Breaking Six

I guess when you’ve been this consistently .500, even the gamblers will expect more of the same.

On Tuesday, 5Dimes, an offshore sportsbook, released its regular-season win totals for a large number of FBS teams. The group bestowed win totals upon all 14 ACC teams.

Below are the 5Dimes numbers with a short take on each school’s win total, and following is a quick over/under prediction. It’s worth noting 5Dimes’ win totals and money lines are designed to induce bets for both the over and under.

….

Pittsburgh: 6 (over -120, under -120)

Can the Panthers finally get past the six-win plateau? They have a new coach in Pat Narduzzi, which should pay immediate dividends on defense. The offense is poised to have a big season with playmakers Tyler Boyd and James Conner.

Jared Shanker: Push

Not sure anyone is going to believe Pitt gets more than 6 wins (or less than 6 losses, depending on how you see the water in the cup) in the regular season until it actually happens. And maybe not even then.

Reed – I have no doubt Peterman is coming in to compete for the starting job but expectations are very very low from the coaching staff that he’ll actually beat out the incumbent let alone push him much. Peterman will be an asset to the team just not on the field. He’ll be the guy to replace Voytik in case of injury but will be 3rd string on game days.

Dark Knight (I feel like i’m at a comic convention addressing you like this – lol) – You still haven’t told us what makes Peterman so special in your eyes? Yes, he put up some nice numbers in HS but he hasn’t shown any leadership qualities or the ability to handle duress is in college.

If you thought Savage, who played well enough to be drafted, was a deer in headlights I think you have some pretty unrealistic expectations of this kid who crumbled every time he was given an opportunity in TN.

I wish him well, but he’s already graduated and focused on furthering his education while getting to be part of a major college football program.

I think you mistake people defending Voytik as us saying he’s a potential all american. Hell, he’ll be lucky to sniff 3rd team All ACC by the end of his career. He is though, the best QB on the team. That’s the point we’re trying to make. You may not like that but that’s the reality. This staff will bring in better QB prospects but Voytik will finish out his career as our starter.

Once Chryst got comfortable with what Voytik could do, his numbers improved significantly from the beginning of the season to the end. He was a read option kid coming out of HS and forced into a pro-style offense. The transition was never going to be smooth.

Luckily, he has a coach now with a background in both and can really tailor an offense around him. If you watched any of the highlight film coming out of spring ball, you could see the ball really coming out well.

Disregard the Spring game – it was a sham. It was a super windy day and a mish mosh of 1st, 2nd and 3rd string guys who hadn’t practiced together because the teams were picked by two captains.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 05.31.15 @ 10:31 am

@ Tossing – C’mon now. Do you think for one minute that the coaching staff would say anything different about the incoming Peterman. My word. If they say he is coming in and is expected to start, they could very possibly lose this team because they would be inconsistent out of the gate with their message.

This is all about competition. Whoever wins, wins. At every position not just qb. Coaches need to create competition and this is how you do it. You don’t go run your trap about how the new guy coming in is expected to win the starting job. That is just stupid for the coaches long term success.

If you want to see how the psychology of sport is done from a coaches perspective, study Urb. He has an injured all everything qb coming back, a one loss qb coming back who set records, and a qb who won 3 games in a row off the bench with the last being the national championship. He has not named a starter because doing so now can rip a team apart. The battle will be won or lost in camp and it will be transparent. Anything less and the coach potentially loses the team. Plus, for URB, he has three other 4 stars competing at the qb position.

So let’s not say what we think we know. Let’s study the psychology of what is being said and how we motivate players. Narduzzi is setting the table for open competition. That is all we can hope for as fans. Let the best kid win the job whether it’s the first game, third game or 5th game. I want what is best for the team. This is precisely why the Steelers have struggled. Pollymolly, Taylor, Kiesel and Heath Miller lost skills but our HC acted as if they were still it. HC lost his ability to play the best players because of the politics. Politics always lose in sports.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 05.31.15 @ 10:55 am

dhuffdaddy – I expect an open competition. It’s highly unlikely Peterman wins the competition though and unlikely the coaching staff doesn’t expect him too. Maybe he’ll push Voytik a little bit.

Competition is good. I get that. That’s why the coaches are saying Voytik will have to compete. The coaches are saying all the right things. Every spot is up for grabs. Typical coach speak.

To remove an established leader with a season of experience behind him, where he showed progress to boot, however, is going to take one hell of a summer camp by Peterman. The same Peterman who struggled mightily in TN adapting to the college game and who already graduated and is on record as saying Pitt’s MBA program was a major reason along with Chaney in coming to Pitt.

Pitt had a gaping hole at backup QB. Peterman helps with depth immensely. It save Bertke from being tossed into real action too soon. Bertke gets mop up duty but if Voytik is injured for an extended amount of time Peterman gets the starts.

He’s a great addition for that fact but fans who expect him to rescue the QB situation have way too high of expectations.

We’re getting trolled again. This board, just like Pitt home games gets trolled by Pedo fans and not so much anymore….Hillbilly fans.

Ever notice at a Pitt home football game, if Pitt does something in the slightest wrong…there are immediately some boo’s emanating from the crowd.

Yes folks, being in a split city, with many many trolls who want Pitt to play poorly, not be good, etc….we are constantly being trolled by those that are not really Pitt fans at all.

So we must be on constant vigilance. Just a fact of life and the way it is !

Comment by Emel 05.31.15 @ 11:57 am

It would be utter insanity of any coaching staff to replace the QB of a team who avg’d….. 36.4 ppg….. .in their last 5 game of the previous year.

And one that was the #1 rated QB in ACC games.

@Tossing Thabeets

Good points and right on about the spring game. Remember 2 yrs ago Chad went berserk in the spring game. Completed like 80% of his passes for close to 400 yds and you seen in real games he had some real growing pains to deal with.

I hope Chaney doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel or be so hell bent on putting his stamp on the offense he screws with what works. I also like the fact his backround is diverse. I think a hybrid offense can work great in the college game.

I want the best guy to be the QB. But how can you not root for Chad. He is a good kid, smart, works his ass off, and has became a complete Pitt man thru and thru from friggin Cleveland, Tennessee.

Comment by Pap76 05.31.15 @ 12:27 pm

I’ll decipher those Peterman stats.

He was 20 for 40 for a grand total of 94 yards.

46.5 completion %

His Yards per attempt was 2.21 ypa.
His Yards per completion was 4.75 ypc.

Threw Zero TD’s and 2 Interceptions

Ran for 13 yards on 9 attempts for 1.4 yards per carry

His career QB rating is 56.55

This is not even 2nd string material. Let alone 1st string. And let alone when you have a kid who was the #1 rated QB in the ACC who led his team to a 36.4 ppg average over the last 5 games of the year.

Comment by Emel 05.31.15 @ 12:28 pm

Sorry…20 for 43 for a grand total of 94 yards.

Yea maybe he threw a long ball in practice without pads or defenders well.

But it obviously didn’t translate in a real game situation.

Comment by Emel 05.31.15 @ 12:30 pm

Comment by Emel 05.31.15 @ 12:33 pm

exactly Pap76

Spring games mean absolutely nothing. And you can draw into them whatever point your trying to make.

As Conner and Boyd played how much in the spring, how many yards did Conner run for ?

Spring games are about as meaningless as the Greentree Summer basketball league, where Joe Uchebo was All-World. Amassing double/doubles on a nitely basis and huge amounts of rebounds.

Comment by Emel 05.31.15 @ 12:37 pm

People are so hell bent on blaming the QB they will latch onto anything for hope. Peterman is not hope. If Peterman is the savior Pitt football is in trouble.

This isn’t a situation where the graduate transfer is competing against a freshman or a Russ Wilson is on the market. This is a guy that TN coaches watched throw only 4 passes in 3 series against Alabama and still decided they had seen enough of him as a D1 starting QB. 3 series and TN knew he wasn’t going to cut it. Some will say that they didn’t give him enough time but I disagree. Sometimes you just know what you have and in order to protect he kid and the team they pulled him.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 05.31.15 @ 12:45 pm

Here’s an article from about a year ago on Tenn. QB positon hopefuls.

Peterman is briefly mentioned and it says he was thinking of transferring even then.

dhuffdaddy,
Just curious. Were the old guys (Stones) still able to put on one heck of a show last night in the Burg? I saw them in 1970 at the Civic Arena with Stevy Wonder fronting them. Unbelievable showman.

Comment by pittman4ever 05.31.15 @ 1:29 pm

So guys like Grigsby and Bradley will explode this year, but Voytik will implode?

No offense to these guys but Grigsby and Bradley are a fifth year and true senior, with very few starts for a reason. I don’t care how good a coach Narduzzi is, guys can either shed blockers and put guys on the ground or they can’t. Case in point, Aaron Donald was going to get his tackles no matter who the coach was.

Grigsby wasa highly recruited linebacker who they had to create a position for, cause he couldn’t beat out the guys in front of him, who weren’t very good by the way.

By the same token, shouldn’t Voytik be better with a better coach this year?

Comment by gc 05.31.15 @ 2:43 pm

I sure hope Black Knight is right but Galambos, Grigsby and Bradley is not a line-backing corps that will scare anyone. When you add our weak D-ends, let’s hope Narduzzi is the genius that he is made out to be.

Comment by gc 05.31.15 @ 2:52 pm

Emel, stop trying to confuse us with the facts, LOL.

Comment by gc 05.31.15 @ 2:56 pm

The facts are that Pitt is in a much better place with a new Chancellor, new AD and new Coach. Not my opinion. Just the facts based on results I have seen thus far. I know a turd when I see one. Previous coaches, admin and leadership floated. These new guys sink to the bottom.

Comment by TX Panther 05.31.15 @ 3:06 pm

I had written a while back that ACC per school revenue would look dwarfish compared to other Power 5 conferences. Well, that statement was incorrect.

According to ESPN, the SEC and Big Ten have a huge revenue distribution advantage per school over the ACC, PAC 12, and Big 12.

BTW, does anyone know what the ACC distribution is?

Comment by Tony77019 05.31.15 @ 3:34 pm

hey pittman, Mick Jagger still has it, for a 71 year old. More showman and entertainer versus singer now. A middle aged woman tossed her bra at him and candidly….he looked confused as to what it was for a second! Bob Seger led off, followed by Kid Rock. The Stones played the classics of course and did really well in my opinion. It was actually the first time I had seen them live.

My sense is that they may have one more go around in them due to age, but the band still sounded great. Keith Richards received the loudest applause it seemed. It was so loud, I couldn’t hear squat other than the music.

This qb mumbo jumbo is nonsense. May the best qb win the job and may the best center win the job. May the best linemen win the job and may we find some difference makers on defense..fast! Need turnovers this year.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 05.31.15 @ 4:04 pm

Biggest threat to SEC and BIG is cable going to a choice or cafeteria based system. If that trend continues look for major changes in the sports scene. Do you really think people will opt for that programming if not forced to take it as part of a package.

Comment by JoeKnew 05.31.15 @ 4:19 pm

A la carte is where it has been going for years. I think it will actually benefit the consumer. Would you pay 5 dolla to watch the Panthers play from the comforts of your home?

Cable companies are betting you will. Right now, they are trying to figure out what you get with that purchase (i.e. red zone coverage for other games, etc.). Will be interesting in 3-4 years.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 05.31.15 @ 4:28 pm

So what incentive is it to actually attend games in person then. Need to start thinking about how watching a game at the stadium can be similar yet better than watching the game at home.

And the ACC is still better than the Big Least. Thank you BC.

Comment by TX Panther 05.31.15 @ 4:44 pm

Yup, where the consumers are getting screwed paying for BIG and the conference getting .50 per house, how many will willingly opt for it? Sure the alum and some others but not all as it is currently. They will take a big hit financially and loose attendance in the process. Beware the almighty dollar!

Comment by JoeKnew 05.31.15 @ 5:08 pm

Dark Knight – you really have a H^rd On for the bomb, don’t you? I like the long completition, too. But, out of every 3 downs I’d MUCH prefer a 1st down, to a long throw.

Emel: you’re the stat man. What is the completition % on throws over 25 yards? Is such a stat kept?

DK, I’ll give you one thing about Chad that definitely does need to improve before YSU – his ability to go thru his progressions. Last year his eyes seemingly stayed on his primary receiver virtually until he threw the ball – way too many times. Although, when you look at his completition %, it is amazing that he completed so many passes – especially when his primary receiver was double covered most of the time. Tells me he must be remarkably accurate – and/or his primary receiver is remarkably gifted!

The ability to go thru one’s progressions is not given at conception – it must be learned. It is kind of surprising that HCPC did not get this done with Chad in the 2 years he had him. I’m sure this is something Chaney is/has been working on.

I look for a lot more throws to secondary and tertiary receivers this year. I’m sure TB will be up to his neck in alligators (DBs) all year.

Comment by Savannah Panther 05.31.15 @ 6:05 pm

I know nothing. I’m a college football fan. That’s all. If some of you didn’t see Voytik develop into a decent to good college football quarterback as the season progressed, you really mystify me.

I thought it was pretty obvious.

There is absolutely no quarterback controversy at Pitt, only in the minds of a few fans.

If Peterman comes out in fall ball and looks like Marino, so be it. I don’t know either of them personally, so i’m cheering for the kid that can help Pitt get the most wins.

Unless something spectacular happens in camp, there is no controversey what so ever.

Comment by Dan 05.31.15 @ 6:26 pm

I might add, his first year as a starter.

Comment by Dan 05.31.15 @ 6:27 pm

I just Googled Peterman, someone can verify this, I know the internet is not always right,

He’s only 6’2″ ?????

I know that’s taller than Voytik, but after reading some posts, I thought I was gonna see 6’4″ or 6’5″ ????

Comment by Dan 05.31.15 @ 6:33 pm

Dan – exactly. I think Peterman was an inch taller and 30 lbs heavier coming out of HS. Peterman played in a passing offense and Voytik ran the read option. Voytik in Graham’s offense, in what would going into year 4 of that regime, would have been nasty.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 05.31.15 @ 6:43 pm

The defense will dictate the season! If we are as bad as last year it will be another .500 season! But if Nardball works and we improve, especially on the pass rush, we could get to 8-9 games! This QB controversy is killing me! Chad starts, end of story! Give the rock to Conner and Boyd and sprinkle in everyone else!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 05.31.15 @ 7:05 pm

If the $3 billion slush fund you are referring to is Pitt’s endowment, that isn’t a “slush fund.” Endowment money can’t be spent- for anything. There is no access to the money. It is invested to make money. What endowments are for is generating interest that can provide revenue year after year. Interest earned is the only money accessible from an endowment. That interest money (at many schools, I can’t speak for Pitt) goes to things like scholarships and research. Our chancellor isn’t sitting on a throne made out of stacks of cash from our $3 billion slush fund laughing at how how stupid we all are.

Voytik had good stats and the offense really started to gel at the end of the year. More proof that Chryst guy is a damn good OC. 🙂

You can have Tom Brady as QB, with his deflated balls, and he will suck without a good OL. I will take the continued recruiting of top offensive linemen every year over a top QB. Narduzzi has to keep that going.

Obviously, the best scenario is to have both.

Kanyon40… Thanks for the enlightenment on the use of the endowment fund. if 1% of the interest of that fund could be put towards and on campus stadium each year… Which my calculations show that would be 30 million a year… It wouldn’t take too long to Long to cover the cost of the stadium.just a thought… Just dreaming

Here’s a thought. Use the endowment as collateral to float a nearly free $200M Bond. Money is so cheap right now, so it would make terrific sense to do that. It is the responsible way of making things work if you want to commit to such a thing.

Universities are big business and that is one of the reasons governmental funding is drying up. To offset this issue, Universities are monetizing and commercializing technology more now than ever. So to answer, there is plenty of money available. The question is whether the Chancellor wants to contribute funds for the maximization of the collegiate experience for our athletes…and candidly, our students. Get them engaged while students and they will give back to the large endowment later.

Sitting at the bar in the United Club at Ohare Airport. Struck up a conversation with the guy sitting next to me….went to Nebraska, is from the same home town as SP…the family is hated, he more than anyone. When he fired Solich he did not have a replacement in mind. Screwed up the athletic program, he said he cannot believe how SP screw d up the football program at Pitt. He also thought Pelini would still be the HC if he were not an abrasive, raving idiot.

May have been mentioned before, Tre Tipton is AA State Champ Long Jumper. The kid is an athlete.

Hope Narduzzi is aware of Knoch’s Jordan Geist State Champ Shot Put and Discus as a sophomore.
Not sure he plays football but obviously very strong and athletic.

Heard there was a prospect camp, maybe yesterday, any reports?

As I said before it doesn’t matter all that much but when you see the two together Peterman is a few inches taller. There is no “QB controversy” except for the one fact that there will be an actual competition to start at the position in fall camp and that hasn’t happened in over ten years at PITT.

BTW – Nate Peterman is also “Our Guy” as much as Chad Voytik or any other player on the roster is. I think its being overlooked that Peterman was offered by some big time schools when he declared his transfer intentions… and then even bigger schools after he verballed to PITT.

Here is an interview with him…he doesn’t mentioned the names but I was told they were plum colleges to play football at. I think we are lucky to get him in whatever role he fills.

I guess we can take a poll but I think Voytik starts against YSU as does almost every PITT fan but Dark Knight.

@gc

As usual, Jerry DiPaola actually covers things that the PP-G does not even mention. Here is his report from Saturday’s camp. Linda

I think that Dark Knight is legitimately one of us. Just like my buddy Upitt, he can get his shorts all twisted up at times.

Thanks pmd, hopefully we get some of those guys.

I am fine with Dark Knight as well, he is certainly passionate about his opinions and started a good debate, in an otherwise uneventful time.

I agree with Reed, both of these guys are our guys and we have them for two years which solidifies the QB position much better than it has been for years. I also agree with Dark Knight that an elite QB would be awesome, hopefully Chaney can convince one to come in the near future.

Our QB’s have been amazingly durable if nothing else over the last 5 years, when you look at Ohio State last year it shows how important it is to have quality depth at the position.

While I think it is Voytik’s job to lose, I am interested to see the long balls that Dark Knight says are coming.

Remember Peterman played on a terrible team, much like Savage, in the SEC not the ACC.
I cannot see Voylick starting anywhere in the SEC

Yea I can see Voytik starting at Vandy and Tenn…off the top of my head.

And since he finished #1 in the ACC in conf games ahead of Jameis Winston, I’m sure there would be several other SEC teams he would start on.

Comment by Emel 06.01.15 @ 3:56 pm

Savage’s Rutgers team that year was 9-4, so it wasn’t terrible.

Man you are lost. lol

Comment by Emel 06.01.15 @ 3:58 pm

The point is Voylick would not take a snap for any SEC team or be recruited by any SEC team, which he wasn’t.

+’s: QB play, offensive big time playmakers, solid O Line with chance to be maulers. D backs on upswing.
-‘s: D Line is thin and talent challenged. LB’s same as D line. Pass rush will depend on schemes.
+/-‘s: kicking game. Blewitt matured? Punting? Risk Boyd on returns?
Coaching is expected to be better than before. PN now has to manage entire game. Is he a headset coach or a leader of men?
Fan base: crowds mean something in CCB, but we are on the road for 3 of first 4. Road wins demand maturity .
The task before Pitt is to minimize mistakes on offense. Avoid disasters in kicking game, minimize big plays on D. Best thing about road games is fewer players make it easy to manage.
Summer camp OSTENSIBLY is about competition, but I hope it is focused on weeks 1-4.
I will take the over.
But I’m a fan.
