Nine Months In…

Well, it has been nine months since Paul Chryst left for northern pastures and Pitt hired Pat Narduzzi in his place and this may be a good time to review what has happened since then.

We’ve seen some big changes surrounding the Pitt football program as Narduzzi hired a new staff and Pitt hired a new Athletic Director who came with a fatter checkbook.  We’ve gone back to the ‘Script on the helmets and our season ticket sales and fundraising numbers have both gone up.  You have to attribute those last items to Narduzzi and the energy he’s brought to the program so far.

With the spring and fall camps giving us a look at the new staff and new players in action and with three games under his belt this is a good time to take a hard look both backward and forward to see if Narduzzi has met his challenges and our expectations in his new position.  Of course there are nine more games to be played so the football itself is still ongoing but let’s take a 360 degree look at Narduzzi’s tenure so far anyway.

The following is how I think Narduzzi has handled his new role and responsibilities after the quarter of the season has passed.  Please keep in mind that I have had a strong ‘wait and see’ attitude and issued a 6 -6 prediction for the regular season before the season started.  Here is how I asses his body of work to this point.

To recap the season so far; Pitt sits at 2-1 just as almost everyone thought we’d would, even to the point of us losing to Iowa as most thought we would.  Nearly everyone felt that we’d beat both YSU and Akron even if they weren’t ‘lock to win’ games based on their beating us once each in the not so distant past. I have no problem with a 2-1 record as any winning record for Pitt is a good thing no matter who we beat.  I felt we played well enough to win the away game at Iowa so that is a positive point also.

Narduzzi’s done well getting the kids and his staff focused and ready to play out those games and don’t see that changing in the near future. The players seem to like the new staff and seem excited about the direction the program is heading. Now, we have heard that before so a grain of salt at the ready may be a good thing to have when thinking about that.

Personnel and Administrative Issues:

Narduzzi is making some mistakes because this is his first rodeo as a head coach and that will lead to some missteps as can be expected.  I’ve had the feeling from the time of his hire through both pre-season camps that a lot of fans tended to overlook his lack of experience being the lead dog and thought he’d naturally and successfully move into his new job on the lone strength of his being a great DC.  That rarely happens in a rookie HC situation and regardless of wins and losses at the end of the season the real measure of how a new HC has done is how the football program as a whole is progressing in his first year and that may be more important than how the football team itself has fared.

That will be the case when we review what Narduzzi accomplished in the arena after the last game is finished this season regardless of his W-L record, at least in my mind.  Wins are great and important and we want a lot of them but with any major changes the status and strength of the organization itself is paramount.

There is a vast difference in responsibilities Narduzzi has to handle between being a full-time HC as opposed to being a coordinator.  He found this out first hand earlier in the year when he was hit with the news that two of his starting players had been arrested and were awaiting court dates. Both players, Tyler Boys and Rori Blair, were charged with DUIs and the latter’s case included possession of a Schedule 1 controlled substance along with four other serious charges. That couldn’t have been easy for a man who, when something like this happened at MSU while he was there, didn’t have the eyes of the sporting world focused on him to see how he’d handle it because it was above his pay grade to do so.  Not any longer though.

It’s no secret that I think he has done the necessary actions in handling both those personnel situations so far with his levy of suspensions and other internal discipline.  Other Pitt football followers’ opinions differ on that count.  Regardless, he may have his new leadership duties be tested again depending on the outcome of Blair’s trial in the PA Court of Common Pleas that begins on Oct 9th.

Thinking about this issue I can’t remember a time going back to Dave Wannstedt’s time where a Pitt player has faced serious criminal charges like this while he was still on the team.  I may be mistaken with that fact but Narduzzi’s handling of this upcoming trial and the disposition of the charges incurred may set a program precedent.  All around not an easy thing for a new HC to deal with especially when the subjects are two highly regarded players who hadn’t been in trouble before.

Football related decisions:

Take a look back at the Weekly Media Planner schedules we post every week.  Even with all the other demands on his time between games, and there are many, Narduzzi has to be available just about any time the media is present. During game week the HC has at least five instances where he has to drop what he’s doing and deal with the media and address issues external to the playing football. Are we seeing Chaney or Conklin on the big stage nearly as often like we do with Narduzzi? No, and that is a real drain on his time and energy.  The ‘CEO’ of the program has to handle a million different things that have nothing to do with his main weekly goal of winning a game… or more precisely, he has to ensure his staff has taken care of all of it so that he can concentrate on having the game preparations run smoothly.

A new HC also has to make decisions based on what he and his staff wants to make happen, not on what the fans or the media wants to see.  This is true for even experienced HCs arriving at a new job but when a rookie HC makes big and unpopular decisions it puts extra pressure on his shoulders.

One of the most important tasks that a new HC has to take on is looking forward one or two years and then deciding what is best for the team and program both now and in the future. That means sometimes a HC will play personnel, most often are younger kids, so that they are well versed in the new offensive and defensive systems and coaching approaches in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of his contract.  There is a trade off when a HC does that and it may mean a loss or two more in his initial season.  This happens a lot more than we think it does.

That means extra and immediate pressure and criticism from the fans, boosters, alumni and the school’s administration; all who want to see immediate results.  Paul Chryst did this in a real sense when he got rid of a lot of players who he thought, for various reasons, wouldn’t help the team as much as his own new players would in the near future.  That didn’t work out as well as he expected on the field though.

All of these issues and more ‘routinely’ urgent situations popped up in front of Narduzzi’s face starting the day after he was hired by Pitt.  I have to say that he’s handled things well and aside from a few public utterances such as mentioning mistakes his players made in a game and his suspect “4th down go-no go” call in the Iowa game he’s made much the same decisions that good and experienced HCs tend to make.

This brings us to his biggest challenge and the choice he made regarding the starting lineup for 2015. We know what has happened to this point with our QBs. After a close run competition in the fall camp both Narduzzi and Chaney used the first three games to try to figure out which QB, Chad Voytik of Nate Peterman would be the best player to advance the team through the rest of the schedule.

It was obvious that Voytik was given a shorter audition period than Peterman had once the season started.  That wasn’t the case in the fall camp however as they both got equal time as QB1 with the 1st string offense and playing against the 1st string defense.  Peterman played well, especially in the scrimmages, and that real-time production probably stuck in the coaches’ minds when the time came to rotate both QBs with the first team offense during the actual games. Narduzzi has said thatThere were times we thought Nathan would pass him (meaning Voytik), but he didn’t,” when talking about the two kids’ play in camp.  Voytik got the green light to start in the opener because 1) He played well in camp, 2) he was the incumbent and 3) they wanted to see his demeanor and abilities out on the field for themselves.

Then Chaney and Narduzzi used those first three games to make sure Peterman could play in real time as well as he did in camp…as some QBs are better in practices than they are in real time.

It seemed as if the fact that Narduzzi did what said he do in letting the QBs play their way onto the field took fans by surprise.  Voytik had a pretty decent season last year and showed progress as the season went by so it is understandable that some felt he shouldn’t be benched for a transfer who never really excelled on the field at his old school.

But every new HC is going to change things up from the previous one.  Why is that hard for some to accept when we have seen it happen with every HC at Pitt over the last 12 years at least?  Harris had a big passing offense; DW put the brakes on incumbent QB Tyler Palko’s passing and went to a more run-heavy offense.  Then Graham came in with his high-octane offense obsession even though he didn’t have the QB to make it work.

The wheel spins around again and Chryst comes in and gets rid of a slew of players who won’t fit his system, goes back to the run heavy offense and tries to make Voytik a pocket QB. Then when Voytik can pass a bit better Chryst allows him to run more as the season goes on.

Now Narduzzi comes in and goes back to a more pro-style offense and he and Chaney use new personnel to make that happen.  That decision was made because last year’s team didn’t win enough games to make the new HC feel he had to ‘stick with what worked’ because the truth is that it didn’t work all that well.  Therefore a QB who was on a 7 loss team was expendable to the new staff.

However, the main point here isn’t if Voytik got shafted with shortened playing time as he may well have been, or if Peterman won the competition outright as that outcome could have been slanted toward him even before camp began.

The point is that Narduzzi came in and instead of being awed or intimidated by his first HC job he put the dice in the cup and shook out a major change to the team. I say team because it isn’t just the offense that will feel that change but Narduzzi sent a strong message to every single player on the roster that there are no ‘jobs for life’ at Pitt any longer.

As said above HCs do try to win in their 1st season but they also are looking at least one season ahead to when their new staff, systems, plans, and players have been in place for a full season.  It was obvious that once we learned Peterman had two full years with Pitt after his transfer there was a good chance we’d see a QB change sooner or later to get Narduzzi’s first two seasons off to the start he wanted..

That certainly wasn’t an easy decision to make yet Narduzzi dove right into it with both eyes open. Agree with the change at QB or not we can’t say that Narduzzi hasn’t done the hard work and taken the chances to position Pitt football to be successful.  Time will tell, even week to week, whether some of his decisions pan out and help the team and program or not. But he took strong actions when he felt he needed to.

I find it exciting that Narduzzi came in and instead of just blabbering on about how ‘things are going to be different… no really, they are!’ (T. Graham, circa 2011) he is taking concrete steps to ensure that positive changes happen both on the playing field and off of it.  This alone makes me feel more comfortable about his hire and more optimistic that we will see a different Pitt football program making progress going forward.  Still thinking we’ll be 6-6 on the field but in better shape off of it.

NOTE: Here is a quick comparison of Pitt’s defense between last season and this one and through three games this is where we stand.  The numbers shown are the opponent’s…

Defensive Stats 2014 2015
1st Downs 37 46
Rushing 232  2.4 ypc 276  3.3 ypc
Passing 401  36/79 for 45% 599 54/102 for 53%
TOP 25:32 28:30
TDs scored 6 7
INTs thrown 5 1

In 2014 our opponents were Delaware, BC, and FIU.  This season they were YSU, Akron and Iowa.

Reed – enjoyed your article – very informative and waiting to see is the best approach.

Comparing 2014 opponents to 2015, we played similar competition:

Delaware = YSU (sub-division teams)
FIU = Akron (even rained for both games)
BC = Iowa (mid-level P5 teams)

The biggest difference is that James “the beast” Conner is missing in 2015. Our O is scoring less this year than last, and Conner is part of the reason – OC Chaney is the other part.

Regarding the D, while it appears we are hitting harder and the eye test looks better with Out-house gone, the stats prove there isn’t much improvement.

Hopefully both sides of the ball improve against VT – we also need SP’s to improve on the kicking side.

HTP!

The largest issue on offense that is still unsettled is the loss of James Conner. The enormous buzz kill that his lost could have had on this team was buffered by two events. First, the huge coming out party Mr. Ollison had once Conner limped to the bench in our opener and second, the demeanor of our new HC regarding his loss. Narduzzi made no bones about the magnitude of the loss but was quick to emphasize that the “next man up” mindset had to be implemented in order for the team not to miss a beat.

That attitude permeated the team and had a positive influence on both our offense and defense in simply stepping up their game in both the Akron and the Iowa games. I say that this issue remains unsettled however because in those two contests the running game was ineffective relative to the home opener’s running game stats.

I think that both James and Ollison had some major dings of their own that they’ve been dealing with, so how well healed those two are going into this week will mean a lot in determining if our running game issues truly are resolved in Conner’s absence or not.

One thing is for sure. Narduzzi has his defense playing more aggresively than we’ve seen during HCPC’s tenure. If the Offense can match that playing intensity and the running game gets some production back with James and Ollison now healthy, I’m predicting a hard fought win in Blacksburg come Saturday.

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.27.15 @ 2:58 pm

I’ll throw my prediction out now, since I have a busy work week ahead:

43-42 Pitt wins

Four TD’s and 5 FG’s – OC Chaney get’s the troops healthy and marching to his “tune”.

Dr.Tom,
Repeating from the last posting concerning your Northern Va. friends and their feelings about Pitt are what rivalries are made of. If Pitt can put another victory on Va. Tech the groundwork will have been set for ACC rivalry. Which will make Pitt really part of the ACC.

Comment by Spindler's Spirit 09.27.15 @ 5:52 pm

I think the defensive stats are misleading for two reasons, the one stated, level of competition and secondly the fact that without Conner, the offense does not control the ball nearly as much.

I do agree that the verdict will not be in for some time although it seems some are ready to lynch Chaney already.

Agree Dr. Tom that we have had great luck vs. VT, but not so much in Blacksburg. If we could pull off the upset, I agree a good rivalry could be in the offing.

Steelers could be in for some very tough times.

I like Narduzzi, but then I liked, Chryst, Graham, and Wanny, until they were gone.

They all have their strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully Narduzzi will have fewer mistakes than the other guys, and not make them twice.

Comment by gc 09.27.15 @ 6:33 pm

Early line has VT favored by 4.5 pts. Home field helps VT. I think Pitt squeaks out a close win – I’ll take the points.

Have a great week guys!

Where do the four more wins come from ? The schedule looks harder after this past weekend.

Comment by Fred filopek 09.27.15 @ 9:19 pm

Regarding the defensive stat comparisons, YSU way better than that horrible Delaware team, Akron and FIU a wash, and the 2015 Iowa offense way better than BC. Last year, the defense wasn’t exposed until the second half vs. Iowa.

I have a sense that the defense is moving up the learning curve more quickly than the offense. Let’s see how it goes vs. ACC teams starting Saturday.

Comment by Iron Duke 09.27.15 @ 9:50 pm

@ChrisDokish: Pitt basketball has lost prospects to Penn State, Seton Hall, and Providence recently. Good times.

Comment by NickC 09.28.15 @ 12:07 am

A rivalry has to be both ways. Sorry, but VT is not and will not become our rival. VT already has a rival – UVA.

Comment by rayhpgh 09.28.15 @ 6:13 am

Reed

Good points. Peterman is the QB for the offense Pitt wants to run. IMO, Pitt wants to run an offense similar to the Steelers. That is, have the ability to run multiple sets from three tight ends to 5 wide. Problem is, they don’t have all the players to do it yet and there is a big learning curve.

They need to recruit some better receivers or one of the freshman need to step up.

The OL needs to be coached better and play to their potential.

Whitehead is the Nate Peterman of the defense. Beating out Amara, Howard and the other Pitts. Howard is playing because Mitchell is hurt.

Narduzzi is doing exactly what he said…letting the players earn and show who the starters are. Bradley and Wirginis are starting to earn it as well as many D linemen.

As Narduzzi said, he didn’t walk in and inherit a team of 5 star recruits. He is trying to build a program and it will take longer than this year.

Comment by notrocketscience 09.28.15 @ 6:16 am

9 months so far so I guess we just gave birth to our new Panthers. So far so good. A tough loss to Iowa but we did some good things – OMG, we completed a pass for a first down on 4th & 13 at a crucial time in the game. Seems like it’s been years since that happened. D hitting hard and often like Chicago voters. Maddox giving us our best corner play since Revis. We have real competition for playing time which has not been the case in quite a few years. We are definitely heading in the right direction. I even see us ending that 32-game when behind 4th quarter losing streak soon. But maybe I’m an optimist. GO PITT

Comment by rayhpgh 09.28.15 @ 6:24 am

VT has had a hard time stopping the run, OC JC has had 2 weeks to prepare. The offense should look crisp and execute correctly. No excuses!

Comment by Pittastic 09.28.15 @ 7:02 am

Ray – your point about that 4th & 13 completion is a good one. It was a very real ‘clutch’ play and NP executed it beautifully. I think plays like that are what this staff is looking for in a QB… the ability to grab big yards very suddenly.

As to the CBs – Narduzzi & Conklin have to be happy with the youth in that unit. The three arguably best players back there are in their 1st two year… Whitehead is a FR, Amara is a SO as is Maddox. Plus we have a lot of good prospects in the rest of the true and rsFR.

Ray,
What limits a school to only one rivalry ?
As a Pitt fan I view Penn St and WVU as rivals, and to a slightly lesser extent Norte Dame one too.

Comment by Spindler's Spirit 09.28.15 @ 7:17 am

Yes, as some have already pointed out, the D stats above are misleading for obvious reasons. The defense is much improved this year, though I think Conklin deserves a lot of the credit.

The big questions left are: (1) How much and how quickly will the OL improve, and (2) How much will we transform our offensive attach given the loss of Connor etc.

Comment by 1618mt 09.28.15 @ 7:20 am

BigB – Can’t find your email anywhere… if you went through this site’s email link it goes straight to Chas. But I’m not seeing any warnings with this site on my computer.

Those defensive stats were put up because yesterday Erie said he was predicting my doing so in my next article. The defense looks different but we are giving up the “Big Play” way too often. in three games we have given up this:

5 rushing plays over 30 yards each.

4 passes over 30 yards each

Included are three plays over 70 yards and a 81 yard play and 2 TDs. All the series with those big plays in them resulted in opponents’ scores.

Comment by rayhpgh 09.28.15 @ 8:28 am

A lot of our D’s “big (negative) plays” this year came in the first game against YSU with our new coaching staff shuffling tons of players, especially in the second half, in and out of the game. Other than that, it’s pretty much isolated to the same guy that has given up big plays for our team the past few years.

Comment by 1618mt 09.28.15 @ 8:32 am

Injuries are a part of the game but losing your All-American, who ran for 1700 hundred yards last year, your first string D-tackle, a very good running back, and having several other linemen and running backs with dings, has definitely affected the development of the offense.

The loss of Mitchell, has had less affect bit we can assume some on the defense.

The offense will be challenged buy these losses all year long. The question is can Chaney get enough production out of what he has to win.

I think having a QB who is pass first will pay off, but time will tell and we need some running game to come around.

Still think we need to win seven games to close the deal on some of the better recruits.

Still very high on this coaching staff and what they have accomplished all things considered.

Final report card won’t be out until January.

This is minor, but as for Va. Tech being fired up after a loss,

I don’t know, playing at noon instead of Saturday night could help Pitt.

Tough place to play, tough crowd and all, but the noon start could make for a flat crowd and a flat Va.Tech team.

Besides, once you get a loud fired up crowd, their are only minor degrees of separation between them and some other really loud place to play.

Pitt will face no tougher place to place or rowdy crowd than they did at Iowa.

I still give kudo’s to Iowa, that was one hell of a college football atmosphere.

We could really use this win to get a little momentum and to start the ACC stretch run off right.

Reed – as to Oct 8 “trial date” – that is just a formal arraignment date where Blair is informed of the charges he faces and is informed if he is eligible for ARD – 1st offense DUI a no-brainer. Nothing record setting here – TB HCPN been down this road. Thought of you when I saw the PG article – Chaney + Reed/Dark Knight + God = Starter
Spinder and Ray – As for rivalry I thought we were developing one with VT when they bolted for ACC (irony). There is indeed nothing to prevent multiple rivalries – Pitt and Ped State are no longer rivalries; I hope VT rivalry continues to develop. Although UVA views VT like we do WVU it is no comparison. It is impossible for any fans to be as obnoxious, violent and crude as WVU.
Thought – Frankinliar recruits five stars but he coaches like a half star himself.

BigB – I remembered exactly who you are… how could I forgeT?. I am sending you an email reply very soon regarding the subject matter… and thanks so much.

* Four of those “big plays” were YSU, one was Akron and three were Iowa.

* Correct about the difference in penalties… at this point last season we had 16 for 140; this season we have 12 for 88 yards.

* Big difference in turnovers this year though and not for the better:

in ’14 we created 6 fumbles and recovered 1 and we had 5 INTs. This season we created 3 fumbles and recovered 1 and we have only 1 INT. So a 6:2 ratio from last year to now.

Amara has moved from strong safety to free safety, probably because of Mitchell’s injury issue. Also, Weah is now second string behind Boyd.

PG article from today includes HCPN saying that they do indeed have a ‘package’ for Voytik vs. the Hokies, as I requested yesterday. So glad HCPN routinely checks the Blather…

Dan – you are right on about the atmosphere at Iowa. That was one of the best I’ve been to. The black and gold by seating section was impressive. Good fans, enthusiastic, but respectful. The students were wound up but not obnoxious.

I’ve always found Va Tech fans to be very knowledgeable and respectful as well. They support the hell out of their team, can’t knock them for that.

So next week NC St. (who is starting to look like the real deal) at Va Tech, Ga Tech at Clemson. How huge would it be in the Coastal if Pitt could find a way to get a W this Saturday?

I have us winning at VT but my predictions mean very little or nothing.

Comment by Frank MD 09.28.15 @ 11:41 am

@ Fred filopek, after this weekend, I thought the ACC Coastal Division looks more wide open then ever! GT’s offense sputtered, Virginia is going in the wrong direction. Syracuse didn’t show me anything special in their home loss to LSU and VT gets beat by ECU.

Where do our next four wins come from? That one I sure don’t know. That’s why they play the games, right? Rather, I’d ask you, what teams on our remaining schedule look “unbeatable” to you. I don’t see a one. Notre Dame looks to be the best of the bunch but for some reason Pitt always plays ND tuff, so don’t count them out in that on either.

I like our chances against VT with our extra week of preparation. I’m thinking that we are going to see our offense blossum in this game.Somebody is going to step up to fill the vacuum left by Conner’s injury. I thought it was Ollison, initially but now I’m not sure. But I see one of our three young backs making a big splash on Saturday with 100+ yards rushing. If so, then that should be enough for our third win.

Regarding ND, our new HC has experience with devising a D game plan to stop the ND O, dating back to his days at MSU. The Doc is correct, we always seem to play ND tough, and this year you can add in the Duzz factor.

HTP!

Georgia Tech’s STRUGGLING Offense. Lacks the Line and Backs to make it all go. Quarterback also being exposed a little bit.

Pitt DUE… no… make that OVER-DUE… to take Georgia Tech to the WOODSHED!

Right now, believe Narduzzi has the Players and the Scheme to turn the Wreck O’ into a TOTAL SHAMBLES.

Now, as for VaTech… now that’s a DIFFERENT story.

Dr Tom – good analysis. I agree with the running game, but would add:

We need to convert >60% of our 3rd downs, and win the Time of Possession handily. We’ve got to keep our D off the field, so they will be strong in 4th Qtr. No more 4th Q comebacks!

Comment by Savannah Panther 09.28.15 @ 12:57 pm

VT defence is giving up 33 points a game to FBS opponents. Northern Illinois and Westren Mich gave up less points to theOSU than VT did. Pitts offence needs to be moving the ball and putting points on the board, if not can we all agree there is a problem with the O?

The GOOD News is we have OFFICIALLY move up from the OUTHOUSE when it comes to Defense.

Wow, the first nine months. I would give the state of the program, a C+, slightly better than average across the college football landscape. I would give the direction of the program, a B+.

The proof is not in wins and losses this year, hence the C+. This is a transition year for the players, the coaches and the administration, and I think as a whole, we underestimate the importance of time for each of those elements to mature. This is why I have preached for so long that continuity is so critical to improvement. Our football program is not mature right now because of all the new faces (coaches, players, administration), new ideas (coaches, administration), which is fine. We now need to commit to the process of getting better.

The many that believe we should schedule a tougher out of conference schedule are misguided. In college, we have no pre-season. We need to get better by winning. At a minimum, we need to come out of the ooc schedule with a 3-1 record. Listen to all the pundits and nobody is making any waves about scheduling. College players learn by winning. Our players will not have any positive takeaways from the Iowa game except that they lost. Now, the coaches might learn some things, like Nard going for it on 4th down. In college you just don’t learn from losses. You learn from winning. We need 3 pre-season games that we know we are going to win every year.

ND is not a rivalry game. Schedule either WVU or PSU as our one difficult game per year. I prefer PSU just because they have always been my most hated team. WVU just never measured up in class, sorry. I would put the likes of Temple, Navy, Delaware on the schedule to keep recruiting ties to that area. I would also get into Florida with either UCF or USF each year, opposite of our home/away with Miami.

Anyway, the 9 month grade is good. I think the final grade occurs after the first real recruiting class is signed in early february 2016.

POD Can’t see us beating GT right now. In order to stop the option, you need solid play out of the DE’s and LB’s. Right now we have one very good linebacker and suspect play at DE. I give them a better chance against Duke than GT.

Reed great article as always. On paper it certainly appears that last year’s defense was better than this year’s defense, at least through three games. What the stats don’t tell you is that last year’s defense was a House of Cards waiting to fall at any moment and that peaked in the first three games, and this year’s defense has nothing but upside.

Will be very interesting to see final year stats and what we look like in three months.

@NickC–Pitt didn’t lose player to Providence. Pitt had that point guard and another on campus same weekend and was only going to take one of them. Kithcart committed first so that left the other guy to commit elsewhere–which he did to Providence yesterday. Both were about equally rated and Pitt wasn’t going to take two point guards in the same class.

Pod – we played a D2 school. The worst team in the MAC and a below avg Big 10 team.
