Welcome to the Dead Zone

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chas @ 7:24 am

May. The very, very quiet time for football and basketball. Outside of recruiting stuff and the police blotter the real news is spotty.

It’s filler time. Speculation on how teams will do. How the depth chart will shake out. Broader NCAA issues. Taking cheap shots at other programs screw-ups —  hello there, Rutgers. The ever popular talk of bringing back the Pitt script and/or old colors. Looking back at the stats and record over the past year to see what can be extrapolated

It’s moments like this when I almost miss the expansiopocolypse. Almost.

About the only non-recruiting tidbit of news that is still to come with Pitt is who Jamie Dixon will hire to be an assistant.

Other than that, there’s debating what is it about Steven Adams that gets under the skin of opposing NBA players. It is impressive.

Does this really work? Can someone try and get really drunk and report back on this method?

Where were these Steve Adams’ skills last year? We could have beaten Louisville, Michigan, Wichita St (maybe) and a host of others had the opposing big men been ejected.

Wonder if Jamie is waiting to see if Calipari goes to the NBA before replacing Slice …. maybe he won’t have to.

Draft game … for every draft pick before Donald is chosen, taken a teaspoon of yeast

Same for every round before Savage is picked

Comment by wbb 05.06.14 @ 8:52 am

ok, unimportant stuff, but how bout that helmet change last year- classic. Not only the stripe, but the deeper gold color looks cool. so are they gonna change the pants color to match (lighter yellow is kind of gay imo).

And re bb, this may turn out to be an important period depending on the assistant hire, and whether or we add another player… Wonder what’s going on?

B10 trying to drum up support in the east now. From what I know, MD and Rut fans not jumping up and down at new league. Will eastern players like the new league?

Comment by Frank MD 05.06.14 @ 9:06 am

B10 will hold men’s tournament in DC in 2017. I think this is payback for ACC holding their tournament in DC right after UMD leaves the conference. There are a lot of mid-west alums in DC area so it will be interesting to see how the crowd looks. How long before B10 or ACC reaches out to UConn to lock up NYC market?

Comment by CalvinHobbes 05.06.14 @ 9:41 am

ACC needs to get that ACC Cable channel going. There are more customers (and growing) in the ACC footprint than in the B10 footprint.

Comment by Frank MD 05.06.14 @ 10:25 am

I don’t see Calipari going to the Lakers. They are at least two years away from winning anything. They just don’t have the players. Cal recognizes that the NBA is a player’s league and a coach can only do so much.

Calipari would leave KY for the right opportunity, one where the roster was built to win now. He has issues with the NCAA and the crazy expectations at Kentucky, so leaving isn’t out of the question. He also would love another shot at the nba.

He has an absolutely stacked team for next year. If the right NBA job opens up after next year (or maybe even this year, Golden State) he’ll go. Just won’t be Lakers this year.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 05.06.14 @ 10:38 am

Shame we couldn’t get another yr out of Adams. I guess making millions was better than philosophy class.

Comment by alcofan 05.06.14 @ 10:39 am

I don’t think getting Uconn for the B1G would lock up the NYC market. As Syracuse is NY states’s team and in hoops they’re strong in NYC as well.

And in football, ND trumps everyone in NYC for football. And we got them too, partly now, fully down the road.

As for Buttgers, more of the same…..foot in mouth problem….for them. Love it !

Heard on the radio down here, that the Lakers have added Huckleberry Hound to their coaching candidate list.

That would hit this state like a tidal wave if it happened ! haha 🙂

Comment by Emel 05.06.14 @ 10:48 am

Apparently Ben Howland is the leading candidate for the vacant Oregon State coaching job.

Hope he get’s it !

@Emel

Duh for me. But, who is Huckleberry Hound?

Comment by pmdH2P 05.06.14 @ 10:57 am

@Emel or anyone. Wasn’t Pitt suppose to have a transfer coming from Oklahoma State??

Last year, maybe a year and a half ago??

Did that not happen, or is he sitting out a year, or is he on the team and I never realized it??

Neverming, I just realized, Mostrella.

What’s the money line on whether Dixon finds a QUALIFIED REPLACEMENT for Rohrssen before next Season?

With each day that passes without news of a hiring, I’m thinking that Jamie may decide he doesn’t need a replacement and is just fine with things the way they are.

Roy Boy Williams….aka…Huckleberry Hound

Many… including the author of another Pitt Blog… have been convinced that if Jamie wants him… all he has to do is dial up Tom Herrion and it’s a DONE DEAL.

While I wish it were the case, not so sure.

Got to question… if Herrion were in line for the job and anxious to take it… why hasn’t it gone down?

Comment by PittofDreams 05.06.14 @ 11:32 am

1618, don’t know any gays that would be caught dead in that color yellow.

After the first 3 commits happened quickly, I thought this recruiting year might go differently than last. Now it seems we are back to waiting for the floodgates to open after Pitt holds its June camp for high school prospects. Didn’t HCPC get like 9 commits in 10 days around the end of June last year?

This is a very important class for HCPC. He has built some momentum, now needs to sustain. QB is critical, as is just about every position on defense.

Comment by Iron Duke 05.06.14 @ 11:34 am

We offered another kid for the 2015 class.

This one is 6’8″ 235

5/5/2014 – 2015 PF Jarred Reuter (6-8, 235, 2.7 stars) | Position Rank: 30 has received an offer from Pittsburgh.

Espn & Scout rates him a 3.

Personally, believe Rohrssen has A LOT to do with the improved performance of Pitt’s Basketball Team this past year.

Guess Kentucky would agree.

Absolutely CRITICAL for Jamie to find a Qualified Coach capable of filling Slice’s shoes both in Recruiting and In-Game Coaching.

Otherwise, another SLIDE year awaits… in my humble opinion.

Comment by PittofDreams 05.06.14 @ 11:47 am

Unless we get that USC transfer and that Elijah Stewart from LA, I expect a SLIIIIIIIDE regardless.

However who knows, since all the top teams have lost most of their top players, to the NBA Draft.

Perhaps JD is waiting for an asst. who can bring some immediate help with him.

Comment by Emel 05.06.14 @ 12:05 pm

pod- not sure what to think on that, but I don’t really believe slice was much of a factor at all in our play this past year. I think he’s a recruiter, plain and simple, and we need to replace him with another very good recruiter, a guy who can coach too would be icing on the cake.

Comment by 1618mt 05.06.14 @ 12:12 pm

@Emel

Thanks. I forgot that you are in NC. Was trying to figure out who HH would be in Pennsy.

Lamar Patterson was invited to the NBA combine. No invite for Zanna. I didn’t even know the NBA had a combine.

Comment by Nick 05.06.14 @ 12:57 pm

D. Blair looked pretty impressive vs. San Antonio the other night. His hands are huge…looks like a baseball and not a basketball in his hands..Good to see Pitt players (Adams too) doing well at the NBA level…Anyone know if Sam Young, Gil Brown, Gary Mcghee and Wannamaker are playing

1618…

Rohrrsen seemed to take a more active role than other Assistants during games.

Saw him regularly coming onto the Court immediately during timeouts along with Dixon.

Seemed to play a major complementary role to Dixon during the Court Side strategy sessions.

Comment by PittofDreams 05.06.14 @ 2:55 pm

@PittofDreams, dead on.

Can’t honestly remember is Rohrsen did that his first time around……

but definitely saw him all year being quite active for an assistant. Thought it was great, thought Jamie (any coach) could use some extra thoughts on things.

Comment by Dan 05.06.14 @ 7:45 pm

***please note***, I put (any coach) in there, next to Jamie. Not picking on Jamie. I know some are over sensitive sometimes. LOL

Comment by Dan 05.06.14 @ 7:46 pm

Chas – saw you tweeted that Mostella is heading to Tennessee. Is that confirmed? Is he even eligible?

Pitt needs to start landing and getting something out of the top end guys they’ve been in on. Close, but no cigar so far.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 05.07.14 @ 7:07 am

Dan – Mostella is the kid who had committed to OK State before committing to Pitt. Looks like he’s on the move again.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 05.07.14 @ 7:10 am

Kentucky just offered Cheeck Diallo, a 6’9 4/5 star who reportedly has Pitt as his current favorite. He plays on the same HS team as 2015 Pitt commit Damon Wilson who was recuited by Brandon Knight. He is from the NYC/NJ area and sure that Slice knows him well.

From a recruiting standpoint in both FB and BB, it is not easy being a Pitt fan …. but on the other hand, history has shown us that in both sports, a team can do very well by coaching up 3 stars. We have 3 4-star guards committed the next couple of years (in fact, Heron is rated 5 star by some) … and IF they honor their current commitment, Pitt can succeed by sourrounding these guys with solid fundamental 3 stars who have been with program a few years.

Comment by wbb 05.07.14 @ 7:27 am

@@@@@@@

Uconn the most corrupt BB program in the old BE belongs
in the BT not the ACC. BT will find out as Rutgers
gets pounded in FB that nobody really cares about college
sports in NJ.

Comment by JR 05.07.14 @ 7:45 am

With regard to Slice, I don’t disagree that he gave a fair amount of game day input, along with BK, what I am suggesting is that he didn’t really impact the performance of the team. I base this assumption on the fact that we performed just as well without him, also keeping in mind his failure as a HC. Regardless, it would be very easy to replace Slice from a sheer coaching standpoint, but more challenging to replace him as a recruiter.
