Open Thread: Stanford-Pitt

When the Legends Classic field was announced, this was the presumed finals match-up. Pitt did its part with some ease. Stanford had a little more work against Houston. Never fully shaking the Cougars in the second half — but seemingly never in real danger.

Stanford is easily the best team Pitt will have faced to this point. They play an uptempo offense, but are very vulnerable on defense. They are also not particularly deep. They go maybe 7 deep — depending on foul trouble in the frontcourt.

Despite being an up-tempo team, they can be slowed down. Both Bucknell and Northwestern (teams with comparable tempos to Pitt) forced Stanford to play at their pace.

I expect Pitt to use a fair amount of zone tonight. Stanford likes to use 3 guards and are not shy about trying to attack the basket.

The game is slated for a 9:30 start on ESPNU. It could be later depending on what happens with Texas Tech-Houston in the undercard. And the game might be late getting shown if the DePaul-Texas game on ESPNU ahead of Pitt runs long.

We have real, pure shooters this year. That is what makes me believe this could be the most complete team of the Dixon era. I can’t wait to see how they compete against Stanford tonight!

Comment by Bobby 11.26.13 @ 5:20 pm

Pre season the ESPN announcers split about evenly between us and Stanford picking a tournament winner. We have played better than we were expected to so far, but they are the first team that anyone thought could beat us before the season began. One prognosticator called us offensively challenged. We should have a better indication of how good we are after tonights game. I hope the early impressive play is an accurate indication of how good this group is. During the off season there was a lot of questions with all the turnover and confusion. For awhile it seemed like the sky was falling but if we win good in Brooklyn this evening things would be looking sweet heading into December. HTP

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 5:36 pm

I don’t usually say this about the Pitt’s hoops team this early, but I think they aren’t getting the respect they deserve right now.

They look really good in rebounding, defense, 3 shooting and FT’s…..and that’s with Dixon playing all 10 guys. I see Pitt winning this game by 8.

Good preview here from Zeise:

Tonight will give us our first accurate indication of how good this Pitt team is. I like the up tempo and the shooting so far but it’s eash to make shots when no one is playing defense ala Texas Tech last night. How much is our defense going to suffer with the hot pace Pitt is running?

That Pitt is only a 2 point fave, indicates the gambling public’s sentiment is similiar.

Really looking forward to our first challange of the season. It won’t be our last!

Comment by Dan 72 11.26.13 @ 6:05 pm

The line is still climbing at 6

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 6:19 pm

The gambling public doesn’t know this new team….that they can shoot and make FT’s. They only remember last years team.

Comment by Jackagain 11.26.13 @ 6:20 pm

6pts. is a lot against these guys. They are big and can score. I hope we win by 25 but if I have to risk my cash on this game I want the points.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 6:27 pm

@ Jackagain

You are correct sit, PITT is getting dissed by the pollsters. Boise State is still receiving more votes than us in the ‘others receiving votes’.

A good beatdown of the Tree’s maybe gets us some more votes from out West in next week’s poll.

Only 3 remaining undefeateds in the ACC and PITT is one of them.

PITT is # 7 national in Scoring defense at 54.8 ppg. The Tree’s are # 201 at 72 ppb.

Offensively they are averaging 82.5 ppg and PITT is averaging exactly 80 ppg. Not much difference.

We win in a rout !

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 6:41 pm

We’d be #1 in scoring defense had not all these games been routs by halftime. As PITT has played softer in the 2nd half of these games and used many subs.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 6:44 pm

The Total O/U for tonite’s games is 143.5 or 144.

Time to make some lumber !

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 6:46 pm

Emel, We are getting no respect off of pre season projections and about the softest non/con schedule in Div 1. Stanford is big and they can score the ball, even when well defended. I hope we rout them too but IMHO it is more likely this is a hard fought physical game that takes are best effort to prevail. I think Stanford is underated as much as we are, and will be the type of team that causes us to struggle..

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 6:58 pm

We’re getting dissed more than we ahould sos22.
They like making PITT the poster child of soft non-cons. Apparently according to the RPI is isn’t that soft.

PITT’s RPI of #87 is 3RD HIGHEST in the ACC and far higher than say some ranked teams like Duke(#162) and Louisville(#198).

For example here are some ACC RPI’s:

Syracuse #20
UNC #37
PITT #87
FSU #88
VT #91
BC #101
WF #108
Duke #162
MD #165
Clemson #183
UVA #225
GT #282
Notre Dame #296 (they were ranked)
Miami #302

So the RPI says PITT’s non-con isn’t that soft.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 7:24 pm

I would love to see Talib have a good game. We are very hard to beat when he plays well, and his rebounding should be one of our advantages.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 7:28 pm

In a small sample size for sure, Z is having a Gilbert Brown type year so far. One good game, one bad, one good game, one bad game.

If the pattern follows; he’s due for a good game tonite.

Although we’ve proven we can win big with almost no scoring from the post.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 7:38 pm

@Emel, I don’t care what system anyone dreams up to make it look good, we have played a soft schedule. The Howard team looked so bad I was surprised they had matching uniforms. I swear I have seen better teams playing pick up at the Jewish Y in Oakland. If we take care of business and continue to work we will be in the top 20 later when in makes a difference.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 7:38 pm

Gotta disagree with you, it matters being in the Top 20 ASAP, therefore you can climb further up into the Top 20, then Top 15, Top 10 and when you do have a hiccup and lose you’re not immediately tossed out of the Top 20.

It’s very similar to the Football rankings, no way Ohio Fake should be #3 for they have played no one other than Wisky. But because they were put in the Top 10 pre-season, they are now in a position of only an FSU or Ala. loss of playing in the NC game.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 7:46 pm

Pitt’s program has been good enough for a long enough period of time to be ranked ahead of some of these programs that have accomplished nothing compared to PITT over the last 12 years.

We don’t rebuild, we reload. And we should be garnishing some respect from these a-hole talking heads and pollsters.

Hope we’re using this as the proverbial, ‘chip on the shoulder’.

And btw that system (RPI) is how they determine who does and who doesn’t get into the NCAA’s.
And they have been for quite a while.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 7:52 pm

Talib hasn’t played any “bad games”. He was absent for the opener off the Mrs. P incident. He picked up early fouls and wasn’t eligible to contribute in games 3 and 5. Games 2 and 4 he looked like an All American. I hope you are onto something Emel. Z-Man this is your night.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 7:55 pm

Nothing impressive about this schedule:

Cornell 82-60
Fordham 89-74
Colgate 69-50
St. Francis (NY) 56-50
Minnesota 65-57

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 7:59 pm

EMel:

And Syracuse is ranked #8?

Comment by xfmrman 11.26.13 @ 8:02 pm

Emel I concur about the importance of being ranked and even agree we should get some carry over respect that we always seem to get screwed out of. That being said I also saw the feeble basketball teams that we dragged into the Pete. What kind of system would allow us to benefit from such blatant abuse of corpses. Seriously Emel when I first saw that Howard team I wanted to shoot fouls to see if I could get in the game.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:04 pm

Is there a Jewish Y in Oakland?

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 11.26.13 @ 8:06 pm

OLd Pitt Grad, Across the street from the Cathedral of Learning and Heinz Chapel. Used to get a good pick up game every Saturday morning. Winners kept the court.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:09 pm

Our RPI is only OK because we haven’t lost a game. We are underrated because most of these pollsters are going by last years team and haven’t bothered (I can’t blame them) to watch a Pitt game yet.

We really need to beat Stanford & Cincy.

Comment by Jackagain 11.26.13 @ 8:13 pm

Emel The Orange made the Final 4 and were picked to finish 2nd in the ACC by the coaches. They look overated for sure. Better them than us. We win the first 15 and we will be solidly in the top 10.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:14 pm

#13 Uconn has their hands full with Loyola of Baltimore in the 2nd half 38-35

After struggling to beat BC(2-4) 72-70
BC btw is losing to Sacred Heart in the 2nd half.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:15 pm

we use to play at the Ikes on Negley Ave when I was a kid.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:17 pm

I don’t know about Loyola of Baltimore but I bet I could still make a bucket or 2 on Sacred Heart. What time does the gym open?

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:21 pm

Cuse is always ranked pre-season high. Can’t remember when they weren’t. Might be because they have so many of their alums in sports jounalism(?)and on ESPN. (Bermans & the Albert Crew)

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:22 pm

lol sos22

No it’s not, the girls from Sacred Heart HS in East Liberty/Shadyside. haha

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:24 pm

@Emel, The place we played was a big court on the second floor and they called it the Jewish Y. Is it the same place?

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:24 pm

EMel:
Good point about (sports) J-school.
Cal has them knotted-up in Maui.

Comment by xfmrman 11.26.13 @ 8:25 pm

Well there was one in Oakland and one on the corner of Negley Ave. and Stanton Ave.

The Oakland one was near the Cathedral.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:28 pm

Our preseason rating plummeted when Adams left.

We were one and done last year.

Very few thought we could reload, I am one of them.

Jamie has done a masterful job fitting the pieces back together. Still a lot to prove.

A win tonight will raise some eyebrows.

Let’s go Pitt.

Comment by gc 11.26.13 @ 8:28 pm

We use to play in the basement of the big Presbyterian Church in East Liberty as well.

We didn’t care what religion it was, as long as they an open basketball court. lol :-)

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:31 pm

Texas Tech is beating Houston by 9. Maybe Pitt is a lot better than Stanford.

Comment by Jackagain 11.26.13 @ 8:32 pm

The Cathedral gym is the one I remember some great pick up games. Got in a game there with James Smith who had a cup of coffee with the Celtics. He was 6’11.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:34 pm

Yea tonite is important, if we rout Stanford we will pick up some votes from West Coast pollsters in the polls.

Cause doubling the score on Duquesne and Pedo State won’t help the RPI much or impress voters.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:35 pm

I used to play in a Catholic church in Wilkinsburg. Your right nobody cared what religion you were but it helped keep the cussing down.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:36 pm

Archie is doing an awesome job at Dayton. He beat Gonzaga last night. Give him 1-2 years and he will be the HC at NC State or somewhere in the ACC. He could eventually replace Thad if he is patient.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.26.13 @ 8:38 pm

Jackagain, I hope you are right but I think this Stanford team is big ,strong and can score. This looks like a true test to me and I will be greatly encouraged if we win.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:39 pm

Did anyone play at the soho bath house on Fifth ave? Foul shots would hit the sealing.

Comment by alcofan 11.26.13 @ 8:45 pm

1968
Dedication of East End Y-IKC at Stanton and South Negley Avenues. The facility is sold in 1973.

That’s where we played the most, everyone called it the Ikes. It was brand new in 1968, but the neighborhood started changing so much it didn’t last. they had a beautiful basketball court.

“Between 1972 and 1973, the Young Men and Women’s Hebrew Association – Irene Kaufmann Centers (Y-IKC) decided to sell three of its properties to help pay for the new Emma Kaufmann Camp. The North Negley building was sold to Craig House Technoma. The second property consisted of 550 acres of undeveloped land in Normalville, Pa., which had been intended as a new site for the Emma Kaufmann Camp. The third property, located in Harmony, Pa., which had served as the EKC was sold for development as a private camp.”

My family moved to North Park in 1974 so I was out of the loop on them closing.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:47 pm

That must be where Adams learned.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:48 pm

lol alcofan….sounds like you had to be a real artist…to make a foul shot. :-)

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:50 pm

Clyde Vaughn must have learned his line drive shot at the Soho Bath House.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 8:52 pm

@Emel, He was the only guy I ever saw with his range with a flat shot. He was before the arc wasn’t he? Most of his points were from 3.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.26.13 @ 8:55 pm

yep Clyde sure was….he would have averaged probably 10 more ppg if the 3 would have been in use.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 9:06 pm

The line has shrunk to 5.5.

Comment by xfmrman 11.26.13 @ 9:06 pm

He could rebound like a beast too, for being only 6’4″ and lots of times was our leading rebounder.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 9:09 pm

or: -6 PITT

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 9:10 pm

C’mon, face facts, Pitt’s getting dissed because Jamie Dixon chokes in the NCAAs. College basketball is the NCAA Tournament. Conference season counts next. This preseason stuff is good entertainment & helps fuel interest via the polls.

If this team is as good as some of you think, Dixon needs to already be planning to change his approach to the NCAAs.

No need to go down the road of how close Pitt’s been. That’s a lame excuse for Dixon.

Comment by TonyinHouston 11.26.13 @ 9:11 pm

But at +6, money must be moving to Stanford.

Comment by xfmrman 11.26.13 @ 9:11 pm

FWIW, Tex Tech beat Houston by 12

Comment by wbb 11.26.13 @ 9:13 pm

I wonder if they will cut away from the Texas/DePaul game for the Pitt game.

I’m sure they would for Duke, UK, KU or UNC.

Comment by xfmrman 11.26.13 @ 9:16 pm

All ACC teams winning tonight against no-names. If Pitt would schedule Michigan State, UCLA, Kansas, even on the road, it would help Dixon’s program. Stanford-Pitt is a good game, but it’s not generating any buzz.

Comment by TonyinHouston 11.26.13 @ 9:25 pm

No way they would cut away. It would start on ESPN3 or possibly ESPNews.

Comment by Nick 11.26.13 @ 9:26 pm

Not many Cappers on this game tonite.

Only found 2 well known ones.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 9:26 pm

We are so much better off than UH. Their program has been below mediocre for years, save for an NCAA tournament appearance under Penders. We are so much better off.

Fully supportive of Dixon. Anyway, Pederson is too damn dumb to find anyone better.

Comment by TonyinHouston 11.26.13 @ 9:28 pm

They’re both on PITT btw.

Comment by Jackagain 11.26.13 @ 9:49 pm

I believe Stanford stepped out on that possession

Comment by Benzene 11.26.13 @ 9:50 pm

It’s starting to piss me off that everyone thinks they can successfully press Pitt. Not much in the way of offensive rebounds this game for us.

Comment by Jackagain 11.26.13 @ 9:52 pm

6 baskets, 6 assists!

Comment by xfmrman 11.26.13 @ 9:57 pm

I appreciate pitt’s ability to shoot and make 3′s, but it seems at times that is the only shot they can make. Would like to see some of these closer shots falling. Matter of time, as the shots are there, but need some penetration in this zone.

Comment by Pendlum 11.26.13 @ 9:57 pm

We have 2 offensive boards 7 total rebounds. They have 5 rebounds but none of them on the offensive glass.

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.26.13 @ 9:57 pm

We are really missing that ‘big’ at the post

Comment by Benzene 11.26.13 @ 10:01 pm

Good thing the 3′s are dropping….I think we need to run some and take advantage of their bigs.

Comment by Jackagain 11.26.13 @ 10:02 pm

8 baskets. 8 assists. 10 guys with minutes already.

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.26.13 @ 10:03 pm

Fortunately, so are about 97% of all the other teams out there, Benz.

So far Pitts shooting game vs Stanfords paint game.

Comment by alcofan 11.26.13 @ 10:04 pm

Comment by MariettaMike 11.26.13 @ 10:24 pm

This really looks like an ACC team if you think about it…

Although I would say the new rules have a lot to do with it, but we also don’t have that bruiser… You know, the Blair, McGee, Young…

Either way, nice to see us beat up on people, lets keep it going

Comment by Benzene 11.26.13 @ 10:24 pm

Tell you what, Pitt had a well rounded 1st half. Every 1st half this year Pitt has scored 40-45 points. Thought they were shooting a lot of 3′s and they have looked inside too. Thought Stanford’s bigs would be a problem, but the Defense has held them in check. Can’t wait to play some better competition, but could be a great season!

Comment by Pendlum 11.26.13 @ 10:26 pm

I can’t wait to destroy duke at the pete on jan 27th!!….ok..ok…i’ll calm down…I just hate them!!

Comment by Keith 11.26.13 @ 10:28 pm

Seems like the coaches pulled the plug early on Mike Young. Or was he just really quiet out there?

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.26.13 @ 10:34 pm

Hearing jay Williams say Duke is horrible at perimeter defense and seeing how Pitt is shooting could make one believe.

Comment by Pendlum 11.26.13 @ 10:34 pm

I AM IMPRESSED!

Huge but subtle changes in this Pitt team. First, I see a total comittment to shooting form on this team that I have never seen on any Pitt team. Some shooting coach (maybe Slice) has really worked with these guys. Balance, elbow in, follow thru….and that’s from both the foul line and 3 point line.

Second, dribble drive penetration like I have never seen on any Pitt team.

Third, they found a place to not just hide Zanna but to take hie robotic moves and make them work for the team.

This is my first look at Pitt and they don’t seem to be giving away much on defense…

Very very impressive. Stanford is NO Patsy!

Comment by Dan 72 11.26.13 @ 10:34 pm

12 baskets, 10 assists. lots of open shots.
Lots of paint touches.
Lots of forced TOs.

A 4 point play could help swing the tide

Comment by Pendlum 11.26.13 @ 11:14 pm

This is good though…pitt hasn’t had to play 40 min this year…..so I like that it’s a little tight

Comment by Keith 11.26.13 @ 11:15 pm

I’m not 12 or anything but seeing “I love Johnson” written definitely makes me chuckle.

Comment by Pendlum 11.26.13 @ 11:15 pm

4th on Brown.

Comment by Keith 11.26.13 @ 11:20 pm

Pitt is really small.
Patterson 4 and Young 5.

Comment by xfmrman 11.26.13 @ 11:20 pm

Powell travelled

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.26.13 @ 11:21 pm

Powell doing his best Sam Young impression. Has he actually taken that outside shot?

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.26.13 @ 11:21 pm

Nasty.

Comment by Panthoor 11.26.13 @ 11:21 pm

Pitt had gotten a lot more calls in the first half. Evening up now.

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.26.13 @ 11:22 pm

I have enjoyed watching this game more than any in recent memory. Smart basketball and fundamentally sound.

Not sloppy with the ball and taking what the defense gives.

Comment by Jason 11.26.13 @ 11:23 pm

I like these guys.

Comment by Panthoor 11.26.13 @ 11:25 pm

That 4 point play by Johnson was the dagger…I was starting to sweat.

Comment by Jackagain 11.26.13 @ 11:25 pm

If Stanford’s bigs could make a shot, Zanna would be in trouble. I liked Pitt moving to double the bigs though

Comment by Pendlum 11.26.13 @ 11:25 pm

I agree Dad, Powell took 3 steps…..NBA continuation too.

Comment by Jackagain 11.26.13 @ 11:26 pm

We are beating our toughest challenge by 19…

Comment by Panthoor 11.26.13 @ 11:30 pm

totally dominant so far this year….love it!!

Comment by Keith 11.26.13 @ 11:30 pm

Really Lamar?

Comment by Panthoor 11.26.13 @ 11:32 pm

I really like this team. A complete game – offensively and defensively. And shutting the door on Stamford when they started to mount a come back. Nicely done gentlemen.

H2P!!!

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.26.13 @ 11:35 pm

Not to mention 5 guys in double figures.

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.26.13 @ 11:35 pm

Champs! H2P!

Comment by Mailman 11.26.13 @ 11:37 pm

I think that one ref thinks he’s calling a Nets game. There’s no continuation in college.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.26.13 @ 11:37 pm

What’s impressive is that we outscored them in both halfs 15 and 6.

Comment by Frank MD 11.26.13 @ 11:38 pm

The rankings on Sunday should be interesting…I doubt if Stanford thinks there’s 25 teams better then Pitt.

Comment by Jackagain 11.26.13 @ 11:38 pm

Hopefully we get to see some good shots of our boys holding a trophy. I just hope it doesn’t get to their heads too much. The ACC crown is a much better piece of silverware.

Comment by Panthoor 11.26.13 @ 11:39 pm

15:5 assist to turnover ratio. Very nice!

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.26.13 @ 11:43 pm

We have beaten teams by an average of 23.2 a game, per my math and ESPN. Lehigh got the closest, losing by 19.

Comment by Panthoor 11.26.13 @ 11:45 pm

First of all, I’d like to congratulate our Panthers on a great win. Second, but just as important, I’d like to say I’m sorry to my fellow Blatherites and Panthers for popping off the other night about the negativity directed towards our football team. This goes especially to you, UPitt. You deserve your opinion and I probably shouldn’t comment after I reach the legal limit. HTP!

Cameron Wright.

Comment by Brendan 11.26.13 @ 11:47 pm

I think that’s 3 games in a row for Lamar over 20 points. Could we finally have that one ‘Go to’ guy. And it’s not forcing any shots, think the dorky espn announcers said he only took 10 shots.

My feed sometime slowed the video down and it was amazing to see how high Patterson and Durand Durand get off the floor to launch their shots.

JD’s mission is to keep the team fresh & focused, as I sometimes think, they start tuning him out later in the season.

He should let Slice or Brandin(seperately) scream at them for a few minutes each during the game as well and save his screaming for when we really need it in a game.

Comment by EMel 11.26.13 @ 11:57 pm

4 newcomers to this team are doing great jobs.

Newkirk looked solid tonite. no mistakes, solid.

Randall, although it will not show up in the box score, was solid on D. Again no mistakes.

Young and Artis are a great freshmen duo at the 4 spot. This was a real question for me at the start of the year. Their offense and rebounding are there. Once they get more comfortable on D, watch out.

Comment by xfmrman 11.27.13 @ 12:07 am

The Tree might be the biggest overall team we play this year. They had (for guys that played), two 6’10″ kids, one 6’11″ kid, and two 6’9″ kids.

Yet we still outrebounded them 33 to 26.
Rebounding is about positioning and boxing out, not height. We all should know that after watching two legendary smaller guys who were the best rebounders in the Nation. Jerome Lane at only 6’6″ and DeJuan Blair who is listed as 6’8″ but he’s more like 6’7″ at the most.

Great game, we hardly broke a sweat.

H2P !
VeV !

Nice to see we have a basketball team. The guys are the real deal! We should make the top 25 this month.

I hope we get some fair treatment from the ACC refs further down the road. Should be easier to see with the new rules (that is, if they are applied equally).

Now we only need a good football coach. Another couple of years, and we will get a chance to start over again. Hope I live that long.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 11.27.13 @ 12:17 am

I had planned on going into the city for the game, this evening, with my two sons (both Syracuse grads). One of my sons had a thing and couldn’t make it so we cancelled. The min price for a ticket was about $55.00 for behind the basket seats. The min for the sides were $77.00 per.

Probably one reason so few people show up for the Legacy.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 11.27.13 @ 1:03 am

Congrats to the Legends Champs! Way to go Lamar Mr. MVP and Cam sure did deserve to be on the All-Tourney team! Cudos to Suzie and the Lady Panthers on their 78-43 win @ the Pete over Mt. Saint Marys! Like the way this week long Thanksgiving Buffet is developing. And we ain’t close to being done! Do you deep fry Raven or skewer the thing? H2P! UPone

I hope they come back to Barclays next year. Me and my buddy got a whole suite to ourselves for $100! Got blasted without having to join the peasants in the main concourse to buy beer.

Comment by Chris 11.27.13 @ 1:13 am

Chris, you done did good!

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 11.27.13 @ 2:05 am

When did Pitt become automatic from the foul line? I must have missed that memo.

This team looks deep and is a scoring machine. Plus even with the new “no touch” foul calling, defensively they are still tenacious.

I’m really interested in seeing the Panthers dive into the meat of their ACC schedule. If they keep playing like this, they can take on all comers!

Is it time for the pollsters to slip them into the top 25 yet? I think so.

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.27.13 @ 7:36 am

Best foul shooting percentage and a great result. This team looks confident and I like their style. Pitt will be very competitive in the ACC this year.

H2P!

Comment by MariettaMike 11.27.13 @ 7:47 am

Major improvements over last year:

Foul shooting, what a difference

Cam Wright, pretty close to a complete player

Lamar Patterson’s weight loss and conditioning has taken him to the next level

Zanna’s intermediate shot looks better, playing a little quicker

Johnson and Artis give us shooting depth, Johnson more consistent and a more complete player

Robinson’s weight loss and conditioning plus experience has him playing at a faster pace

Overall Team defense is much better

Deficiencies so far:

Zanna not big and strong enough to defend the true big man

Randall is just adequate as back-up to Zanna, little offense, fouls a lot

Robinson not able to finish his drives with authority, but does get fouled often and is money from the line.

So far improvements far surpass deficiencies.

Stanford had some players, Powell and Brown, but not nearly enough.

Still passing the tests but won’t know how good until we play in close games. Really fun so far.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by gc 11.27.13 @ 8:05 am

Good assesment.

From my obervation, biggest worry is defending against a talented low post player.

Comment by wbb 11.27.13 @ 8:21 am

@wbb–I agree. But, if you can prevent that post player from getting touches by making passing inside difficult, that will reduce the potential damage.

Comment by pitt1972 11.27.13 @ 10:18 am

No doubt, the team lacks a good big man, however not sure Adams would have been ready had he stayed. Plus the team looked disjointed on offense with him last year. Everybody felt compelled in getting him the ball in the middle.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 11.27.13 @ 11:21 am

Interesting thought Old Pitt, is the team better off without Adams? In theory no, because he fills a huge void in the middle, adds rebounds, put backs, and blocked shots.

But the chemistry seems to be as good as it gets without him.
