Time To Really Look

So Wisconsin has a press conference set for 6pm Central Time (7pm for those of us in the East) this evening.

Bastards. Just happens to be the same time Pitt tips against Manhattan, and I would always rather be focused on an actual game than all the other stuff.

On the bright side, there is no surprise at this point. No abrupt departure or hastily arranged press conferences. This has been the week-long build since Gary Andersen stunned Badgers everywhere by making the move to Oregon State.

This is Paul Chryst’s dream job. It’s his alma mater. It’s his home. It’s working for the guy he reveres. I don’t have ill will to Chyrst. And it simply makes the most sense for Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez to hire Chryst.

Wisconsin isn’t used to coaching instability. They may be amateurs compared to Pitt, but the last few years have still been jarring. Chryst, if nothing else, brings a sense of calm to their coaching turnover.

For Alvarez, this is a no-brainer. Not because Chryst is a sure thing. Not because of bringing stability. But because Chryst will put up with Alvarez’s ego for long enough.

Bret Bielema got fed up with Wisconsin for many things. One of those things included not being given as much credit for what he was accomplishing. Alvarez actually diminished his own coach’s accomplishments during Bielema’s tenure by saying that all Wisconsin was doing was running the same system that he established as the Wisconsin coach.

Among the reasons for Andersen’s surprising move to Corvallis were whispers of meddling and credit grabbing by Alvarez.

Coaches have egos. Big egos. Even Chryst. But his personality probably meshes and handles Alvarez better than anyone else. He doesn’t just “fit” for Wisconsin. He fits for working for Alvarez.

As for Pitt, the feelers have been sent out. Feelers by others sent in. Greg Schiano has been talked to. Just as Wisconsin talked to him.

Schiano is easy to talk to. He’s not under contract to anyone else, and the other reason it is known that he has been in talks is because it is in the Schiano camp’s interest to make sure others know there is interest in him.

For coaches presently with other schools, it has been the back channel approach. Pitt will do things reasonably up front — which means notifying other schools if they are or want to speak to a coach in their employ, now that Chryst is gone.

This is where some patience is required. Pitt will not have a new coach in place before the weekend. There is no slam dunk or no-brainer candidate for Pitt. No matter who your own personal favorite or perceived best guy is.

There will be more than one candidate formally interviewed. There will be negotiations. There will be the required board vote to approve a contract. It is going to take more than 48 hours.

It means dealing with rumors. It means the potential of names coming into play and dropping out. It means some coaches can and will try to use Pitt as leverage at their own job or against another potential suitor for more money, control or extras.

It is all the things that are obvious and apparent when looking at some other program’s coaching search. Yet hard to see when it is our own.

That does not make the coaching search a dumpster fire. At least not yet. Give it a little time before declaring a disaster.

Never heard that analogy before Upitt–Didn’t know there was such an animal. Damn you are really happy–delirious! Fantastic! Now lets win the 2 searches and the bowl game. H2P!!!

Comment by OPFIM 12.17.14 @ 7:47 pm

gentlemen, can we now stop using the term same old pitt. gallagher has got balls!!!

Comment by pittisit37 12.17.14 @ 7:48 pm

Rudolph to coach bowl according to TV announcer.

Comment by Frank MD 12.17.14 @ 7:51 pm

Gallagher is a badass.

Word is that he will be filling the AD spot first (which is what exactly one of us has been advocating) then hiring a football coach.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 12.17.14 @ 7:53 pm

This is amazing news! And I was never really that hard on SP… I didn’t think it made much of a difference who was sitting in the AD’s office while the kids were on the field/court. But you guys began convincing me otherwise over the past month or so…

So congrats to all Pitt fans for this great new opportunity!

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Pitt2Cali 12.17.14 @ 7:55 pm

OMG H2P, just wow. I guess Gallagher is the man. no more SOP

Comment by NYPanther 12.17.14 @ 7:56 pm

lmao still.

Comment by Emel 12.17.14 @ 7:58 pm

Guys, Well Done!! We each deserve a pat on the back on this. Now, if they take PC’s $1.4M and use it to pay off Pederson, we start fresh!

This plays right into what we thought was happening. Can guarantee Schiano was one that said not interested with Pederson in charge.

Could he really have been that stupid to think he had a chance with Chryst? Dumbass!

In a statement released by Pitt, they cite blatherites as main reason for canning the douche!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 12.17.14 @ 7:59 pm

Upitt you may be right….i’d like to believe however this happened not becuase we interviewed a bunch of coaches and they all said i wont work for SP…it just seems more plausible at this point gallagher realized who SP really is and did what he thought was right despite as you suggested pressure not to from nordy.

If i am right…then…i am in love with our new chancellor. Good for him!

Comment by DD 12.17.14 @ 7:59 pm

Cornhole was last seen driving down I-79 towards Morganhole.

Comment by Emel 12.17.14 @ 8:01 pm

I heard that Pederson was going to be out in the spring anyway. Chryst leaving just sped up the process. I’m guessing that means Pitt would rather have new AD in place before hiring a new coach.

Comment by Nick 12.17.14 @ 8:07 pm

SP and HCPC gone but I still wont be happy if they hire Rudolph. As far as the recruiting class, other than Whithead and the running back who cares. It’s a MAC level class let them all leave. Far better and more qualified coaches out there than Rudolph pl

Comment by Chick 12.17.14 @ 8:07 pm

So Chryst really did establish the foundation for this program moving forward in more ways than one!!

here is a copy of the press release.

Rudolph is interim coach as well.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.17.14 @ 8:09 pm

I wish Blather was around when they discussed Pitt stadium.

Comment by Frank MD 12.17.14 @ 8:13 pm

Wow, Penni and Fraud were just spotted at the Phoenix Airport boarding a private jet.

Fraud was heard to say in a loud and giddy voice, “Penni we can now go back to the Burgh and I can resume my dream job”.

Comment by isnore99 12.17.14 @ 8:15 pm

Rudolph looks to be trending higher now and I am okay with him as a placeholder until we get a new AD who can get a top name. This is bittersweet.

A big name head coach would be crazy to come into a situation where you don’t know the name of your boss yet. Just saying guys…

This is just the best news I think we could have heard today. Neidermeyer….dead; Pederson….dead! Thank you to the Chancellor. You do care about us blatherites!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 12.17.14 @ 8:21 pm

I survived the Pederson era & all I got was mediocre teams & crummy bowl games.

Comment by Nick 12.17.14 @ 8:23 pm

New AD gets to make a hire 100%. Get a winner from a Great program that knows how to spend money. Get. Louisvile’s AD now. Bring in a outsider who doesn’t know we are cheap and maybe he will change our culture

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.17.14 @ 8:29 pm

Love the timing, during the Wisky press conference. I guess my question is, now what? What is the next step? dhuffdaddy makes a good point. In the short term, does not having an AD make it tough to get a coach to commit? Very interested to see what the plan is.

Comment by Iron Duke 12.17.14 @ 8:30 pm

Just on the radio listening to Bill Hillgrove – confirmed by Gallagher that AD Peterson mutually parted ways – Steve is no longer the Pitt AD.

New SOP – Steve Out (with House) Peterson

Taking off the last 5 days from the Blather – Priceless

Comment by Erie Express 12.17.14 @ 8:31 pm

Link to Chryst press conference.

I will continue to say he was a class act.

He did us well.

We are MUCH better off today then we were before he came here.

Now let’s see what the new leadership can do with it.

And I am fine with Rudolph for a few years as new team is put in place… then either he gets it done which is fine, or he moves on.

Rudolph is a SOP move NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 12.17.14 @ 8:32 pm

ESPN announced during basketball game that Cornhole was indeed…….FIRED.

fIRED….IS NOT MUTUAL. HAHA

Comment by Emel 12.17.14 @ 8:34 pm

that’s what is the most amazing thing.

he wasn’t given the ‘resignation’ bs.

he was flat out FIRED. wHICH WAS LONG OVERDUE.

Comment by Emel 12.17.14 @ 8:36 pm

HCPC did a his job here at pitt….he got SP fired!!

H2P!!

Comment by Keith 12.17.14 @ 8:38 pm

I don’t think they would have fired Pederson to hire Rudolph. I expect a major hire very soon

Comment by John 12.17.14 @ 8:39 pm

AGREE john

Comment by Emel 12.17.14 @ 8:44 pm

Does this mean I need to start answering the phone again when the caller ID reads “UNIV OF PITT?”

Gallagher was a fairly high ranking official within the Fed. gov’t. You get there by being decisive, knowing how to scratch a few backs while at the same time watching your own. If this is glimmer of things to come, I think the University will be in fine shape for many years to come.

Today begins a new chapter in Pitt history.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Yeti 12.17.14 @ 8:45 pm

In Patrick Gallagher I trust!!

Do what you need to brother!

Hail To Pitt!!!!!!

Comment by Dan 12.17.14 @ 8:45 pm

Must hire the new AD first.

Rudolph as interim HC for the bowl game is the right call for now.

Former HCPC – we thank you if you had anything to do with our former AD’s firing. If not, then thanks for Conner & Boyd – first team to 10 next year, wins – lol

Comment by Erie Express 12.17.14 @ 8:47 pm

Group of players pushing to keep rudolph at chancellor office. Going to be interesting couple weeks.

Comment by 18 melba 12.17.14 @ 8:47 pm

AD hired within 2 weeks and coach within 2 as well. Good AD’s have a hot list guys. In business you always are prepared and have a list.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.17.14 @ 8:48 pm

First things first. You hire the AD. Then you let he or she be instrumental in the Search for a New Head Coach.

Can’t see how this thing can be rushed.

In the presser… Pitt Admin were extremely complimentary of Rudolph.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.17.14 @ 8:51 pm

Pitt Admin were extremely complimentary of Rudolph.

I’m sure he got a nice little bonus to coach the bowl game and to stick around for awhile. You don’t want him heading for the hills too soon. I’m sure he will receive x $$$ to stick around until Y date or until he is released from his contract/ new coach is named.

Comment by Yeti 12.17.14 @ 8:55 pm

POD, don’t want to rush agree, but little time to waste in regard to salvaging recruits. Feel better now that Pederson is gone that a legit plan is in the works.

Comment by Iron Duke 12.17.14 @ 8:56 pm

This is even better than having a new head coach ready to go the instant Chryst resigned.

Comment by deepelemblues 12.17.14 @ 9:07 pm

Steve pederson said “with major decisions to be made about the future of football i thought it was in the best interest of pitt for chancellor gallagher to assemble his own team”

Wow.

Let me repeat.

WOW.

That statement just speaks volumes to me. SP i dont know u but that is the statement of a completely self centered, egotistical jerk. Good riddance.

Comment by DD 12.17.14 @ 9:07 pm

You are right DD. Smug remains a TOOL to the very end.

Comment by pd 12.17.14 @ 9:14 pm

Wow. Channeling the ghosts of Myron Cope and Bob Prince

Triple Yoi and spread some chicken on the hill!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Golden lights on top of the Drunken Compass (Cathedral of Learning)

Light up the Gulf tower – Hoist the Jolly Roger – wave the Towel!!!

Whatever –

what a joyous night!

The bear costume was hilarious – but no longer needed!!!!!

HAIL TO PITT

Must have really scared him ……mill.

Whatever it takes….you know !

Comment by Emel 12.17.14 @ 9:23 pm

Rudolph has zero chance guys. Zero. His only chance was fired 3 hours ago.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.17.14 @ 9:27 pm

Thank God Pederson is out….and his pal Nordy too. Merry Christmas to us! Smiley & Potato Paul put out one fell swoop. Thank you Wisconsin!

We were right about Pederson being out after Gallagher was the one talking to PC last week. Now someone needs to investigate that backroom 5 year extension his pal Nordy drew up before departing.

New post by Chas, let move the conversation..

Comment by ShorePitt 12.17.14 @ 9:30 pm

Ok let’s start the talk on who the next AD is going to be….have to compete with WVU to get the best one….Does Gallagher have a short list ready?

If new AD just hires Rudolph then they hired the wrong AD.

This is chance to really shake things up…blow it up and start from scratch.

Comment by milobloom 12.17.14 @ 9:45 pm

The reality is that the new Chancellor is doing it his way. He realizes that this is a marathon not a sprint so it is important NOT to do patch work but instead do a complete over haul of the athletic department. No new coach without a new AD first who WILL BE PART OF THE SEARCH and SELECTION process for the next coach. Expect head coach to be name by Bowl time to get maximum splash. Expect AD in place by Xmas.

Hail to Pitt!
