No, Durand, No!!!

This sucks. This really sucks.

Hate this.

Durand Johnson, has made such strides this year. Still prone to launching too many 3s, his all-around game has really improved.

He was Pitt’s first guy off the bench for a reason.

Hell of a time to start experimenting, but that will be what happens for Pitt and Coach Dixon. Going forward, Pitt has a couple options.

Chris Jones will see more playing time and opportunity. I don’t think it will be as simple as sliding him into the spot and minutes Johnson had.

The other thing to expect is Jamel Artis and/or Mike Young may find themselves getting a crash course in showing just how versatile they can be. Playing a bit on the wing and guarding small forwards.

The other way to go is more Josh Newkirk and having Pitt play more of a 3-guard group. Not as much size in the front court that way, but more speed.

Detrick Mostella has to be kicking himself, because this would have been a huge opportunity for him to slide in to the spot.

Pitt Syracuse last year at the Garden was one hell of a game. We couldn’t overcome the hole we dug in the 1st half but we had the Final 4 bound Orange on the ropes. Zanna had a key free throw go in and out that could have made the difference. Syracuse is supposed to be improved at the guard position but they can’t have improved that much more than us. They have struggled against some pretty feeble teams Like St Francis and Colgate not to mention Miami. They haven’t played anyone as aggressive as us defensively and Dixon has generally fared well against their zone. We have a chance to win but we won’t be sneaking up on them because they know what’s coming.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 8:09 pm

There were years when I didn’t think much of a shot to beat them, but the Panthers always come to play against the Orange.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 8:14 pm

The Orange aren’t really very deep and they aren’t the best rebounders either . Other than the wins over Illinois and North Carolina they haven’t really played anyone. Since both of those teams are suspect we really don’t have a good picture of how good Syracuse is. The polls would have people thinking we are at some huge disadvantage but one could make an argument they are ripe to be picked. I could go for a little fresh squeezed.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 8:17 pm

Sorry I missed it. The Orange’s lone impressive win is over Villanova a team we handled twice last year. Villanova has been impressive this season but I don’t think they have improved so much we couldn’t handle them too. Wins over mid level Big 10 teams like Minnesota and Indiana are nice but there is no reason to think we can’t play with Syracuse.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.13.14 @ 8:26 pm

Looks like Dook is using the “burn” against VA.
I expect Pitt to play a lot of Zone when they come to the Pete.

Comment by xfmrman 01.13.14 @ 8:52 pm

The Wahoos making it close….tied with 1:00 left. 11-0 run in 2:00

Comment by KeyboardKev 01.13.14 @ 9:03 pm

Duke and VIrginia tied at 63 with just over a minute left!!!!!

Comment by TVax 01.13.14 @ 9:04 pm

Slow typing.

Comment by TVax 01.13.14 @ 9:05 pm

Duke just barely beat Virginia, so it’s us & Cuse alone at the top…

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 9:13 pm

Wow, did Virgina panic at the end. Are they that tough, or is Duke that weak?

Comment by KeyboardKev 01.13.14 @ 9:20 pm

The bar you guys are trying to think about is Casey’s Draft House. I put a couple of air cleaners in that place and used to service it one a month.

I put air cleaners and almost all the bars and restaurants in the SS….except for Jacks…..they didn’t care at all about smoke there.

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 9:29 pm

INFO FOR YOU i just left a penn state site coach larry johnson just told franklin i dont want to work with not in thoes words but you get the pont he is leaveing penn state but wants to still coach
he was the best receuiter penn state had would pitt be smart enough to give him a job.

no pitt would not be that smart maybe ohio state but if he came here it would help are recruiting

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 9:31 pm

Frankcan, I wonder if the cheapskates at Pitt could work him into the tight budget as a low grade assistant…

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 9:39 pm

I know this bothers alot of folks on this site but imagine replacing any two of our defensive coaches with Larry Johnson and Tom Bradley.

Comment by cas myzlinski 01.13.14 @ 9:46 pm

jackagian he felt disrespected at penn state i think we would have to offer him a co DCto get him but i think the title would mean more then the money
but would the AD have the brains to do it johnson would really help with are recruiting kind of off set franklin
but i have no hope that pitt would be that smart
we are so dumb abought thoes kind of things.

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 9:49 pm

wow, I assume Johnson has drank the PSU koolaid for so long not sure how it we be with him coming to Pitt. That would be really good and would be a good aggressive counter move to Franklin.

…. there is that 5 star DE too who is tied more to Johnson than PSU… that could be a huge boost on the side of the ball that needs it.

on the other hand he goes to OSU and now we really are caught in the middle of heavy recruiting on either side of us…

I agree Frankcan… let’s see an innovative move by Pitt here…

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 9:51 pm

Johsnon probably pissed off he never got serious consideration for the HC either time…

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 9:52 pm

cas myzlinski i am with you and at least go after johnson he would help off set franklin

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 9:53 pm

Article on Johnson…

link to pennlive.com

Notre Dame and OSU now after his D-line recruits.

something is not right with this… starting off not a good foot for Franklin… what did Johnson get a sense of that he did not like??

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 9:57 pm

Come on you guys get serious.
we have the one and the only Matt House.

Why would need anybody else.

Btw does Larry Johnson have any relatives/friends/anybody in Wisconsin. Know anybody in Platteville ?

UVA was way out of it and came back to win with the points as sos22 predicted. Hopefully he bet.
Cuse only up by 2 at the half.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 9:58 pm

FrankCan, I would love to see Paul Chryst hire Larry Johnson. He would certainly pull his weight in recruiting alone. Besides it would piss off some people in State College. After all Franklin is saying he is going to “OWN THE STATE.” The Pitt staff showed some class when Penn State was hit with the sanctions. When their players were allowed to leave without penalties, Pitt wasn’t recruiting players off their rosters. I remember teams from the Big Ten were up in State College.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 9:59 pm

cas myzlinski… yeah at this point you are right. Pitt needs to do something on the D side of the equation and those two dudes can recruit and are very good football coaches.

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 10:00 pm

If Johnson would come here and talk Thomas Holley into signing due to the fact that AD had such success, that would be great.

But Holley didn’t even have Pitt on his list of schools.

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 10:00 pm

Cuse better not lose to lowly BC before we play them…
You’re right Emel….Johnson needs to be from Wisky or be related to Chryst somehow to get a look (sigh)

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 10:02 pm

Smizik is calling out Franklin for poaching Vandy recruits…the comments from the cult are funny…

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 10:05 pm

pittscript yes it would be a real innovattive move bye pitt to hire johnson
but when have you ever heard of pitt being innovative when have every been smart the move would make to much sence i text THE ASST ad abought it but i am sure it will end up in the waste can

how come we can see what a smart move it would be and they cant i dont understand that.

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 10:06 pm

As far as Bradley, he is still radioactive.

Not a good idea.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 10:06 pm

Tennessee’s program crumbled and a lot of talent gravitated to Vandy & Franklin. The AD at UT makes Pitt’s AD look like a Jeopardy champion. UT is back on track, they will commence with beating the crap out of Vandy next year, have a top recruiting class coming in. Franklin is a slimy & smarmy salesman. They deserve each other.

Comment by Old School Panther 01.13.14 @ 10:06 pm

lol … Emel… even a koolaid drinker like me wants to see some capacity to adapt in the off season after taking a hard look at what worked and what did not… PC needs to react.

Does Johnson have any affinity or ties to Pitt or Pittsburgh??? Bradley was always willing to come here. Article said Johnson recruits Deleware/Maryland/Virginia …

Also seeing tweets saying Franklin Slimier than Graham because at least he did not steal recruits his first day on the job… haha… SEC coaches saying Vandy’s recruiting class ‘scorched earth’…

… I say Franklin go’n to rub folks wrong way fast…

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 10:09 pm

your right Franckan … unfortunately… would be nice for a surprise here… who get buzz going big time and bring coaching talent to boot…

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 10:11 pm

Jackagain, Yes but that could change when Larry Johnson goes somewhere else. Players often follow the guys that recruited them. We all saw the recruits Wanny had coming in quickly disapear.
Cignitti took a few with him to Rutgers. Pitt could use a few blue chippers on defense.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 10:11 pm

brothers we need to put a bug in justin ear he writes for different pitt sites may he could get them to do a story on how pitt should go after coach johnson. i think johnson last day at penn state is tues or thur .

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 10:20 pm

BC is clowning Cuse now 45-39….(just shoot me)

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 10:23 pm

spirtof section22 you say you talk to gormen of the trib try to talk him into doeing a story abought bringing coach johnson to pitt

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 10:24 pm

@ Frankie

I don’t think PC wants anybody around that knows anything about coaching/running a program.

Unless he within the Wisconsin/Chryst sphere of influence. Makes sense going after Johnson, but it’s the longest longshot.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 10:25 pm

I know that Tom Bradley was an untouchable after the Penn State scandal, but you would think with the passage of time that someone would hire him. I also don’t fully understand why he was un-hirable while Larry Johnson was not. Both guys were regarded and are excellent recruiters.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 10:26 pm

@ Jackagain

didn’t Syracuse win up at BC in the final game of the year to become ‘bowl eligible’ ?

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 10:27 pm

@ Justinian

the trials at Creepy Valley aren’t all over yet, are they ?

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 10:30 pm

Emel, I saw Princeton beat a defending National Champion, No. 1 seed UCLA in the NCAA men’s Basketball tournament. Sometimes longshots pan out.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 10:32 pm

Emel, yeah, that got them to 6 wins. Cuse is up by 1 now…

Of course a BC win puts Pitt in 1st place in the ACC…

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 10:42 pm

Guys, This might the first ever that, I AGREE with Bob Smizik! With both Penn State and Vanderbilt’s recruiting classes pretty much in place, why would you STEAL Vandy’s recruits. Particularily if you cared for the players and team you were leaving.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 10:43 pm

Franklin’ ‘we will dominate the world’ vibe is going to create friction asap… haha to see him and Uber urban meyers go at it…

anyone know if Johnson has Pitt or pittsburgh ties?

He said flat out he wants to coach… sure his phone is ringing off the hook right now from B-10 schools at least…

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 10:44 pm

Johnson and Bostad would make everybody here open their wallets in my opinion. My guess is that Pitt would land 3-4 more 4 star recruits and finish around a 30 ranking.

Next year would be top 20 for sure, top 15 with 8 wins! It is time to pay for performance. At the worst, you get these guys for 2-3 years. At best, you keep them for 5-8 years and Pitt puts up the fence around a lot of places, not just PA.

Now go get em Paul Chryst!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 01.13.14 @ 10:46 pm

yeah… reading up on this guy… he is from maryland… recruits Maryland/Virginia/Delaware… no reason why he would want to come to Pitt… wonder if maryland or rutgers needs a D coach… haha… this guy is going to be recruiting vs PSU and I bet he lands close by… hopefully not an ACC team.

Comment by Pittscript 01.13.14 @ 10:48 pm

Anybody watching the Cuse game.

These announcer are absolutely creaming themselves over the Orange.
They are smart, they are this, they are that. Everyone is a NBA prospect.

But they’re playing a 5-11 team.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 10:49 pm

EMel i know but just once i would like to see pitt use the brains god gave them and say hey great move lets do it just once make him co DC AND LET HIM RECRUIT HIS ASS OFF.
GOD KNOWS WE WILL NEED THE HELP.

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 10:52 pm

Pittscript, Let’s hope at least one of those calls is from a 412 area code!

I personally took offense with “We are going to recruit from every corner of Pennsylavania.” and dominate the State, comments. Then after throwing down the gauntlet, he mentioned Pitt by name, with his “With all due respect to Pitt” statement. It was an unnecessary slap at the Panthers.

Comment by Justinian 01.13.14 @ 10:54 pm

Would Larry Johnson come to Pitt?..my buddy is a pedo fan and said the he was a must to keep at psu…the man can recruit…we need that??

Comment by Keith 01.13.14 @ 11:00 pm

I hope Pitt isn’t mentally down over Durand and fail to show up at Cuse Saturday. I’m glad they get a game tomorrow to work it out of their system…

I’m betting that by the time Lyin’ Franklin leaves UPS for his next “dream job” he’ll make Urban Meyer & Fraud Graham look likes saints.

Comment by Jackagain 01.13.14 @ 11:01 pm

One thing about ESPN’s Mike Patrick, should he ever need another job.
Syracuse will always hire him for their PR dept.

What a shill.

Comment by Emel 01.13.14 @ 11:09 pm

KEITH EMel we say will pitt talk to coach johnson
would they be smart enough to do that.

Well guess what ohio state is not dumb there fans dont have to beg them to use there brains they have all ready been in touch with coach johnson and have offered him a job.
that is how it goes at a school with a real AD.

Comment by Frankcan 01.13.14 @ 11:17 pm

GT 7-1 at home this year. Will be tough.

Comment by Frank MD 01.13.14 @ 11:19 pm

Justinian, I’m pretty sure Franklin mentioned Pitt by name because Dejan asked him about it.

That being said, f@#k Franklin! and the horse he rode in on!

Comment by Pitt2Cali 01.13.14 @ 11:31 pm

Pitt is never going to go after Bostad or L.Johnson (PSU) or even Van Der Linden (PSU) (who could recruit his ass off too. Why?..who are they going to fire on the current staff? What white guy useless defensive coaching stiff would Pitt get rid of? I cannot think of a single defensive coach we have that I would not trade for a LJohnson.

However, since they’ve all at least taken a shit somewhere in the state of Wisconsin, they will have have a job for life..no matter how crappy they recruit, or how far off the line of scrimage they have their DBs play.

Great Pa. recruiters are there for the taking, but Pitt will sit on the sidelines and just watch them go by. All one has to do is look at how Slice has helped Dixon to see the picture.

Maybe someday Barry Alverez will allow Chryst to stop genuflecting at Madison and hire someone outside of Wisconsin. We can only hope.

Comment by opitt 01.13.14 @ 11:36 pm

good article on Johnson.. he is saying right things but read between the lines… this guy turned down two big promotions before to stay here… he smells something already…

Paterno loyalists won’t like this either… haha…

Urban Meyer needs a DL coach with Vrabel off to the Texans. Stick a fork in the idea of him coaching at Pitt.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 01.14.14 @ 12:02 am

You are dead on CNorwoodAZ. House is going to get toasted between OSU and PSU. He has no shot. Way to be aggressive Pitt.

link to elevenwarriors.com

Comment by opitt 01.14.14 @ 12:08 am

I don’t know oPitt. Can you get toasted if you’re already getting toasted? We have four 4* recruits. Ohio State only has four recruits that ARE NOT 4* or 5*. Can it really get that much worse?

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 01.14.14 @ 12:29 am

I honestly don’t understand all the hate for our coordinators. At what point is performance the fault of the players? We win a few close games this year and our regular season record is maybe 8-4 or better. Don’t think that our top defensive targets wouldn’t have considered Pitt had the chips fallen differently on the field.

I’d love some bigger names too, but I don’t think our current staff deserves as much hate as they’re receiving.

On a separate note, since when did you guys (even the veteran fans among you) start thinking Pitt is in the same class as Penn St. or Ohio State? These are storied programs, not unlike Duke, UNC, Kansas, and Kentucky in basketball. Pitt has produced good talent (obvious from the number of NFL hall of famers) for sure, but we’ve never been the program that those other schools are. A few good years and one recent (and using that term is a stretch) championship doesn’t make a program. Remember George Mason in hoops? You might, you might not. Remember VCU recently? Probably more likely, but where are they this year? Are they filing out with five star kids? No. They’re not a storied program. Kids go where legacies exist. It’s better for coverage and provides a better opportunity to go pro. Make no mistake gentlemen, 5-star recruits aren’t interested in how diverse and gentrified Pittsburgh is. They want to hit the grid iron, have Espn gameday coverage, and get drafted by the pros. That’s it. Period.

Kids who are interested in the total package, however, will consider Pitt. They’ll be interested in the way Chryst sells the program, and he’s made it clear he’s the hands off type. These are facts, guys. I’m happy with our team. I’m happy with the direction. I’m happy with the staff, and if a few things had been different we’d be having a much different off season conversation.

Comment by MikePITT 01.14.14 @ 1:09 am

Yes Mike, but what % of those kids really make it to the pros? And of those that do what lies beyond? The illusion is the mortar that keeps those legacy programs flying high, and the partnership with the all powerful media is the PED for that illusion. I respect Pitt’s approach, I’m disgusted by evolution or is that devolution of big time college athletics.

Comment by Old School Panther 01.14.14 @ 6:24 am

While this remark may sound a little naive and with all due respect to Durand (sincerely), isn’t he averaging about 10 points per game? Isn’t our average margin of victory around 17 points per game? Ergo, if the players getting his minutes score zero points, on average we still win?

Comment by Classof69 01.14.14 @ 7:20 am

@@@@@@@

So Franklin is a great recruiter. PSU has always done well
in WPa. That said he can only take 25 per year (after sanctions). I like PC”s approach to recruiting. He has expanded into the mid west, Pa, Oh, Fl, and NJ. We focus on local
kids which we value however it is not possible to fill all needs
Every year from WPa. Look for Pitt to win 8 games next year.

Go Pitt beat GT!

Back to Reality ..

Tweet from the Post-Gazette this morning …. Larry Johnson close to being hired by Ohio State. That didn’t take long.

Comment by wbb 01.14.14 @ 7:44 am

MikePitt. don’t you think that having good coordinators can make the difference between 6-6 and 8 and 4.

Comment by wbb 01.14.14 @ 7:58 am

hey guys…. check out the #psu and #weare hash tags… it appears early last night that Franklin tweeted “#weare…better” in response to Johnson leaving… wow. LMAO

What arrogance. many PEDers not happy…

… and this guy was going to unit PSU and show respect to the Paterno cult…. ha…

Comment by Pittscript 01.14.14 @ 8:19 am

@cas myslinski, I would have no problem with that at all brother. Two excellent coaches and recruiters.

Bobby Ingram is one of our best coaches and recruiters.

Comment by Dan 01.14.14 @ 9:52 am

Don’t count me among those thinking that Johnson should be pursued as a Pitt coach. Call me close minded or whatever but I want nothing to do with their scumbag football program or any of their ex coaches. We are Pitt and don’t need their rejects. I don’t care how good a recruiter he is.
