Open Thread: Pitt-Chaminade

Okay, so that first game in the 5oth state didn’t go as planned. Not in the least. If you are looking for the silver lining — and admittedly you really have to look — losing that way probably made the point about needing to play defense better than any lecture, practice session or film session could have. Not that Coach Dixon didn’t emphasize the film session.

And it was lots and lots and lots of film watching. And then when there was a little more film to watch before the day was done. It apparently was an all day affair in the video room as he tried to, as he said “get them to see the things we need them to do that they aren’t doing defensively. Each team had a designated practice time at the gym but Dixon opted not to use it and again, instead had a very long and at times, unpleasant, film session.

Hopefully things can only go up from there. Tonight Pitt takes on the Chaminade Silverswords.Which is just awesome to type. The game is on ESPNU at 9pm.

Obviously Pitt will improve defensively when Cameron Wright returns, but the other individual players need to be better at the defensive end. It’s easy to put a lot of it on the backcourt that doesn’t prevent the penetration that allows a lot of kick-outs for open looks or drives all the way to the rim. Or on the lack of size up front.

But  the players have been playing lip service to being better on defense since before the start of the season without actually doing it. Acknowledging after games that they need to be better, but not following through on the words.

With Pitt’s loss to Hawai’i on Friday, Chaminade should be feeling like they have more than a puncher’s chance. Their fans should be ready for this. We will see if Pitt has learned anything since Friday.

Ice cold start from outside. Luckily we’re rebounding.

I just gotta say it….defense just keeps lookimg horrible!! As a pitt fan i am used to shooting bricks, which we are. But man, layups and open 3 pointers. We look terrible.

Comment by DD 11.24.14 @ 9:28 pm

This is a very average Pitt team. No center, slow pg, and
Poor outside shooting and it’s going to be a long
Season.

Comment by Dan 72 11.24.14 @ 9:32 pm

Young looks great though….honesly looks like the only person pitt has with legitimate offensive moves.

Now we are cooking! We need to RUN! We are damn good in the open floor.

Comment by DD 11.24.14 @ 9:32 pm

Indiana just lost at home to E Washington 88-86. Haha @ Crean. Maybe we can beat these guys too….

Comment by Jackagain 11.24.14 @ 9:52 pm

Wholly cow both young and randall are going to have double doubles…in the 1st half!

Comment by DD 11.24.14 @ 9:52 pm

we should always play D2 teams maybe. Randall especially.

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 9:57 pm

Jaime getting some TV time.

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 9:58 pm

I see Shameus Jameis back at it.

Should have been tossed.

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 10:05 pm

I am so curious what the deal is with uchebo. Just like against niagra, dixon pulls him within like a minute. Ok he went over the back for a foul. but its gotta br more than that. He is getting yanked so fast i cannot even tell if he is playing well or not.

Comment by DD 11.24.14 @ 10:05 pm

I’m hoping that we learned something about rebounding, from watching the Hawaii film on Saturday, which will carry over for the rest of the season.

Comment by Howard 11.24.14 @ 10:07 pm

How about that trap leading to a steal and a foul. I’d like to see more of that. Randall was one of the Panthers in on that trap. He could be playing his best game every today.

Comment by Howard 11.24.14 @ 10:16 pm

I’m not sure Uchebo is healthy according to even Ucehebo standards.

Hopefully Cam will be back by Indiana.

Mike Young is a beast.

Comment by Wardapalooza 11.24.14 @ 10:16 pm

Hawaii taught us never to take a game for granted this year. I’m really enjoying this one.

Comment by Howard 11.24.14 @ 10:22 pm

Still no perimeter D. Looks like they’re clogging the paint looking to get a big edge in rebounds. Well that’s working…

Comment by Jackagain 11.24.14 @ 10:33 pm

Cornhole must have gotten to ESPN…

cause we’re ‘Pittsburgh’ tonite.

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 10:33 pm

19 of Chaminade’s 33 shots have been 3’s so far!?!

Comment by TVax 11.24.14 @ 10:36 pm

Funny how this tournament played in a HS gym basically killed the Rainbow Classic.

Pitt won in 1986 in a first class arena in Honolulu.

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 10:43 pm

Is this basketball or football?! Bad defense, cor hole is an asshole…SOP?

Comment by Pitt it Is 11.24.14 @ 10:46 pm

When he first came in and dumped “Pitt” for “Pittsburgh”, it was a slap in the face.

Comment by Justinian 11.24.14 @ 10:47 pm

Cameron Johnson is gonna be a stud in a couple years….and if JD doesn’t screw it up..this team should be real good also

Comment by Keith 11.24.14 @ 10:50 pm

tomorrow night will be the rebounding test. San Diego St is as good rebounding team as there is in the NCAA

Comment by wbb 11.24.14 @ 10:50 pm

I know its chaminade….but it is nice to see us dominate a little. Young looks great. Played like blair tonight.

Comment by DD 11.24.14 @ 10:51 pm

That’s an insult to Blair.

Comment by DC33 11.24.14 @ 10:55 pm

Tonight shows how good we could be with a real center, allowing young to play 4. Unfortunately i doubt randall can keep this up all season. And even then, despite 20 rebounds his defense was terrible tonight…yet dixon gave him tons of minutes…maybe dixon realizes at the end of the day, he needs to play young at the 4.

Comment by DD 11.24.14 @ 10:57 pm

The swords shooting 53% from THE FIELD, and 53% from the line.

Comment by alcofan 11.24.14 @ 10:58 pm

27 points and 15 boards is an insult?

Comment by DD 11.24.14 @ 11:01 pm

We win the rebounding battle 50-16 wow.

Comment by alcofan 11.24.14 @ 11:02 pm

50 rebounds…lol

Comment by Jackagain 11.24.14 @ 11:02 pm

Randall could be a star in D2.

Yeah we didn’t suffer another embarrassment.

Pitt wins #3

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 11:04 pm

DD. No offense my Pitt brother but Michael Young is no BLAIR!

Comment by DC33 11.24.14 @ 11:04 pm

Perimeter defense stunk.

The Silverswords shot 42 % from 3 and 51% overall.

Pitt was just too physically big for them. Sort of like Pitt vs. Delaware in football.

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 11:06 pm

Well we shot a ton of bricks in the first half…lots of rebounds were there for the taking! Still, it was nice to see the crashing of the boards like they did.

Comment by DD 11.24.14 @ 11:06 pm

The big question is:

for the next game against BYU or SDSU…will we be Pitt or Pittsburgh (according to game announcers).

(what do they hold a meeting to determine this or just get a memo from ESPN)

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 11:09 pm

usually Sean McDonaugh mostly calls us Pitt.

Since he went to Cuse. Zip, zilch, nada tonite.

Both by him and the color announcer.

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 11:11 pm

Do not be FOOLED by a BEATDOWN of Chaminade.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.24.14 @ 11:15 pm

Exactly! Who are the best five?

Comment by DC33 11.24.14 @ 11:18 pm

Dc33 asks who are the best five?

Today they were Robinson, Newkirk, Cam Johnson, Young and Randall.

Johnson may turn out to be the biggest surprise of all. He must be a quick learner on defense, or he’d be sitting on the bench next to Jeter. And he is good at hitting threes — 3 for 5 tonight.

Comment by Howard 11.25.14 @ 1:40 am

Dixon knows that Uchebo’s knee(s) have a limited number of minutes left in them. Randall was playing well and dominating on the glass against an inferior opponent. And with an important game today, Dixon was smart to put Uchebo on the shelf. Hopefully he’ll pay divedends tonight.

Young is by far the best player on this team. There isn’t a second best at this point. What is the issue with his thumb? He had it wrapped in the first half and struggled with his jumper, he even bricked a free throw. Once he took it off, he shot well.

Tonight will tell us a lot. SDSU reminds me of some past Pitt teams. They are tough defensively, good on the boards and while limited offensively, they score enough to win. They are older and tougher than Pitt is now. Uchebo and Randall will need to play well. Johnson and Newkirk will both need to play well on the offensive end for Pitt to stay in the game.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 11.25.14 @ 7:06 am

Keep in mind Pedersonn is “satisfied” with the state of Pitt football, at least says the Trib article.

But even skeptics would have to admit there’s pressure or prodding coming from somewhere.

I’ve always said Pederson has to take responsibility for the attendance at Heinz Field. It’s been lousy this season.

So…as much as we bleed blue and gold…the most powerful message to sent to Cornhole is to stay away from his rented stadium until the program begins to head in the right direction.

Three years of barely breaking even is not progress, despite how Pederson spins it.

Comment by TonyinHouston 11.25.14 @ 7:16 am

Robinson is definitely a step faster and a bit more explosive, but still too often he drives to the paint and his first instinct is to stop and look to pass it back out. Cam Johnson can definitely stroke it. Also confused by the Uchebo thing. It’s really… strange. Take the win and some of the positives, but obviously still some work to do defensively.

Comment by Carmen 11.25.14 @ 7:23 am

San Diego St beat BYU in 2OT 92-87. Don’t know how much depth they have but maybe they’ll be a bit tired tonight.

Comment by wbb 11.25.14 @ 7:40 am

Best 5 is going to be random the entire year. Really it’s going to be the best 3, Robinson, Young and Wright and then the 2 that were hot.

Comment by Wardapalooza 11.25.14 @ 7:41 am

DC33 said that Young is no Blair .. but who is? He was unique and a manchild in college. But Young can do a few things that Blair couldn’t … like shoot.

Comment by wbb 11.25.14 @ 7:42 am

Young is Pitt’s best player, but not if he has to log significant minutes at the 5.

I like Cam J. and Luther and both will contribute to this program, but the fact that they are playing now is a bad sign.

Hoping Pitt hangs tonight, but I’m preparing myself for a rough outing.

Wbb. Agree. Ok, Young has a shot. What if you moved Young to the 3 and used Artis, Jeter,Randall and Uchebo inside?

Comment by DC33 11.25.14 @ 6:53 pm

Tony, you must have some REALLY SENSITIVE hearing.
