The Future is Offense

The build-up on the offensive side of the ball continues apace for Pitt. The latest piece is Adonis Jennings.

The near consensus 4-star recruit from New Jersey (only Scout.com has him at 3-stars) made his decision known in the 3d quarter of the Semper Fi All-Star game.

Depending on your preferred recruiting site, Jennings is the best or second best commit to Pitt’s 2014 class.

The lead recruiter on Jennings was Jim Hueber, the crusty O-line coach. Since the firing of Wannstedt and the scattering of the 2010 recruiting class, Pitt has had only one commit from New Jersey.

Here’s a little more on Jennings (Insider subs).

Jennings shows physical upside with the ability to line up in the slot or as the outside receiver. A potential playmaker whose abilities and skills could develop him into a go-to guy. His feet give the impression that he is faster than he actually is. Verified times are not as fast as he appears on tape but he moves the chains.

Plenty of talent in this 2014 recruiting class on the offensive side, and Jennings only adds to it.

YAHOO!

How did he do it? Put a hat on or did they interview him on sidelines?

Comment by Scott in NEPA 01.05.14 @ 11:23 pm

Interview, and he pulled the Pitt hat out of a bag as he said Pittsburgh. No multiple hats. No real games. Minimal drama.

May I be the first to say….are we recruiting any d as well?

Comment by John 01.05.14 @ 11:23 pm

Did he even play for the East? I watched but never saw him or heard his name called. Good News Regardless.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.05.14 @ 11:25 pm

Boyd and Jennings the next Larry and Antonio! Voytek should have a field day! Just gotta protect him!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 01.05.14 @ 11:28 pm

i am loveing it and if a name has any thing to do with it he will be great Adonis.
it seams we are set at WR and RB and QB and OL
we just have to hope the D comes around.
and i love that penn state lost al golden not that he worried me chryst could handle golden the coach that scared me was franklin hope they dont get him he will out recruit us if they do he would crush us

Comment by Frankcan 01.05.14 @ 11:43 pm

First newspaper article up I’ve seen. Sounds like this kid has his head on straight.

Naturally, he’s coming to PITT !

Comment by Emel 01.05.14 @ 11:57 pm

@ FRankie,

I think Golden would be the tougher recruiter, than Franklin.

I doubt Franklin takes that job, he can wait for something better. Like U of Florida.

Comment by Emel 01.06.14 @ 12:00 am

upitt…u must be joking right.

Perhaps he wasn’t thrown to too much. They knew he was coming to PITT ! You know how that goes, or you should !

Comment by Emel 01.06.14 @ 12:03 am

Gloucester barely counts as Jersey. Might as well be Alabama.

Comment by Chris 01.06.14 @ 12:32 am

Emel, not all all. I never saw him or heard his name. What was his stats?

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.06.14 @ 12:34 am

Good news guys. Continuing to bring good athletes to compliment Boyd, Conner, and Company is what’s needed to the chains moving! This 2014 recruiting class includes some big time linemen, running backs, a couple of quarterbacks and a wide receiver they really wanted. It should be young team on the field next season, Go panthers!

Comment by Justinian 01.06.14 @ 12:42 am

upitt he was playing with a horrible QB on his team and wasn’t targeted all game. he did make one difficult catch and had some good-looking blocks including one that sprung a TD run.

Comment by deepelemblues 01.06.14 @ 1:12 am

Awesome get. Thought when Kamara picked UVA there was a good chance Jennings would commit this weekend.

Still some real concerns about lack of quality recruits, and really just lack of recruits on D period. Some kids may be switching positions in spring to help on that side of the ball.

Not sure how many scholarships are left to give in this years class, but hopefully we can get a couple more surprises and finish this up strong.

I’m guessing most students are still on break, but nonetheless hope The Pete is rocking tomorrow night.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Pap76 01.06.14 @ 1:25 am

4 wide receivers. Maybe a couple of switches to cb or safety. Some may even project to linebackers.

Comment by Jp 01.06.14 @ 1:29 am

Munchak apparently turned down a raise to stay at Tennessee, part of the deal was an overhaul of the coaching staff. Did he turn it down because he was going to have to get rid of assistants or because he knew the Penn St job was his for the taking.

Sure hope it is the latter. I think James Franklin is one of the best young coaches in college football. Winning at Vanderbilt is extremely difficult.

I just see nothing but mediocrity from Munchak. That coupled with the sanctions could mean some tough times for Pedo St.

Really thought Pitt could capitalize on the Nitter’s misfortunes. So far we have not, if they go the Munchak route I think we still can…

Comment by Pap76 01.06.14 @ 2:03 am

Do we still have a shot at safety, Marquese Dudley-Gordon, Cypress Bay HS (Fort Lauderdale, FL ?

He is the brother of Pitt LB, Shane Gordon. Suppossed to have issues with grades/entrance issues.

Comment by The TRUTH 01.06.14 @ 6:01 am

What are all of the negative nellies going to say now that we got a 4**** WR? Oh, that’s right, we haven’t recruited anyone on D. Like someone said, a couple of the ATH recruits and the one QB (mostly an ATH) will more than likely play D. Either way, this is a great get, another 4****.

As far as Marquese Dudley-Gordon – Panther247 has PITT as the favorite. So if PITT gets him, is a 3*** from Florida better than a 4**** from PA??

H2P!!!!!

Comment by VAYinzer 01.06.14 @ 7:00 am

@Emal – great link. I read some of the comments and the fans sound like some of ours, lol. I especially like how one commenter complains that PITT competes with RU over kids of NJ while, RU never pulls anyone out of WPA. Classic.

Comment by VAYinzer 01.06.14 @ 7:04 am

@@@@@@

Here is hoping Jennings is another Tyler Boyd. Image
that next year!

Need final touches on the 2014 class. I believe Pitt
can take full allotment of 25.

Comment by JR 01.06.14 @ 7:18 am

Good get on offense. But we need some gets on D or we’ll have to score 40 points every game to win. To put things in perspective, Pitt has 1/3 the four star recruits of top ten programs. We need more talent if we have hopes of cracking the top ten. But I’d be fine with an ACC championship first. Baby steps.

Comment by TX Panther 01.06.14 @ 7:26 am

Boyd, Weatherspoon, Holtz, Garner, Challingsworth, Jones and who knows who,,, coming out of the backfield. I sure hope that Voytik has been working on reading through his progressions on every pass play in his playbook, because he is going to have a wealth of talent to throw to next season.

Gentlemen,,,,start your engines!

BTW, have you noticed how the number of ” but he’s a horrible recruiter!” comments have now miraculiously evolved to “but who has he recruited for the D?”. I guess some people could even bitch about a sunny day since it’s just too bright out!

Myself, I’m starting to see such a promising future for the Panthers that I gotta wear shades!

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.06.14 @ 7:37 am

Not to mention Adonis Jennings!!!!

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.06.14 @ 7:39 am

Dr. Tom, I do as well. You build a class a few bricks at a time. I think things are moving in the right direction. However I would still see the Panthers re-open the New Jersey pipeline. Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Justinian 01.06.14 @ 7:46 am

Doc, we need play makers and a new coach on D. Who is going to step up for the loss of AD? Will House be better prepared in 2014? Who is a 4 star recruit from this years class on the D?

Don’t gloss over the serious issues that still need addressed on D. Pitt won’t be able to out score every team even with this very good offense shaping up. The D needs help.

And Pitt needs to do a better job recruiting. Chryst needs to find some ace recruiters. Look at what Slice has done. Look at what Jamie has done after he changed his recruiting tactics and got more aggressive and targeted athletes. Chryst would be wise to borrow that approach.

Need to sell the program hard and not just offer. Frosh playing time is a good selling point but also points out your program isn’t elite. Chryst should be pressuring Smug for a larger recruiting budget.

Kudos for landing this 4 star but there is more work to be done before anyone should feel comfortable.

Comment by TX Panther 01.06.14 @ 7:58 am

Dr Tom, fact is PC was known as a non-recruiter when he was hired here .. we knew what we were getting. This is why everyone was happy when he brought Rudolph, a known good recruiter with him. Add Engram who has also been doing well on the recruiting end, probably because he has a lot street cred (Biletnikoff winner and long-time NFL player)

Trouble is that we don’t have anyone on the defensive side of the coaching staff with any cedibility. Aside from Palermo who PC got out of retirement, the collective D1 experience of the defensive staff is about 10 years …. and noe of them have a splash name/rep like Engram.

Our DC is vastly underqualified who is a work-in-progress … why PC thinks he should learn his craft on the job instead of paying his dues as an assistant remains a big mystery to me. LeBeau and Bradley (to name only 2 of several) served many years as an assistant before being elevated to a coordinator position.

Comment by wbb 01.06.14 @ 8:03 am

TRUTH – I remember reading somewhere that the issue with Marquese Dudley-Gordon might be grades. I believe that is the only thing holding him back from committing.

Comment by Winedogs 01.06.14 @ 8:11 am

Great get. The staff is doing a great job.

Some of you folks need to look more closely at the redshirt freshman and sophmores on the roster. It will take some time, but depth is slowly being built. Something this team has not had in many years. Ideally, you want players to redshirt and eventually play as juniors and seniors.
There are many bodies for OL and DL. Remember, all of those players probably played both ways in high school so many can switch positions.

Don’t forget speedster Jester Weah at WR.

Comment by notrocketscience 01.06.14 @ 8:15 am

As far as replacing AD….my choice 6-foot-4, 300 pound Connor Dintino in this class. Played both ways and was named an All-American wrestler.

Oh, but how could he possibly be any good, he only has three stars. LOL

Comment by notrocketscience 01.06.14 @ 8:33 am

Pap76 your crazy to think that PSU did any damage to our recruiting. We pilfered Johnson last year
and only one kid from WPIAL went there. When we went through a coaching change 2 years ago we lost most our 4 star recruits. I bet that happens to PSU in the next 3 weeks. PSU is not a destination for solid coaches it’s a dead end job. Only the ones who got fired and are desperate to save or revitalize their careers are going to take that job. PSU football a sinking ship and still taking on water.

Comment by Tackle made by Hugh 01.06.14 @ 8:34 am

This was the last piece of the recruiting puzzle.
Would love to see a 4 star LB added. That would be icing on the cake. Nice job HCPC.
H2P

Comment by Tackle made by Hugh 01.06.14 @ 8:38 am

We didn’t pilfer Johnson from PSU. He dropped his commitment when the sanctions were announced.

If anything, pSU pilfered him from us. Rudolph, a Belle Vernon alum, had him as a #1 priority yet Johnson went up to PSU for a visit and gave a verbal on the spot.

It was documented in the PG that PSU would have likely gotten Boyd also if it weren’t for the sanctions.

Again, no doubt we got some very good offensive recruits but everytime we get a good recruit doesn’t make up for all of the failures, primarily on the defensive side.

Comment by wbb 01.06.14 @ 8:44 am

Slight change of focus. OK, more than slight.

So, Larry Johnson really seems to be pushing to be named as head coach at PSU. What happens if he is not chosen and the new guy (e.g., Monchak) decides that he really doesn’t want Johnson as an assistant? I am guessing that Monchak would be told that he has to keep LJ—but, what if LJ says screw it and leaves? My guess is that some recruits on the defensive side of the line would start looking for other places to play—like Pitt?

Lots of “ifs” but PSU may be in danger of losing some of its verbals depending on how this plays out.

Meanwhile, we get Jennings. Good stuff. And, I read that he was recruited by Hueber. I don’t get that? Why Hueber? Does he have the ties to New Jersey? Why wouldn’t it be Engram?

H2P

Comment by pmdH2P 01.06.14 @ 8:46 am

Yinzer. To answer your question. Yes a 3 star from Florida beats a 4 star PA kid in my mind. Especially one that plays in South Florida.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.06.14 @ 8:46 am

pmdH2P, in your scenario, I believe the best pickup from PSU would be Larry Johnson himself

Comment by wbb 01.06.14 @ 8:51 am

wbb you just made my point he was at PSU and now he is at PITT. When PSU hit the iceberg people jumped ship and my point is that will continue.

Comment by Tackle made by Hugh 01.06.14 @ 8:56 am

Awesome get. Our class now features the two best offensive lineman in Pennsylvania, an electric four-star running back with vision, speed and power… and a playmaking wide receiver. We also have an under-the-radar 6’4″ athlete in JaQuan Davidson who at least one expert think has a higher upside than Montae Nicholson. He could play WR or safety.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention our four-star quarterback from Florida (Freebeck) and our darkhorse three-time state champ QB. (Bertke) Granted Bertke won his championships in single A ball, but so did Clairton, and I don’t see anyone complaining about those fellas.

The future is bright fellas. Our defense merely needs to be competent with all the firepower we are going to have at our disposal.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 01.06.14 @ 9:03 am

Pitt got Holtz from psu as well

Comment by Nick 01.06.14 @ 9:05 am

Welcome to PITT Adonis! I look forward to seeing you in the blue/gold. Best wishes to you continuing the recent line of talented receivers at PITT! Antonio Bryant, Larry Fitzgerald, Devin Street, Tyler Boyd….

I also like what Coach Chryst is doing. The offense will be fun to watch and the defense, well it will either improve or there will be changes.
HTP! Beat the Terps!

Comment by Jason 01.06.14 @ 9:11 am

Holtz, Johnson, and probably Boyd (all really good players) play for Pitt because PSU screwed up .. and they are local players. Would we have gotten any of them if they were from Philly?

Comment by wbb 01.06.14 @ 9:20 am

I guess a 3 star from Florida is better than a
4 star from New Jersey too???

LMAO!!

However, if we got a 3 star from Florida, and the 4 star from New Jersey didn’t choose us, then….

it would be the coaching staff can’t close any deals!!!

Ok, I see now. LOL

Comment by Dan 01.06.14 @ 9:21 am

There were some good recruiters on Dave Wannstedt’s staff that Graham did not retain. They had a good pipeline in place getting a lot of good ball players from New Jersey. I think Maryland New Jersey and Virginia are states where need to do better, as we need to here locally. Hopefully a little more success will help in that regard. Considering where this program was when Todd Graham bolted for Arizona State, the Panthers are probably doing a little better than we should reasonably expect. I see no reason, not to be optimistic. The 2014 recruiting year isn’t over yet, maybe there are a couple more athletes Pitt can still bring in.

Comment by Justinian 01.06.14 @ 9:24 am

The AJ news just made my snowy, work piled to the ceiling day GREAT!! Awesome win saturday! H2P!

Comment by DC33 01.06.14 @ 9:30 am

I love the building up on offense. Watching the bowl games this year, one common theme out of most of the top 10-15 teams was their ability to score over 35-40 when needed. Explosive players on the offensive side of the ball get you wins. Defense is important but that could be one or two crucial plays or stops. Pitt’s defense has been better than average the last few seasons resulting in 6-7, 7-6 records. Get some speed!

Comment by Pendlum 01.06.14 @ 9:33 am

All this wide reciever talk…dont’ forget about Elijah Zeise! We’ll be loaded.

Comment by KeyboardKev 01.06.14 @ 9:58 am

Dan. Spin it how you want. Florida is the mecca as is Louisiana and Texas for high school talent. Never even brought up NJ, the question was about PA. Auburn wins by 4 tonight.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.06.14 @ 10:01 am

Wide receiver U baby! (Walt Harris) You can’t have too many. Both of Clemson’s are going pro. Florida State will lose a bunch. Must keep up with the Jones. Very excited about the potential offensive might. O-line must grow up fast. Going to be very young. Should have sufficient depth.

Still concerned about defensive recruiting. Need to stockpile some 4 stars every year. Unlikely that any true freshmen will make an impact on D next year. Hopefully some guys on the roster, (redshirt freshmen) will start to show something.
Need to stockpile some pass rushers, these guys take time to develop. This was Wanny’s forte.

Watching the bowl games confirms that you create turnovers to win big games. That starts with pressure on the QB. Our biggest weakness.

But this is a day to celebrate. We got the guy we wanted, let’s hope he lives up to the hype.

Comment by gc 01.06.14 @ 10:13 am

Never fails, someone on this board has to post a negative for every good thing that happens at Pitt.

Do you wake up and think to yourself, my life sucks therefore I must make sure others are as miserable as I?

Comment by notrocketscience 01.06.14 @ 10:21 am

@ Tx Panther, I wasn’t pointing out your post specifically when referring to those guys questioning the “D” recruiting now, since I was typing my post while you were posting your type. HOWEVER,,,,,I still don’t appreciate, supposed Pitt fans that have the habit of discounting our good fortune and constantly negating pleasant Karma by always looking at the glass half empty, especially IMMEDIATELY after the good news occurs.

It’s kinda like being the fortunate recipient of a beautiful lady’s sexual favors only to hear, while she’s gracing you with her presence that if she only dropped acouple more pounds then she would really be a knockout in the nude! LOL!

That does no one any good. We’ll dicuss our defensive recruiting needs tomorrow, relax, lay back and bask in our good fortune today.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.06.14 @ 10:23 am

And BTW, quit looking for Aaron Donald’s replacement, because he is irreplaceable. There are very few players in the entire country with feet big enough to even come close to filling his shoes, and nobody currently on our roster right now for sure. It does give the next guy up something to strive for however, no matter how short they come up.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.06.14 @ 10:29 am

@Dr Tom

Or, even worse, as you are ready to make your move on her, she says that, if she lost a few pounds, she would have been spending the night with some other guy who was her first choice. Luckily, I never let a few minor comments keep me from having the experience that I wanted. 🙂

LOL

Comment by Dan 01.06.14 @ 10:51 am

And that is why you remain an optimistic Pitt fan pmdH2P, resilient in the face of adversity!

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.06.14 @ 10:58 am

@VAYinzer, I’ll take that question just for fun.

I’m rarely negative about Pitt football or hoops, however, I do post in reality, and perhaps sometimes that may get construed as negative.

I will take that question on, as someone, who I don’t consider it negative in any way shape or form, but has posted that recruiting has got to get better, (as a process in the next few years building a program), if we want to be a consistent top 20 program.

I have said many a time, we have got to get more players that have offers from other BCS conference teams, and less players that have (also receieved offers from Toledo, Temple and Maine).

Is that negative??? I find it to be pure truth.

You must get better players, to field a better team. No???

But, I digress.

My answer to your question, would be………..

“What a fantastic get. Exciting to see a big time recruit pick Pitt. This is the type of recruit we need more of. I’m excited to see this guy play, hopefully he can come right in and contribute. Along with the running back from Illinois, this recruiting class is shaping up to be pretty good. Need to win some more games next year, and the recruiting will get even better and better. This is the kind of player that I’m talking about getting, and even more and more of them in our recruiting classes in the future. Looks like HCPC and company just may be building something good.”

I would also kick in………

“with the way the Pitt hoop team has been playing, and with the recent top recruits that Dixon has coming in, I would say that this is the best place I’ve seen Pitt sports (fb & bb) in a long, long, time.”

Comment by Dan 01.06.14 @ 11:09 am

Dan, that post is definitely not negative. I’m in agreement with you, I WANT Pitt to be a consistant top 20 team too, but for now I’m simply hoping for Pitt to become even an “inconsistant” top 20 team next year, that would be enough to make me happy during our second season in the ACC. Small steps in the right direction is still progress.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.06.14 @ 11:48 am

Absolutely good Doctor. I kinda like the way things are heading.

I know it was only a small, small, window to look at, but, I have to say, watching Voytik play against BSU really tickled my fancy and got me excited for the spring.

Comment by Dan 01.06.14 @ 11:51 am

Including Jennings and Zeise, I’m counting 13 WR’s on Pitt’s 2014 roster (including Garner). Garner can return to being more of an H-back (e.g. Dorin Dickerson). Spoon and Ronald Jones are slot types.

So potentially 5-6 guys competing for the Z receiver (assuming Boyd is the X, but could go the other way): Jennings, Wuestner, Challingsworth, and Ford are probably the top 4, and then Zeise and Weah.

And then ultimately one of these guys will be T. Boyd’s back-up, whoever is best suited. Looks to be a position with some depth and competition! Hallelujah!

Comment by Iron Duke 01.06.14 @ 12:11 pm

You can still see a very big view through a small window, if you just stick your head through the window. What I saw in the Pizza Bowl, during that opportunity thrown Chad’s way, was a player who was prepared and had the balls to face adversity head on without wilting under the pressure.

I seem to remember a previous Pitt QB starter that couldn’t bring home a “come from behind” victory in three full years. So Chad has that going for him, already!

It will be very interesting to see how all of the QBs develop over the next couple of years for the Panthers, but it is pretty obvious to me after watching Chad’s performance, that it will be his job to lose in 2014.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.06.14 @ 12:43 pm

@DAN….good post. I get it and agree that PITT needs better players and they need to coach them up. But there are certain factions of PITT fans that always act like there is a rain cloud over PITT FB. Maybe there is but Jennings is a great get. Still, there is no guarantee he works out. Point is, people put too much emphasis on ******s. Like you said, bottom line is that PITT FB needs to win more and then recruiting will work out.

H2P!

Comment by VAYinzer 01.06.14 @ 12:52 pm

And now it’s out there. Upitt totally comes out and confirms that his love of Florida trumps his love of stars.

Shady McCoy, four star from…PA. Wonder who the four+ stars were from FL then and where are they now?

Larry Fitzgerald, four star from…PA (prep). Wonder who the four stars were from FL then and where they are now?

Darelle Revis, three star from….PA. Wonder who the four stars were from FL then and where they are now?

That’s just the Pitt guys who have gone on to be among the best players at their respective positions. What utter crap…

Haven’t looked at their rosters, but U of F not bowl eligible and “The U” blown out in a bowl.

Keep the mantra, four stars+, from Florida, no-MAC offers…

Dr. Tom you forgot Orndorff

Congrats on this get.

Comment by Barvo 01.06.14 @ 1:48 pm

Great to see AJ coming to Pitt and someday being an unstoppable 1-2 punch with Tyler Fitz ‘er Boyd. Great WRs make great QBs and when combined with Pitt’s TE talent the passing game could be a real threat.
I think the talent deficiency is still at LB, DB and DC but hopefully we see positive developments across the board on that side of the ball. I was pleased by an unfamiliar aggressiveness on D in the bowl game, so keeping my fingers crossed.
Hopefully all the young WR and ATH talent shows up in MUCH improved special teams play, which could also use a dedicated coach!!!
Keep the good recruiting karma coming.
