Open Thread: FGCU-Pitt

Hey, some basketball!

Any abbreviation that ends in “CU” has me thinking credit union, first.  No matter what the Sweet 16 run a couple years back did for Florida Gulf Coast name recognition.

It’s another ESPN3.com game. Things get underway at 7:30 tonight.

FGCU is a senior-heavy team. They have a nice win over UMass, but they have also lost to FIU. They play at a faster tempo than Pitt (but then most teams do), but not breakneck. They struggle with offensive efficiency which is why they need to push tempo and get more possessions.

The challenge for Pitt will be in the very thin and not particularly tall frontcourt. Joseph Uchebo is out of the country to attend to his mother, who is ill enough that he headed back to Nigeria. I guess, potentially, that could mean Tyrone Haughton could make his first appearance of the season. That or more Derrick Randall than I’m comfortable seeing in a game.

I haven’t done nearly enough on basketball in light of the football changes, but it will be nice to watch an actual game involving Pitt.

Sadly, it wouldn’t. There would just be tons of excuses.

FSU may be better than everyone thinks…they beat GT in a much bigger game than this one. Looking forward to the Oregon game.

The SEC is a media myth

Comment by Chick 12.31.14 @ 11:21 pm

We turned the ball over 6 times and played GT as good as MSU has.

Comment by Jackagain 12.31.14 @ 11:22 pm

The SEC’s “vaunted” defenses are taking a hit today, that’s for sure.

Comment by Jackagain 12.31.14 @ 11:24 pm

Georgia Tech is basically CMU with D-1 athletics. Their ranking is almost the same (CMU #25 GT #35) and their academic strengths are the same. Good for GT, the Coastal, and the ACC.

Comment by PittHW 12.31.14 @ 11:28 pm

Let’s not get out of control folks. The SEC is a very very good conf. I still think FSU gets smoked. Jameis is just not a good QB this year. OSU will lose by 15 or more.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.31.14 @ 11:30 pm

UPitt 8.19 Georgia Tech has no chance.

Comment by Chick 12.31.14 @ 11:38 pm

ACC

Comment by gc 12.31.14 @ 11:41 pm

Ga Tech started the year struggling against Wofford, Tulane and Ga. Southern, muddled thru the early ACC schedule, then took off like a rocket after rolling Pitt. Confidence leads to winning.

The SEC has consistently had the best team and been the deepest conference over the past decade, but that has resulted in this media-fueled myth that SEC teams are unbeatable.

Classic moment today when Ole Miss was down 21-0, Bo Wallace reportedly tried to rally the Rebs by reminding them that, ‘We are the SEC!’ He then promptly choked up a pick 6.

I still think Bama wins it all. In fact I hope they beat the crap out of the Buckeyes. Because if any conference is truly overrated, it is the Big Joke.

Comment by Iron Duke 12.31.14 @ 11:46 pm

Upitt’s best ever prediction ” Wisconsin will never take Chryst “

Comment by gc 12.31.14 @ 11:46 pm

That Gatorade bath thing is really getting old…

Comment by Jackagain 12.31.14 @ 11:48 pm

I think Baylor is really going to spank MSU tomorrow. The 3rd best team in the B1G against Baylor?

Comment by Jackagain 12.31.14 @ 11:53 pm

MSU has to force turnovers or it will be a long day.

Comment by gc 12.31.14 @ 11:58 pm

GC – Would you take the bum??? I wouldnt. 19-19 and loves yes people. He will be Barry’s bitch while Barry runs the program.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.01.15 @ 12:03 am

I know Harbaugh has even successful at every stop, but is there any chance he fails at Michigan? That program has fallen far. They have the resources to come back quickly, but they are reminding me of Notre Dame in their ability to F up an almost perfect situation.

Comment by Iron Duke 01.01.15 @ 12:21 am

Yeah it must be a bitch getting a million dollar raise and going home. Happy New Year!

Comment by gc 01.01.15 @ 12:40 am

The SEC is “supposed” to be good based on their players stars.. I concede they have potential every year, but from what I have seen on the field, the Big 12 and ACC can most certainly hold their own.

Potential shouldn’t equal a ranking, it should be based on performance. There is no argument at this time that the Sec is any better than the Big 12 or the ACC. They may have more stars down in the southeast, but the way you play your opponents matters so much more. Should the top SEC teams beat the top ACC and Big 12 teams? On paper yes. On the field, its repetitively becoming questionable.

The reality is, with some talent, a good coaching plan, and a lot of heart, teams can accomplish a heck of a lot if they show up for their opportunity.

Comment by PittFan28 01.01.15 @ 1:09 am

Great game by GTech. SEC wasn’t prepared after nearly a month of practice. That to me is the most amazing part of the entire game. It wasn’t like MSU only had a week to get ready. They had a month!!

Clemson and Gtech were real nice wins and keeps the discussion about the ACC being in the top three conferences, front and center. Looks like Gtech will finish around 8 in the final polls and FSU will be in the top 6, if not higher. Clemson should make a nice jump too, so the ACC is positioned for 2 in the top 10 and three in the top 15.

Happy new year everybody!! Wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015. Wishing Pitt football 8 wins next year and a big finish to recruiting! Let the hiring begin after the MSU game today!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 01.01.15 @ 1:57 am

As much as I detest Ohio State & the Big Ten, I think they win by 10 tomorrow. This years Alabama has not been as impressive and these are not the Buckeyes of Jim Tressel. They were by far the fastest team in the Big Ten and I think Alabama overlooks them. And I absolutely hate to say that.

I also think Baylor wins by 2 touchdowns and scores at least 30 on MSU.

This was a down year for the SEC is every way except Top 25 rankings.

And would somebody in nation media every give Georgia Tech & Paul Johnson and TCU & Patterson some freakin’ credit?

I think Ohio State wins the championship but TCU would have beat them by 2-3 scores.

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 01.01.15 @ 2:38 am

UPitt with another fearless prediction MSU over GT by 12 (wrong by 27 the other way) you are now 8-7, we could say 8-8 since you missed on the PC to Wisky comment. What are your picks for today and Friday?

Comment by Markp 01.01.15 @ 2:40 am

– I will give a h@^dj%b to a Billie Goat if OSU doesnt lose by 15.
Comment by Upittbaseball 12.31.14 @ 8:35 pm

@ Markp – does the above count as one of his predictions for today? LOL

Comment by Erie Express 01.01.15 @ 7:01 am

We can stomp on the SEC now because that’s what we do here. However, in fairness, they have had quite a bit to brag about over the past 10 years.

Comment by wbb 01.01.15 @ 8:50 am

change of topic — PG story today about Jeter’s improvement on defense leading to more PT, which gives the team a needed boost.

Hope this is true since he certainly is athletic with skills… with much more potential than any of the true 5s. But on the other hand, this was the only game so far where he was given extended PT.

Maybe JD has finally realized that the team must go small this year with Young and Luther at the 5 which means Artis and Jeter playing the 4, and some 3.

Comment by wbb 01.01.15 @ 9:04 am

The Arizona teams were overrated this year. One falls to Boise and one barely beats Duke.

Comment by notrocketscience 01.01.15 @ 9:05 am

HAPPY NEW YEAR Blatherites! I’m still in Miami wallowing in GA Tech’s win over the Bulldogs. I can’t say enough about Paul Johnson and what a genius he is. Tech very seldom gets the super talent that many Division I schools get but Paul is able to coach them up to his exciting style of football. Mississippi State’s players were in shock. Tech could have scored 60 points but Johnson didn’t want to embarrass the Bulldogs. SEC who? Beware of the ACC!

All we could hear in our hotel before the game were those obnoxious cow bells that the Mississippi State fans bring with them. The scene reminded me of the obnoxious Georgia fans who made fun of us Pitt fans in the 1977 Sugar Bowl. We all know how that game ended, right. ?
Tech should finish in the top 10 in 2014 and will stay there when the 2015 rankings come out. I expect to see Pitt in those rankings as well. Can’t wait for the Pitt vs. Tech game played in Atlanta this year.
I hope Pitt finishes its season by beating the Houston Cougars. If Coach Randolph can get the players excited about playing tough, Pitt will win. Pitt’s defense is not that bad, it just gets down on itself. A good defensive coach could turn Pitt’s defense around without too much trouble.
Hail to Pitt!

here is a summary of the potential coordinators from Cardiac Hill.

link to cardiachill.com

These names have all been mentioned here, but maybe a bit more info here on some of them.

But I want to the join one of the commenters to this article ‘Todd Graham Real Estate Agent’ in wishing you all a “Happy Coach Mike Haywood Day”

Comment by wbb 01.01.15 @ 9:19 am

Congrats MMike. That was a great game to watch and end the year.

Not getting much media coverage of the Pitt team and bowl game prep. I hope the team is focused and prepared – we should be able to smash Houston in the mouth right off the start – does this team have the “killer” instinct needed to rise into relevance? HCPN does – looking forward to the change.

But first, Pitt has a bowl game to play – HTP!

Comment by Erie Express 01.01.15 @ 9:26 am

Erie – I think it does count.

For those who don’t agree with PN coaching MSU during the day and planning his Pitt staff and conditioning program at night…OSU OC Herman is coaching OSU during the day and planning his Houston gig at night…he also claims he stayed on to finish the project he started.

Comment by markp 01.01.15 @ 9:36 am

I like Bama over OSU. I also like Oregon. Not sure points for the spreads but Bama by 15. They should make the kid playing QB’s life a living hell today. Its only his 2nd game ever and Bama will confuse him.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.01.15 @ 11:04 am

UPitt, you are really going out on a limb picking the favorites this morning. According to the media pundits, those two can’t lose.

Comment by gc 01.01.15 @ 11:23 am

I hope we see some competitive, fun to watch games.

Comment by gc 01.01.15 @ 11:23 am

GC – I cant help who I like. I said by 15. That takes some balls.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.01.15 @ 11:46 am

It only takes balls on these predictions of yours if you have to take a kick in them when your wrong, otherwise all it takes is an opinion and a keyboard.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.01.15 @ 12:03 pm

@MMike = Congratulations on the victory. Excellent offensive showing but the defense had a great day. The dee gave up a lot of yards but kept them out of the end zone.

See below comment by Upitt. Ga. Tech fans make look different but will be bossing those SEC grads either now or in the future.

These Georgia Texh fans look like nerds and dorks.

Comment by PITT-cocks fan 01.01.15 @ 1:27 pm

PITT-cocks fan — Tech fans like to party too they just look at life a little differently. Tech students make fun of their Management students because it’s the easiest way to get a GA Tech degree. Management at Pitt is their Business program.
