No, Durand, No!!!

This sucks. This really sucks.

Hate this.

Durand Johnson, has made such strides this year. Still prone to launching too many 3s, his all-around game has really improved.

He was Pitt’s first guy off the bench for a reason.

Hell of a time to start experimenting, but that will be what happens for Pitt and Coach Dixon. Going forward, Pitt has a couple options.

Chris Jones will see more playing time and opportunity. I don’t think it will be as simple as sliding him into the spot and minutes Johnson had.

The other thing to expect is Jamel Artis and/or Mike Young may find themselves getting a crash course in showing just how versatile they can be. Playing a bit on the wing and guarding small forwards.

The other way to go is more Josh Newkirk and having Pitt play more of a 3-guard group. Not as much size in the front court that way, but more speed.

Detrick Mostella has to be kicking himself, because this would have been a huge opportunity for him to slide in to the spot.

Feel for the kid. He was playing well. The rest of the guys have to embrace this opportunity.

Comment by Pittastic 01.12.14 @ 4:22 pm

Where is Mostella? Is he playing at Pitt next year?

Comment by DJ 01.12.14 @ 4:24 pm

ESPN Sports is fast to announce Johnson’s injury but failed to mention Pitt’s blowout of Wake Forest yesterday. When it’s bad news Pitt is it, otherwise the airways are silent.

I hope DJ will have a complete recovery; he will be missed.

H2P

Comment by MariettaMike 01.12.14 @ 4:35 pm

Too bad for Durand. When it happened, it looked like more than just a minor twist. Having been through two torn ACL’s myself, I really feel for him.

Comment by Outlaw 01.12.14 @ 4:35 pm

Mostella never got the grades in order. He is still in prep school. Hopefully he will join the team for 2014-15.

Comment by Chas 01.12.14 @ 4:37 pm

Hope DJ has a speedy recovery and comes back even better next year.

This will be a reason for Gorman and others not to put Pitt in top 25.

Comment by CalvinHobbes 01.12.14 @ 4:48 pm

Really feel for Durand. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

What sort of access does the athletic department have to UPMC’s resources? Surely there are top notch surgeons and rehab staff that normal varsity trainers can’t hold a candle to.

Comment by MikePITT 01.12.14 @ 4:52 pm

I wish him a speedy recovery. The good news is he’s going to get great care in Pittsburgh.

Now, next man up. And, if DJ is Mike Cook, then someone has to be Levance Fields.

Comment by Pitt Dad 01.12.14 @ 5:06 pm

Damn. Among all the alternatives mentioned here and elsewhere, also maybe we can try more going big with uchebo and zanna together? Regardless feel terrible for DJ and no matter what we need the freshmen to now grow up even faster then they already have!

Comment by DD 01.12.14 @ 5:22 pm

On a complete tangent, charles smith is on the front page of CNN…

Comment by DD 01.12.14 @ 5:24 pm

That sucks for DJ and the team. Wish him well with the patience and hard work he will need. He injected more energy into the team than most of the rest of guys combined. We’ll need someone to step up in that department as well as the production side.

Likely more shot opportunities for Mike Young I guess is the very slimmest of silver linings in this bad news.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 01.12.14 @ 5:27 pm

Comment by velvil 01.12.14 @ 5:28 pm

I feel really bad for him because he was playing so well. He loses what was quickly becoming an excellent season. The team loses a their offensive sparkplug. I hope his recovery goes well and I hope to see him on the court again as good as ever. You’ll be missed.

Comment by Justinian 01.12.14 @ 5:31 pm

Chris Jones has got to step up. He has shown some shooting ability, but needs to show more. Plus he has got to catch up with the speed of the game on defense.

I’m pissed off with the Bergen Record, NJ newspaper. Not ONE word about the Pitt game.

Remember Jones and a number of other Pitt players come from or have played in North Jersey/metro NY including Mike Young.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 01.12.14 @ 5:33 pm

So sorry to hear about DJ’s injury. No reason that he still can’t recover and be a major factor next season. He was finally coming to understand the entire game and just how much work it takes to shine. Grit your teeth and work hard kid in your recovery, you have it in you. Translates into more minutes for Cam and Kirk! H2P! UPone

Comment by UPone 01.12.14 @ 5:35 pm

Just watched the replay on ESPN3.com. It did looked really ugly at first (5:29 left in the game), but then he got up and shot the free throws before coming out. He was shaking the leg and rubbing it quite a bit during the FTs. Tough kid, usually you see guys writhing in pain on the floor.

Back on the horse Tuesday, which is probably a good thing.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 01.12.14 @ 5:49 pm

I can see both Jones and Artis splitting time at the 3. This will give them more experience. Another scenario is the 3 guard offense with Wright, Robinson and Nuke.

Obviously, this really sucks but due to its depth, this team can better handle something like this better than most.

Comment by wbb 01.12.14 @ 5:52 pm

Bad news is BAAAD NEWZ!! So, I took a look at GTECH to see what’s happening in Atlanta.

Travis Jorgensen a promising freshman getting limited playing time (4pts per game) is out for the year.

Key starter Robert Carter a 6ft 8″ PF (10 points per game and a major force in rebounding is out for the year as of early January.

DJ will come back and be a solid player next year!
In the meantime we can play in the ACC and do well against the competition level that seems to exist this year. Syracuse will be a tough one, however, The Orange seem to lose their cool when they see P…I…T…T on a uniform.

Comment by isnore 01.12.14 @ 7:05 pm

“ESPN Sports is fast to announce Johnson’s injury but failed to mention Pitt’s blowout of Wake Forest yesterday. When it’s bad news Pitt is it, otherwise the airways are silent.”

Funny how that works MM.

Check it out, this is in Headline’s on ESPN’s front page of their NCAAB page.

link to espn.go.com

I guess Gorman and others will now use this, as another excuse….not to rank PITT.

Comment by Emel 01.12.14 @ 7:29 pm

Stanford just beat 17th ranked Oregon at Oregon. 3rd Ranked tOSU lost at home to Iowa, 2nd loss in a row, and ranked Colorado lost at Wash.

Just be patient, people.

However on the FB side …. new ACC entry just hired the DC from Georgia to be its DC. And Pitt probably couldn’t even get Bowling Green’s DC if it wanted to … and PC got over his shyness.

Comment by wbb 01.12.14 @ 7:29 pm

The way our players were being pushed to the floor by some of the thugs of Wake I was fearful that Zanna and Lamar would get hurt. As if you remember both of them went down, lack a sack of potatoes after a mugging by a Wake thug.

I was hoping he would get them off the court.

Comment by Emel 01.12.14 @ 7:32 pm

Those refs let that game get totally ‘out of hand’, yesterday.

They should have called some blatant fouls, awarded the ball to PITT, after the FT’s. And also should have went over to their coach and warn him.
Technicals as well.

Comment by Emel 01.12.14 @ 7:34 pm

Somehow getting ranked now, with Durand Durand being lost for the season is somewhat….

anti-climatic. I’m sick .

Comment by Emel 01.12.14 @ 7:35 pm

I saw something that Durand will be operated on within a week… and have a 9-12 month recovery period. That means he should be back between the start of next season and this time next year. Also, once back it takes a while to get your game up to speed.

Dixon had been playing Newkirk some at SG recently as far as getting depth… and also Artis some at SF, as well as getting Jones minutes when he could. So, I imagine Dixon will play this by ear…. trying all three of these possibilities and going with whatever is working.

Will probably vary on a game by game basis, depending on matchups and who is doing well where.

Comment by Zaratoughda 01.12.14 @ 7:43 pm

DJ will be missed for sure…he was the spark of the bench…newkirk, artis, and especially young NEED to step up….I guess we’re lucky that the team has depth…lets get past GT and then do what we do to the cuse…and beat the hell out of them!!…h2p!

Comment by Keith 01.12.14 @ 7:49 pm

No such headlines on CBS Sports NCAAB page.
Usually injured players on non-ranked teams don’t make the headlines. And CBS has us #23 in their won rankings.

ESPN seems to take special joy in PITT ills.

Comment by Emel 01.12.14 @ 7:52 pm

EMel penn state coach franklin has 22 commits and has offered 4 more the NCAA has said penn state can have only 20 this year please explain WTF is going on how he will get away with 26 or more some help please.

Comment by Frankcan 01.12.14 @ 8:07 pm

As well as Pitt is playing, injuries are a huge part of the game. So sorry for DJ. What a year he has had. An ACL can be anything from 9-18 month’s depending on the damage to other parts of the meniscus which is always torn when the ACL goes.

Hope he hasn’t been hanging with Steeler O lineman. Bad luck has a way of following them!

Comment by Dan 72 01.12.14 @ 8:08 pm

Farnkcan, I the only thing I can figure is that he must be banking on the NCAA cutting them another break. Unless he’s bringing in a few of his Vanderbilt recruits at the expense of some of the players that O’Brien’s recruits.

Comment by Justinian 01.12.14 @ 8:18 pm

No idea Frankie.

Just some more, (shall we say) odd going ons.

Frankin & Pedo State have ODD written all over them.

Comment by Emel 01.12.14 @ 8:27 pm

Just like with us last year, I’m sure there will be transfers or non qualifiers that allow him to hit that 26 without going over the full allotment of 70 or 75 this year. Can’t remember which one since they lessened the penalty.

Comment by rhyno527 01.12.14 @ 9:37 pm

Godspeed Durand J. You can come back stronger and quicker. I would expect him to get a stronger upper body while he rehabs. Hopefully, the damage is minimal once they get a look inside.

As far as Franklin and scholarships, it remains amazing to me that the headlines are reading how he has “flipped” some recruits he offered at Vandy. They were three stars. I would expect that he conveniently loses contact with a few recruits to bring in his guys. The university will manipulate the numbers of recruits just like all big time programs do. I do think there is at least one school that has over 30 verbals already. I mean seriously people, the recruits are getting exploited and just don’t get it.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 01.12.14 @ 9:42 pm

Wbb – UGA DC widely considered overrated and has been on the hot seat for a while. Not exactly a huge get for Louisville

Comment by Atlanta Panther 01.12.14 @ 9:55 pm

The more important story with the Lville DC hire is that they are clearly serious about football success…$1M per year for a DC! They are already spending that new ACC money….

Very bad break for DJ and Pitt. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Comment by HbgFrank 01.12.14 @ 10:06 pm

There is no way to sugarcoat this. This is a big loss. For a team that has traditionally struggled on offense, Durand Johnson was instant offense off the bench. If his D was up to speed would very likely be a starter.

Unfortunate for him, but in sports someone else’s misfortune is another person’s opportunity. next man up…

Frankcan, perhaps Franklin is counting on a few transfers or possibly pulling a few offers that O’Brien made. but the math does not add up…

Comment by Pap76 01.12.14 @ 10:09 pm

dhuffdaddy i know but the NCAA say penn state can only have 20 this year.
do you mean he will kick some of bills commits from this year to the curb .
all i know is on signing day he should not sign more then 20
if he does some one explain how he did it our i will blow my top.

Equally disappointing is that he likely will not be able to get a medical RS since he has played 50% + 1

Hope that the team responds. DJ was a big spark coming of the bench.

if your in the mood to get ticked off Seth Davis said he would rank LA. Tech 25 and PITT still wouldn’t be ranked.

If your in the mood to get really ticked off check out La. Tech’s RPI and losses:

RPI: 101

-losses to Louisiana Lafayette and St. Mary’s

-Best win vs oklahoma

Comment by rhyno527 01.12.14 @ 10:39 pm

rhyno, UL Lafayette has 5 losses, and their victory was at La Tech. In other words, Mr Davis is busting our chops and not being taken seriously

Comment by wbb 01.12.14 @ 10:46 pm

Ultimately he is allowed to sign as many as he wants as long as he doesn’t go over the max total on roster by fall practice. This is something the SEC has done for years. The max per year is sort of arbitrary…it mainly basis itself on you having a full roster and losing a particular number due to graduation or exhausting eligibilty.

This is a bad break. Now we find out how good our senior leadership is. Time to be thankful it wasn’t a starter, pick up what is left, and keep the wins coming. Wishing DJ a speedy and complete recovery. We will be counting on you next year.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 9:02 am

I see nuke getting more minutes off of this and I think maybe Uchebo might need to see some minutes now too. Zanna isn’t big enough to play at the level needed for more than 30 minutes a game. He will wear down over the course of the season without more help.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 9:10 am

Honestly I don’t get how rankers like Seth Davis completely minimize a team’s losses. To me a loss to a bad team is much more telling about a team than a team being hot one night and upsetting a better team. Also, if you are going to go by the quality win thing, then there is no way Ohio State should be ranked either. If Lamar makes his FT’s vs. Cinci then I’m sure Pitt is a lot higher, even though Pitt would be the same exact team. Lack of respect gets more annoying by the day.

DJ loss sucks with him starting to play well. At least there are few guys who will be able to step up. Newkirk will be able to get more minutes, which was going to probably happen anyways has he has been getting better. Artis will probably benefit the most. Better to get him lots of time now so he’s ready for March.

Comment by Wardapalooza 01.13.14 @ 9:12 am

Best of luck on your surgery & recovery. Looking forward to watching you play agian next year.

Comment by The TRUTH 01.13.14 @ 10:26 am

Very sad news. I have really enjoyed watching Durand grow into a solid performer who was developing into a complete player. He was known for instant offense and streaky shooting. He could be frustrating to watch when his shot was not falling or he was forcing shots.

I have noticed a more focused player recently. A team player going after loose balls, getting rebounds being more physical on defense. It looked to me that he was developing into a leader for the future. He really seemed to buy into the team and give his all.

At this point, best wishes and God’s blessing for a successful surgery, complete and speedy recovery and a return to form for next season.

Who will step up? My guess is Artis!

Comment by Jason 01.13.14 @ 10:32 am

Injuries are a part of the game. This is a big loss, but must be overcome. We have never had better depth. Really tough that this happened this week before G Tech and Syracuse, have to regroup quickly. Freshman need to take and make more threes.

We are 15-1 in the ACC, impossible mot to be ranked.

Does not matter if we don’t beat G Tech, we will drop like a rock.

Interesting how Franklin called out Pitt in his conference but not Ohio State or the other leaders in the B1G. Really uncalled for. He should be calling out Maryland and Rutgers, PSU gets more players from their turf than ours. What a putz.

Comment by gc 01.13.14 @ 10:32 am

GTECH was up 15 on the Irish and almost gave it up but secured the game in the last 2 minutes. As long as we don’t take them for granted our D will make life miserable for the wreck and we will pull away to a nice win.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 10:41 am

OMG… who cares if we are ranked. Everything works out in March one way or another… which is why no one wants to vote Pitt into the top-25. History says they don’t deserve it – and they don’t.

What a huge loss. Season is marred for sure.

Comment by John Ramella 01.13.14 @ 10:48 am

PSU really is a paper tiger, JoePa’s record in the B1G– tOSU-2 wins, 12 losses, Mich-3 wins, 10 losses, Iowa-3 wins, 9 losses, Wisky-2 wins, 7 losses.

Forget PSU, we need to compete with FSU, Clemson,Miami, and Va Tech.

Comment by gc 01.13.14 @ 10:56 am

JoePa overall B1G record—- 33 wins, 56 losses

Franklin’s strategy better be more than recruiting a couple of players from WPA, LMAO

Comment by gc 01.13.14 @ 11:00 am

Gorman has us at 18, I think he is coming around to my way of thinking.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 11:11 am

DJ’s loss is big but shouldn’t define the season. His production off the bench will certainly be missed but that just means someone will need to step up. Jones has looked capable when he is in the game and Artis, Newkirk and Young are getting stronger every game. I’d be shocked if Pitt didn’t make its season’s debut in the Top 25 this week, at least the Coach’s Poll. I know rankings don’t really mean anything but it can’t hurt recruiting/team moral to see the Panthers back in the polls. I think we take care of GT but the lack of DJ’s offense could prove to be the difference against the Cuse. H2P

Comment by Snacks 01.13.14 @ 11:14 am

@ john ramella, what are you a hoopie or an orange troll? What history are you referring to that says we don’t belong in the top 25.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 11:15 am

Terrible break for Durand and the team. Hope he puts as much passion and work into his rehab as he did his game. I’m sure he’ll be back in a big way next season.

I don’t see either Young or Artis as small forward material. They both play a little big for that position and don’t quite have the slashing ability or threat of slash, that you normally would want from the perimeter. I would expect Cam Wright and Jones to play 3 when Patterson does not and that would open up more Newkirk at the 2. I think Josh has a chance now to perhaps be the spark guy off the bench that Durand was.

But damn, I really feel bad for DJ…

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.13.14 @ 11:19 am

@snacks ,I would be way surprised not to appear in both polls as we are arguably top 20 right now. Cincinnati has done well and our recent margin of victory has been impressive. Besides pollsters don’t want to look bad if we upset the Orange which is entirely possible given our history.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 11:19 am

Best of luck going forward Durand. You will be missed! Let’s watch and see what J.D. does to replace D.J. H2P!

Comment by Oakland-boy72 01.13.14 @ 11:23 am

@silverpanther, There is no question that this is an opportunity for Nuke. The key is to minimize the defensive lapses and bring energy offensively. He seems like a great kid but he is a freshman so better this happen now than a week or 2 before the tourney. Uchebo looked to be moving a little better Saturday. What was with his shorts being so long? It would be a nice help up front if he could add some quality minutes.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 11:27 am

All things considered, this is probably an opportunity for Chris Jones more than anyone. I think he’s looked pretty good (certainly not bad or out of place) in the few minutes he’s played. So we’ll see if he gets more PT and can contribute.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.13.14 @ 11:33 am

Silverpanther, I would be very surprised if Jones gets the extra minutes as he has what I heard as a serious hand injury that will also require surgery after the season. If he hadn’t already used his redshirt I don’t think he would be playing at all. That isn’t to say he won’t get some additional minutes but I can’t see it being many.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 11:47 am

Gotta love ESPN.com. I don’t even know why I read it anymore. Lead story at the moment is on great basketball arenas with a photo shoot of 12. Of course the Pete is not one of them. Am I surprised? Yes. Should I be? Of course not.

Comment by Pitt Dad 01.13.14 @ 11:48 am

I saw somewhere that the floor was particularly slippery on Saturday. Does anyone know anything about that.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 11:49 am

Silver, I was thinking Young and Artis for their shooting 3’s, not necessarily to play the 3. I have seen them on the floor together, can’t remember whether they were playing the 4 and 5 or 3 and 4.

I think you are right about Jones for defense, but Young and Artis have hit 3’s, both have nice looking shots, as does Newkirk.

No one can replace Johnson’s total package, as a team they need to replace his production.

Comment by gc 01.13.14 @ 11:53 am

RE: Uchebo

Could the limp be the brace limiting his range of motion? In warm-ups (without the brace) he seems to move much better.

RE: Line-ups without Durand Johnson (or, who is the Patterson/Wright back-up?)

I can see Artis moving to the 3, but not this year. He can handle the ball and has shooting range. It is his defense that would be the problem.

Wright can defend the 1 to 3, can drive, has decent mid-range shot. He needs to be a 3pt threat or defenses will dare him to shoot. Although Pitt will sacrifice size, he is the best option at the 3, right now. That would give Newkirk and Robinson more time on the court together.

Chris Jones looked good in the 2-3 zone in Raleigh (but I think he was playing in the top of it). His has shown a desire to get to the rim to go along with being a real threat from 3 (if his hand is healthy). Pitt does not lose size with Jones. But with a gimpy hand, could he be a liability on the glass?

One other thing…
How do Pitt’s upcoming opponents gameplan for Pitt without DJ (50% minutes, 25% of shots taken, 22% usage on all offensive possessions)?

Comment by xfmrman 01.13.14 @ 11:59 am

I don’t know about the floor, can’t remember anyone else slipping. When Johnson was fouled, he was kind of shoved which caused him to hop to the right, he landed awkwardly and off balance, his foot jammed and looked to slide forward. It didn’t look that bad at the time. Knew he was hurt, one of the assistants told him to go to the locker room, thought they would just ice it down.

Comment by gc 01.13.14 @ 12:00 pm

SOS22:

Where did you see that Gorman has Pitt at 18?

Comment by xfmrman 01.13.14 @ 12:05 pm

@gc, Well those guys (Young and Artis) hit shots on broken plays or on easy spot ups. I don’t see Dixon calling plays in their direction and playing 3 means you are on the perimeter more and in a position to shoot 3’s. So those plays will go to whoever is in that position or probably to the 2 guard or Patterson even if he is playing the 4. But yeah, someone will have to pick up DJ’s production off the bench.

Hadn’t heard about a Jones injury but yeah, 6’6″ on the perimeter is something that Dixon is going to strongly consider. He has looked fine physically when he is in there.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.13.14 @ 12:05 pm

Actually, it has nothing to do with Pitt’s tourney appearances.

Pitt has pretty much been in top 10 and top 20 consistently over the last 10 years or so.

So, what’s the argument for that? Ranked #1 and #2 several years.

Frankly, as much as we discuss Pitt hoops and bitch about not getting to the final four, we should count our blessings.

351 Divison 1 teams. We’ve been to the Sweet 16 many times, the Elite 8, and of course being to the tournament itself 12 out of the last 13 years or whatever that is.

Not to mention tons of huge wins against top teams during the season. Winning the conference championship several times in the best basketball conference.

Have we been bounced early a few times, yep, well documented by all of us on here. Very disappointing.

But those next years we were ranked in all of the preseason polls.

So, no, our tourney record has nothing to do with it.

It’s actually a combination of things.

I would say, last year’s specific tourney ouster, with the combination of the loss of Steven Adams, the loss of the point guard and really not have beaten anyone yet, would all have to do with it in peoples minds.

We’re not 3-0 in the ACC, and this afternoons polls will reflect this I believe. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pitt was ranked 20-22.

We beat GTU, and upset Syracuse, we’ll be in the top 15 by this time next week.

We’re now 3-0 in the ACC

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 12:08 pm

I’ve kinda kept my comments to myself about the lack of Pitt being ranked.

Perhaps locally maybe it’s true, but I personally do not believe for a minute there is some national bias against Pitt hoops, or some conspiracy against Pitt hoops.

I’ve seen Pitt lauded and talked about in high regards over the last 13 years many, many times over the last 13 years.

Many people picked Pitt to win it all a few years ago. How many times I’ve heard people talking about Pitt being a national power, and how tough they are.

I respect everyones opinion on this, but, I just haven’t seen it. Seen Pitt get lots and lots of good pub over the years.

Again, I could see more locally than nationally,
and in the local papers, certainly leads to lots of questions on both football and basketball reporting on pitt.

I do agree with that.

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 12:17 pm

Right, but not being ranked can cause problems also, if we get in this week and then lose to SYR we may drop out and it will be a fight to get in all year, then maybe just lose three more games all season and end up with a 7 seed in UTAH or something.

If we get in today, upset Syracuse and keep in the top 25 we’ll continue to move up and end up with like a 3 or 4 or something.

Not to mention it just looks so much better to be ranked

Comment by rhyno527 01.13.14 @ 12:23 pm

All I know is what I saw, someone had fallen in that very spot Durand Durand lost his footing in.

It was funny (strange), I had this ominous feeling in the last 10 minutes of the game someone was going to get hurt. Wake was down by 20 and out of the game. They were making some hard fouls on our guys and imo, were trying to hurt our guys, especially the thug they had a Center. Both Z and Lamar got clobbered late in the game and ended up on the floor. I wanted to see both of them off the court and on the bench.

Refs did a very poor job in keeping this a clean game. imo

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 12:27 pm

Dan, I agree. I think there is not any bias overall about the program, at halftime and during our games all season they’ve spoke glowingly about the program.

The only bias I think there still is about the program is that we don’t get very good recruits and still do well, that may have been the case in the past, but in the last few years we’ve had some big ones, mixed in with a lot of four *s and some 3/4 tweeners

Comment by rhyno527 01.13.14 @ 12:27 pm

@rhyno527, no question. You definitely want to be ranked.

Better for the program all the way around.

Better for perception, better for seeding.

Any your best point, which I’ve seen others make, once you’re in for several weeks, harder to get you out.

Now, our case, first week, in, if we lose we could get bounced right back out.

So, definitely yes, would have been better for Pitt to have been ranked the past month.

I get that.

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 12:29 pm

I don’t know what’s different this year, I gave three or four of my thoughts above as to why we haven’t been in the top 25.

Looking back over the last 12 years though, we’ve pretty much been a fixture in the top 10 and top 20, so I don’t buy the conspiracy or bias thing.

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 12:32 pm

Btw,

we’re up to #4 in ESPN BPI
and #16 in ESPN RPI.

If we get into the AP poll, it’s very begrudgedly, and will more to ‘protect’ Syracuse at #2.
Yes they do this. All the time.

Syracuse won’t drop as far losing to a ranked team, than if they lost to an unranked team.
It’s all about protecting the Orange. Not Pitt.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 12:34 pm

The ranking thing stinks. Pitt had ONE bad season in the 10 and even though they played well last season, they are still paying the price. Syracuse has been playing an easy early schedule for years without leaving the Carrier Dome and they were never hurt by it. What really stinks now is that Pitt they finally enter the top 25 it will be near the bottom. From there it will a lot of wins to gradually move up. Any losses along the way will probably drop Pitt from the rankings.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 12:38 pm

Sickening. DJ has a positive attitude, will help with rehab. Every team has to overcome adversity, this squad has the pieces. You don’t have to replace like for like, you need to replace the points & minutes. Don’t necessarily need a 3 point shooter, but would be nice. DJ has no left hand, was overplayed right and not a threat to drive left. Maybe Newkirk or Jones can create penetration as well as shooting touch. It sucks, Pitt will handle it.

Dan our rankings in ALL these other rating services suggest otherwise.

Espn RPI #16
CBS Sports RPI #21

There is only one conclusion one can reach with the AP writers.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 12:42 pm

Now, I do agree with Emel, as per the local stuff.

Gorman was diced nicely here, and I think rightly so.

My own thought on him, is maybe not so much a bias (PSU grad) (or maybe there is), but after seeing people on here shred his logic, I might sooner buy the argument, that he didn’t think things out properly.

As to, “so and so beat this team”, “they then lost to this team” and so on.

Might be bias, might be laziness.

I believe, if you agree to do the rankings, then you should put some amount of time into it, and not just “copy” last weeks rankings and adjust them here and there.

Which is what I think a lot of them do.

More than the rankings, I’m really concernced with the loss of DJ.

That friggin’ still stings.

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 12:43 pm

exactly Justinian,

Cuse gets a pass every year on playing rent-a-wins at the Carrier Dump. When they do venture from it in the non-con, it’s usually all the way to MSG.

Emel, but don’t you think we’ve been very fairly ranked over the last 12 years??

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 12:45 pm

22 is decent. If we, over the next two weeks, beat GT, Clemson, and the Terps and even play the Orange tough without winning, I can see us hanging around. Especially with the Durand injury

Comment by BATR 01.13.14 @ 12:45 pm

AP votes on PITT (a sampling)

Vitale #21
Seth Davis unranked
John Feinstein #19 (must have been impressed with our Maryland & WF wins)
K. Gorman #18 (same with him, maybe SoS22’s daily text’s made a difference, good job sos22)
Mark Berman #24 ( Cuse grad obviously protecting his team)
Rich Bozich #20 (Louisville writer)
Scott Wolf #21 (Los Angeles writer)
Seth Macon #15 (Macon, GA. writer)
Steve Wiseman #19 (Durham, NC writer)
Terry Toohey #22 (delaware county, PA writer)
Tom Keegan #18 (Lawrence, Kansas writer)

Kind of bittersweet with losing Durand Durand.

Comment by xfmrman 01.13.14 @ 1:02 pm

Dookies right behind us at #23.

Even though they have lost to 2 unranked ACC teams.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 1:05 pm

Losing in the tourny doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be ranked. That’s insane. Pitt’s tourny performance isn’t horrible. They have a few Sweet 16 performances. They do under perform but not embarrassingly. Last year they lost a toss up game in the tourny to the almost national champs. And besides if you are going by reputation Pitt always shows they win in conference play and play up to their nonconference stats regardless of strong the schedule was

Rankings matter in that they will affect seeding. If everyone believes you are elite then you will get an elite seed. Unranked and low ranked teams don’t get good seeds. It’s a perception thing right now. It makes no sense Pitt who has been one of the top programs in the last 10 years is getting treated some mid-major or up and coming program. Look at Ohio State, their best conference wins are against a 10-7 Marquette team, ND or MD. Not much difference from Pitt’s wins of Stanford, Texas Tech and PSU. Everyone rips on Pitt’s schedule and how Pitt has beaten no one. But no one says that about OSU. It is such BS.

The stats say Pitt is a top 10 team this year, if you give UNC, MD, UConn or any other similar school’s Pitt’s exact same resume they are top 10.

Comment by Wardapalooza 01.13.14 @ 1:05 pm

So the question is, what kind of slight does Seth Davis think PITT did to him ?

Is this clown still on CBS pre-game & halftime shows ?

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 1:06 pm

WE have an Elite 8 as well Ward.

Also we lost to eventual Final 4 teams (Wichita St & Butler recently, so it wasn’t like we were losing to schmuck teams.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 1:08 pm

Xfreman, Gorman and I communicate daily via text. For instance he texted me about Duran 4pm yesterday. He is very responsive for a sports writer and I think he genuinely cares what we think. That doesn’t mean he agrees and he is by no means more informed than many of us here. He does however have access that we don’t. I intend to continue to correspond and gave him an atta boy for the 18 and then mentioned he was only a week late.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 1:11 pm

Pitt debuts at 22 in AP

Comment by Pitt it IS 01.13.14 @ 1:12 pm

Actually if we were to lose close to the Orange in Syracuse one could argue it should help our ranking. Of course it would be better just to beat them and jump another 4 slots or so.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 1:16 pm

Everything else is spot on Ward.

There is an obvious bias against PITT. Will say the ACC network announcers were pretty good (thought they did talk way too much about Wake, since they’ve been terrible for a few years now), however one must remember. The PITT/Wake game wasn’t on national TV and probably had a relatively small TV audience.

So while the announcers accolades were nice to hear, it was perhaps because most of the audience tuned in were Pitt ppl. And Wake is the smallest school by far in the ACC, so therefore not many in the ACC heard those accolades being heaped on us.

It was nice to see the shot of all of Pitt’s NCAA banners along the wall. That is not shown very often.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 1:16 pm

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 1:20 pm

Emel, In Gorman’s defense he makes a big deal out of the fact that he had us 15 before we pooped the bed against Cincinnati. I pointed out that that was before he went goofy. He said to blame Lamar not him. We are having civil banter but if we had a question that needed an inside look maybe he could help us. I think is about right at 18 by the way.

I am glad to see us get some of the recognition we have earned but the polls are only significant in that they effect seeding. last week we were projected to a 6 or 7. A 7 has to beat a 2 to get to the sweet 16. In other words one of the projected top 8 teams in the country. We would be hard pressed to win such a game. If we can secure a 3 or even 4 seed that would mean we would only have to beat a projected 20 to 25 team. That to me seems to be within our reasonable capability. To do that we are going to have stay in contention in the conference. we should be able to do that too.

The problem with a coaches poll in any sport is that during the season they are busy coaching their teams and rarely get to watch teams that aren’t on their schedules. So they vote based on what they read in the media and we all know how that goes.

Durand is not dead, just injuried. He can still express his positive can continue tocontribute to this team even without practicing and playing by being a positive influence on the bench.

Time for the next man up to take over.

Nice to be ranked, won’t mean much in the near future if we fail to take care of business against Ga. Tech and Syracuse. The common sauve that takes care all ills remains constantly the same,,,,,just “win baby, win!

We do that over the next two contests and we won’t have to be worried about where we stand in the rankings, that will take care of itself at 17-1.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 2:19 pm

North Carolina has a legendary hoop history. They have a hall of fame coach. They have budget that allows them freedom to compete. They have a willing press and a famous alumni following. How can a school with all of this put such a crappy team on the floor? Our resources at Pitt are very limited when compared to UNC but we are beating them significantly at “their” game. I don’t think this is going to play too well in the south. We are used to some disappointments at Pitt but the Tar heels are immune to such situations and about the time the Dukies lose a couple more we might have to call out the militia to restore calm.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 2:21 pm

Love the Pete, but it was very shortsighted not to replace your campus football stadium with another one, that could be downsized to accommodate basketball game.

The Tarholes had some subpar years under Matt Doherty. One year (2001) they were 8-20.

So they’ve been there before. Granted, not often but they have.

As recently as 2 years ago they were 25-11 but made it to the 3rd round of the Dance.

Now in 2009 they missed the Dance altogether and were a non-Tarhole like, 20-17.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 2:33 pm

Thing about the Cuse stadium, 40K would be way too big for Pitt hoops. Even if you cut capacity down for half for hoops games the place would be so empty except for one or two games a year. And 40K would be too small for football. There are at least 2 or 3 football games per year that easily draw a lot more than that.

The whole state of North Carolina is in morning. Between the playoff football loss and the beloved hoop teams in dishevil it is getting ugly.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 3:18 pm

If somebody comes along and shuts down Lamar we had better be playing perfect D or it could get ugly. It is very hard to stop a player who scores in such a variety of ways. To make it even better he uses his teammates so well that it leaves us less vulnerable. He might be the best player in the conference despite all the attention the big names get.

And the main reason I can see, is they play defense, while some of the others don’t.

Wahoo’s last 3 games:
UVA 76 NC State 45
UVA 74 Wake Forest 51
UVA 62 @Fla. State 50

They might play better defense than us ! Good thing we get them at The Zoo on Feb. 2nd

She suggested they go down since the kids are off. But her husband (the diehard fan of the group) told her, maybe, but does not want their first game experience down there to be a LOSS.

Where have all the Zanna detractors gone? Seriously I don’t think anybody could have expected him to play as well as he has. That Thomas kid from Wake Forest looked more than a little frustrated Saturday. I loved the one time he made a quick spin move to his left and JR picked him clean and started a fast break. He had a look on his face like he wanted to cry. Zanna stands his ground inside fairly well without fouling.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 4:22 pm

By the way, I believe Seth Davis is a Duke alum…which may also explain his smugness.

Comment by Iron Duke 01.13.14 @ 4:24 pm

@ SOS22:

You might have seen my mea cupla that I thought Zanna would disappear in the conference play and he has not.

But just for fun (totally to egg you on): It would be nice to see him play a little defense now and then!!!! He can’t even defend freshmen from Cal Poly! (I think that was the team?)

Comment by DD 01.13.14 @ 4:30 pm

@DD, It is way to easy to get me all worked up. Saying something bad about Talib or Jamie is like insulting my mother. One of these days I will get a life and you won’t have me to play with so enjoy this while it lasts.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 4:36 pm

SOS22, there are not as many Zanna detractors as you think

1) you overreact to statements like ‘the level of his play falls on come conference time’ (which it did the past 2 years) and ‘he may be dominated by a true dominating center’ (after all Zanna is not a true center, has only played BB for 5 or 6 years, and is undersized for the 5)

2) we get kind of tired of you talking about him. (Talking about him now is fine, but you were on a campaign even thoughout the offseason)

One thing one certainly nobody can claim is that he doesn’t play hard. I think I speak for all here that we are glad he is on our side

Comment by wbb 01.13.14 @ 4:39 pm

SOS22:

I too have been down on Zanna.
He did play very strong in the Wake game, other than to short armed lay-ups.
He seems to be playing with a little bit of an attitude lately.

Comment by xfmrman 01.13.14 @ 4:44 pm

Battle between Zanna and Wright for most improved player. If it were still the Big East one of them would win.

Comment by gc 01.13.14 @ 5:07 pm

Z’s post game has improved somewhat. He could hardly play with his back to the basket before, hardly at all. He now does have a little jump hook type of move he uses while going across the lane. Z also seems to be trying to get to the rim for more jams. Opposing team strategy is too foul him, rather than let him get the dunk.

Lamar and others have been setting him up with some real nice passes. Where all he has to do is finish. Our interior passing is getting better as when Wright & Lamar get into the foul line area, they are getting defenders to come to them, allowing a quick pass into Z for a good look.

I would like to see Z take some of slow footed centers outside a little and then take them off the dribble. He did this a couple times against NC State’s 7 footer.

Also he needs to work on his outlet passing after grabbing a defensive rebound, as he still fumbles the ball around quite a bit. It really slows down any transition opportunity.

It’s kind of hard though, to criticize 90% of his play. As he’s really PITT’s ONLY consistent inside threat and top rebounder.

He & Lamar are the 2 keys to the team obviously.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 5:09 pm

I never expected this summer Zanna would be doing quite as well as he has so far. I will take credit for predicting 1) That he would be better at center than the 4 spot 2) He would likely be better suited for the ACC than the Big East. I never expected Patterson to turn into a candidate for Conference MVP and I never figured Cam Wright to improve as much as he has either. I think Dixon deserves a ton of credit. Year after year his players get better and develop which is a sign of great coaching. We also have a banner freshman class and 3 very good looking sophomores. Add the great looking prospects looking to join us we are poised to be a major force in the ACC into the future. ESPN will come around and we will become the media darlings in time. HTP

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 5:09 pm

Got to put Lamar in there too gc. Guy is turning into that possible ‘go to guy’ we rarely have.

As you saw from post above;
“Patterson scored or assisted on 47 percent (26 of 55) of the Panthers’ field goals in the two games. ”

Based on his hesitant play last year, he is 4 times the player he was last year.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 5:17 pm

When I was at Pitt in the mid to late 80’s, along with all of the Oakland establishments, we used to go to a bar on the Southside.

This bar, can’t think of the name, had a very small dance floor in back.

On both sides of the dance floor, there were coat hooks along the walls.

Each coat hook, had a huge paper mache’ animal head on them. Maybe some other designs too??

Anyhow, went you went up to dance, you grabbed one of these things and put it on. So you did your normal dancing (although I wouldn’t call mine normal) (trying), except you’d have this crazy head on.

It was hysterical.

Maybe I’m just having a bad dream and this didn’t happen, but, I seem to remember the place!!!

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 5:17 pm

Levi’s, flannel shirt and a pig or fox head on, cuttin’ the rug!!!

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 5:19 pm

James Robinson quietly goes about being one of the most productive players in college hoops. There are very few more consistent players in the sport. He plays 30 minutes of quality D, hardly ever turns the ball over, gets in the middle of scrums for loose balls, shoots about 80% from the foul line and never has a bad game. I think before he graduates we have a good chance of getting to a final 4.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 5:20 pm

@Emel, there was a big rabbit head too, I remember that. Pig, fox, rabbit, cow.

They were all kinda creepy too. Also, had the sweat in them from the person before you.

Had to be lit up to go out there. lol

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 5:21 pm

lol Dan-o

Use to hang on the Sousside a lot. Can’t say I remember that one. Sounds like a crazy place though.

Sweatin with a pig head on, hopefully it was with a fox. :-)

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 5:24 pm

If Patterson continues to have as sensational a 2nd half of the season as he has the first will he get national recognition and does he have a chance of drawing an NBA paycheck someday?

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 5:25 pm

Over the years I have done some serious drinking on the Southside but never encountered the animal head dance floor. Sorry I missed it as it would fit right in with many of my memories of the bars I visited. I’m too old to keep up with the south side of today but like to go occasionally in the summer just to catch the show. Gorgeous Coeds strutting along Carson Street in outfits that you would never let your daughter wear.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 5:38 pm

I can only hope there we can look back and see a silver lining in DJ going down. Maybe Patterson does even more? Then he would really be in rare company of Pitt greats. If not, the froshes better grow up even faster than they have. Young complaining about not taking enough shots? OK take more…but please make more than you have so far. Need Newkirk to be our new outside threat for sure.

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 5:42 pm

Emel, I didn’t include Patterson because he did it last year, just not as consistently, no doubt he is the “man”

Comment by gc 01.13.14 @ 5:44 pm

DJ was putting up 20 minutes a game. We can get 10 more minutes out of Patterson , Wright and Robinson as long as we avoid foul trouble. The other minutes have to come from the freshman IMO. Artis is playing 15 now and so is Newk. These guys have to step up and that is asking a lot of freshman. The only good thing is we have 8 weeks before the tournament to adjust to the loss.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 5:47 pm

We did play really well (after the first 7 minutes) at NC State. Durand Durand only played 8 minutes, had 0 pts and 1 rebound.

We will certainly miss him, but just recently we won big, on the road, with little contribution from him.

I know I’m stretching here …..it’s something though.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 5:52 pm

I’d love to hear how Uchebo is fairing in practice against Z and Randall.

Kid has a body on him.
Needs new shorts but that’s another matter.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 5:55 pm

Ya guys, I’m sure you did. This was an obscure place, late 80’s, hell, maybe even 90-91 a few years after I graduated.

I don’t know how long it was there.

Have a text into my buddy for the name!! LOL

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 5:58 pm

Wasn’t the place where the midget guy from Chiller Theatre was at a lot ?

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 6:09 pm

Emel , Zanna needs to pull the fellow Nigerian aside and have a wardrobe moment with young Mr Uchebo. The guy is almost 7′ tall and I swear his shorts were hanging about 6″ from his socks. He had is shorts down so far his shirt wouldn’t tuck in. I was afraid we were going to have a Harlem Globetrotter style dropped shorts routine.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 6:26 pm

No it couldn’t have been that place as it wasn’t obscure, it was on the corner of Carson St.
Did have a dance floor though and hat hooks.

Yea sos22, his short length is pretty comical.
Might be why his gait looks gimpy.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 6:38 pm

Was the chilly billy guy at Jack’s??

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 6:41 pm

Jacks,,,with the glass block windows that are lit up. No, but I’ve been. This use to almost be a real Souside bar back in the 80’s.

It got taken over by suburbanites though as the Souside became ‘trendy’.

Turned a friend onto this place and that’s all he ever wanted to go to.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 6:49 pm

That shorts style might be hot in Egunu but it doesn’t quite resonate here in the states. If Uchebo is healthy I think he will make a considerable contribution before he leaves Pitt. He looks like a giant puppy loose on the court. He is the kind Dixon and Slice will make into a draft pick. That much size is marketable. The first game he played he really looked gimpy but was much more fluid against Wake Forest. Cross your fingers.

All this Souside talk is bringing back memories.
One summer at PITT I had a summer job with the City of Pittsburgh. My job was to survey all the streets so that they could be repaved by Allegheny Asphalt. (which none them ever were)

So I walked around with this little stupid thing on 2 wheels…….right into the closet bar.

I must have found some of the least known, most remote bars in the remote area’s of Southside.
Only ppl that lived on that street were the patrons. Cheap to drink wasn’t giving it their due.

That was a pretty good summer !

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 6:58 pm

That wasn’t it, Paul…..but I have been in the Lava Lounge. Interesting little place !

I don’t have any doubt this Franklin guy the perverts hired can recruit. Some people have sales talents and my guess is his are substantial. That is usually about half the battle to put together a successful program. I am not sold that the guy can run a program and coach football. There is a lot more to it than recruiting. All he has to do is have some Wanny type off the field problems or screw up a couple close games and they will be questioning what they spent 4.5 million on. Penn St hasn’t done much against the upper half of the Big 10 and I think Mr Dominate Pa. might be in over his head. Talk is cheap.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 7:18 pm

Sorry Emel, I can’t let it go just yet.

I actually knew that guy a bit. His name was Steve. Last name, Lushinky or Lasinski.

His name on Chilly Billy, was, “Stefan the Castle Prankster”!!!!!!!!

He used to work up at Pittsburgh Driveshaft in Carrick!! LOL

The bars I remember from my time that we used to haunt were Dee’s , The Green Front Inn, Margaritaville, Mario’s for the novelty sometimes and the Birmingham Bridge Tavern.

Ok, I’m done.

So, x and o guys out there…………

what should I be looking for tomorrow night??

Who’s coming off the bench as the 6?? Who’s slidin’ where, whose minutes are going to increase significantly??

Comment by Dan 01.13.14 @ 7:29 pm

Seth Who? I don’t really give a shit what he thinks. If he knew any thing, he would still be coaching.

Hey, the Bozo who Penn State hired, who said he’s going to Kick our ass in recruiting, is bringing his own line coach. So it looks like the end of the road for Larry Johnson He couldn’t find a spot for Penn State’s best recruiter. What an arrogant SOB. Just think, who was holding the Number 19 recruiting class together. Paul Chryst should hire Johnson. That would set off all the Paterno people. I can’t wait to kick their asses in 2016.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 7:31 pm

Newkirk will get minutes at both the 1 and the 2 I’m sure. He’ll have a chance to pickup DJ’s points…I think Jones will get mid-game minutes at the 3 the next few games and if he plays well enough, will continue throughout the season. I’m not sure we’ll see him late in the second half of games though.

Tough pulling for Duke in this game vs. UVA, but a win would help us in the ACC standings.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.13.14 @ 7:44 pm

Listening the Roy Williams show on the radio, they’re talking about everything but….the current state of the Holes.

So they ask Huckleberry Hound, toughest home courts and low and behold, good ole Huckleberry mentions PITT. Said he had never coached there but understands it’s quite a home court advantage.

So there you go !

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 7:50 pm

Dookies rebounding tonite, up 8 at the half.

Sure hope Syracuse doesn’t lose to BC tonite.

They need to wait till Saturday to suffer their first loss.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 7:57 pm

Nobody seems to carve-up the Syracuse 2-3 zone as consistently as Pitt does. It should be an interesting game at Carrier Dome.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 8:08 pm

Pitt Syracuse last year at the Garden was one hell of a game. We couldn’t overcome the hole we dug in the 1st half but we had the Final 4 bound Orange on the ropes. Zanna had a key free throw go in and out that could have made the difference. Syracuse is supposed to be improved at the guard position but they can’t have improved that much more than us. They have struggled against some pretty feeble teams Like St Francis and Colgate not to mention Miami. They haven’t played anyone as aggressive as us defensively and Dixon has generally fared well against their zone. We have a chance to win but we won’t be sneaking up on them because they know what’s coming.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 8:09 pm

There were years when I didn’t think much of a shot to beat them, but the Panthers always come to play against the Orange.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 8:14 pm

The Orange aren’t really very deep and they aren’t the best rebounders either . Other than the wins over Illinois and North Carolina they haven’t really played anyone. Since both of those teams are suspect we really don’t have a good picture of how good Syracuse is. The polls would have people thinking we are at some huge disadvantage but one could make an argument they are ripe to be picked. I could go for a little fresh squeezed.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 8:17 pm

Sorry I missed it. The Orange’s lone impressive win is over Villanova a team we handled twice last year. Villanova has been impressive this season but I don’t think they have improved so much we couldn’t handle them too. Wins over mid level Big 10 teams like Minnesota and Indiana are nice but there is no reason to think we can’t play with Syracuse.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 8:26 pm

but i have no hope that pitt would be that smart
we are so dumb abought thoes kind of things.

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 9:49 pm

wow, I assume Johnson has drank the PSU koolaid for so long not sure how it we be with him coming to Pitt. That would be really good and would be a good aggressive counter move to Franklin.

…. there is that 5 star DE too who is tied more to Johnson than PSU… that could be a huge boost on the side of the ball that needs it.

on the other hand he goes to OSU and now we really are caught in the middle of heavy recruiting on either side of us…

Btw does Larry Johnson have any relatives/friends/anybody in Wisconsin. Know anybody in Platteville ?

UVA was way out of it and came back to win with the points as sos22 predicted. Hopefully he bet.
Cuse only up by 2 at the half.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 9:58 pm

FrankCan, I would love to see Paul Chryst hire Larry Johnson. He would certainly pull his weight in recruiting alone. Besides it would piss off some people in State College. After all Franklin is saying he is going to “OWN THE STATE.” The Pitt staff showed some class when Penn State was hit with the sanctions. When their players were allowed to leave without penalties, Pitt wasn’t recruiting players off their rosters. I remember teams from the Big Ten were up in State College.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 9:59 pm

cas myzlinski… yeah at this point you are right. Pitt needs to do something on the D side of the equation and those two dudes can recruit and are very good football coaches.

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 10:00 pm

If Johnson would come here and talk Thomas Holley into signing due to the fact that AD had such success, that would be great.

But Holley didn’t even have Pitt on his list of schools.

Tennessee’s program crumbled and a lot of talent gravitated to Vandy & Franklin. The AD at UT makes Pitt’s AD look like a Jeopardy champion. UT is back on track, they will commence with beating the crap out of Vandy next year, have a top recruiting class coming in. Franklin is a slimy & smarmy salesman. They deserve each other.

Does Johnson have any affinity or ties to Pitt or Pittsburgh??? Bradley was always willing to come here. Article said Johnson recruits Deleware/Maryland/Virginia …

Unless he within the Wisconsin/Chryst sphere of influence. Makes sense going after Johnson, but it’s the longest longshot.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 10:25 pm

I know that Tom Bradley was an untouchable after the Penn State scandal, but you would think with the passage of time that someone would hire him. I also don’t fully understand why he was un-hirable while Larry Johnson was not. Both guys were regarded and are excellent recruiters.

He said flat out he wants to coach… sure his phone is ringing off the hook right now from B-10 schools at least…

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 10:44 pm

Johnson and Bostad would make everybody here open their wallets in my opinion. My guess is that Pitt would land 3-4 more 4 star recruits and finish around a 30 ranking.

Next year would be top 20 for sure, top 15 with 8 wins! It is time to pay for performance. At the worst, you get these guys for 2-3 years. At best, you keep them for 5-8 years and Pitt puts up the fence around a lot of places, not just PA.

Now go get em Paul Chryst!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 01.13.14 @ 10:46 pm

EMel i know but just once i would like to see pitt use the brains god gave them and say hey great move lets do it just once make him co DC AND LET HIM RECRUIT HIS ASS OFF.
GOD KNOWS WE WILL NEED THE HELP.

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 10:52 pm

Pittscript, Let’s hope at least one of those calls is from a 412 area code!

I personally took offense with “We are going to recruit from every corner of Pennsylavania.” and dominate the State, comments. Then after throwing down the gauntlet, he mentioned Pitt by name, with his “With all due respect to Pitt” statement. It was an unnecessary slap at the Panthers.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 10:54 pm

Would Larry Johnson come to Pitt?..my buddy is a pedo fan and said the he was a must to keep at psu…the man can recruit…we need that??

Comment by Keith 01.13.14 @ 11:00 pm

I hope Pitt isn’t mentally down over Durand and fail to show up at Cuse Saturday. I’m glad they get a game tomorrow to work it out of their system…

I’m betting that by the time Lyin’ Franklin leaves UPS for his next “dream job” he’ll make Urban Meyer & Fraud Graham look likes saints.

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 11:01 pm

One thing about ESPN’s Mike Patrick, should he ever need another job.
Syracuse will always hire him for their PR dept.

What a shill.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 11:09 pm

KEITH EMel we say will pitt talk to coach johnson
would they be smart enough to do that.

Well guess what ohio state is not dumb there fans dont have to beg them to use there brains they have all ready been in touch with coach johnson and have offered him a job.
that is how it goes at a school with a real AD.

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 11:17 pm

GT 7-1 at home this year. Will be tough.

Comment by Frank MD 01.13.14 @ 11:19 pm

Justinian, I’m pretty sure Franklin mentioned Pitt by name because Dejan asked him about it.

That being said, f@#k Franklin! and the horse he rode in on!

Comment by Pitt2Cali 01.13.14 @ 11:31 pm

Pitt is never going to go after Bostad or L.Johnson (PSU) or even Van Der Linden (PSU) (who could recruit his ass off too. Why?..who are they going to fire on the current staff? What white guy useless defensive coaching stiff would Pitt get rid of? I cannot think of a single defensive coach we have that I would not trade for a LJohnson.

However, since they’ve all at least taken a shit somewhere in the state of Wisconsin, they will have have a job for life..no matter how crappy they recruit, or how far off the line of scrimage they have their DBs play.

Great Pa. recruiters are there for the taking, but Pitt will sit on the sidelines and just watch them go by. All one has to do is look at how Slice has helped Dixon to see the picture.

Maybe someday Barry Alverez will allow Chryst to stop genuflecting at Madison and hire someone outside of Wisconsin. We can only hope.

Comment by opitt 01.13.14 @ 11:36 pm

good article on Johnson.. he is saying right things but read between the lines… this guy turned down two big promotions before to stay here… he smells something already…

Paterno loyalists won’t like this either… haha…

Urban Meyer needs a DL coach with Vrabel off to the Texans. Stick a fork in the idea of him coaching at Pitt.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 01.14.14 @ 12:02 am

You are dead on CNorwoodAZ. House is going to get toasted between OSU and PSU. He has no shot. Way to be aggressive Pitt.

Comment by opitt 01.14.14 @ 12:08 am

I don’t know oPitt. Can you get toasted if you’re already getting toasted? We have four 4* recruits. Ohio State only has four recruits that ARE NOT 4* or 5*. Can it really get that much worse?

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 01.14.14 @ 12:29 am

I honestly don’t understand all the hate for our coordinators. At what point is performance the fault of the players? We win a few close games this year and our regular season record is maybe 8-4 or better. Don’t think that our top defensive targets wouldn’t have considered Pitt had the chips fallen differently on the field.

I’d love some bigger names too, but I don’t think our current staff deserves as much hate as they’re receiving.

On a separate note, since when did you guys (even the veteran fans among you) start thinking Pitt is in the same class as Penn St. or Ohio State? These are storied programs, not unlike Duke, UNC, Kansas, and Kentucky in basketball. Pitt has produced good talent (obvious from the number of NFL hall of famers) for sure, but we’ve never been the program that those other schools are. A few good years and one recent (and using that term is a stretch) championship doesn’t make a program. Remember George Mason in hoops? You might, you might not. Remember VCU recently? Probably more likely, but where are they this year? Are they filing out with five star kids? No. They’re not a storied program. Kids go where legacies exist. It’s better for coverage and provides a better opportunity to go pro. Make no mistake gentlemen, 5-star recruits aren’t interested in how diverse and gentrified Pittsburgh is. They want to hit the grid iron, have Espn gameday coverage, and get drafted by the pros. That’s it. Period.

Kids who are interested in the total package, however, will consider Pitt. They’ll be interested in the way Chryst sells the program, and he’s made it clear he’s the hands off type. These are facts, guys. I’m happy with our team. I’m happy with the direction. I’m happy with the staff, and if a few things had been different we’d be having a much different off season conversation.

Comment by MikePITT 01.14.14 @ 1:09 am

Yes Mike, but what % of those kids really make it to the pros? And of those that do what lies beyond? The illusion is the mortar that keeps those legacy programs flying high, and the partnership with the all powerful media is the PED for that illusion. I respect Pitt’s approach, I’m disgusted by evolution or is that devolution of big time college athletics.

Comment by Old School Panther 01.14.14 @ 6:24 am

While this remark may sound a little naive and with all due respect to Durand (sincerely), isn’t he averaging about 10 points per game? Isn’t our average margin of victory around 17 points per game? Ergo, if the players getting his minutes score zero points, on average we still win?

Comment by Classof69 01.14.14 @ 7:20 am

@@@@@@@

So Franklin is a great recruiter. PSU has always done well
in WPa. That said he can only take 25 per year (after sanctions). I like PC”s approach to recruiting. He has expanded into the mid west, Pa, Oh, Fl, and NJ. We focus on local
kids which we value however it is not possible to fill all needs
Every year from WPa. Look for Pitt to win 8 games next year.

Go Pitt beat GT!

Back to Reality ..

Tweet from the Post-Gazette this morning …. Larry Johnson close to being hired by Ohio State. That didn’t take long.

Comment by wbb 01.14.14 @ 7:44 am

MikePitt. don’t you think that having good coordinators can make the difference between 6-6 and 8 and 4.

Comment by wbb 01.14.14 @ 7:58 am

hey guys…. check out the #psu and #weare hash tags… it appears early last night that Franklin tweeted “#weare…better” in response to Johnson leaving… wow. LMAO

What arrogance. many PEDers not happy…

… and this guy was going to unit PSU and show respect to the Paterno cult…. ha…

Comment by Pittscript 01.14.14 @ 8:19 am

@cas myslinski, I would have no problem with that at all brother. Two excellent coaches and recruiters.

Bobby Ingram is one of our best coaches and recruiters.

Comment by Dan 01.14.14 @ 9:52 am

Don’t count me among those thinking that Johnson should be pursued as a Pitt coach. Call me close minded or whatever but I want nothing to do with their scumbag football program or any of their ex coaches. We are Pitt and don’t need their rejects. I don’t care how good a recruiter he is.
