Basketball Verbal: Damon Wilson

Jamie Dixon (thanks to superb recruiting from Brandin Knight) recevied a 2015 verbal from 6’4″ SG Damon Wilson. Wilson is a 4* player on Rivals, a 3* player on Scout and will likely be a top 75-100 player in the 2015 class when it’s all said and done. His AAU squad is the NJ Playaz, whose alumni include future Pitt star Mike Young and a nice NBA lineage.

Wilson held offers from a laundry list of schools like Florida, Florida State, Miami, Virginia, and Tennessee. Here’s what Wilson’s coach, Erik Jaklitsch, had to say about him.

“Damon wanted to play in the best conference in the country in the ACC for one of the best coaches in the country,” Our Savior coach Eric Jaklitsch said. “He will get to play with James Robinson, who will be a senior when he is a freshman, and also learn from former point guard and Big East Player of the Year, Brandin Knight. He also has a friend on the team in current Pitt freshman Mike Young.”

As for Wilson’s skillset, Jaklitsch said: “Damon is a pass-first type of guard. He could grow to almost 6-6 by the time he graduates in June of 2015 and enrolls at Pitt. Damon has a high basketball IQ, a pass-first mentality and a strong will to win. He can also get to the basket and score when he needs to . What is one of his biggest assets is that he is a lefty and is more difficult to defend.”

A pass-first guard at 6’6″? Sounds good to me. He is Pitt’s first 2015 verbal and if he can perform at the same level Mike Young has so far, needless to say there will be a lot of happy fans in the Pete. Here are his highlights.

lloks promising and continues the trend of recruiting player types we are not used to seeing here

This is good news I guess. Hopefully he pans out.

It’s about time B. Knight recruited someone. If he ever has hopes of becoming a HC he needs to step up the recruiting.

H2P !

Wow, Good news foe a change. Step two, get a top 100 big guy.

His teammate at Our Saviors will be a top 20 big. Does that fit your criteria gc? Unfortunately, he may want to go to Kentucky.

Did Barry Rohrrsen introduce B Knight to all his NY connections yet? Need to keep the succession plan in order.

dhuff, sounds good to me, Kentucky has enough.

Just from the video, seems like a sort of lefty version of James Robinson. Not so athletic, but good body control and nice court vision.

Don’t know if anyone one saw the headline but Toad and his son were flying to Texas on a recruiting trip when the plane dropped from 35,000 to 10,000 causing an emergency landing.

So this new Texas AD has been at ASU for a total of 18 months … which still exceeds Fraud’s stay here by 7 months

Comment by wbb 11.05.13 @ 3:28 pm

Tony, if memory serves, the AD that lured Fraud to ASU was a womean who was demoted to assistant AD … not sure if it was to make room for this guy who just left, or because of the bad PR for hiring Graham

I really like this guys length, height, reach. Seems fluid and athletic. I bet he will be an excellent defender and rebounder. Nice pick up for our future.

Thank you BK! Welcome aboard Damon Wilson! All the pieces are falling into place for JD. Now if we can round up a shot blocking presence in the post for the 2015 class! H2P! UPone

Watching the college hoops kick off show on ESPNU. Bilas is complaint about how the 35 second shot clock is “a joke” and the game is too slow. While he is ranting, they are showing Pitt throwing the ball around the perimeter for 30 seconds against Syracuse at the Pete last year. Can’t make this stuff up.

So Pitt finally got. 6’4″ 180 guard named Wilson, albeit a year too late. Still think Devin Wilson, from Montour would have been a nice fit at Pitt. At least we’ll get to see him every year at Va Tech. Hope he doesn’t make Jamie regret not recruiting him harder, sooner.

Sorry, damn iPad, should have said “Bilas is complaining…”

Looks like Slice is showing Knight how its done on the recruiting trail! Great news! And great to see some four stars next to his name. Agree with the folks above, need a presence in the middle! Like a Blair type! Athletic big guy who can do a little of everything! Hail to Pitt! I can’t wait til Friday! We all need a good hoops year!

I would imagine that the coaches kept a close eye on Devin Wilson throughout his career. Why wouldn’t they? So he must not have been all that great of a fit either talent or game wise. By the way, the actual Boubacar Aw coaches the girls team at my local HS…….Wilmington (NC) Hoggard

So how long before Toad decides UT is his dream job?

Comment by HbgFrank 11.05.13 @ 8:03 pm

@ Boubacar

Send a big Thank You note to the ESPN a-holes. Out of the 300 teams that play D1 basketball, they chose to show us…as their example..

Should do wonders for recruiting.

Fook them

Bilas is a self-server … he knows Duke has a better chance with a faster-paced game

Comment by wbb 11.06.13 @ 7:37 am

Quite a list of interested schools that recruited this kid. Have to like the fact that he’s a lefty, since I’m one myself. I always found that it made it harder to guard me, even though I couldn’t dribble worth a $hit. Wilson’s skill set is light years beyond mine of course. Welcome to the Panthers!

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.06.13 @ 9:11 am

We have had some nice luck with NYC guards. After we beat Duke And North Carolina a few times Bilas will really be screaming for some rule changes.
