12:30 pm on the syndicated ACC Network.

Which ever team loses will have a fan base barely holding on to a shred of hope for a very minor bowl. Well, I’m sure UNC could turn to basketball as they usually do. Albeit with the academic/athletic scandal seemingly creeping closer and closer towards impacting their sacred cow ram.

In a way this game is a simple and cliched one. For Pitt to win this, they have to disrupt UNC’s offense. They cannot let them get into a rhythm on offense. The tempo of the UNC offense depends on them moving the ball. They don’t simply come out and try to run all the plays at a speed pace. They increase the tempo and pace as they get success and confidence. That is why their heavy volume of penalties this year has been such a problem. Self-inflicted disruptions and slowed pace.

The problem for Pitt is how do they actually disrupt UNC’s offense?

Sitting in Pitt’s South Side practice facility Tuesday, defensive coordinator Matt House racked his brain trying to think…

Okay, that was completely out of context and unfair. But it was just way too easy when you use that as the opening sentence in a gameday story.

Last year, Pitt was able to contain the UNC offense for the most part with Aaron Donald up front. The problem was those damn special teams.

UNC on defense was humiliated by Miami’s Duke Johnson on the ground. There’s no secret that Pitt will be hammering away with James Conner, and that UNC will be keying on him. This is one of the times when Pitt and Coach Paul Chryst can’t try to be too tricky on offense. They need to use clock and keep UNC’s offense (and with that, Pitt’s defense) off the field as much as possible. Keep the ball on the ground and use the short pass judiciously.

Funny, NC also could use an Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. That would be how I title him. Will be interested to see if we are forward thinking and pursue quickly. My sense is that he holds out for a HC job for awhile as the axe will start to fall across the college football landscape for the next 3-4 weeks.

I would suggest that someone ask the HC about Conner being out at critical times because he is gassed. It is really obvious when you watch the games again. He pulls himself and when he does, he doesn’t take one play or two plays off to regain his composure. He takes a minimum of three off. What about conditioning?

Players are asked to give maximum effort for 5 seconds (average play time) and then rest for 20-30 seconds (unless operating in a hurry up offense which we don’t). So at 60 offensive plays at 6 seconds per play, we get 360 seconds or 6 minutes of maximum effort during a game.

My point about offensive being PARTLY to blame was just that. The biggest issue is on defense of course, but our predictability is killing us. Can anyone believe that miami kicker missed a straight on field goal of 35 yards? That would have been daggerville. Let’s keep hoping FSU wins out so we get an ACC representative in the first playoff. It is going to be embarrassing for one or two conferences that aren’t represented in the inaugural format.

Sorry, at least the Florida Administration is committing to hopeful excellence. They will pay Muschamp a $6M parting gift as a buyout. So, we can get rid of Pederson now for much less if we are truly committed to athletics. Chancellor?

Comment by dhuffdaddy 11.16.14 @ 12:10 pm

guys – I’m with all of you obviously on the AD and the DC. That’s easy. But, the equally obvious problem is that Chryst is intellectually and emotionally incapable of being the head coach of a top 25 D1 team (or top 50). Absolutely incapable on many levels – not just his boring and bumbling personality. Keeping him around, even if we replace the DC, only prolongs the inevitable. I understand all the issues with replacing a head coach and shot it does to recruiting but this guy does not have it and never will. Again, seems like a great guy and would be a great next door neighbor.

I didn’t comment once yesterday because I was sick to my stomach. I still am.

Comment by htp123 11.16.14 @ 12:20 pm

I read a post above somewhere in the 500+ posts about Conner getting “gassed”. Not sure if thats accurate, but I didn’t see Melvin Gordon (Wisc.) “gassed after running for a NCAA record 408 yds. on 25 attempts. He got stronger.

Iron Duke, I agree, our guys win too few of the individual battle and it definitely starts up front. I don’t think House is as bad a coach as he is a recruiter but how do you know for sure. He definitely did not do a good job vs GT.

I have been saying for years now we need to stockpile D-Ends and Linebackers, they have some but not any 4 and 5 star guys.

A basic rule of management is you don’t hire your friends cause they are harder to fire. Of course you never hire a guy without a track record. This is all on Chryst and of all his weaknesses appears to be the most egregious.

He may have dug a hole to deep to climb out of.

Comment by gc 11.16.14 @ 12:49 pm

I still don’t understand why he did not hire a high profile DC and kept House as Linebacker and D-Backs coach to give him more experience.

Recruiting has been abysmal since the hire.

Comment by gc 11.16.14 @ 12:51 pm

I have noticed that the O-line does not seem to open the same holes for James and Bennett. Also James does not freelance, meaning, he never cuts back against the grain when space is available. I think he is on a shorter leash.

Comment by gc 11.16.14 @ 12:55 pm

Excuses. Lose recruiting classes. Not with a dynamic coach. Look what KY and TN did with recruiting right out of the gate when they hired guys with balls and fire. All we do is make excuses for potato picker.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.16.14 @ 1:01 pm

Miami deserved to lose on uniforms alone!!

LOL

Don’t tell me about funky uniforms attract
recruits.

Winning football and a chance to go to
the pros attracts recruits.

Along with, of course, excellent recruiters.

Those gimmick uniforms are for suckers.

Miami was an embarrassment to the tradition of college football last night with those things.

One exception.

Oregon. They had enough money from what’s his name from Microsoft or whatever,

to transform their whole program.

They still look like hell, but they do win.

Wasn’t the uniforms though. It was money hiring coaches, recruiters, etc. etc. and they tacked on the uniform change.

Other people doing the uniform thing,

looks desperately desperate.

Comment by Dan 11.16.14 @ 1:17 pm

I also like the panther paw print decals on the back of the helmet.

Have always thought the marketing dept has missed out on making a panther paw print a big thing for Pitt.

Put it on billboards all across the state. Penn State has never used it much either.

Use it and own it.
Also, allthough not the mustard yellow I’d like, the Pitt script on that gold looks excellent, and actually looks a little like the gold from the first years of the script.

Excellent!!!

Comment by Dan 11.16.14 @ 1:19 pm

@ alco – Conneaut came to play and created turnovers – they were focused, committed and they had a plan for victory- big win for their area – WPIAL champ will be glad they don’t have to play Cathedral Prep – they are loaded

Comment by Erie Express 11.16.14 @ 1:20 pm

What, you want to talk about the game yesterday???

Bah, hah, hah

Not even the Pizza Pizza bowl this year.

Comment by Dan 11.16.14 @ 1:20 pm

Dan – You mean Nike. As in Phil. He is Mr. Oregon.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.16.14 @ 1:21 pm

p.s. whoever made the call on the Pitt script,

tell them to start wearing the gold pants on
the road.

Hell, if we’re gonna be a 4-8 program, let’s at
least go all the way and get the total
Pitt look!!!

LOL

Comment by Dan 11.16.14 @ 1:24 pm

Joe Lawrence. If Whitehead wasn’t coming I would agree . They need impact players who expect to play next year regardless of who is gushing in their living room.

Comment by Fred filopek 11.16.14 @ 1:33 pm

I pity the scalpers this Saturday at the Pitt game.

Comment by Frank MD 11.16.14 @ 1:36 pm

Let’s get this fixed!
First, fire Pederson and hire a AD is a dynamic program changer.
Second, fire House and hire an experienced SC with a proven recruiting talent.
Third, hire a recruiting coordinator that can light a fire under this mediocre program.
Fourth, demand that HCPC seasons every meal he eats with massive amounts of Tabasco sauce, since this is the only way I every see him developing that”fire in his belly” mentality that this team so dearly requires from it’s HC TO WIN FRICKIN FOOTBALL GAMES!

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.16.14 @ 1:44 pm

Cuse has nothing (bowl-wise) to play for this week. Pitt needs to run up the score no matter what and take this road show to Miami and hope PoD’s upset pick plays true.

Miami is already bowl eligible. Neat…

Comment by Erie Express 11.16.14 @ 1:48 pm

What a shame . Fraud Graham ‘s Sun Devils lost to the Beavers of Oregon State who are now 5 and 5. This defeat looks good on him.

Comment by Fred filopek 11.16.14 @ 2:08 pm

It’s uncanny how similar Chryst’s results are to Will Muschamp’s. Just exchange offense with defense. Both seem to be excellent coordinators following the Peter Principle.

Comment by 66Goat 11.16.14 @ 2:15 pm

Certain ignominy when your team is 13 th in the country and you lose to the Beavers

Comment by Fred filopek 11.16.14 @ 2:27 pm

@Pitt it is – If you watch this years games, it is obvious that Conner gets gassed. Don’t go by what they say and how great of shape they are in. Go with the game film. He pulls himself out at critical points and then stays out for awhile, not just one play. Look at it without biases and you will see this often during the year. It’s also not a criticism but rather an observation of watching the games a few times each.

The Wisconsin comparison is great. The defense wore down and made mistake after mistake in run support. For some reason, they respected the pass. I got to watch that game and it was oft repeated that Pellini was in his DB’s faces for incorrect angles and support, especially on the run that we saw on espn.

At upitt – We agree. Excuses. I work in a no excuse environment and it is refreshing. I wouldn’t say that Kentucky is ripping it up yet, nor is Tennessee. Kentucky just committed $100M to their stadium to support the new coach. Unless our Administration commits to the success of athletics, expect continued mediocrity.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 11.16.14 @ 3:21 pm

Muschamp went 7 games ABOVE .500 at Florida.

Still got the boot.

And that’s WITH AN SEC SCHEDULE.

Paulie is 2 games UNDER .500 against a liteweight schedule.

And should get the boot !

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 3:28 pm

But Cornhole needs relieved of his duties first.

Like before the New Year !!!

Give us an early Christmas(Chanukah) present Chancellor.

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 3:32 pm

How can an AD of a major university that is an last place of ALL universities in America in the Capital Cup standings……still have a job !!!

And one that hasn’t registered a SINGLE POINT in those standings for several years to boot.

Not even mentioning making Pitt a national laughing stock over the Heywood/Graham/Chryst fiasco.

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 3:37 pm

Instead, our coaching staff put slippers on. First, we missed a long FG (instead of trying for a 1st down on 4th and short) and UNC marched the length of the field for their 1st TD. 14 – 7. You could feel the MO shift.

Next drive, Pitt starts at our own 25 and moves 35 yards to the UNC 40 and HCPC chooses to punt on forth and short yardage
Comment by Erie Express 11.16.14 @ 7:59 am

Don’t think this clown staff has any idea whatsoever of what MO(mentum) in a game actually is.

You got a beast in the backfield, leading the nation in rushing, breaking a lot of Dorsett’s 40 year old records, AND YOUR PUNTING ON THE OPPONENTS 35-40 YARD LINE ON 4TH AND SHORT.

This is beyond LUDICROUS !!!

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 3:49 pm

Huffdaddy, Conners runs are usually 5-7 yards while dragging 3 guys along with him. Much more tiring than running against air like Gordon yesterday. The kid takes a beating I don’t mind him coming out of the game.

Comment by pd 11.16.14 @ 4:01 pm

With Muschamp’s firing today, at least two qualified DC’s are available – Muschamp himself and DJ Durkin who was the DC at FL under Muschamp.

If Upittbaseball is accurate with his prediction that Doc Holliday gets the FL job, then Marshall DC Chuck Heater may be a 3rd candidate available if he doesn’t follow Doc to FL.

All three would be a significant upgrade to our Outhouse.

HCPC needs to be proactive.

I’ve hired friends and neighbors in the past and some of them weren’t a good fit for our business. I politely and professionally showed them the door. It can be done – I’ve done it for the very same reasons HCPC needs to fire House – his job and future with his current employer (Pitt) depends on that very action.

SOP – Show Outhouse (the) Pinkslip

The SOP’s are so awesome. Very creative.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.16.14 @ 4:20 pm

If nothing is done with Cornhole and then Paulie.

We will know that Pitt bigwigs are just satisfied BEING in the ACC (sort of like Wake Forest) and are ok with just being competitive in some seasons. While collecting that $20/mil/per.

Again much like Wake Forest.

Who also btw recruits solid citizen type 2-3 star players.

Hey if that’s what they have planned. Fine, we’ll be watching the next few months to see which direction this ship is sailing.

And then decide whether or not, we want to board passage on it.

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 4:23 pm

How about Jerry O as d coord?

Comment by Sweet Caroline 11.16.14 @ 4:48 pm

Pitt guy,nfl exp!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 11.16.14 @ 4:57 pm

I like Jerry O – I mentioned him a week or so ago. The real benefit is four-fold: 1. He is learning from a great DC in Dick LeBeau 2. He doesn’t have to relocate to take on the new job 3. He has access to LeBeau almost every day and 4. He is a gutsy, hard nosed Pitt guy.

I wish I was making the decisions as the HC or AD – I’d make him an offer and oust House immediately.

SOP – Support Oslavsky (for) Pitt (DC)

Comment by Erie Express 11.16.14 @ 5:09 pm

I’m sure Jerry O would come at the right price, always a Pitt requirement.

Comment by pd 11.16.14 @ 5:13 pm

FIX the defense ! Get rid of House and recruit some JUCO defensive linemen and a JUCO middle linebacker. Players that will get noticed on the field .

Comment by Spindler's Spirit 11.16.14 @ 7:01 pm

Last comment/ after watching Miami play FSU the Coastal is no longer a weak sister. If you watched the game you saw the ACC championship game for at least the next four years. Miami is back and U of Florida is the major loser.

Comment by lost in the south 11.16.14 @ 7:10 pm

Fact: WE have no defense because of all the reasons given but mostly House and Chryst-House is his man.The lack of defensive recruiting will affect us way into the future.Any time you can put 30 points on the board and loose you need to hire a new D-coord—- for starts. Amen also to the Nebraska reject that put this disaster upon us .Yes Pederson.

Comment by Pitt 60 11.16.14 @ 7:56 pm

Florida- won’t be happy with avg.

Pitt- maybe next year will be the year

The difference between school like Florida and schools like Pitt is:

Those schools WANT to win..Pitt hopes they can win

Comment by Keith 11.16.14 @ 7:57 pm

dhuff… You get funnier by the day.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.16.14 @ 7:58 pm

Here’s the REALITY… Looking at the amount of UNDERCLASSMEN getting playing time… this Team has a chance of making some MAJOR STRIDES next year.

Two things could MARGINALIZE those strides. House continues as Defensive Coordinator. Chryst continues to play Voytik instead of Bertke.

Take away those two things and I like our chances.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.16.14 @ 8:02 pm

POD – Dear Lord you honestly said “Major Strides Next Year”

Weatern Psych would love a chance to spend 24 hours studying your brain. Haha.

You are a glass is half full. I’m a week dont even have a fuxking glass.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.16.14 @ 8:26 pm

Upitt… works just the same in High School. Play a lot of UNDERCLASSMEN one year… pretty much guarantees a PRETTY GOOD Team their Senior Year.

Experience goes a LONG WAY even if your name isn’t Conner or Boyd.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.16.14 @ 8:40 pm

pd – I agree that it is fine for Conner to take himself out of the game. That was my point though. He is taking himself out and not the coach. There are many opinions thinking it is Chryst that keeps him out during the most important parts of games. Not the case.

POD – sometimes the truth is funny because the reality and the depths to which the program has fallen under this leadership, is not funny. It is embarrassing. At least I haven’t been flagged for piling on. I put forth potential solutions instead of mock everyone that doesn’t spew out the same gibberish with the masses.

I don’t necessarily agree with everything I type. Some times, I just try to look at things differently. The legal profession trains you to take the opposite stance of what you might agree with, and figure it out from a different perspective.
