Coleman Brings the Class to Ten

Sorry, despite being a Sunday night I was out for offline activities and couldn’t do this last night.

I won’t lie. That Therran Coleman had West Virginia, Wisconsin and Arizona State among his final five choices makes his decision to come to Pitt just a little more sweeter to me.

Coleman made the announcement on local Pittsburgh TV. Not too much drama to it.

Even though, Coleman waited until the end of August to make his verbal choice known, he’s known where he wanted to attend since July.

Plenty of connections to members of the Pitt team helped.

There is cornerback Dennis Briggs, who Coleman has trained with for years. And then two of his cousins, Lafayette Pitts and Jevonte Pitts, are defensive backs for the Panthers.

He played Little League baseball with freshman Dane Jackson. And he grew up down the street from junior defensive tackle Tyrique Jarrett.

Junior tight end Jaymar Parrish was in that neighborhood as well.

“Did I tell you I know Reggie Mitchell, too? I train with him.”

But it’s not just about being comfortable. Coleman’s relationships with Lafayette and Jevonte Pitts and Briggs and Mitchell and Jarrett and Jackson and Parrish – and more – have all given him a reliable perspective on the direction of Pitt’s football program under first-year head coach Pat Narduzzi.

“I talk to Dane and Dennis and Reggie a lot, and they’ve told me about what it’s like now,” Coleman said. “They said this staff is more amped up right now. Everybody is pumped up. They said it’s fun playing for Coach Narduzzi but since it’s college, it’s strict: you have to play within the defense. But they said the coaches break it down easy for them to understand it so they can learn it and play fast.”

Coleman is considered one of the best players in Pennsylvania and the defensive back will be playing cornerback at Pitt.

Brashear coach Rick Murphy has used Coleman in several areas, including defensive back, wide receiver and quarterback. He will play quarterback and cornerback this year, but Pitt is recruiting him as a defensive back.

“He can play at the line of scrimmage and press wide receivers,” Murphy said. “And he’s athletic enough to run with just about everybody.

“He is one of our main team leaders and pushes the other kids. He is a hard worker in the classroom, weight room and field and a good role model for younger kids if they want to do the things he can do.”

Somewhat surprisingly, Coleman is the first City League player to commit directly to Pitt (instead of transferring) since Corey Davis in 2004. He’s got a bit of a personality, as well.

Coleman is a consensus 3-star rated recruit. Perhaps, more importantly, he is a cornerback that fits  precisely what Head Coach Pat Narduzzi wants from his corners (Insider subs).

Is at his best in press or bail and playing leverage to the sideline. Positions himself well. Great job leveling off in zone schemes; reads the quarterback accurately and instinctively passes on targets and jumps threats.

…Can flip his hips in man-to-man and speed turn in zone schemes with little wasted motion; is smooth overall in transition and closes separation fast. Does a great job anticipating the pass and undercutting routes from his zone turns. Size and length to press effectively and win the 50/50 jump-ball. Ball skills are really polished and he is a threat to make a big play after the INT.

He’s the kind of corner they can put on an island. Which means more push by the defense up front. Really, really good fit for what the defense wants to be.

Pitt also just announced the script will be the official logo for ALL sports in 2016-2017. The AD said everyone wanted it so it was a no brainer. Colors will remain the same.

City schools not known for great coaching. Probably why 3 vs 4 stars. Has the raw tools.

Last year for block letter, Barnes giving the fans what they want. Could winning sports teams be next?

Some good news, Slim put on thirty lbs. No news on the alleged transfer.

I’m happy for all you guys that wanted the script, congrats, but let’s not ignore an entire decade of alum who wore gear with the block. I guess all my stuff will be the new throwback now.

Unfortunately, the fact that he is the first to City Leaguer to commit to Pitt since 04 is more of a statement of the state of city football than Pitt. There is simply not many assets afforded and would have to believe that the quality of coaching does not match what the more affluent suburban schools provide … although I don’t like to criticize the coaches who do put for the effort. I can remember the criticism when the city decided to re-turf Cupples Stadium some years back, even thought it is used by all of the city schools.

Cleveland has two gigantic Catholic school football factories where many of the urban footballers attend. This is common in most cities. Here, it seems that Central Catholic gets more players from the burbs than from within the city (I believe I am right but do not know for sure.)

Wondering if this buries the dinocat 6 ft under too? Sure hope so!

Examining the two deep roster for the home opener, I see that Peterman, Edwards and Scarpinato all listed, WHAT? I thought I read over the weekend that these guys brought in by Narduzzi to shore up some depth issues on the roster weren’t going to sniff the field this year and that they all were pretty impotent indicators of Nard Dawg’s recruiting prowess.

Can’t remember were I read that, can anybody help remind me what source was mistaken in this?

The old regime at Brashear used to funnel all of his top talent to wvu. Coach had ties to Nehlen & kept sending them under RichRod as well. Good to see the local boys staying home now. City schools don’t produce as much D1 talent as the suburbs, but they do have some players. I have worked residentially all over the South Hills & have seen better weight rooms in basements in USC & Bethel Park than what Brashear has. It’s definitely an uphill battle.

Rod Rutherford went to city school as did Curtis Martin. Tyrique Jarrett also but came to Pitt via prep school (or whatever). But it’s amazing the low number of city schoolers who are D1 prospects.

Said it before, but worth repeating. This is another solid pick up for the Pitt Panthers. Look, if you have a good set of skills and want to hunt, the Narduzzi influenced defense is the place for you.

Work hard young man and reap the benefits both on and off the field. Looks like we are starting to fill up on the 412. Could Gilbert be next on the dline and will his announcement have any affect on Robert Washington (4 star rb) and his recent de-committment from Syracuse?

Would also be good to get an update on George Hill(?) who verballed to OSU but is looking at Pitt and MSU as possible landing spots.

Look, the City League has shrunk over the years for sure. Pigskin is an expensive game to play & obviously budget constraints have hit extra curric’s hard. Clearly 2004 is a long time but prior to that Schenely, Peabody, Brashear, Langley, ‘house & Dice (HOF Curtis Martin) have had athletes matriculate to schools in conferences like the MAC & Patriot Leagues. This years is a little different with city talent sprinkled through several schools, including Central Catholic (which has always drawn well from Woodland Hills, Penn Hills & Pittsburgh Public) and to a lesser extent Shadyside Academy & Seton La. Rest assured generations old city based Pop Warner teams like the East End Crusaders (feeder to Central) & the Garfield squads (feeder to pittsburgh public) are alive and kicking.

City league kids get recruited to the suburban schools and private ones. Best city kids coming out of Central Catholic and Shady Side.

City League has provided players but there are problems – facilities, money, vast differences in enrollment, due to troubles in hood starting lineups vary greatly week to week. They are recruiting bases for Central and North. Coleman may be three star now but I agree City players are underdeveloped and underrated and he would probably be a 4 star at end of year – he does appear to be very fast. Welcome aboard. H2P

Nick – Ron Wabby Sr was the old coach at Brashear and his son is a protege of mine. Pitt never recruited the players that WVU went after, except for Major Harris. Pitt under our old regimes wanted nothing to do with City League coaches – they were not invited to clinics or camps. DW I believe was the first to do that. If you were a HS coach in the city you got your players whatever scholarships you could. Hopefully Nard Dog will change this anti local attitude and establish relationships with all schools. Wabby Sr. is retired and coaching HS in Florida which according to UPitt is the land of milk and honey. 🙂

4.56 40 in HS is pretty freakin fast. And his SPARQ rating of 87.75 is into the elite athlete range… probably the 97th percentile of athletes tested.

He has excellant raw tools. Just need Narduzzi, Conklin, and Hill to develop them.

tell the real truth about Wabby SR,he turn coaches away by under the table money from WVU . i know for a fact that those players where being recruited by Pitt . I was always wathing those tapes and attended all coaches meetings . so i know what was being told to coaches that recruiting that high school. Actually Curtis Martin was recruited hard by Pitt and he said he wouldn`t could to Pitt if coach gottfried was still coaching. that came out in one of our staff meetings from a great pitt recruiter that was an ALL-American at Pitt.

Comment by ricky ellison 09.04.15 @ 11:53 am

See i worked along side the Recruiting . i called them during evening hours after practice. then set-up their recruiting trips & visits for Home football games .so all of the high school game tapes i sorted them as they came in the office. I gave each position coach the list along with the Head coach. When it also came to high school coaches recieved an invite to all clinics i work along side the sec. to fold and stuff the letters for the DHLS driver to pick them up. i was the guy there in the evening at 6:00pm too give them too him. SO i think your sources of information don`t know what they`re telling you. How about investagating your resouces with an person that was hands on back then.

Comment by ricky ellison 09.04.15 @ 12:38 pm

hate to read things on here that is not the total truth . that`s how coaches throwed to the wolves. because writer`s seem to believe the first thing they hear and then print what they want it too say. Believe me i know first hand with PITTSBURGH sports writers. i had my share of stories written and everything i said wasn`t printed . IT was how that reporter wanted it to be read like. So if you want some true information about pitt football coaches from 1986-1991 . please feel free too contact me at ricky ellison @ellisonr063@gmail.com. i`m better known by ” Speck”
