Here is the shortened version of the official Pitt vs Youngstown State University game that will be played at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Saturday, September 5th.  The game begins at 1:00 pm.

Here is the full .pdf of the same game notes put out by the Pitt Athletic Media  Department.  There is a ton of info here and it has been helpful to me to have a copy by my side as I watch/listen to the games.

GAME STORYLINES

PITT OPENS ITS 126TH SEASON OF INTERCOLLEGIATE FOOTBALL—AND THE PAT NARDUZZI COACHING ERA—WHEN THE PANTHERS HOST YOUNGSTOWN STATE AT HEINZ FIELD.

NARDUZZI MAKES HIS PITT DEBUT FOLLOWING AN ACCOMPLISHED EIGHT-YEAR TENURE AT MICHIGAN STATE (2007-14) AS DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. UNDER HIS DIRECTION, THE SPARTANS WERE THE ONLY TEAM TO RANK IN THE NATION’S TOP 10 IN TOTAL DEFENSE AND RUSHING DEFENSE EACH SEASON FROM 2011-14.

NARDUZZI HAS DEEP TIES TO YOUNGSTOWN AND YSU. HIS FATHER, THE LATE BILL NARDUZZI, WAS THE PENGUINS’ HEAD COACH FROM 1975-85, LEADING THEM TO TWO NCAA DIVISION II PLAYOFF APPEARANCES, INCLUDING THE 1979 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

PAT NARDUZZI WAS A STARTING LINEBACKER FOR HIS FATHER IN 1985, LEADING THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE (OVC) IN TACKLES AS A FRESHMAN AT YSU.

YSU WILL ALSO HAVE A NEW HEAD COACH ON ITS SIDELINE IN BO PELINI, WHO SPENT THE PAST SEVEN SEASONS LEADING NEBRASKA. LIKE NARDUZZI, PELINI IS ALSO A YOUNGSTOWN NATIVE.

NARDUZZI (URSULINE) AND PELINI (CARDINAL MOONEY) STARRED AT RIVAL YOUNGSTOWN HIGH SCHOOLS. IN THEIR LAST MEETING AGAINST EACH OTHER, URSULINE ROUTED MOONEY, 35-0, IN A GAME THAT DECIDED THE 1984 STEEL VALLEY CONFERENCE TITLE.

PITT’S ADDITIONAL YOUNGSTOWN TIES INCLUDE DEFENSIVE LINE COACH TOM SIMS, WHO COACHED AT YSU FROM 2010-14.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT PHIL DECAPITO, A FORMER PENGUINS G.A. FROM 2012-14; AND FRESHMAN TAILBACK DARRIN HALL, WHO STARRED AT NEARBY AUSTINTOWN FITCH HIGH SCHOOL.

THIS WILL BE THE FOURTH ALL-TIME MEETING BETWEEN PITT AND YSU. THE PANTHERS WILL LOOK TO AVENGE A 2012 SEASON-OPENING LOSS (31-17) TO THE PENGUINS.

Gc- then he got beat out. Some kids develop faster. If he’s not playing as Jr then worry. It may be as simple as fit too. Grimm was brought for a power rushing offense. This will be a more balanced attack.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 08.31.15 @ 5:01 pm

But why root for Foster as opposed to any other guy? None of us are happy with being mediocre or worse for thirty years, just seems that you get a lot of joy throwing up in our face. SP is gone, you need to let it go.

TT, good point on the balanced attack. Chaney may prefer quicker guys.

Comment by gc 08.31.15 @ 5:10 pm

Oh contare, Upitt, I think that we should concern ourselves with fu#king YSU. I’d like to see us riding them like a Sandusky schoolboy, all game long. Was that insensitive? I apologize, just couldn’t resist the off color commentary opportunity.

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.31.15 @ 5:10 pm

Doc – I for one hate Being PC. GC – I agree but that Pederson really burns my ass. Go Pitt! What is the line?

Comment by Upittbaseball 08.31.15 @ 5:16 pm

But, Grimm was a 4 star, ranked 7th in the state and top 30 in the country, just seems strange there is no mention of him.

Comment by gc 08.31.15 @ 5:21 pm

I always root for local kids, just not as hard when they go to PSU or WVU. Although he won’t admit it, he probably has had 2nd, 3rd and 24th thoughts about not choosing Pitt (remember, his family thought he was coming to Pitt until right before)

Maybe he’ll deter other locals from going to a top echelon school and being lost in the shuffle

Comment by wbb 08.31.15 @ 5:42 pm

Wbb – Are you serious? He is a RS Sophmore in the SEC at a Top 5 program. He is stsrting this year. You guys are crazy if you don’t think he will
Get sick exposure if he does well.

Comment by Upittbaseball 08.31.15 @ 5:53 pm

Will it be enough for him to go pro next year? What if he gets benched in favor of the freshman behind him?

Comment by gc 08.31.15 @ 6:00 pm

Barring injury Boyd gets paid next year, he is already in the record books in his home town.

Comment by gc 08.31.15 @ 6:03 pm

I don’t fault Foster or anyone for wanting to play in the big time. Best chance to get a championship ring. Tyrell Pryor would have been a dope to come to Pitt. Hopefully Narduzzi will change that so we once again get the once in a lifetime players, like Dorsett, Marino, and Green. We were lucky to have guys like Fitz, Revis Donald and Shady, as we are to have Boyd and Conner, now we need to get more of them and surround them with a better cast of characters.

Comment by gc 08.31.15 @ 6:32 pm

Meanwhile Boyd has been rated as top pro prospect on a few polls, and 1st or 2nd team pre-season All-American on a handful of teams … and Foster doesn’t even know if he as starting spot secured.

It may well be that Boyd was the better prospect all along, but an educated guess is that Foster has had some 2nd thoughts.

Comment by wbb 08.31.15 @ 6:35 pm

Foster needs to take advantage of an opportunity. They had their top 2 receivers go down to injury and he has a chance if he can hold off a true freshman. The larger issue and one that NOONE ever talks about is that the Saban’s and Meyer’s take care of their pipeline schools player’s before out of stater’s.

Urb never once says, let’s make the WPIAL Proud or Pennsylvania Proud! Nard should make that a point in all of his media opportunities before Franklynne does. That is a point that these local kids don’t ever consider. Like WVU and Miramar. Used to be like Pitt and Aliquippa! Pitt and Central Catholic.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 08.31.15 @ 7:09 pm

What worries me the most about the OL is that Jim Hueber isn’t coaching them. I think we overlook how good he was with our players.

We didn’t get to be 15th in the nation,in rushing with 254 ypg with a poor OL – we had a very good one last year and now we lost Rotheram & Clemmings and gained O’Neill & Herndon… I’ve a feel those two wouldn’t see the two deep at all this season if Hueber were still here.

John Peterson comes to us from…. Akron and before UAB.

I don’t like that trade off.

Comment by Reed 08.31.15 @ 8:55 pm

The big time football factories have tons of players with talent. It is difficult no matter how many stars you have to adjust to playing with that kind of talent. We need to keep the local talented kids and sprinkle them with outside talent over a period of time and we will have a winning record every year.

Comment by Frank MD 08.31.15 @ 9:00 pm

Reed. Agree, Hueber was a better OL coach. We shall see.

Comment by notrocketscience 09.01.15 @ 6:08 am

Don’t see how you can say Hueber was better, don’t we have to wait for results. Besides Hueber had NFL caliber talent to work with, Peterson has talent but we don’t know what he has to work with.

If Foster came to Pitt he would have Voytik throwing to him, whoever is the QB at Bama has to have a better arm than Chad.

Conveniently leaving out the 8 year run at Ohio State as recruiting coordinator…

He’s a 20 year vet with big time ties in Ohio. Let him operate before we call him to question.

@Comment by Grizzly1 09.01.15 @ 7:07 am

Boyd racked up 1,200 yards last year with Voytik throwing him the ball… arm seems fine to me.

Kid as all the arm required to be an effective college QB.

Comment by BostonsCommon 09.01.15 @ 8:20 am

BC:
It would be nice to see him use it to complete some deep passes, hopefully he has improved on that aspect this off season.
