Open Thread: Armed Forces Bowl

Pitt-Houston. Interim coaches all around.

Noon start on a Friday on ESPN. Hope you took an extra day off from work. That or you are like me trying desperately to get the work done as early as possible and get home just in time.

Pat Narduzzi will be on hand for the game. He was asked after the Cotton Bowl, and made it clear that he would be attending.

For fans of both programs, the game itself has taken a backseat to the coming changes.

But for one time this season, there is still an actual game to watch. To see what James Conner can do to an opposing defensive line. To see what kind of amazing catches Tyler Boyd can produce.

To have one last chance to complain about Matt House’s defense.

Does anyone think we are going to win a basketball game today?

Pitt Blather. aka: Pitt Support Group. No pride and no discipline. How does PN address this situation? Does he tell the team exactly what he thinks or is he diplomatic. If he is diplomatic does that make him appear weak? (maybe weak is the wrong word) Right now I think he needs to tell the team how the bear $@!# in the woods and let the chips fall where they may

Comment by DC33 01.03.15 @ 10:42 am

GC, I remember the Pitt come from behind 36 to 35 win over West Virginia. In that game we trailed WVU 35 to 6 at halftime. Of course that comeback took a half not a quarter. They ran head coach Bobby Bowden out of Morgantown after that loss.

Comment by Justinian 01.03.15 @ 10:43 am

Justinian, there have been a few go our way, they feel great when they do. But we have been the most generous in providing our opponents with those feel good moments.

Comment by gc 01.03.15 @ 10:47 am

@gc, thank you.

No, no I don’t see them winning.

I hope I am completely wrong.

If we win, it will pump me up for the season.

If we lose, it will be just what I thought.

I really hope I have to eat my words, would love nothing more.

Comment by Dan 01.03.15 @ 10:52 am

GC – that was The Waterboy.

Comment by JLE 01.03.15 @ 10:52 am

Some have written that in this era of fast strike, high scoring offense, that defense does not matter.

While there may be no such thing as shut down defense anymore, I think great defense is still what makes the great teams. The SEC has had had the biggest, strongest, fastest D-lines and linebackers for the last ten years. You have to have D-backs that can cover, intercept, and make open field tackles.

I have been whining for two years that we have not been recruiting any stand-out defensive players, especially d-ends and linebackers.

That is why I am pleased that we have one of the best defensive coaches in the country coming to Pitt.

Comment by gc 01.03.15 @ 10:56 am

The interesting thing was that the defense played very well for three quarters and we did have three sacks and eight tackles for loss, some of the best play of the year. But when it counted most….

Comment by gc 01.03.15 @ 11:01 am

I think it’s ironic that our 4 most unlikely wins in memory came at the hands of WVU (actually, one was a tie) … while we pretty much have had a history of unlikely losses against the rest of the universe.

The Ray Vinopal quote is hysterical. As he says that, i have a flashback to coaching 7 and 8 yer old kids in baseball. You know, the kid in the outfield picking his nose and watching the butterflies, not focused on the game and the ball gets hit by the batter and rolls right past the fielder as he is thinking about how the butterfly stays airborne. That in a nutshell is Vinopal and the defensive coaching staff. Why were they thinking about anything other than to stay in the present and completing your assignment on each play. This isn’t about teaching your player’s how to win. This is about replacing player’s with those that can focus on the task for 60 minutes. I will repeat as I have for two years. If Ray Vinopal sees the field as a Safety, your defense is terrible. That quote is priceless. Almost as good as the midseason quote where he said the player’s were out of position all game! He was in that backfield.

Lewis was another one I noticed out there just singing and dancing while the game was going on. I do have to give kudos to the kid that caught the 4th and 13 for a touchdown as he slid out of the end zone. That, was a great catch in a critical situation.

Boyd kneed the guy in the shoulder/chest and should have been flagged for the infraction, but wasn’t. It would have cost us the game, but instead the drop was the final dagger!

Attention, all incoming freshmen on defense. You have an opportunity to start for us as true freshman. When does spring practice start?

Comment by dhuffdaddy 01.03.15 @ 11:40 am

As crazy as it sounds, any chance that House decided to sabotage Pitt heading out the door?

Comment by PittPT 01.03.15 @ 11:42 am

FWIW – WR Jennings never saw the field yesterday. Not even on the two on-side kicks. I’m sorry, but HCPN needs to rid Pitt of all coaches that participated in that disasterous 4th qtr yesterday. If for no other reason, to send a message to the players that we don’t play that way ANYMORE!

HCPN has an easier task now – stay with me – he only needs to prepare his game plan and players to beat YSU and Akron. Any other team we play next year will be an expected loss after yesterday. HCPN doesn’t have to reveal this strategy to the public, but it sure does lower expectations and make his job easier.

I believe HCPN will set expectations MUCH higher, but remember, he has never, ever been a HC.

Like many of you, I’m lowering my expectations for the BB game today – a close loss would feel like a win – oh how low we have fallin.

Good news though – we start fresh today without Pederson, X HCPC and Outhouse. We are a more pleasant “smelling” FB program this morning.

Comment by Erie Express 01.03.15 @ 11:52 am

PittPT, no, he is juts plain incompetent

Comment by wbb 01.03.15 @ 12:18 pm

I had 3 thoughts as we disintegrated. 1.Also, House sabotage. 2.Narduzzie can see why he needs top DC and ST coord/coachs .And the total rebuild of the D/ST that is needed.3.Total attitude makeover from ” Mumbles” reign.

Comment by Pitt 60 01.03.15 @ 12:24 pm

Step back from the ledge.

Remember this is the Team that BEAT Miami in Miami, though nearly everyone thought it would NEVER happen.

The Offense is a 9-10 WIN Offense.

If Narduzzi does HIS THING with the Defense… and is SMART ENOUGH to leave the Offense ON TRACK… you’ll be AMAZED what a difference a Year makes.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.03.15 @ 12:39 pm

sorry total embarrassment finally setting in we central pa will be getting shit for months,do any of u buy what u just saw can money be wasted any better,

Comment by paul shannon 01.03.15 @ 12:55 pm

PittPT, as Napoleon said, never ascribe to malice that which can easily be explained by stupidity.

Michigan State lost to only two teams this year. Both of which will play in the national championship.

Pitt players made a lot of dumb mistakes in this game, but I’m very confident HCPN can coach that out of them. How hard is it to walk away from an onside kick that doesn’t go 10 yards?

Comment by 66Goat 01.03.15 @ 1:15 pm

Wow is this a sad basketball team. With essentially zero inside presence it really is just pass it around the perimeter and sort of, I don’t know, hope the other team gets lazy on D? No penetration, can’t finish with defenders in their face. No attempts at adjustments by Dixon, just keep doing the same thing and hope for a different result. Going to be a long-a@# season.

Comment by Carmen 01.03.15 @ 1:30 pm

POD – did you not get the memo that Miami is terrible?

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.03.15 @ 1:43 pm

Then in the final analysis, I think in general House comes up with a decent initial defensive gameplan but is unable to make any adjustments to it or has a complete brain freeze in the face of adversity. Maybe initial gameplanning is what you do from 9-5, and adjustments are what you’d work on if you stayed after an 8 hour workday…

Comment by PittPT 01.03.15 @ 1:45 pm

Pitt… House also comes up short with the initial Gameplan… (see Akron).

Vinopal was quoted as saying they were NOT prepared for what Akron was doing Offensively.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.03.15 @ 3:30 pm

As for Miami… Hindsight is always easy.

Upitt, don’t remember if you were on the record predicting that one?

Remember pretty much being ALONE saying a Pitt Win was a LOCK.

Of course, I started saying it back in August.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.03.15 @ 3:33 pm

Really the only thing to look forward to, are Narduzzi’s staff announcements. In the Post-Gazette article Pat Narduzzi said he hopes to have those decisions made by the end of next week.

Comment by Justinian 01.03.15 @ 3:42 pm

POD – You did kind sir. I will put money on your 2015 lock no doubt! ????

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.03.15 @ 3:50 pm

As bad as this loss seems it was in a game that had little significance. As improbable a comeback as it was, three touchdowns, two recovered onside kicks and a two point conversion, the lost to Cincy was worse. Pitt a big lead in that game and it was for a league championship.

Comment by Justinian 01.03.15 @ 3:55 pm

This morning I rewatched yesterdays abortion of a bowl game. A leopard cannot hide its spots. It was a game where assistant coaches futures were being decided and the fact that our coaching staff was suffering from bipolar disorder was made painfully clear. To totally blame this result on coaching is however a mistake. Our players and team leaders proved that a lack of coaching isn’t the teams only problem. In fact there was very little to question on the offensive coaching. Shortages were lack of execution. Defense and special teams coaching was a D- because we kicked a 52 yard feild goal and faked a punt successfully.

Boyd- Tyler what were you thinking when you attempted to feild a punt running the wrong direction at full speed while the ball was bouncing within ten yards of our own goal line?
What were you thinking when you kicked the fallen defender while he was trying to get up, the play before you dropped the game winning catch?

Conner- Where was your desire to finish our opponent. You looked kind of silly running out of bounds inside the 15 yardline in a situation that had seen you storm into the endzone all season long. The defenders were tired and ready to tumble but you opened the door to letting them off the hook by ducking the contact. That led to a feild goal. You obviously thought you had done enough. That’s how losers think but All Americans finish the job. There is all kind of talk about you turning pro at the end of next year. I hope that works out. I suggest you have an agent go for as much up front money as possible because from what I saw yesterday you have no pro future. You are too slow and not near tough enough to play with the big boys.

Anybody on defense- When the other teams best pass catcher has just made 2 huge catches in a row because nobody attempted to cover him couldn’t one of you (no matter how poorly coached) have insisted someone cover him on the next play? Aparently not because the only players near him on the games deciding play were only in proximity because he wandered in their direction.

We have more than coaching problems that need fixed. We should have won yeseterdays game by 40 points and won 10 or 11 games this season. Good coaching would have gotten us closer to both but focused team leaders with heart and desire would have helped too. Our hot dog stars were the heroes of this embarassing chapter of Pitt history too. We can’t just blame coaching no matter how bad.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.03.15 @ 4:19 pm

The good news is no one saw the game but us. The bad news is we saw the game.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.03.15 @ 4:20 pm

Spirit. Yes you’re correct. However well be in the record books for the the worst 4th quarter collapse in Bowl history.

Comment by Justinian 01.03.15 @ 5:15 pm

@POD,
My bad…I forgot about the defensive prep for Akron…

Comment by PittPT 01.03.15 @ 6:07 pm

So much for the prediction of Narduzzi having oat of his staff in place by Saturday 1/3/15!
That’s why the guy should have been hiring staff for the last week rather than coaching MSU in their bowl game. I’m glad he was there in person to see that most recent Pitt abortion delivered in person. It would have been even better to have had the newly hired DC there also so that he could see and smell the stink that this house defense puts out up close and personal prior to his first attempts to exorcise those entrenched demons from this current squad.
Never forget Houston!

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.04.15 @ 10:33 am

Come on….I’m jonesing for some coaching staff hire speculation and everything is silent. Upitt, are you hearing anything? Anybody….?

Comment by PittPT 01.04.15 @ 12:13 pm

after a bad weekend of pittsburgh sports, i am jonesing for some good football news. can’t wait for the hires!!!

Comment by pittisit37 01.04.15 @ 12:17 pm

even the pay sites got nothing except silence

Comment by pittisit37 01.04.15 @ 12:23 pm

So – who won the game yesterday?

JK

Spirit – I’m going to remember that you felt we should have won 10-11 games this year, which I assume means that you feel we had the talent on the roster to do so.

I just wonder what PITT fans are going to say when Narduzzi goes 6-6 next year also… will it be ‘the cupboard was bare’ for him also?

Comment by Reed 01.04.15 @ 4:29 pm

Reed, hearing anything as to the coordinator frontrunners or interviews of the current staff?
