Narduzzi Coach of the Year? Oh Yeah….

 PITT’S NARDUZZI NAMED CANDIDATE FOR
PAUL “BEAR” BRYANT COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD

PITTSBURGH—First-year head coach Pat Narduzzi, who has Pitt back in the nation’s Top 25 for the first time in six seasons, has been named a candidate for the 2015 Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award.

Narduzzi is one of 22 head coaches revealed today as candidates for the prestigious recognition. The Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award honors excellence in college football coaching while raising funds to fight heart disease and stroke through its partnership with the American Heart Association.

It is the only college coaching honor determined after all bowl games are concluded and is voted on by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. This year’s winner will be honored on January 13 at the 30th Annual American Heart Association Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards presented by Marathon Oil Corporation in Houston, Texas.

Under Narduzzi, the Panthers are ranked No. 25 in this week’s Associated Press poll, their first in-season Top 25 appearance since 2009. Pitt owns a 5-1 overall record—its best start since the ’09 campaign—and is 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time. The Panthers have sole possession of first place in the ACC’s Coastal Division.

Pitt’s ascendance under Narduzzi is particularly evident on the defensive side of the ball. The Panthers boast the nation’s No. 17 defense, yielding just 300.8 yards per game, nearly 60 yards fewer than last year. Pitt already has 22 sacks, three more than it compiled in all of last season.

Remarkably, Pitt has achieved its strong start playing four of its first six contests on the road. The Panthers will play their fifth road game in seven weeks when they visit Syracuse (3-3, 1-1 ACC) this Saturday for an ESPNU noon national telecast.

The 2015 Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award candidates:

Art Briles, Baylor

Matt Campbell, Toledo

David Cutcliffe, Duke

Mark Dantonio, Michigan State

9+ wins will make it a lot easier for him to get this award. This is a good thing and should give a bit of a push to Pitt awareness and recruiting even if he doesn’t win it.

I am so sick of watching SEC highlights on ESPN… Waiting for the day that we reappear on the highlight reels of ESPN… look out world here we come!

Working our way back into the national spotlight… Building a solid program… Young man want to play football for coach Duzz… students are beginning to take a more active part and fans will start coming through the gate… All is well with Pitt Panther football… Now could somebody find something we can bitch about

Beating Doc to the punch – one game at a time. The list is 1/5 of D1 coaches. Still he has done a marvelous job in all aspects. Go Pitt!

Have to love the fact that we are even on this list. Nice recognition at this point, but have to keep winning. Same for all listees. Mid season award would (IMO) would go to Rhule at Temple.

BigB … Another infuriating Pitt Basketball team will start play soon! So there’s that !

Congrats Coach Duzz… Don’t lose focus on Cuse!!

Turned us around and deserves recognition

If you did not see the video interviews with Chaney and Renaldo Hill by Sam Werner, I highly recommend.

link to blogs.post-gazette.com

About 1/3 of the way through the Hill video, he provides a glimpse into the innerworkings of how the staff operates and interacts with each other and the players.

Combined with that SI article in the previous post, it really shows that Narduzzi was prepared to be a head coach WAY before he got the Pitt job.

It’s truly a stunning reversal of fortune for us.

BigB, Pitt would have to be in the “playoff” in order to make the ESPN reel. Case in point: their relentless showing of American League also-rans instead of anything Pirates related.

I think gets it with 10 wins and the ACC Championship trophy. Until then lets just focus on Syracuse.

Fuente will take a major job this season. If USC weren’t full of themselves they would hire him. What he has done in Memphis is amazing. The kid at Houston will also be big time in 1-2 years.

Imagine for a second you reported to Steve Pederson? How Fraud lasted as long as he did is amazing and Chryst with zero pulse as well.

Narduzzi has done a great job especially considering the lack of any admin support and the culture that was a F-

Duzzi is a shoe-in for the award if Fuente doesn’t win it. 8-9 wins should do it. Killing the SOP monster is bigger than any other acomplishment in all of sports.

Comment by Jackagain 10.21.15 @ 1:55 pm

Agree, UPitt. I think Fuente, Herman and Campbell (Toledo), will get very nice gigs soon.

Comment by johnnygossamer 10.21.15 @ 1:58 pm

Only way Narduzzi has a shot for this is if he runs the table, wins the ACC, and gets into the New Years six – they won’t let Pitt in the playoff even if he did.

At least one of those guys are going to have a remarkable, even historic year.

Comment by BostonsCommon 10.21.15 @ 2:10 pm

Reed, I really screwed up the timing of my article. I meant 2pm not 2 am haha.

Comment by Justin 10.21.15 @ 2:17 pm

Don’t forget about the guy who beat Narduzzi.. Ferentz…they are almost a lock to play in Big Ten championship game with their remaining schedule and really a 3 game lead since they own tie breaker on the 2 win teams.

ALso Rhule at Temple in Top25 for for first time in forever and also a win over PSU for first time in forever as well.

Narduzzi would probably need to win ACC championship game to get this.

Comment by milobloom 10.21.15 @ 2:48 pm

Nice to make the list but C’mon Man. A lot of very competitive games coming up, starting with this Saturday.

Comment by gc 10.21.15 @ 3:07 pm

Narduzzi spoke to the team this week. He said rankings and lists mean nothing…until the end.

Comment by pathfinder 10.21.15 @ 4:02 pm

Pathfinder Agree. This is a HUGE game We win at Cuse and 4 of the last 5 at home….This is the biggest game in the last 30 years IMO.

Comment by Ellicotty City Sean 10.21.15 @ 7:25 pm

Great company. True, it’s the end of the season that counts, but it’s nice to be mentioned with so many excellent coaches.

Comment by CA-Yinzer 10.21.15 @ 9:22 pm

I not sure that I would call this a HUGE game. This game lost is a downer but I’d take a loss on Saturday if I could trade it for a win against either UNC or Duke.

I’m not inferring Pitt is going to gag on this game, even though this is a typical game that SOP would find a way to lose. I’m thinking SOP is dead, beating Syracuse pretty much would confirm that death and write the obituary. I’m confident in this one. In fact, I’m still waiting for that “breakout” game where Pitt dominates an opponent. At this point in the season, if Syracuse isn’t that one, then there ain’t going to be one.

The three games after Syracuse are true HUGE games. I’d trade a beat down loss against the Domers for two squeak by wins over both UNC & Duke right now.

Things have all been going right for the Panthers after the major downer of losing Conner in the opener. So much so, that is old time Pitt fans just kind of expect something bad to happen. After all that is the Pitt way, right? WRONG!

This is the new Narduzzi era, if his coaching and motivation is going to turn that ride then Pitt wins this one to go 6-1 carrying even more momentum into our Thursday night showdown with UNC. I will say this, if that be the case, if Pittsburgh doesn’t show up in force for that game at Heinz Field then shame on yinz!

Comment by Dr. Tom 10.22.15 @ 9:53 am

If Pitt accomplishes what Tossing Thabeets predicted before the year began, and the only loss Pitt incurs is against the non-ACC Domers, HCPN has a great shot at this award as we’ll be the Coastal champs and playing in the ACC Championship game.
If you want to really appreciate the turnaround this would be, REMEMBER HOUSTON!!!
