Anyone watch Pitt the Packers-Seahawks last night? Man, I can’t believe they would risk their biggest playmaker — Tyler Boyd Percy Harvin — on punt kick returns. What were they thinking using a weapon like that in such a risky place? He can run the ball, he’s a receiver. A vital part of their offense and they risk him on special teams. Why, it’s almost like they want to try and use a versatile and talented player in multiple situations to help the team.

There will be an open thread for the game tonight. I’ll be on Twitter as usual. Probably Justin, but you never know when it comes to games and coping with toddlers.

Remember, Pitt isn’t the only one that needs to raise its game after a patsy first game. UMass is a recent leap to D-1, and was picked for dead last in the MAC. They weren’t exactly a real challenge for BC.

Both sides are going into this game with some confidence from their respective wins, but everyone on the outside just doesn’t know how good/bad/mediocre the teams really are.

Pitt players and coaches insisted this week that, despite the result, the Delaware game showed plenty of areas for potential improvement. Those flaws, masked against the Blue Hens, could be tested tonight.

Defensively, the Panthers will face one of the most dynamic quarterbacks they will see this year in senior Tyler Murphy. Murphy passed for 173 yards and rushed for 118 in Boston College’s 30-7 win against Massachusetts in the Eagles’ opener.

The Eagles had a lot of talent to replace this year at the offensive skill positions, but having a multifaceted threat such as Murphy makes it easier to break in new receivers and running backs.

“He can hurt you with designed runs, but also as it breaks down,” Chryst said of Murphy. “It’s oversimplifying it to a point, but it’s not because you’ve got to play disciplined and then you’ve got to get to the football. If you start overdoing it, then you become exposed and I think that’s where guys can really hurt you.”

Offensively, the biggest key for the Panthers will be whether or not they can run the ball even half as well as they did against Delaware. Boston College gave up 55 yards on the ground against Massachusetts, but finished 58th in Division I-A rushing defense last year, allowing 160.6 yards per game on the ground.

Both teams are going to want to run. BC has the added dimension of their QB being able to run very effectively. I do think there is a little underestimating what Voytik can do out of the pocket. He’s not a read option QB any longer, but he does know how to take off and run better than he has had to do to this point.

Still, Pitt defense and mobile QBs have been a toxic brew.

The antidote is a defense with speed, something Pitt lacked two years ago when Notre Dame’s Everett Golson ran for 74 yards, plus the game-tying 2-point conversion that sent the game into overtime.

Pitt appears to have a better mix of speed and experience on defense this season, with senior linebackers Anthony Gonzalez (a former quarterback) and Todd Thomas (a former wide receiver). Backup linebackers Bam Bradley and Nicholas Grigsby, who play in special packages, also run well.

Whether that translates into greater success has yet to be determined.

“We haven’t been tested yet,” coach Paul Chryst said. “We certainly will be this Friday night.”

Chryst said he and his staff addressed the issue, but he also won’t over-complicate it.

“You have to play disciplined,” he said, “and you have to get to the football.”

That will be the challenge. Pitt on defense — as well as offense — was so physically superior to the Blue Hens that they didn’t have to worry about being disciplined and fundamentally sound.

The encouraging thing, is that the defense only got one penalty last week. That unsportsmanlike conduct by David Durham. (Brief aside, I’ll politely disagree with Reed on the importance of that penalty. That was a weak call and ridiculously ticky-tack. Especially compared to some of the other stuff that is ignored.) That’s at least a positive indicator of the discipline played by the defense. No offsides. No holding. No interference.

I have trouble calling this a resumption of a rivalry. Not simply because it never really felt like one in the old Big East. I mean, the next time these teams are scheduled to meet will be in 2020. One more reminder that if the ACC is determined to keep the cross-divisional rivalry game for each year, they need to go to a 9 game schedule.

The coaches play up their respect for one another and their programs. Check that box.

“I have an unbelievable amount of respect for (coach) Paul (Chryst) and his staff,” he said. “Some people run it. Some people know how to run it. He knows how to run it.”

Then this: “That’s as good a running game as there is in America,” he said.

Quite an endorsement for a team that has yet to play an FBS opponent. But it does give a look into the kind of game Addazio and Chryst are expecting.

“Two programs that want to establish the run, two programs that want to play physically on defense,” Addazio said.

Before becoming head coaches, Addazio and Chryst ran successful ground games at Florida and Wisconsin, respectively. Neither wants to abandon those roots.

“Steve has done a great job adjusting and growing with the times,” Chryst said, “but still believes in running the football and the physical nature of the guys.”

Here’s a puff-piece on Coach Chryst from a couple weeks ago, that I’ve been meaning to link.

When Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson had trouble one day reaching Chryst out at the Rose Bowl shortly after hiring him, Chryst called back the next morning apologizing, saying that Wilson had pulled him aside for a film session that went late into the night.

“You never have to apologize to me for that,” Pederson said. “And I said that’s exactly what you want. [He’s] just totally committed to his players.”

Vinopal echoed that sentiment, saying his ability to approach Chryst is night and day from that of past coaches. Chryst likes to think his open-door policy is more than just a saying, and the success rate of others walking through those doors to Pitt speaks to that.

“I think you’re a better coach if you know your players better,” he said. “And I don’t think by any stretch that I’ve arrived or any of our coaches have arrived. I think we still need to do a better job of getting to know our players, and them getting to know us. And to me that’s part of the fun of it, and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying it.”

Neat.

Many of us are not questioning using Boyd on returns, my question was using him when we were up 28-0 against a team that had no chance of coming back.

Note there is a bit of a difference between a comeback being engineered by Aaron Rogers vs that kid from Greensburg Central

I agree with you on the Durham penalty. He didn’t direct it at the guy which I believe is what that rule requires.

I know we’re all concerned with Voytik’s long throws, but I saw a bit of the TV show Whiteboard this morning and they discussed Peyton Manning’s changes as he has aged. His throws are getting shorter. He now averages less than 7 yds a throw. His after the catch percentage is increasing. He is releasing the ball faster, often less than 2 secs after the ball is snapped.
Manning had a pretty decent year last year. If Voytik throws like Manning, I like our chances.

Till he got to the big game, then he just looked like an old man.

But I get it, the bombs by Savage were a thing of beauty, but Joe Montana and plenty of others won a lot of games with a short passing game.

As long as you have good YAC.

I believe the key to every game Pitt plays this year is if they can establish the run. And in this particular game, whatever team runs it better has a great chance of winning.

Comment by wbb 09.05.14 @ 10:39 am

@ wbb, on the “Boyd on Punt returns issue”, I’m not sure you can use that “comeback potential from Aaron Rodgers” as a rationalization for continually using Harvin on returns for Seattle.

It wasn’t the total beat down of the Broncos that we saw in the Super Bowl but the Seahawks looked unbeatable by game’s end due to their play on both sides of the ball. I don’t think any QB could have changed that equation last night.

It’s a good time to be a Seahawks fan. GO HAWKS

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.05.14 @ 10:52 am

Caw – Man! You don’t ask for much do you. Hell, I’d like Voytik to play like Dan Marino while we’re at it.:)

Chas you ignorant slut, I think we should use Boyd when it is absolutely necessary. Lets be a bit honest here – if PITT had a QB and RB the caliber of Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch in the offensive backfield then maybe we could afford to lose Boyd to injury. However, we don’t. I get the ‘play to win’, ‘ball in the best player’s hands’, ‘you can get injured at any time’ etc. sentiments but PITT is pretty much a one man team so far until proven otherwise. Hell, take Boyd away last season and we’re under .500.

Nothing happens in a vacuum – sorry, but with an unproven and not real accurate QB, I want the WR who is going to pull the QB’s ass out of the fire when poorly thrown passes are coming his way as much as possible every single game. Garner, Jones, Wuestner; all those guys are fine receivers but you and I know they ain’t going to make the almost impossible catches and get the YAC that Boyd does on a regular basis.

Lose Conner to injury for the season? Not good but we’ll be OK there. Lose Boyd and I think we see the season sliding downhill fast. He’s the one offensive player I’d say is the most indispensable over the last few years at PITT. To me you protect that asset until you see that it is possible to live without him. Ask me again in five games and I may feel differently but now I don’t like the risk.

Honest to God – I’d rather lose Voytik then Boyd. Come to think of it Voytik could be much like Joe Theismann was at ND when he played QB and returned punts also.

Re: Durham’s penalty. Chryst is all about smart and disciplined football. How do you think he felt about Durham pulling that stunt? I can tell you that I watched John Palermo rip Durham a new one for about three minutes on the sidelines after that penalty. It was a stupid thing to do. Also, I think he said something to the QB and that’s what the penalty was for. Look at the :16s mark of the video when Durham turns his body toward the bench but his head is pointed at the QB on the ground.

Chas, Durham’s penalty may have been ticky-tack but he was standing over the QB when the infraction occurred. That was the reason for the flag most likely, turn and walk away then flick the dirt off your shoulder pads thereafter, no penalty, IMO.

After Saturday, poor Durham has had a decision to make every day when taking his morning constitutional dump, what hole should he use? This due to the fact that when Palermo got a hold of him on the sideline after that penalty he spent the next 30 seconds or so in Durham’s facemask chewing him a new one that I doubt hasn’t healed over even yet today.

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.05.14 @ 11:04 am

Reed, great minds think alike, you beat me to the punch on this one, now we’re even again!

Right before I read Chas’ opinion on the matter in this thread, I posted the remarks below in your previous thread.

OK, debate REOPENED!

“BTW, one weapon we haven’t sighted as a potential difference maker for tonight is Boyd returning punts. We debated the subject to the extent that we pounded that subject into a puddle of mush earlier in the week, but I think Coach Chryst still is firmly intent on getting Boyd the ball in that manner.

All I know is that my position on the subject is substantiated if he takes one to the house this evening or,”Heaven forbid” he gets dinged up returning a punt again tonight, I’ll be labeled with that big “L” in the middle of my forehead for having such a stupid conviction.”

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.05.14 @ 11:12 am

Hey – I’ll be jumping up and down screaming and cheering Boyd on tonight no matter what he’s doing. He very well be the difference maker with his punt returns.

But I’ll still be nervous as hell when he’s doing it.

Comment by Reed 09.05.14 @ 11:17 am

And, Richard Sherman, arguably the best cornerback in the NFL, plays on the punt return team.

Comment by Dan 09.05.14 @ 11:30 am

I’m with you Reed. I am pretty anti-Boyd-on-Special Teams but if he takes one to the house tonight I’m going to be pretty happy about it.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 09.05.14 @ 11:45 am

First time I saw the actual film of the Durham infraction. Very weak, I have seen a lot worse that does not get called. Hopefully, lesson learned.

Comment by gc 09.05.14 @ 2:40 pm

By the way, what is the difference between what Durham did and the guys beating their chest after making a play, not sure I understand the distinction.

Comment by gc 09.05.14 @ 2:42 pm

I heard that Durham trash-talked the QB after the sack. Maybe that drew the penalty.

I contend the way to stop a running QB is tackle him whether he has the ball or not. Not much downside to guessing wrong on a play-action. Standing there trying to decide who has the ball is always a loser.

The key to the game will be half-time adjustments by BC. Pitt will maul them in the first half. PC should have a second half game plan that anticipates BC adjustments.

Comment by 66Goat 09.05.14 @ 3:44 pm

66goat, 2nd half adjustment=keep mauling them
