Titus Howard Gone

According to sources closer to the program than me,  CB Titus Howard has been dismissed from the team.

Apparently he didn’t learn from last year’s full-season suspension.  Will add more info as it comes in.

UPDATE: From wbb @ 3:26 below:

“Trey Anderson, Devin Cook, Connor Hayes and Luke Maclean have left the #Pitt football team and Titus Howard has been dismissed.

Ugh…sad that he didn’t learn from last year’s suspension.

Moved up to the “next four out” with Lunardi.

I think we win out and get ONE win in the ACC tourney OR go 3-1 and then win 2 in the ACC and we then get to lose the first weekend.

Comment by TVax 02.23.15 @ 10:54 am

This is a bummer.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 02.23.15 @ 11:03 am

UCLA & Illinois are both listed as among the last 4 in with Lunardi and both schools have lost their last 2 games.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 02.23.15 @ 11:10 am

Looks like Jordan Whitehead will be given a great opportunity to play early and be a star.

Anyone know the spread for tomorrow night’s game?

Comment by pmdH2P 02.23.15 @ 11:32 am

NC State is in his ‘last 4 in’.

They play at UNC tomorrow. So hopefully they lose.
Then they finish with BC, Clemson and Syracuse.

Pitt’s gonna need to win out, but at least we’re back in the conversation, because as recently as 10 days ago Pitt wasn’t even on Lunardi’s radar.

Comment by Emel 02.23.15 @ 11:34 am

This is sadder news for Howard than it is for Pitt, which, unlike a year ago, seems to be well stocked at DB next year. Nontheless, he does have talent and experience, and will be missed to a certain extent.

I would think Howard will one day look bcak in regret. Here is a kid who was thown into the lineup as afrosh well before he was ready, and showed some promise.

Best of luck to him; he will probably need it.

Comment by wbb 02.23.15 @ 11:40 am

I get the other 3 Clairton kids confused all the time.
ikr.

Which one is left besides Boyd ?

Don’t believe this one played this past season, so he would have had that going for him next season. That is……not being exposed to OutHouse. Too bad we could have used the depth.

Comment by Emel 02.23.15 @ 11:56 am

Emel – Terrish Webb is the other Clariton player along with Boyd who are left on the roster. We need to keep both as Webb was one of our starting Safeties.

Comment by Reed 02.23.15 @ 12:12 pm

Off topic but PSU’s dance-a-thon raised over 13 million, Pitt’s raised $150,000. If that is the ratio for alumni support, says a lot about football attendance, booster money for football etc.

Comment by gc 02.23.15 @ 12:23 pm

Howard is another great example of why you need depth. Behavior of college kids is unpredictable. They can be their own worst enemy. Too bad, the kid had talent. Probably end up at WVCC.

Comment by gc 02.23.15 @ 12:25 pm

It doesn’t make a lot of sense to sit out a whole year under suspension & then transfer. Unless he moves down he will sit for another year. It hurts with depth, but they should still be in better shape than they were going in to last season at cb.

Comment by Nick 02.23.15 @ 12:27 pm

GC – State Penn has been doing the Dance-a-thon for years & years. They have the largest in the country.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 02.23.15 @ 12:31 pm

@@@@@

All the best to Howard. Stay in school.

Comment by JR 02.23.15 @ 12:36 pm

Count down to 5. Need five wins to get in.

I think they get to four and have their bubble burst on selection Sunday.

Haven’t seen a line yet on the BC game, guessing pitt -10.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 02.23.15 @ 12:57 pm

Good luck to Titus. I don’t know the specifics but if it was academics the young man needs to be in an arena where he can compete..I wanted to be an MD and learned very quickly that organic chemistry at Pitt would kick my ass..hopefully, his dismissal wan’t a character issue.

Comment by BigB 02.23.15 @ 1:00 pm

current line is pitt -9/110

So here’s a tip for those of you inclined to place a wager on the game, when I make a pick, GO THE OTHER WAY!

I have been wrong on every single one of my pitt picks. Everyone, literally 0-8.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 02.23.15 @ 1:35 pm

Sorry should be “every one”.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 02.23.15 @ 1:35 pm

BigB, HaHa, from what I heard, organic chemistry has done many a good man in. One of my roommates was sweating up until he got his final grades .. wasn’t sure he would be able to graduate on time.

Now he is at a VP level of a large corp.

There has been 5 Clairton players at Pitt these past few years. One was a WR who is graduating (hopefully) this spring. Trenton Coles left last summer, and now Howard is leaving. Boyd and Webb, who I thought played very well as a soph safety before being injured remain.

The reason I say this is thatthere are tow prety good prospects at Clairton for 2016 (I think). One is RB Lamont Wade and the other is 4-star WR Aaron Mathews who, among others, is being pursued by PSU and OSU.

I would hope that Clairton remains a pipeline school like a few other area schools that seem to turn out good prospects regularly.

Comment by wbb 02.23.15 @ 1:54 pm

Nick, it isn’t a transfer situation with Howard. He was kicked off the team.

Comment by Reed 02.23.15 @ 2:33 pm

Clairton is ranked 454 out of 459 school districts in pa. A big reason why kids will struggle in college. Clairton should have been merged long ago to give these kids a better educational opportunity. PA provincial politics.

Chris Peak ?@PantherLair
Official: Trey Anderson, Devin Cook, Connor Hayes and Luke Maclean have left the #Pitt football team and Titus Howard has been dismissed.

Comment by Mailman 02.23.15 @ 3:24 pm

Ok, the folowing is a tweet from Chris Peak, Pantherlair:

Official: Trey Anderson, Devin Cook, Connor Hayes and Luke Maclean have left the #Pitt football team and Titus Howard has been dismissed.
—————————-

Thus, yes .. Maclean has indeed left. We knew about Cook and Anderson, and Hayes was an OL where we are well stocked.

This is the usual attrition that seems to happen annually.

Comment by wbb 02.23.15 @ 3:26 pm

Lamont Wade is in the ’17’ class & will be one of the top 5 in PA.

Comment by Nick 02.23.15 @ 3:26 pm

well, mailman has delivered! Snow, cold, ice, etc.

Comment by wbb 02.23.15 @ 3:27 pm

MacLean and Hayes both from the state of Michigan if my memory serves me correctly.

Comment by BigB 02.23.15 @ 3:41 pm

Looks like Whitehead has already moved up the depth chart. Too bad he didn’t enroll in January.

Comment by gc 02.23.15 @ 3:46 pm

Pat Kugler from the Burgh is a 2nd teamer at Michigan.

Comment by BigB 02.23.15 @ 3:47 pm

BigB, you are correct .. maybe they’re Wisc bound

Comment by wbb 02.23.15 @ 3:58 pm

I don’t think the departures are a big deal at all. Trey might actually want to play somewhere for at least 1 season. And both he and cook already have their degrees.

Hayes is buried on the depth chart, by larger, more talented and athletic linemen… And whenever the new coach is bringing a juco in at your position, the writing is pretty clearly written on the wall.

Comment by BostonsCommon 02.23.15 @ 4:04 pm

Maclean and Cook hurt because of the position they play which is thin on numbers and talent .. Cook has made some plays and still not sure about Maclean, talent wise

Comment by wbb 02.23.15 @ 4:07 pm

Well, I did it.

I renewed my football tickets for next year – took advantage of the new, 5-payment deal. There was no penalty.

But I can’t escape this feeling that I’m Charlie Brown about to kick the ball that Lucy promises she’ll hold, this time, one more time …

So many years – Pitt has found so many ways to disappoint me.

Oh well, Hail to Pitt!

Comment by 17YearsatPitt 02.23.15 @ 4:11 pm

In the new version, Charlie Brown kicks Lucy’s head clean off instead of the ball. It goes through the uprights and Charlie gets his revenge.

@ 17yearsatpitt – you may have the greatest user name ever. I’m changing mine to ’50shadesofmustardyellow’.

Comment by Reed 02.23.15 @ 5:56 pm

~ Tex…..Charlie must have been properly setup in the middle of the field for that attempt.

Which also negated him becoming a ‘headcase’.

Comment by Emel 02.23.15 @ 6:11 pm

TX Panther-good one.
BigB-Organic chem wasn’t the toughest subject for this pharmacy grad. The mandatory language requirement (which is no more) kicked my ass. I almost failed 1st year French for 2 years. I finally figured out that the requirement was satisfied by registering, not by attending class so I withdrew. I hated French so much, it took me 35 years to visit Paris.

Comment by OhHowIHateOhioState 02.23.15 @ 6:13 pm

How do these leavings affect our scholarship numbers? Maybe we can still get some kids.

Comment by Frank MD 02.23.15 @ 6:30 pm

@OHIHateOSU and trying to fit I had to take a foreign language and a science achievement test. I applied one Pitt was still private university… Had four years of Russian in high school and a great physics teacher but they fired our high school chemistry teacher halfway through the school year and I got a study hall for eight weeks before having chemistry again for the last six or eight weeks. Have had a great career as a physical therapist…@Reed… Great phucking handle…Royal blue whips and chains I hope

Comment by BigB 02.23.15 @ 7:00 pm

Comment by Erie Express 02.23.15 @ 7:14 pm

Howard was a talent who had the physical ability to really develop into a good CB. He likely will not really become the player his talent indicated he could become.

Rooting for Kansas State tonite over KS.

Comment by Frank MD 02.23.15 @ 8:05 pm

BigB …math kicked my ass at Pitt. If they hadn’t dropped the calc requirement, I would not have graduated.

. Conversely, I took french from 4 th grade on hating every second of it, but took it all 4 years at Pitt. Not only did it save my GPA’s ass but it helped get me a terrific job as a liaison between the USA and. Canadian divisions of my printing company. Saw all of Eastern Canada…..coldest I’ve ever been
Plus, the French teachers at Pitt were young, gorgeous and from France or French speKing countries. I was always in the front row in class as most of them wore very short skirts!!

A shame about Howard. Wish him well.

Ga Tech beating LVille by 8. L vile is done after dismissing Chris Jones today.

Comment by Dan 72 02.23.15 @ 8:23 pm

Not sure how GT win over Louisville affects us. We beat GT at home.

Comment by Frank MD 02.23.15 @ 8:39 pm

Affects us very little. What affects Pitt more is losing any of its last 4 games.

Comment by TX Panther 02.23.15 @ 8:58 pm

What an epic fail by GT.

Comment by Nick 02.23.15 @ 9:05 pm

So Pitino certainly knew about domestic violence issues with Chris Jones since Jones was suspended for their game at Syracuse. Before anything was specifically reported in the media, Pitino reinstated him in time to play 36 minutes against Miami to snap their two-game losing streak. Then Jones is finally kicked off the team for good once reports of his conduct circulate in the media. Not surprising to see Syracuse and now Louisville act in their own self-interest while ostensibly “doing the right thing.”

Comment by Brian 02.23.15 @ 9:19 pm

Coach Duzz is going to have himself a full recruiting class of 25 when all is said and done.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 02.23.15 @ 9:58 pm

@Brian, do you know the situation with Jones as you state it? Not a Louisville fan whatsoever, but I think there is only so much the team/coach can know and do as personal problems may occur with players.
For me, the Syracuse attempt to be their own judge and jury and determine their fate is far worse a problem. And I’d add that I actually like/liked Boeheim. It does make me appreciate what I read from the story someone linked to recently(a thread or two ago) about a quote from JD during his hiring.

Comment by TVax 02.23.15 @ 11:00 pm

@TVax, just saying the timing seems awfully fishy. On a more positive note, looks like Pitt just picked up another top 100 win, as Kansas State’s win over Kansas will certainly vault them into the top 100.

Comment by Brian 02.23.15 @ 11:13 pm

At Louisville, after a ton of disciplinary action over Jones
Mistreating his girlfriend ( think Ray Lewis) he had been on very good behavior to get reinstated by Pitino. Then yesterday he evidently just lost his mind with her on Twitter and threatened her. That was it for Pitino….. And Jones

If that’s the surface story .., you can imagine the real story.

Comment by Dan 72 02.23.15 @ 11:22 pm

Meant Ray Rice and he also put it in an email
…, think idiot!

Comment by Dan 72 02.23.15 @ 11:26 pm

K St beats Kansas and it’s not a shock. Yes it’s the same K St team we beat by 23.

The Big 12 is WAY over rated and it will show come tourney time. None of them have beaten anyone of note outside of their conference. Seriously look at their schedules. They score a lot of points so the media loves them.

While I’m ranting this:

“Jay Bilas and other ESPN college basketball analysts want to be able to tell you who should make it. To that end, they asked the ESPN Analytics Department to help them. What we created is this, the College Basketball Power Index, or BPI for short.”

BTW ESPN’s BPI index is dog sh-t. We sit @ 77 and G Tech yes the 12 & 15 G Tech is #69?? Seton Hall who lost 9 of their last 11 games is 62?? Arizona State is # 59 and Minnesota is #50

It’s so complicated that it is flat out wrong and they should be ashamed.

Winning isn’t all that important in the BPI index and that’s the only place it won’t matter.

What player/s was or wasn’t playing when you won/lost?

Scoring Margin, Pace of game, blow out??? How does any of that matter????

Survive & advance is what you hear you need to do to win the tourney. Pace of Game, blow out???

ESPN can blow it out their a–

We are on the bubble because how the team played in the middle of the season.

ESPN pundits talking about how awesome the Big 12 is and that we don’t belong on the bubble because ESPN’s low BPI score isn’t helping any.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 02.23.15 @ 11:42 pm

Big win for K-State and for Pitt tonite.

K-State was #103 in RPI and they beat Kansas, who was #1 in RPI. So they will move up considerably, which will give Pitt another Top 100 win.

Currently Pitt sits at #36 in RPi.

On the recruiting front, Cheick Diallo has Pitt in his Final 5. Looks like we’re a darkhorse in that according to the experts, but I doubt they would tell us if we were the frontrunner. Just because.

Comment by Emel 02.24.15 @ 2:46 am

Tony. do you know what has an impact on BPI? Margin of victory. So losing a half dozen of games by less than 5 may be better than losing 4 by >10.

Comment by wbb 02.24.15 @ 7:15 am

So, the KSU fans storm the court and the KU players are expected to maintain their cool? That is expecting a lot of a kid in that kind of a situation.

Makes me even more proud of the Zoo.

H2P

Comment by pmdH2P 02.24.15 @ 8:10 am

agree pmdH2P, the Zoo expects Pitt to win its home games so court storming is not an option.

Comment by wbb 02.24.15 @ 8:51 am

wbb there are so many factors figured into the BPI that it becomes useless.

Comment by Hank the Tank 02.24.15 @ 1:32 pm

I believe Maclean was a pretty highly thought of recruit so sorry to see it didn’t work out — as with Howard…for different reasons apparently.

Reed, I think you and I were the only ones on the site the past 3-4 years who thought Anderson was any good…maybe UPittbaseball too. It seemed his size was held against him but I sure would have liked to see him get 2-3 straight games to prove himself instead of a few snaps every month or so. He looked like a player when healthy and nobody confused Tino, Savage, or Voytik for All-Americans….doubt he would have done worse than 6-6 like the others. Oh well, hope he gets a shot somewhere this season, even if at a D2 school, as he was a good soldier for Pitt.

Comment by Matt N. 02.24.15 @ 2:29 pm

Special on local TV in Johnstown Pa. tonight 10 yrs. and no Center County District Attorney Ray Gricar, only a laptop and car. Known; he was very upset about being critisized for prosecuting and for not prosecuting. That thread seems linked to Sandusky situation .Local(Belfonte) police did not bring PASP in for about 3 yrs. after occurrance. It still smells.

Comment by Pitt 60 02.24.15 @ 7:08 pm

Sorry yo see 2 DE’s lost. Hope the new coaches have something up their sleeve to mitigate loss before next class. Also saw Anderson play against Iowa one touchdown, one int., play looked smooth and confident. See Mark Meyers supposed to go possibly top ten in draft— oh well another good Qb recruited and botched by Pitt. Hope those days are over.

Comment by Pitt 60 02.24.15 @ 7:16 pm

Pitt 60, apparently not. Narduzzi must have given the ok to release Anderson and didn’t evidently try too hard to convince him to stay…still pissed that Meyers never got a shot to compete with nepoTino.

In retrospect, Joe Flacco would have looked good flinging the pill in the blue & gold, but I always liked Palko and we can’t argue about his production on some fairly limited teams. Anderson should go to an Ivy school for grad work and get a chance to light up their schedule, or maybe a place like Central Michigan or Toledo…on second thought, he’d probably put up Gradkowski numbers vs Pitt, so maybe a place far far away.

Comment by Matt N. 02.24.15 @ 9:47 pm

Another fine tradition of guys Pitt rejected — Gradkowski, Marc Bulger, Troy Nunes, who lit us up…probably some other good ones folks can think of. Man, other than Walt, who was the last Pitt coach who could pick and manage QBs well? I guess Sherill.
