Open Thread: City Game 2013

I kind of miss Ron Everhart. Oh, sure there was a certain level of sleaze on him. But, at least he put together teams who at least challenged Pitt and were not a threat to Pitt’s non-con strength of schedule.

Presently the old Stage Magicians are at 2-2. They lost a game to West Virginia and New Hampshire (from the American East conference and presently 2-3… so, not a good loss).

The game is at 1pm on CBS Sports channel. Hopefully you have it on your tv package.

Should be another relaxing laugher…Go Pitt!

I am back from my Thanksgiving holiday in Charlotte and glad to report that my family in North Carolina are totally oblivious to the fact that someone besides Syracuse and Duke will be attempting to win the ACC. They think that since they handled Louisville that it will come down to them and the Dukies as usual. None of them have seemed to notice that we are beating the snot out of everyone we play and they think of us as just another also ran in “their” conference. They think Syracuse might be a tough game, and assume smooth sailing beyond that. We have a real opportunity to catch these overhyped clowns napping and steal the ACC this year. They are way overconfident and not that good. This could be a great year.

Does anyone have an Internet feed for the game?

The only feed I was able to find is here (but it’s not up yet for some reason)

Wright tearing it up already.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 1:11 pm

That feed isn’t working. Anyone find another?

Aggressor? Whodathunk!

Comment by steve1 11.30.13 @ 1:14 pm

I just saw on the OSU game that Pop Warner at Pitt has the most consecutive game wins at 30. Meyer at OSU has 23 right now. Go Michigan!

Comment by Jackagain 11.30.13 @ 1:17 pm

Found an audio stream here: link to redzonemedia.com

Comment by kanyon40 11.30.13 @ 1:21 pm

The other link I have is here, but it’s the same thing. I guess this guy figured that sitting around and uploading this game wasn’t worth the little money he’d get in hits.

Sloppy. They look a bit lost out there. They are getting beat right now but this will change.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 1:34 pm

Not surprised by a bit of a letdown considering the level of the opponent. But sure hate to see Pitt take their foot off the gas. You don’t want to let a lesser team hang around too long or else they start to believe they can win, and then you can be in trouble.

Comment by kanyon40 11.30.13 @ 1:36 pm

Dukes exloiting Pitt’s one huge weakness…Zanna
He still disappears every close or big game. No natural ablity at all and is getting murdered on the boards.

Comment by Dan 72 11.30.13 @ 1:36 pm

Agreed Panthoor. Duquense clearly wants it more, but that will only take them so far.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.30.13 @ 1:37 pm

Zanna no natural ability? That’s ALL he has. What he doesn’t have is size or refined skills.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.30.13 @ 1:38 pm

The court jesters are not jesting today! They think they can win this game and Pitt is playing into their hands with cold shooting and no inside game at all.

Comment by Dan 72 11.30.13 @ 1:40 pm

Or Natural ability!

Comment by Dan 72 11.30.13 @ 1:41 pm

Keep this around even into the break and we will be fine. Too much talent on this Pitt team to lose The City Game.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 1:44 pm

AgreedPanthoor but Zanna is getting abused by Soto inside. We better get used to it. Really misisng Adams today. Refs continue to miss a ton of travel calls on Soto

Comment by Dan 72 11.30.13 @ 1:47 pm

I know it’s early in the season, but if the game is on the line is there anyone other than Cam Wright who you’d want with the ball? Unafraid to go right to the rim. Kid has worked his ass off.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.30.13 @ 1:50 pm

Dan 72- Also doesn’t help Zanna that he has missed a few FT’s. Duquesne always seems to have an interesting player on their squad every time we play them. But ultimately, maybe not good enough to fit into our squad.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 1:52 pm

So how is that joke of a City Game going? Those kids play our Panthers all summer long. They would love nothing more than to trip us up! Their Coach is finally going to make a difference on the Bluff. Good thing they are missing foul shots! Gotta do it with defense! H2P! UPone

Comment by UPone 11.30.13 @ 1:54 pm

Patterson taking the day off

Comment by steve1 11.30.13 @ 1:58 pm

Glad to see the Panthers took control before the half. Hopefully they are getting chewed out right now and open up a double digit lead early in the second half. I made the mistake of drinking a Rock Star before the game not expecting it to cause great anxiety. Need Pitt to break it open before my heart explodes.

Comment by kanyon40 11.30.13 @ 1:59 pm

Dukes giving us a game! Time to test that mettle.

Comment by tacocat 11.30.13 @ 2:00 pm

I have a feeling that Soko just had his best half of the day. Surely we cant let him keep torching us. I wont have it.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 2:01 pm

Anyone worried that D Johnson picked up 3 fouls in the first half?

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.30.13 @ 2:02 pm

DAn 72 and NorwoodAz, Do you guys ever read your own posts, you would have us thinking Zanna is being abused inside. He leads all scorers and rebounders at the half. Granted it was Pitts worst half of the year so far and we aren’t playing too well but to lay the blame on the Zman seems a little unfair. I am not fortunate enough to be watching so how is he doing so well statistically if he has “disappeared and has no ability” ???

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.30.13 @ 2:05 pm

Dukes turning the tables on us. 14 free throw attempts to our 6. I expect us to be attacking more in the second half.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.30.13 @ 2:10 pm

Spirit-nobody is questioning Zanna’s ability but he hasn’t been sharp on defense-you have to be a 2-way player so to speak in basketball. He is not using his frame and physicality at the moment.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 2:10 pm

SOS. Ironically, I was defending Zanna. Didn’t quite come out that way though. Lol.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.30.13 @ 2:11 pm

Gotta go with Spirit on this one. Zanna is playing out of position and had many more positive plays than negative in the first half.

I know we all love the freshman, Young. But if anyone had a crappy first half it was him. Soko is a lot tougher. First game I attended at Greentree this summer it was Soko v Young. I hadn’t seen Young yet and my first impression wasn’t great. Soko was much bigger, stronger, faster, and more aggressive. But the more I watched of Young, the more I liked him.

Comment by Boubabcar Aw 11.30.13 @ 2:12 pm

Our perimeter shooting has seen better days. We might need to scrap one out here.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 2:17 pm

Zanna, hoop, blocked a shot, rebound, got fouled. Then misses free throw.

Comment by Boubabcar Aw 11.30.13 @ 2:20 pm

Much better from Zanna. That is what he needs to do-have more of a killer instinct.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 2:21 pm

Wright is bailing us out today.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 2:26 pm

13-0 run. Grinding.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.30.13 @ 2:28 pm

Oh Lordie….That looks like fun!

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 2:44 pm

“Oh Lordieā€¦.That looks like fun!”, said a Pitt hoops fan for the first time ever.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.30.13 @ 2:46 pm

No way, dude! I say it all the time…usually alone where nobody can hear me…

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 2:55 pm

TMI Panthoor. TMI. Lol.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.30.13 @ 3:01 pm

I know..sorry about that.

Too much talent in the end. They never gave in.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 3:08 pm

Ouch, that last second bomb by the dukes cost Pitt the cover.

Comment by Boubabcar Aw 11.30.13 @ 3:08 pm

3-pointers kept Duquesne in the game but FT’s killed them in the end.

We distributed the ball well and rebounded when we had to. We disappeared for a moment there-that is something that they need to learn from. Pitt got punched in the mouth and we didn’t like it. That shows fighting spirit to shrug it off and keep driving.

Comment by Panthoor 11.30.13 @ 3:16 pm

Great game Cam! Way to stay patient JR! What a line for Lamar. Mr. Do It ALL! Okay, next up, the evil empire. The chicken s-its who won’t play us unless forced to. Well they have a dangerous team and I want the W bad! Hail to the Panthers! UPone

Comment by UPone 11.30.13 @ 3:25 pm

UPone, I don’t see where there is anything to gain by playing Duquesne or Penn St. and would just as soon not schedule either. The only reason we are playing the peds is because of the ACC Big10 challenge and The Duquesne game ceased being of any interest about 20 years ago. How many times do we have to beat them in a row before we can play someone else? We are at 13 and counting. I don’t like playing at the Consul. Why can’t we replace this game with WVU or UConn who are more legit rivals and actually would provide reasonable competition ?

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.30.13 @ 3:35 pm

When I read about this game in this mornings Trib I felt like the article was written about Duquesne and we were the visitors. It would be nice if the local paper could give us at least equal status with Duquesnes’ sorry basketball program. I suppose I ask too much.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.30.13 @ 3:41 pm

This game went exactly the way I expected. After impressing in NYC, traveling home, followed by the holiday, they were due for a letdown.

Nonetheless, good thing the Dukes were terrible from the stripe or it would gotten a little too interesting

Comment by wbb 11.30.13 @ 4:07 pm

wbb, One of these years we are going to lose one of these games. It makes no sense to me why we put ourselves in a no win situation each year by playing them. The local newspapers are praying for an upset and we lose a home game by agreeing to play at a neutral court. The only one that benefits from the exposure is Duquesne and we don’t owe them anything. At least they ought to have to come to the Pete to get their beating.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.30.13 @ 4:21 pm

it’s the City Game. Yes, it’s a no win situation but I don’t have a problem with it. I, like many here, am not fond of the pre-season schedule but I have no issue playing the 2 locals … give them a needed payday

Comment by wbb 11.30.13 @ 4:43 pm

Wbb, You were right about the let down being predictable. I hope it doesn’t carry over until Tuesday, Because I would enjoy beating Penn St by as many as is humanly possible, or more.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.30.13 @ 4:56 pm

Anyone know how I can see this game? Is there a replay online somewhere?

Comment by panther94 11.30.13 @ 5:09 pm

We play the game because it’s part of our past and is tradition. Let’s not become a Penn State and not schedule someone because you are finding it more difficult to beat them or are actually scared. It’s good for the city. It’s good for both schools. Best of luck to the Dukes. They played well. The game was entertaining. And Pitt won. What more can you ask.

Comment by TX Panther 11.30.13 @ 7:50 pm

And I hope we crush those filthy Nitters. Pedo State SUCKS!

Comment by TX Panther 11.30.13 @ 7:52 pm

If Sgarin’s computer matches the Vegas odds as it usually does Pitt will be favored by 13 or 14 over Penn State on Tuesday. It should be a competitive game.

Comment by pitt1972 11.30.13 @ 9:48 pm

There is nothing wrong with playing Duquesne. Granted, their basketball program hasn’t been good for decades, but so what? As previously stated, it’s a part of the tradition and history of Pittsburgh sports and that counts for something here. If Duquesne wanted out they would ask for the series to end.

The snob Suckeyes pick and choose what Ohio teams they want to play in BB and it’s always in Columbus. They won’t play UC. Cowards.

Comment by Penguins Fan 11.30.13 @ 10:04 pm

First off congrats to the Lady Panther volleyball team for defeating the VT women at Cassel Coliseum tonight 3-1! That’s on the heals of a road win last night at UVA. Road wins never are easy in any sport and these ladies work just as hard as any other Pitt athlete! SOS22 in response to your prior question about the Dukes and our playing them, pretty much what everyone else has said in response to you. Tradition. You certainly have a right to your opinions and I support any Panther fan who is as loyal as you are! Now if I could inquire why would we want to play Cheat Lake CC in any sport? Why even think about interrupting their cross country flights to Big 12 country to match athletic budgets with Texas and Oklahoma (BIG TIME LOL), unless you want to buy a cheap-a$$ masters in business degree! I see those flights as their continued journey to irrelevance! How about that loss to Iowa State today @ home. Maybe then they will stay out of Western PA for recruiting, fund raising, dentures, etc. The way Huggy Beer has wrecked the basketball program that Coach JB left in good standing on his way to Michigan is further evidence they are headed in the wrong direction which is so, so right by me! Hail to Pitt! UPone

Comment by Upone 11.30.13 @ 11:26 pm

P94.

I don’t think CBS does replays like ESPN. Not sure if it will be available anywhere.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.30.13 @ 11:33 pm

That’s what I was afraid of CNorwoodAZ. I like to do my own analysis and had prior commitments for game time (kids).

Comment by panther94 12.01.13 @ 12:24 am

Actually impressed with Duquesne. After the meltdown, it looks like they are back on track.
They made us play yesterday.

JR had another poor day driving to the hoop. Not sure whether he should keep trying of take that out of the repertoire for a while. He just doesn’t seem to be able to finish.

One guy that has learned to finish is Wright, some very pretty stuff. I said last year he was starting to remind me of Wannamaker. Great defender, goes to the hoop, shot improving.

Young looks a little frustrated offensively, needs to know how important his role as a rebounder and defender is and embrace it, the scoring will come next year. Same with Randall, don’t force the shot, throw it back to the guards.

Artis is the nicest surprise on the team, didn’t think he was supposed to be this good.

Love the foul shooting.

Comment by gc 12.01.13 @ 9:37 am

Wish Fios would get CBS Sports on HD, really hard to go back. Quit being so cheap, it’s not like Verizon isn’t profitable.

Comment by gc 12.01.13 @ 9:40 am

Young looks more tentative than frustrated right now to me. Got several easy looks around basket from dishes or offensive boards and hesitated/pump-faked way too much. I think Artis has been the better of the “No.4” guys the past few games, wouldn’t mind seeing more minutes go that way.

The complaints about the schedule are getting tiresome. As a consistently Top 25 program, there’s only so many games that aren’t potentially “no-win.” So, play the locals for fan interest, try to get into a decent tournament, and do your best to at least get some “cupcakes” in that aren’t total RPI crushers. It’s the same for everyone. Look at Duke — they got into the “Champions Classic” because they’re Duke, they played in the exact same tourney as Pitt last year (NIT), and then there’s a lot of Vermont, UNC Asheville, Elon, etc. Trust me, as a season ticket holder I’m not anxiously looking ahead to Savannah St, etc. each season. But it happens everywhere. Hopefully Pitt gets a good run out of its Maui trip next year.

Comment by JW 12.01.13 @ 10:59 am

What’s with all the complaining about playing Duquesne? People criticize Pitt for SOS every year. Pitt plays a neutral site game (technically only a few blocks from Duquesne campus) against an in city opponent that desperately wants to beat them. They had no travel costs. The game was carried on national TV. They get a neutral site win against an opponent from a quality conference. If Duquesne actually does something in conference, which that team clearly has the talent to do if motivated, Pitt has a great RPI win. The arena had more than 11K in attendance even on a big shopping and travel weekend. Looks great for basketball in Pittsburgh.

Lots of whining but no solutions.

Comment by Barvo 12.01.13 @ 11:33 am

I am one who enjoys the Pitt vs Duquense game…when game is close it is best college BB game played in Pittsburgh due to the competing crowds. I want Pitt to win every game but I actually hope the game is close…yesterday’s game was perfect.

But don’t play this game over Thanksgiving weekend when both student bodies are absent. The best part of the game (competing student sections) was missing yesterday which was a shame considering how close the score was for 3/4’s of the game.

Comment by milobloom 12.01.13 @ 11:58 am

Milo, agreed, why take the game away from the students?

Comment by gc 12.01.13 @ 12:00 pm

I’m not too critical about Young, Artis or Newkirk .. all are freshman who will get better and more consistent. All 3 will provide many, many fine moments in the next few years

Comment by wbb 12.01.13 @ 3:08 pm

For those who bet on Pitt and lost: Always take in consideration the CBS hoops theme song being an opponent’s advantage.

Comment by steve1 12.01.13 @ 4:31 pm

Beaver Times has a fun article about Robinson:

Comment by Howard 12.01.13 @ 7:34 pm

This game doesn’t benefit Pitt. We risk losing to a nobody and agree to play them on a neutral court every year, thus giving up a home game. Meanwhile we can’t get any competitive non/con games because we can’t give up a home game. 13 years in a row. Enough of the “memory game.”
