Mustard and our distinctive look…Hail to PITT..

Comment by BigB 11.20.15 @ 10:18 am

@wbb, perfectly worded, Ok St. passes
Oklahoma debatable.

Tough sell for OU, witht that loss to Texas and ND destroying them, allthough I think OU is one of the best teams out there right now.

Look pretty good on both sides of the ball, and have a really good QB.
