Hope everyone had a good one. No Pitt coaches appeared to have been arrested on the final day of 2014, so that is always a positive way to end the year.
It is nice to feel like we are starting the new year with some sense of optimism and hope. Hopefully the hangovers are at a minimum.
I’m feeling pretty good this morning and enjoying a mid-morning mimosa. Would have preferred a Bloody Mary as the morning drink, but mixing them up is too time consuming and I’ve yet to find a mix that I really like. If this is the biggest problem I have today, I think 2015 is off to a good start.
The first day of the year is also the last day of overlapping college football games for the season. The first three games staggered a half-hour apart from each other. Obviously the most interesting to Pitt fans will be the Cotton Bowl between Baylor and Michigan State. That one starts at 12:30 on ESPN.
The curiosity over MSU’s defense for Pat Narduzzi. Michigan State let teams cross the 30-point barrier only three times this season. This is a Baylor squad where their lowest offensive output was 27 points. In nine games they scored 45 points or more. Yes, Big 12 defenses and a non-con schedule versus no body of any quality — part of what cost them that playoff spot.
It isn’t a true immovable object versus an unstoppable force, but it will probably be presented that way.
I realize points allowed or scored is not an a particularly detailed stat for showing how good an offense or defense really is, but I’m not about to try and go deep on this stuff at the last minute.
I just want to sit back and enjoy the games.

He’s talking smack on the Shit 10 yet Wisconsin beat one of his precious SEC teams and MSU just beat one of his precious Big 12 despite MSU’s QB making Chad Voytik’s first half of this season look awesome. Big 12 is sucking big time this bowl season. The two SEC teams from Mississippi went down hard and the SEC looks overrated (again).
UPitt will simply shift gears and cherry pick winners like Missouri or TCU and stats like Petty’s 500+ passing as evidence of SEC or Big 12 superiority. However he’ll ignore Gordon and Wisky running all over Auburn or GT (from his beloved ACC Coastal) dominating Miss State.

Point is… so far, I’m impressed with Narduzzi’s D.
Knew what he does. But first time watching it.
The KEY is you need ATHLETIC D-Backs who can RUN to pull it off.
Curious now to see how much PRESSURE Narduzzi is able to get on Petty. If they can manage to do that, GAME OVER.
But so far, not much.

Just bustin your chops upitt. You and I agree on a lot, except that I am not as passionate in my positions that everyone sucks. Pitt is real close in my opinion to being a consistent 8 win team with an occasional 9 or 10 win squad…..offensively. Win with defense and turnover differential.
Beating spread teams hinges on Dline pressure and containment/discipline. It all goes back to the trenches. We need to get better in the trenches on the defensive side of the ball. Offensive line wise, we should improve even more next year. Great recruiting on the oline creates the competition and depth they all need to get better!
