PITTSBURGH—Three Pitt football players—offensive lineman Adam Bisnowaty, running back James Conner and quarterback Chad Voytik—were named to the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service.”

Named after former Florida Gators and NFL quarterback Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

In addition to being football standouts for the Panthers, Bisnowaty, Conner and Voytik rank among Pitt’s most active student-athletes when it comes to community service.

Bisnowaty (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), a junior offensive tackle, enters his third season as a starter and is a preseason candidate for the Rotary Lombardi Award (nation’s top lineman or linebacker). He is a two-time ACC All-Academic Football Team selection and also serves as vice president of Pitt’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Conner (Erie, Pa./McDowell) enters his junior season as one of the nation’s elite offensive players following an All-America campaign in 2014. Conner bulldozed his way to 1,765 yards and an ACC-record 26 touchdowns last year and was named the ACC Player of the Year. In addition to his many football awards, he was honored by the National Kidney Foundation with the “Small Hands Big Heart” Award for his volunteer work with the organization.

Voytik (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland) returns as the Panthers’ starting quarterback after throwing for 2,233 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore last season. He also finished second on the team with 466 rushing yards. Voytik, who served as a counselor at the famed Manning Passing Academy this summer, was a 2014 ACC All-Academic Football Team honoree.

The presentation of this year’s Wuerffel Trophy will take place at the 47th Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 12, 2016, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Wuerffel Trophy

Now I lay me down to sleep…

Here are the past winners.  Up until 2008 the statue was throwing a wobbly pass but before Tim Tebow would even consent to compete for the highly coveted trophy Tebow demanded the change to “The Prayer”.  His threat was that he would put a curse he learned to cast while on his missionary travels on the future winners.  As everyone in the NFL did also, Wuerffel caved in to Tebow’s magic.

Year Player Position School
2005 Rudy Niswanger C LSU
2006 Joel Penton DT Ohio State
2007 Paul Smith QB Tulsa
2008 Tim Tebow [5] QB Florida
2009 Tim Hiller QB Western Michigan
2010 Sam Acho DE Texas
2011 Barrett Jones OT Alabama
2012 Matt Barkley QB USC
2013 Gabe Ikard OL Oklahoma
2014 Deterrian Shackelford ILB Mississippi

But Wait!  Here is the inside scoop for how Tebow had the inside track.  I especially like this part:

“Among the topics Tebow discusses are: Anxiety; Being a Role Model; Belief; Biblical Role Models; Compassion; Controlling Emotions; Dealing with Critics; Decision-Making; Enjoying Life; Eye Black Scriptures; Faith; First Impressions; Fitness; God’s Sovereignty; Handling Fame; Hard Work; How to Improve America; Humility; Integrity; Learning from Failure; Living by Faith; Living with Passion; Most Important Thing in Life; Never Giving Up; Nutrition; Orphans; Preaching; Pride; Pushing Yourself to the Limit; Self-Discipline; Sexual Purity; Sharing the Credit; Spreading the Gospel; Staying Grounded; Supporting Teammates; “Tebowing”; Trash Talking; Victory; Visiting Suffering Fans and much more…”

“Orphans?”  Really?  Good God, how ‘much more’ could there be?

Oh, No!!  Look who won in 2007 – Toddy Graham’s QB at Tulsa!  Hey! Did Penny teach him that thing with his hand?

Todd Graham

Reed…you’ve outdone yourself…a pic of Fraud on The Blather.

Btw, I’d rather win 9 games this year and lose the Community Service award.

My god you have a picture of Graham flashing the “shocker”. Awesome. Penny must have went for a wild ride.

If you’re over 40 just google it…

Proud to be an alum.

Fraud is a decent coach but dirt as a human being. I hope that Sun Devil shoves a hot poker up his ass.

just like his Central Catholic teammate Bricen Garner, Shad Wheeler is announcing his college choice on KDKA on 8/10. Hopefully this is a good sign for Pitt

Well, if our country had a lot more Tim Tebows living in it I guarantee you we wouldn’t be in the decaying moral condition that we find ourselves in today. I would be a proud Father to have Tim Tebow as one of my sons (whom I’m all very proud of). H2P

Reed — great stuff…too funny. “…visiting suffering fans…”? That’s us baby! Tim, come visit Pitt fans and cheer us up!

Seriously, Coach Duzz should hire Tebow away from Philly for a day and ask him to give his @ss-kicking good fire-the-boys-up speech for the start of training camp.

I think Todd showed her the shocker after she drained a Golden Hurricane. Lucky Penny.

On a less debauched note, very cool to see some of Pitt’s best players are also some of their best guys. HTP!

Oh Reed, I’m not sure how I feel about you discussing christian superhero Tim Tebow while openly displaying Fraud flashing The Shocker. My mind is blown!

speaking of award watch lists

Sam Werner ? @SWernerPG
Just seeing now that the Biletnikoff Award watch list was released yesterday and Tyler Boyd isn’t on it. That’s, um, curious.
————————-

Apparently, the DUI charge had a big influence here … guess it’s better to be accused of rape

Comment by wbb 07.16.15 @ 6:58 am

… of course, if Boyd was pulled over by Tallahassee police, nobody would have likely known about it.

Comment by wbb 07.16.15 @ 7:26 am

If Biletnikoff hung around Stabler he likely had some DUI’s, but no one in Oakland wood arrest him.

Comment by gc 07.16.15 @ 7:41 am

Great to see Pitt players on watch lists. Chryst wasn’t all bad as some think. No defensive players on the list, however.

Was Aaron Donald on any pre-season watch lists?

How come winners only thank Jesus for his help?

Comment by gc 07.16.15 @ 7:48 am

Anyone else see that Peak is reporting that Whitehead will start out at safety and not corner?? That is surprising to me.

Comment by JJ 07.16.15 @ 8:52 am

Remember, we have a defensive HC now

Comment by wbb 07.16.15 @ 9:09 am

@ opitt – Being well over 40 I googled “the shocker”, WTF – I thought he was disguising the finger to Pitt. Blew up the picture and looks like a Sun Devil on his golf shirt – I hope. With you on him TX, good coach, horrible person.
@wbb thanks for the info on Shad Wheeler. One correction, if pulled over in Tallahassee, drunk, after raping or punching a woman he would be up for a Heismann. 🙂 I see their
QB said he was sorry to the woman he punched – case closed. TAllahassee justice

All that aside, nice honor to our athletes to be so honored.

Comment by rkb 07.16.15 @ 10:11 am

pittman – I think Tebow is a genuine guy but it is almost like he’s too perfect. Just poking fun at him.

Aaron Donald was on a million preseason award lists.

Comment by Reed 07.16.15 @ 10:39 am

wbb – Boyd is on this version of the list…

Comment by Reed 07.16.15 @ 11:21 am

Reed,
That was last years list

Comment by Panther Jim 07.16.15 @ 11:30 am

How can Tyler Boyd not be on the Biletnikoff list.

That is absurd.

He’s on the only player in ACC history to have back to back 1000 yard receiving in first two years as a fresh and soph.
