Let the Countdown Begin

It’s New Year’s Eve. Time for the Pitt tradition unlike any other in college athletics. The annual New Years Eve monitoring of media outlets out of fear of learning that a coach has been arrested.

It’s a rich tradition that dates back to 2010.

I know I have been vigilant ever since that fateful evening.

Happy New Years, everyone.

It’s been three years? Where does the time go? It seems like yesterday.

What a dark day.

Comment by Mailman 12.31.13 @ 6:20 pm

Happy New Years Blatherites! Hope your night is filled with many spirits and good times.

Comment by Pendlum 12.31.13 @ 6:28 pm

Whatever happened to our old friend Mr. “Freddie Kruger” Haywood anyway? What’s he doing now? Anyone know?

Comment by BATR 12.31.13 @ 6:50 pm

Well, I overcame my laziness enough to google this to get my own answer:

Well our current coach is so passive, it’s more likely his wife will be arrested,

I just hope that he’s not out dancing in public.

Might get caught dipping by his kids that’s about it! Watching the bowl game again to ring in the new year! Hail to Pitt!!

Nice wbb! Btw, BATR, I hate seeing that picture with “Pitt” behind Haywood.

Comment by panther94 12.31.13 @ 9:03 pm

Duke is clowning TA&M…4 possessions….4 TD’s. 28-10.

Comment by Jackagain 12.31.13 @ 9:07 pm

BATR, thanks for the link. I did not know that WVU had offered Haywood the same deal that Holgersen accepted prior to Haywoods hiring at Pitt. Turning down WVU moves Haywood up a few spots in my book.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.31.13 @ 9:11 pm

Has that story about the offer from WVU ever surfaced before? Can’t believe I’ve never heard it before.

Maybe Ol’ Mike will get a second chance with the hoopies when Holgerson gets the axe next year.

I was drinking downtown and got the news from a golden panther.

Comment by alcofan 12.31.13 @ 9:58 pm

@Jackagain – thanks. And we should definitely go get Holley. He’s the real deal. And he’s from Brooklyn!

Happy New Year one and all!!!

ESPN Reports that PSU loses their football coach to the NFL:
“Penn State’s Bill O’Brien has reached an agreement to become the new coach of the Houston Texans, according to league sources.

The deal is expected to be announced no later than Saturday.”

Comment by dishman 12.31.13 @ 10:27 pm

Franklin will be hired by sat. He is an awesome recruiter.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.31.13 @ 10:52 pm

I hadn’t heard that about Haywood before this, either. I wonder if he didn’t already know something.

Comment by panther94 12.31.13 @ 11:01 pm

Did you guys really think Duke was going to win. Even though AM has zero defense it wasnt going to happen.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.31.13 @ 11:32 pm

Hope we can pull a recruit or 2 from them. Happy New Years guys! H2P!!!

Comment by Shawn 12.31.13 @ 11:33 pm

I don’t think the timeline is correct here. Pretty sure Holgerson was hired at WVU before Heywood was at Pitt.

I believe Al Golden is a PSU alum. He probably has good reason to leave the U. If not, PSU still has the money to hire a really good coach (unlike other colleges.)

Comment by wbb 12.31.13 @ 11:35 pm

Looks like it’s official…

OK PC…get on the phone to some PSU recruits.

Comment by Jackagain 12.31.13 @ 11:43 pm

Who are any recruits that realistically might come into play for Pitt?

Unfortunately I think this is where we see that it really is the program that “recruits” more than most coaches… PSU will hire a good coach and most/all recruits will stick. Just the nature of the beast.

Here’s hoping that Pitt can build a good program in the coming few years that creates a similar attraction.

Definitely a window of opportunity with the changes at PSU and the continuing down trend now at WVU that could well blow up into full disintegration. I sure hope we can take advantage of it.

Comment by Pittscript 12.31.13 @ 11:55 pm

@Pittscript, yeah, but what if Hackenberg gets pissed and decides to bolt?

Comment by Jackagain 12.31.13 @ 11:58 pm

Ped State has to compete with Texas for a coach.
Why do you guys think PSU is invincible? The people in Columbus laugh at them.
Pitt has some very bright days ahead.
Penn State does not.

Comment by Sfpitt 01.01.14 @ 12:24 am

I read in SI that Texas is looking at L’Ville’s coach.

Comment by Jackagain 01.01.14 @ 12:25 am

I certainly don’t think they are ‘invincible’… my comment is making the point that once a school truly develops a ‘successful program’, that there is a momentum and a reality of its own that is the largest reason why they recruit well… not the coach.

Yes there are the exceptional coaches who recruit really well… and these guys have choices and they choose to go to ‘successful programs’… completing the self-fulfilling prophecy of recruiting…

Pitt needs to build is program into a ‘successful program’ and this our best hope with Chryst… that he is a program builder: from the culture, to the processes, mentality, schemes, players.

Once Pitt is a ‘successful program’ it will recruit well because kids will want to be here … and so will proven recruiting coaches.

Until then let’s be realistic and given current folks their due for the tough job they have given the state of affairs the last 3 years (before this year… our first normal year in many).

Even WVU still has some steam from the rich rod days when then built a program and peaked crushing Clemson in a BCS bowl. Amazing too to watch how a program can fall apart too… just takes some time.

UPitt, don’t understand your comment. I thought Duke had a legit chance to beat A&M and they almost did. I know you live in Texas and want to impress us all with how much better everything is there, but… its not so much. Let’s not forget Pitt beat Duke on the road. We know how good Pitt is, so what does that make A&M? Another overrated team from Texas?

Comment by Iron Duke 01.01.14 @ 3:05 am

Iron – we beat Duke and they played their 2nd or 3rd string qb. None of your comments make any sense. My point was did anyone really think little Duke was actually going to win? Johnny Manziel even with an atrocious D was going to win. Your comment about everything better in Texas is just ludicrous. Unless you are talking about football at the high school level and D1 talent.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.01.14 @ 3:19 am

Duke should stay with basketball. I knew that first half score wasn’t going to hold up. Too bad. Would have been good for the ACC.

Pedo State will get someone good. Recruits and players will stay. But the sanctions will be making their impact next year and the year after. Few elite coaches will sign up for that.

Happy 2014.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 8:22 am

ridiculous comments about Duke in this thread. When you lose by 4 points, you have a very real chance to win. Just because they lost at the end doesn’t indicate that they were over their heads.

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 9:20 am

The article from Penn live.com really insinuates that every thing at Happy Valley was not so happy

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.01.14 @ 9:27 am

No doubt it is now Unhappy Valley, but when you have the resources and Ped St has, it is not out of the question for them to attract a Golden, Franklin, or Mullen …. and it doesn’t hurt that B10 I not that good of a league.

Face it, O’Brien’s success has as much to do with the fact that aside from OSU, MSU and Wisc, the rest of the league is mediocre as it has to do with his own skill set

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 10:00 am

Thoughts. Maybe some recruits at PSU rethink. Apke and Holley maybe. MD and Rut will be good PSU fodder next year.

Comment by Frank MD 01.01.14 @ 10:12 am

Wbb. AM won the game and to me it was never in doubt. Duke’s unis and lack of defense are bad. Im just glad we faced their 3rd string qb.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.01.14 @ 10:12 am

Realize I’m alone here, but was never really impressed with O’Brien.

In fact, as much as I hate to say it… Penn State will be better off in the long run if they land the right guy.

Believe O’Brien got lucky with the talent that he inherited and the coaches left over from Paterno.

Freshmen Quarterback Hackenberg was a godsend.

Even so, they still got trounced by Minnesota and lost to Nebraska at HOME.

Although he’s better suited for the NFL, do not see O’Brien succeeding at Houston.

Eventual disappointment at the college level was more of a certainty. But I guess we may never know.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.01.14 @ 10:17 am

I wouldn’t take Apke, not for a minute.
He made his bed.
We don’t need PSUcks’s sloppy seconds.
He will be a marginal receiver at best.
The 4-star defensive tackle, that’s another story.

Comment by gas 01.01.14 @ 10:18 am

Here is the link to the article Dr. Tom refers to:
link to pennlive.com

I think O’Brien did a terrific job at Penn State. As the article points out, he faced a vocal group of Paternoites who have been critical the whole time. If you check out the comments on Blackshoediaries, you may laugh. The vibe is kind of “How could he, this is Penn State.”

Well, Nitters, he just did.

The Texans were expected to be a playoff team and everything fell apart. He will have his work cut out for him.

Comment by TonyinHouston 01.01.14 @ 10:34 am

Pittofdreams, I agree. I contend a big part of O’Brien’s success was the mediocrity of the Big 10. He’s a very good QB coach no doubt but PSU had an extremely friendly schedule — both non-league and league.

Trouble is that if PSU can get a guy like Mullen, Franklin or even Golden, it may benefit the program in the long run.

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 10:34 am

Mullen wont leave Starkville. He is getting awesome recruits and turning them around. I would say SEC to Shit 10 is a step backward. Franklin will take that job by Sat

Comment by Frank MD 01.01.14 @ 11:28 am

O’Brien did an amazing job at Penn State. He had to put up with a lot of bull-crap from the Paterno faction and he apparently had enough of it. Whoever Penn State hires, I doubt that he will be as good as the coach they lost. I am intrigued at what’s going on at Penn State, but first and foremost I’m a Pitt guy. I hope that we continue to support Paul Chryst and give him time to rebuild the program. If Pitt gets a player or two that decide to leave Penn State all the better.

Comment by Justinian 01.01.14 @ 11:35 am

Pedo State deserved the death penalty. They are a disgrace and stain. Who cares who they get. That culture attracts a certain type of recruit that wouldn’t fit at Pitt anyway. I hope we kick their ass come 2016.

It’s fine to be passionate about football and want to win but not at the cost of repeated child rape covered up by Paterno the Pedophile Protector to preserve ones legacy and to protect the Grand Experiment.

F U State Penn. You are getting what you deserve. And I don’t feel bad for their players or recruits. They had a chance to walk away and nobody put a gun to their heads and forced them to pick State. All college coaches lie. Especially at Creepy Valley. Don’t be so stupid.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 12:04 pm

are there any PSU recruits that folks think could realistically come into play for Pitt?

or any kids not yet committed to PSU who were leaning that way that may come into play for Pitt.

Comment by Pittscript 01.01.14 @ 12:15 pm

That was directed at any Nitter that trolls this site.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 12:18 pm

Interesting case study. Is it the program that gets the kids or is it the coaches that recruit the kid. Classic chicken and egg analogy. It is a combination. Once a program is successful, it’s easier to recruit top talent. Sometimes, when a program is down, a dynamic recruiter is needed. If successful in recruiting, the program gets better and then recruiting becomes easier. My answer is that, it depends. That is why the AD is so important in being able to properly analyze the program.

The coach flat out lied to get kids to psu. Dez Howard went off a bit on the culture at PSU and that it is a problem for the next coach. Herbie agreed. Fact, coaches lie, or do they. Paul Chryst doesn’t lie to recruits. That is a difference maker in my opinion. Should Pitt not get Jennings, Apke may be a good target. I would definitely go after the tight end too.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 01.01.14 @ 12:20 pm

For those saying the Duke game was never in doubt…it would be much more believable if you posted that when A&M was getting hammered.

Comment by panther94 01.01.14 @ 12:22 pm

I wonder if the students are rioting in the streets today. They have a tendency to do that when their football coach leaves. Nitters express outrage in the worst way. Welcome to the club of 4 coaches in 4 years.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 12:25 pm

You don’t watch A&M as much as I. Johnny Football is the real deal.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 12:27 pm

Is there something in the water in Texas. I know the educational system sucks and you got a moron for a governor, but it shouldn’t be rubbing off on you guys.

I watched the Duke game, either one could have won, two excellent offenses, no defense. A&M got lucky with a couple late interceptions.

By the way who effen cares?

Why so much vitriol toward PSU, you are acting like them. Again, who cares what happens to them?

I would be very surprised if we get or even go after any of their verbals. Not Chryst’s style.

If you haven’t figured it out yet he is a class act and going to do it his way. No short cuts.

Comment by gc 01.01.14 @ 12:30 pm

Johnny football is a great college qb, but will not be successful in NFL. He is not built for NFL. Say what you want about Russel Wilson, but a lot of his success is derived from a superb defense and the fact that RW prioritizes the ball. Manziel does not. He can get away with his jump balls in college which will be turnovers in the nfl which leads to an early exit.

They have had 4 coaches in two years (paterno, Bradley, billiar Obrien and the new guy). The biggest red flag is the statements made to the reporter about the poor culture that is penn state. That should be used against them.

I do believe Pitt should pursue the tight end and the WR from Mt. Lebo IF Jennings or Kamara go elsewhere. The TE wants to go to a place that features tight ends. Pitt does that well.

Happy new year to all.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 01.01.14 @ 12:33 pm

DHuff, I like your posts. I’m not particularly optimistic about getting any any of their recruits, but who knows. I am more interested Pitt continuing to make progress. The two hiring mistakes made at Pitt, set us back 3 years. I like the freshmen we currently have on the Pitt roster and hopefully we’ll get some more of the same quality. It won’t happen overnight, but I think Chryst is a solid coach and a sincere guy. When I see the lack of honesty and commitment out there in the coaching community, I realize that’s not such a bad thing.

Comment by Justinian 01.01.14 @ 12:34 pm

Comment by Taylor 01.01.14 @ 1:24 pm

A really good wide reciever to compliment Tyler Boyd would be nice, where ever he comes from. Whether someone currently on the roster, or if a blue chipper like Jennings deciedes on Pitt it would open up an already exciting offense. I think Conner is big time running back and a bulldozer to boot. Couple that with the additions of Bookser and Grim on the offensive line and the maturation of Adam Bisnowati and Dorian Johnson, they may have a very potent running game. Things going forward look better than have for a very long time.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.01.14 @ 2:09 pm

The only thing guaranteed is Pitt being mediocre in overall sports and getting its ass beat in the ACC as long as our current AD reigns.

And you can talk trash about Texas all day long. I don’t care. There is good with the bad. But some of you boyz need to visit the state before you comment and some need to watch a high school football game here. I disagree that Johnny won’t cut it. I think he’ll be a Pro Bowl QB in three years.

And Pedo State deserves to be trashed after what went down there and to have their Experiment be exposed as a fraud. They are our rival and any chance to rub it in I will gladly take. Those arrogant pricks will never learn.

I remember when it meant something to play in a bowl on New Years Day. Now it just means you’re from the SEC or B1G.

Comment by Nick 01.01.14 @ 3:15 pm

If I were an NFL GM, I would 100% ignore anything a college football QB does running the ball. I would concentrate on things like pocket mobility, accuracy, and decision making. Based on those three things, I’d say JM has a good shot at future NFL stardom. I intentionally left out “arm strength” because that’s about as important as a QB’s 40 time….nice to have a rocket arm or great speed, but not needed for greatness (See Montana, Joe).

Comment by HbgFrank 01.01.14 @ 3:15 pm

I like Johnny Manzell too. He is exciting to watch and has been good for college football. I guess I got out of the wrong side of the bed, but it seems like there was even extra negativity coming out of you boys from Texas this morning.

The only reason I would root for Duke was to make Pitt look better, other than that I don’t care.

It doesn’t make me feel better if my neighbor’s house burns down, I feel the same way about PSU.
I like to beat them on the field of battle, that’s about it.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 3:37 pm

I’m not seeing that on Scout.com Chick. Where’s your link to that info?

BTW, if we don’t get either Kamara or Jennings, then we have to look deep into our current roster for that primo WR to work opposite of Boyd next season. Obviously, Wheatherspoon stepped up his game this season and will be counted on but I think that he has limited upside potential. Two other guys look very interesting however, both played QB in HS, Ronald Jones and Reggie Green.

We’ve already seen Jones utilized somewhat in Graham’s offense and I’m just not sold on his size, but there is potential there for a breakout year because of his speed. I’m just wondering what he has been doing to keep himself in the mix during his year long suspension?

Reggie Green by contrast is bigger and taller and he might be our RS Freshman sleeper this coming season. Lets keep an eye on him in Spring ball and see if he emerges.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.01.14 @ 3:39 pm

Most Texans these days are either of Mexican descent or transplants from other parts of the US. There is bravado down here but it’s all in good fun. I love to visit the Northeast when I get the chance. Would still pick Pitt over A&M or UT any day. Pittsburgh’s got history, character and charm. Tough to find that in Texas. I actually prefer Cowtown over Big D here in DFW. Visit Fort Worth if you get the chance.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 3:44 pm

Wow, Duke lost their Bowl game on a pick 6, but they ran roughshod over that SEC team from Texas. To the tune of 661 yards of Offense. 234 on the ground and 427 thru the air. They clearly were the better team and the difference in the game was that the Duke qb threw 2 picks.

A&M was very lucky to win the game.

Btw Brandon Connett who was the QB when PITT beat Duke, 58-55 had a better Passer Rating at 153.6 than their starter Boone, at 128.2. That’s substantially better and a lot of ppl at Duke thought he should have been the starter all year.

Duke might have had 800 yards of offense with him at the helm.

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 3:51 pm

@ Doc

You’re forgetting Zach Challingsworth who redshirted this year. Kid was excellent in HS and was All-State first team, PG fabulous 22 and Trib Terrific 25. Kid was also a starting DB and the punter.
And also was a star in basketball.

Obviously a very good athlete.

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 3:57 pm

And Pitt beat Duke and went to a crappy bowl. That doesn’t make me feel any better. That game was entertaining to say the least. What a good QB can do for a program and how he can make a coach look like a genius.

Need to finish strong on recruiting. We have the most two stars since Walts last year. You can only coach up talent so much. I don’t see any two stars on Miami or FSU’s sheet.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 4:02 pm

I spent a weekend in Austin back in 05 (I think) same year Vince Young led Horns to title. Texas played at Ok St that weekend. I was in San Antonio on business during the week, rented a car and it was a short drive north.

Enjoyed Austin very much, definitely best time I ever had in Texas. Hard not to find good music there.

As far as Kamara, all the recent predictions on 247 have him going to UV or Wisc. The later predictions had Henry and Nicholsen correct.

Good news is that some recent predictions seem to indicate that we have a good shot at Jennings

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 4:10 pm

BTW, I agree with Emel, Challingworth is a redshirt that I am definitely expecting to contribute next year

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 4:27 pm

New Years Day bowl games aren’t what they use to be, in the day.

You never had a 4 loss team (Iowa & Wisky) play on New Year’s Day. Or 3 loss teams (LSU)

They were all either undefeated or 1 loss teams (for the most), when it was just the Cotton, Rose, Sugar and Orange on Jan 1rst.

Needless to say, it was a lot better.

Plus PITT played in them more often !

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 4:31 pm

And you had the classic voices of broadcasting that did the games.

Keith Jackson did the Sugar Bowl after Chris Schenkel
Curt Gowdy & Dick Enberg did the Rose Bowl
Linday Nelson did the Cotton Bowl
Jim Simpson & Don Criqui did the Orange Bowl

Those were the days my friends….we’d thought they never end……

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 4:40 pm

@ TEx

I did see one 2 star on Texas’s recruiting list.

Probably why they fired Mack the Knife. He was one guy other than that one year, who didn’t do much with all the 4 stars he got year after year.

Or maybe BYU rushing for over 500 yards had something to do with it. BYU ! lol

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 4:50 pm

A Pennlive source says Larry Johnson was named Penn State’s interim head coach. It’s a good move to try to preserve their recruiting class while they proceed with their coaching search.

I was sort of hoping they would pick someone off of EMel’s list, like Sue or Jay Paterno.

Did I hear Muscrat correctly. Stanford’s O-Line has only been called for 2 holding penalties ALL Year !

lol…no wonder they won the PAC 12.

That’s a joke.

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 6:26 pm

thank god for the lower tier bowel games.

If not for those with Pitt, Cuse & Tarholes winning, the ACC would be 0-6.

UCLA made VT’s defense look pedestrian rolling for 452 yards and 42 points. Arizona rolled BC as well 42-19, in a game that wasn’t even that close.

Guess the PAC 12 South wasn’t too bad after all.

That will be Pitt in 2 years

JJ Johnson on ESPNU at 8. He will score 8 points tonight, going 3 for 10.

Who is JJ Johnson?

2 holding calls on Stanford on 1 play … 1 on OT, 1 on TE

Go Baylor!

O’Brien shored up the fan base and held down the lawsuits at Pedo State! Let turf toe Franco, the Paterno cabal, and all the other unhappy campers start filing the lawsuits against the NCAA immediately! Holgie signs some more jucos. Building a program via the junior college/ transfer misfits (example- Shell) route smells of desperation. Ah the joy of the New Year! Hail to Pitt! UPone

Penn State sucks and WVU swallows, happy new year to all!!

Michigan State has a real defense. Haven’t seen one of those for a while.

Can anyone confirm if PSU players can still transfer with no penalty and play right away… or was that only for that first year?

Folks I talked to tonight weren’t sure…

Comment by Pittscript 01.01.14 @ 9:58 pm

pretty sure that the PSU transfer rule is way in the past

Baylor’s color is green but I can’t find a speck of green on their unis at all (not even on their helmets)

Awesome ad admittance, Chas..

I’m now convinced that I’m harboring “The American Parasite.”

As usual, very, very off-topic here. But nevertheless felt need to wish my friends here at the Blather a Happy New year.

God willing it will be “happy.”

PSU AD is giving Steve P a run for his money for number of football coaching hires in a short period of time. In two years, PSU has been coached by (joe petrino paterno, Bradley, Billiar Obrien, Larry (small) Johnson, a new guy) which makes alot.

I think that will be six coaches in slightly over two years. That third year of fourth grade math did come in handy for me after all. Hope they get on the news as much as Pitt was ridiculed for the turnstile at the head coaching job a few years ago. Our athletic department must do a better job in getting positive messaging to the media. Does anyone know if Pitt has a good relationship with Doug Whaley? He was promoted to the GM of the Buffalo Bills in 2013. I don’t remember seeing any news footage on this. Bad Pitt Athletic Department.

To all the Texans, I sure do enjoy your posts and defenses of your great country. I spent 1 1/2 years in Houston. Enjoyed the city and its diversity, but it is not good for raising anklebiters in my opinion.

Actually, if the Duke quarterback doesn’t throw a pick, which hadn’t been his m.o. all day, Duke goes down and scores, and leaves very little time left, if any.

The game was never in doubt???

A&M got the win, but Duke rolled over them. The win is what you’re after, so, they got it.

Hope you’re not insinuating some type of “SEC rules” or “SEC is superior” type of thing, cause A&M got rocked and were lucky to win.

To Duke that is.

Wouldn’t be a very good “SEC, SEC, SEC” argument game.

@Emel, don’t forget, the ACC has the two big guns still to play, in the top two games.

We’ll see how they do.
