Open Thread: Duke-Pitt in the Slog

It seems I may be a sadist as well as a masochist. Not only am I heading out the door to attend the game today — highs today in the mid 40s, some wind and rain in the mix — I’m dragging my daughter with me. I know, get those “I’m reporting you to CFS,” jokes in before they get too stale.

To be fair, she wanted to go. Despite the weather. Despite the way Pitt has played. She enjoys going to the game and doing all the other activities. And disturbingly enough, hanging out with her dad and his friends. Strange kid.

I don’t know what to expect from this game. I don’t know how Pitt will come out for the game.

Just a couple quick links because I am just about out the door on the drive.

Go figure, after the volume of turnovers last week, Pitt is last in the ACC in turnover differential.  Duke on the other hand is tops.

Paul Chryst going to be Paul Chryst. It’s not about panicking. It’s not about desperation. It’s about maintaining an even keel.

Pitt coach Paul Chryst, though, isn’t trying to sell any sense of desperation.

“I think you’ve kind of got to be steady with wins and losses,” Chryst said. “I think you really have to be consistent. If you don’t make a big deal about a turnover in a 62-something game then you’re inconsistent. ”

You’re not helping them. It’s like parenting, you’ve got to be consistent.”

Consistency might be the approach from a day-to-day coaching standpoint, but, in the big picture, Pitt is teetering on the edge of not making a bowl game for the first time since 2007.

Admittedly, some consistency would be nice for the team. But you know what else would be nice? A win.

@ Shawn – Re: Mark Hudspeth for the next Pitt HC – Florida may be looking his way and changes at the top at Pitt need to happen first.

Good choice, but I believe a long shot. HCPC should have fired House after the GT game – since he didn’t last night, that I am aware of, we are mired in this mess for a while.

Good thing for each of us fans, we have choices…

wife not wite

Listened to HCPC speak after the game and answer questions – he won’t get rid of House. He thought our D was getting better in OT and that they would make a stop. Really? I didn’t… Easy for me to say after the game, but that is how I felt sitting in the stands.

Our D is awful – SOP…

I think college football games are fixed. Pitt was supposed to lose yesterday and did. They had to go out of their way to lose but got back on script. Speaking of script, perhaps the Pitt band can change the second T to a Y. I’m going on holiday for three weeks and will indulge. In a Pity party.

hmmmm.

Well if they are fixed. Why do we always mostly have to lose ?

Who up there among the football gods, hates Pitt so much. ha

Emel — Pitt had to literally go out of their way to lose this game. Pitt has to pay the price for being admitted to the ACC. Both The and Duke were ranked. The ACC needed more than one team in the top 25. Very cynical, I know. But do you have a better answer for Pitt’s futility. I would not be surprised if some key player’s transfer to Delaware, like Joe Flacco.

The The is Tech as in GA Tech.

Oh yea MM

In my predication yesterday I mentioned one of my factors in picking Duke to win was:

“Duke at 6-1 is the other marquee team of the ACC, certainly of the Coastal.

Acc needs a team with a good record for the ACC championship game to match up with Florida State.”

So yea I see where you’re coming from.
And of course being a bettor, there is always that element.

On not going for 2 after the first OT:
“I thought the defense was coming along. I liked their energy.”

Enough said.

Yeah I’m with all of you. Can’t believe HCPC said he thought the defense was coming on! That just shows either HCPC is out of touch or completely out of his league. In regards to a coaching change I agree there needs to be change at the top first I just wanted to throw a name out there that I thought would do great at Pitt. We need a real coach to pull this team together and fix our recruiting shortfalls.

I guess It makes you feel better to scapegoat the coaches after such a tough loss that Pitt shoulld have won. The reality is they can’t make the plays .Better players on defense will make all the difference. You cant polish a turd.

What a cop out. Might be true if it was an isolated incident and not a recurring movie. If only there was some way these poor coaches could get better players….
