Let the Countdown Begin

It’s New Year’s Eve. Time for the Pitt tradition unlike any other in college athletics. The annual New Years Eve monitoring of media outlets out of fear of learning that a coach has been arrested.

It’s a rich tradition that dates back to 2010.

I know I have been vigilant ever since that fateful evening.

Happy New Years, everyone.

I like Johnny Manzell too. He is exciting to watch and has been good for college football. I guess I got out of the wrong side of the bed, but it seems like there was even extra negativity coming out of you boys from Texas this morning.

The only reason I would root for Duke was to make Pitt look better, other than that I don’t care.

It doesn’t make me feel better if my neighbor’s house burns down, I feel the same way about PSU.
I like to beat them on the field of battle, that’s about it.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year GC!

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.01.14 @ 3:31 pm

Oh, and I like Austin City Limits, would like to visit there or San Antonio. Just don’t care for the braggadocio, “Don’t mess with Texas” LMAO

Comment by gc 01.01.14 @ 3:34 pm

My house might actually go up in value if my neighbors house burned down. 🙂

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 3:37 pm

I’m not seeing that on Scout.com Chick. Where’s your link to that info?

BTW, if we don’t get either Kamara or Jennings, then we have to look deep into our current roster for that primo WR to work opposite of Boyd next season. Obviously, Wheatherspoon stepped up his game this season and will be counted on but I think that he has limited upside potential. Two other guys look very interesting however, both played QB in HS, Ronald Jones and Reggie Green.

We’ve already seen Jones utilized somewhat in Graham’s offense and I’m just not sold on his size, but there is potential there for a breakout year because of his speed. I’m just wondering what he has been doing to keep himself in the mix during his year long suspension?

Reggie Green by contrast is bigger and taller and he might be our RS Freshman sleeper this coming season. Lets keep an eye on him in Spring ball and see if he emerges.

Most Texans these days are either of Mexican descent or transplants from other parts of the US. There is bravado down here but it’s all in good fun. I love to visit the Northeast when I get the chance. Would still pick Pitt over A&M or UT any day. Pittsburgh’s got history, character and charm. Tough to find that in Texas. I actually prefer Cowtown over Big D here in DFW. Visit Fort Worth if you get the chance.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 3:44 pm

Wow, Duke lost their Bowl game on a pick 6, but they ran roughshod over that SEC team from Texas. To the tune of 661 yards of Offense. 234 on the ground and 427 thru the air. They clearly were the better team and the difference in the game was that the Duke qb threw 2 picks.

A&M was very lucky to win the game.

Btw Brandon Connett who was the QB when PITT beat Duke, 58-55 had a better Passer Rating at 153.6 than their starter Boone, at 128.2. That’s substantially better and a lot of ppl at Duke thought he should have been the starter all year.

Duke might have had 800 yards of offense with him at the helm.

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 3:51 pm

@ Doc

You’re forgetting Zach Challingsworth who redshirted this year. Kid was excellent in HS and was All-State first team, PG fabulous 22 and Trib Terrific 25. Kid was also a starting DB and the punter.
And also was a star in basketball.

Obviously a very good athlete.

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 3:57 pm

And Pitt beat Duke and went to a crappy bowl. That doesn’t make me feel any better. That game was entertaining to say the least. What a good QB can do for a program and how he can make a coach look like a genius.

Need to finish strong on recruiting. We have the most two stars since Walts last year. You can only coach up talent so much. I don’t see any two stars on Miami or FSU’s sheet.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 4:02 pm

I spent a weekend in Austin back in 05 (I think) same year Vince Young led Horns to title. Texas played at Ok St that weekend. I was in San Antonio on business during the week, rented a car and it was a short drive north.

Enjoyed Austin very much, definitely best time I ever had in Texas. Hard not to find good music there.

As far as Kamara, all the recent predictions on 247 have him going to UV or Wisc. The later predictions had Henry and Nicholsen correct.

Good news is that some recent predictions seem to indicate that we have a good shot at Jennings

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 4:10 pm

BTW, I agree with Emel, Challingworth is a redshirt that I am definitely expecting to contribute next year

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 4:27 pm

New Years Day bowl games aren’t what they use to be, in the day.

You never had a 4 loss team (Iowa & Wisky) play on New Year’s Day. Or 3 loss teams (LSU)

They were all either undefeated or 1 loss teams (for the most), when it was just the Cotton, Rose, Sugar and Orange on Jan 1rst.

Needless to say, it was a lot better.

Plus PITT played in them more often !

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 4:31 pm

And you had the classic voices of broadcasting that did the games.

Keith Jackson did the Sugar Bowl after Chris Schenkel
Curt Gowdy & Dick Enberg did the Rose Bowl
Linday Nelson did the Cotton Bowl
Jim Simpson & Don Criqui did the Orange Bowl

Those were the days my friends….we’d thought they never end……

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 4:40 pm

@ TEx

I did see one 2 star on Texas’s recruiting list.

Probably why they fired Mack the Knife. He was one guy other than that one year, who didn’t do much with all the 4 stars he got year after year.

Or maybe BYU rushing for over 500 yards had something to do with it. BYU ! lol

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 4:50 pm

A Pennlive source says Larry Johnson was named Penn State’s interim head coach. It’s a good move to try to preserve their recruiting class while they proceed with their coaching search.

I was sort of hoping they would pick someone off of EMel’s list, like Sue or Jay Paterno.

Comment by Justinian 01.01.14 @ 4:52 pm

It will be interesting to see how the much sought after Boise State HC does at U Dub.

Where he’ll be reeling in much better talent.

Didn’t work out too well for the other former Boise HC, Dan Hawkins at Colorado.

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 4:53 pm

Congrats to Doc Emerick for being named Announcer of the Year ….. long overdue IMO

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 5:04 pm

Coaches make or break programs. JoePa made Penn State and then broke it himself. Hopefully Chryst can help rebuild Pitt after the poor hiring decisions of Smug. I’m sure he is happy today since his Huskers won. No conference really dominating in the bowl games. Hope FSU wins big.

Comment by TX Panther 01.01.14 @ 5:39 pm

What a fun hockey game, eh wbb?

Comment by steve1 01.01.14 @ 5:59 pm

My tracking of bowl conference teams (before Rose)
P12 6-2
ACC 3-6
B10 1-4
AAC 1-2
B12 2-1
SEC 5-1

Comment by Frank MD 01.01.14 @ 6:15 pm

Did I hear Muscrat correctly. Stanford’s O-Line has only been called for 2 holding penalties ALL Year !

lol…no wonder they won the PAC 12.

That’s a joke.

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 6:26 pm

thank god for the lower tier bowel games.

If not for those with Pitt, Cuse & Tarholes winning, the ACC would be 0-6.

UCLA made VT’s defense look pedestrian rolling for 452 yards and 42 points. Arizona rolled BC as well 42-19, in a game that wasn’t even that close.

Guess the PAC 12 South wasn’t too bad after all.

Comment by Emel 01.01.14 @ 6:32 pm

That will be Pitt in 2 years

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 6:34 pm

JJ Johnson on ESPNU at 8. He will score 8 points tonight, going 3 for 10.

Comment by steve1 01.01.14 @ 7:00 pm

Who is JJ Johnson?

Comment by Marcus of Schaumburg 01.01.14 @ 7:21 pm

oops, JJ Moore

Comment by steve1 01.01.14 @ 7:27 pm

2 holding calls on Stanford on 1 play … 1 on OT, 1 on TE

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 7:32 pm

Go Baylor!

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.01.14 @ 8:12 pm

O’Brien shored up the fan base and held down the lawsuits at Pedo State! Let turf toe Franco, the Paterno cabal, and all the other unhappy campers start filing the lawsuits against the NCAA immediately! Holgie signs some more jucos. Building a program via the junior college/ transfer misfits (example- Shell) route smells of desperation. Ah the joy of the New Year! Hail to Pitt! UPone

Comment by UPone 01.01.14 @ 8:27 pm

Penn State sucks and WVU swallows, happy new year to all!!

Comment by WLAT and the Big Beat 01.01.14 @ 8:45 pm

Michigan State has a real defense. Haven’t seen one of those for a while.

Comment by gc 01.01.14 @ 9:53 pm

Can anyone confirm if PSU players can still transfer with no penalty and play right away… or was that only for that first year?

Folks I talked to tonight weren’t sure…

Comment by Pittscript 01.01.14 @ 9:58 pm

pretty sure that the PSU transfer rule is way in the past

Baylor’s color is green but I can’t find a speck of green on their unis at all (not even on their helmets)

Comment by wbb 01.01.14 @ 10:12 pm

Awesome ad admittance, Chas..

I’m now convinced that I’m harboring “The American Parasite.”

As usual, very, very off-topic here. But nevertheless felt need to wish my friends here at the Blather a Happy New year.

God willing it will be “happy.”

Wbb – they have 7 unis.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.01.14 @ 10:59 pm

PSU AD is giving Steve P a run for his money for number of football coaching hires in a short period of time. In two years, PSU has been coached by (joe petrino paterno, Bradley, Billiar Obrien, Larry (small) Johnson, a new guy) which makes alot.

I think that will be six coaches in slightly over two years. That third year of fourth grade math did come in handy for me after all. Hope they get on the news as much as Pitt was ridiculed for the turnstile at the head coaching job a few years ago. Our athletic department must do a better job in getting positive messaging to the media. Does anyone know if Pitt has a good relationship with Doug Whaley? He was promoted to the GM of the Buffalo Bills in 2013. I don’t remember seeing any news footage on this. Bad Pitt Athletic Department.

To all the Texans, I sure do enjoy your posts and defenses of your great country. I spent 1 1/2 years in Houston. Enjoyed the city and its diversity, but it is not good for raising anklebiters in my opinion.

hey guys im starting a little twitter account for PITT and other Pittsburgh sports comments/news and things of that nature.

If any of you are on twitter feel free to give a follow @daburghsports27. Will follow back. Look forward to talking PITT sports with you all. Happy New Year

Actually, if the Duke quarterback doesn’t throw a pick, which hadn’t been his m.o. all day, Duke goes down and scores, and leaves very little time left, if any.

The game was never in doubt???

A&M got the win, but Duke rolled over them. The win is what you’re after, so, they got it.

Hope you’re not insinuating some type of “SEC rules” or “SEC is superior” type of thing, cause A&M got rocked and were lucky to win.

To Duke that is.

Wouldn’t be a very good “SEC, SEC, SEC” argument game.

Comment by Dan 01.02.14 @ 10:22 am

@Emel, don’t forget, the ACC has the two big guns still to play, in the top two games.

We’ll see how they do.
