Open Thread: Pitt-Navy

Now the wife has bronchitis. Got to love this time of the year.

It’s Pitt-Navy. Pitt hasn’t lost to Navy since that miserable 2OT home loss in 2007. Lord, I forgot how that loss really pissed off everyone.

I’m trying not to worry too much about the defense facing a competent triple-option with Matt House calling the defense. Really. As much criticism I have for the hire. As annoyed as the defense has made me at points. It is only fair to say that the Matt House and the defense haven’t cost the team a game (it’s been close at points, but they are still wins).

The offense has also struggled in the last three games. One dimensional in the previous two games and effectively no-dimensions in the Virginia game. Aside from guard Cory King out, the rest of the offense is healthy, so we will see if that helps.

It’s 1 pm on CBS Sports Network. Hope you have it.

I’m thinking the dynamics of the Big 10 are a lot different than those of the ACC.

For instance, they need several teams to fill bowl slots on New Year’s Day. The ACC doesn’t even play on New Year’s Day.

Meaning what worked at Wisconsin might not equate to what would work at PITT !

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 8:24 pm

Usually the optimist, but this is bad. I’m fresh out of excuses for this team. The prevailing one is that we need to give Chryst time because of the recruiting hit we took. That shouldn’t make a difference against Navy. We have better players…got out coached and out hustled. I’m going to try to drink this one away.

Comment by panther94 10.26.13 @ 8:24 pm

44 is terrible as well. Push at the QB on a run. What a puss. A MLB pushing at a QB instead of blowing him up. QB ran another 10 yards after it.

Comment by Upittbaseball 10.26.13 @ 8:30 pm

What…. they need like 3 teams to fill the Outback Bowl, the Capital One Bowl and now the Gator Bowl on New YEAR’S Day.

And those are beyond the 2 bowl bids they always get in the matter of a BCS Bowl and the Rose Bowl.

So Wisky was needed because Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue are not counted on to have good teams. Leaving only so many to fill all these bowl bids they have.

They have to have 5 good teams per year to fill the BCS slot, the Rose Bowl, the Capital One, the Outback and the Gator.

If you look at Wisconsin rise it started around 1990 when all these new bowls on Jan 1rst started.

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 8:32 pm

Those are the dynamics I’m talking about !

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 8:35 pm

Not to mention all the 2nd tier and 3rd tier bowls they have in the Big 10.

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 8:39 pm

Our W at Duke was against the backup QB. If the starter wasn’t hurt we get the L there.

Comment by Upittbaseball 10.26.13 @ 8:39 pm

Never knew before that PC’s brother was the MAC conference commissioner. And you about Geep out in SF.

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 8:42 pm

no doubt Upitt

this team had to be one of the worst 4-2 teams in the country.

I also said Va TEch wasn’t good, and Duke proved that today.

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 8:45 pm

We faced 1 good offense all year. It was FSU.

Comment by Upittbaseball 10.26.13 @ 8:50 pm

The coaching staff needs to realize voytek needs to play hes back next year savage isn’t

Comment by zach 10.26.13 @ 8:51 pm

slight consolation

Almost Halftime

Ohio State 42 Pedo State 7

And the Hoopies got smacked again. 12-35 against K-State.

Sad we only get solace in other’s losses.

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 8:52 pm

I’m starting to believe PC is a hack. Comes from a connected family.

No matter what you thought of Graham, he was a self made man.

Had no connections at all, family wise.

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 8:55 pm

Well now. Drove down from Philly to have my two boys see thier first Pitt football game.

And that is what they got. Pitt Football.

Same crap I used to watch from Pitt stadium as a student 25 years ago.

5 year of consistent underachievement. But hey you gotta give it to them…they never run out of intetesting ways to let you down.

And yet still, I hope…how?

Comment by DD 10.26.13 @ 8:55 pm

Here’s how good ODU is:

ODU 27
Norfolk State 24

Their QB threw for 325 yds and 3 TD’s today. so what

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 9:02 pm

Scoring is the name of the game these days.

Point totals are going up, up, up every year.

Offense is the name of the game. And it’s not pro-set offenses.

So far 61 teams today have scored more than 21 points today.

And most of them weren’t playing a service academy, save for Notre Dame. And they score 42 points against AirForce.

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 9:09 pm

@ DD

To save your kids a lifetime of heartache and disappointment, I’d start taking them to some other school’s games. Somewhere where the school actually makes a firm commitment to it’s football program. Not some half-assed phony attempt and then try to pass it off as legitimate.

It’s as phony as the dressed up Heinz Field with PITT paper over the sidelines. And as easily ripped off.

Pains me to say it, but that’s the truth !

Comment by EMel 10.26.13 @ 9:18 pm

Where do we go from here good question. Pitt may finish 6 and 6. Nordy will continue socializing with ACC presidents and cementing his UPMC legacy. Corn Hole will continue to remain mainly unseen. Pitt basketball will struggle with the transition to the ACC much like Pitt’s other programs have done.

For alumni and fans, we bend over once again and say thank you Pitt may I have another. Well, I’m not going to take it anymore. What do we fans have to lose. Pitt has already taken our money, our hopes, our time, our senses, and our dignity. I want new leaders that can give those things back. And make me want to give back more.

I’ve been beaten down like y ‘all but I still love my alma mater and have hope for her. That’s why I’m a big advocate of improving the college experience and making it fun again for students, fans and alumni. I’m a big fan of recognizing the economic importance of the football brand and how much revenue and donations it can generate for the school.

Pitt needs to find new ways to raise funds given the state’s reluctance to appropriate. Kindling that love through a better quality of student life, fan experience and alumni appreciation will help. But this administration doesn’t understand. So my answer to the question is to have some more patience. And maybe just maybe get on board the PHP OCS concept. That’s how I’m trying to influence a change in thinking. That’s my Blatherite Rebellion.

Comment by TX Panther 10.26.13 @ 9:20 pm

All that being said, who is still going to watch the game vs Ga tech next week?

Comment by panther94 10.26.13 @ 9:20 pm

My turn…finally back home from the game…

….I used to wonder why I would tell parents not to talk to me after I had coached a HS BBall game or AAU summer game, but I would be happy to talk with them the next day or even meet with them if I had hurt one of their “precious children’s” feelings or didn’t give them enough PT.

Tonight I had the great pleasure of having a wonderful dinner with old Pitt friends (several on this site) and their wives and mistresses. We are all old hands at seeing Pitt mediocrity but todays game was exceptionally excruciating and we all needed to vent. Thank God, I was not sitting and posting. Like most of you, I was ready to kill somebody post game.

That’s how I felt after this Pitt Game today. I wanted to confront HCPC and ask him what the F’ he was thinking in the second half when Navy made a halftime adjustment and put 8-9 in the box. The wind was a huge factor today. Pitt had the wind in the 2nd and 3rd quarter, and in the 3rd quarter, with the wind and 8-9 Navy D men on the line of scrimmage and Pitt with a precarious 13-7 lead,HCPC sat on the ball and tried to play conservative. Why on earth with the passing game Pitt has, did he do that! He wasted field position on the 45 and 49 of Navy without even an atttempt to pass. He left a Navy team that competes on every play like it’s their last and plays the 4th quarter like they are assaulting a beach….close…why???

Let me say that this is not my first “rodeo”! I came down to Annapolis twice with Foge and watched Pitt teams favored by 19.5 and 24.5 lose, just like today. I said earlier in the week” I have see worse Navy teams beat better Pitt teams”! Strange bounces, weird plays, unfathomable Pitt mistakes and piss poor QB play all contributed but it really came down to one thing……character! Navy has it…Pitt does not. The moment was too big for Pitt today and they were beaten essentially by a tricky D-2 team.

Reed, my sincere apology. I literrally wanted to physically confront you earlier this year when you spoke to Savege’s shortcomings. I was wrong. He had a horrendous game today and it cost Pitt dearly. All his faults were wide open for everyone to see and Navy had scouted him to a tee.
He cannot throw a short touch pass to save his life, cannot look off a primary reciever (he had secondary receivers wide open with blown Navy coverages 10+ x and still he went with the “play”.. a swing pass out of the backfield to a double covered reciever…and trust me folks, if he had been accurate, he would have thrown 5 INT’s today. His insane escaping a secure pocket to run to the right (and cut field in half)is beyond explanation!…and Navy was ready for all of it.

Thoughts from being at the game…Dr. Tom…it was frick’n cold! Sorry..you were wrong.

*We sat with about 4000 Pitt fans all who came in sollemly (like they were going to a funeral) and left just as solemly..only shaking their heads. No one said much during the game or after. We all just “knew”.

*Pitt had a pep band at the game and they were damn good.

*The wind was a gale at times.

*Pitt/Navy games have always been sunny Fall days and today was no exception except for the wind.

*I must be getting really old because I missed having a bottle of Southern Comfort with me like we used to when liquor was allowed at games.

*Security was amazingly lax and I easily could have brought in a bottle of SC!

Last but not least, I have been a supporter of HCPC and this is the first time I have serious doubt in my mind that he can be a successful head coach.

I read all 454 comments before this one and agree with everyone. Pitt is cheap, Pitt’s administration is to blame for the Big Picture in Football but the buck stops with HCPC. That our special teams (see 20 yard punt which was the final nail in the coffin) do NOT have a coach (only team in D1 Football and you can look it up), that we have a first year non experienced D coordinator….all that is on HCPC!

In the late 3rd quarter and the entire 4th quarter, Navy beat Pitt physically (on the scale of FSU) and mentally (OH God the mistakes, the offsides, motions, 20 yard punts, too many men on the field (3x). It was amazing to see these little 250 lb linemen just flatten the 350 lb D line Pitt oponents, and I don’t want to here that Pitt’s defense was tired…they had a little guy in a red shirt who was on the field calling TO’s for commercials all day. I have never seen so many stoppages of the game…ever.

I said it earlier…I am tired of being a Pitt Fan. Tired that I care and prepare more for a game than the team/coaches do. Tired that I care more about Pitt Football than Smug Steve and the administration. Someone mentioned early about Lucy and the Football. We are Linus and the incompetent Pitt Administration (0r maybe they just are happy we are competitive from time to time)is Lucy.

Folks,Like you, I give my heart, my money and my soul to the Pitt Football Program.
To see this pathetic effort against an outmanned, out classed D2 team is about the final straw.

Still….H2P…but not for much longer.

Dan72 just got home myself-left Pittsburgh at 6 and get home at 11 for this crap. I have to be an idiot. Agree with all you said. To make matters worse I went to the basketball game last night. Saw Nordenberg walking outside the stadium today, felt like asking about the University’s lack of support for the entire athletic department. By the way I too am close to shutting the door on Chryst.

I plan on talking with my priest tomorrow about lifting the Pitt curse. He will probably have to perform an exorcism on Nordy and Corn Hole. After that I’m hoping the demon is cast out and Pitt can go back to winning and having fun.

That’s says about it all, my friend.
He sat on the ball against a service academy team when the QB’s strength is to air it out. Especially with 8-9 in the box.

As I said yesterday, Navy can not beat Pitt.
Only Pitt can beat Pitt. And this coach is about as clueless as Foge was, God rest his soul.

Some guys are just good assistants, they are not Head Coaches. Another Paul comes to mind as well.

As long as we’re blaming the University president and AD for today’s egg-laying — neither of whom, I’m quick to point out, had anything to do with actually planning or calling the game or motivating the players — why not some blame for that super-booster (Sam What’s-his-name)?

By multiple accounts, our shiny new head coach was 3rd out of 3, wasn’t gonna get the job, until Sam.A started throwing his weight around, threw a hissy and called everybody but Santa Claus to threaten to cut off his Million$ in support if HCPC didn’t get the gig.

Listen to this BS from the TRib:

As for the game within a game, Dixon is adjusting to life without center Steven Adams.

Now playing with the Oklahoma City Thunder after one season with the Panthers, Adams provided a legitimate inside threat at both ends. Senior Talib Zanna is expected to fill that role, along with junior Derrick Randall and sophomore Joseph Uchebo.

Adams took about 3 or 4 shots a game and played about 25 minutes at most a game.

Yet now it sounds like he averaged 20 pts and 10 rebounds a game. lmao

He made a few defensive plays a game, but was mostly out of position chasing opposing players around, 25 feet from the hoop.

What a joke these writers are.

Well my two little kids saw typical pitt! Luckily they are young enough to not remember this game. Navy is a great place to see a game, the stadium is perfect size for our two little ones and the fans were great! My kids did have trouble following who Pitt was since we look exactly like Navy, thanks Steve! Pitt beat themselves again! Man I am tired of saying that! No defensive adjustments and another one bites the dust! I guess that Tom Bradley idea doesn’t look so silly after all! I am really starting to question HC now and the mental toughness or lack there of that we have! Going to be tough to get a bowl now! Hail to Pitt, but man it’s hard!

Chryst should sell potatos in the produce section. That’s probably the right fit for someone of his caliber and energy level. Say what you what Todd Graham wins. He should finish with 9 wins this year. I dont blame him in the least except the way he did it. He realized what a disgrace our AD Dept is and what a tool Smug steve is. Laughing stock of D1 football year after year. Congrats Navy. You deserved it and played hard with character. You are soldiers first and football players 2nd. Our group of 2 star Chryst MAC’sters have no talent or heart.

Comment by Moe Greene 10.27.13 @ 6:16 am

Wow, for whatever reason I started paying attention to Pitt football for the first time in decades a couple of years before Wanny was fired. Maybe I thought that Pitt football, even if mediocre, could at least dredge up a Larry Fitzgerald now and then.

Well we all know where that ended up. Seems to be worse than ever. I live in College Park and went to the game on a lark yesterday. Tailgated with a bunch of Pitt fans in Annapolis and everybody acts like we’re all about to go in for a root canal or a colonoscopy rather than a football game. How is this fun?

I think I’ll go back to my Rip Van Winkle routine. Somebody wake me up when this mumbling, bumbling head coach is gone.

Comment by BATR 10.27.13 @ 6:51 am

I love being a PITT fan.

Disappointed in all aspects of yesterday’s game, coaching included, but had a fantastic time visiting with 14 PITT fans who drove down Friday and stayed over night in Columbia. We had drinks, dinner, more drinks and great conversations.

Then on Saturday we all drove to Navy-Marines Memorial Stadium for beautiful weather and really nice tailgates. There were PITT fans everywhere you looked, and we drank, ate, drank and had more good conversations before during and after the game.

That is what being a PITT fan is to me. It is a hobby that gives me enjoyment in many different ways. During the game I was cheering and cursing but as soon as the whistle blew after that FG it was in the past for me.

After the game the guys I was with were unhappy about the outcome and how things went down but we still had some laughs about the PITT football team and program. That is what makes all this fun for me. I get into intense conversations regarding PITT football on here and elsewhere and enjoy that, but the minute it isn’t fun any longer I’ll find something else to do.

On a separate note; who let Sunseri suit up and play on that last drive? 🙂 Savage had a pretty solid game up until then though.

Comment by Reed 10.27.13 @ 6:53 am

It’s all about heart: Navy had it and Pitt had no clue. Sorry. Pitt’s AD needs to reevaluate its football direction or go down to Division II. I go to all Tech home games and can imagine what the Yellow Jackets will do to this Pitt team.

Comment by MariettaMike 10.27.13 @ 6:58 am

This was the first game that I went to this season where I saw “the same old Pitt” reappear.

The Pitt offense responds to the Navy go ahead score with one of their own plus a two point conversion which SHOULD have shifted the momentum over to the Pitt Defense. However, from that point forward the team that just plain old wanted it more rose to the top to win this one, and that team wasn’t Pittsburgh.

Congratulations to Navy. Great venue for a college game, nice weather, all the people from both sides that we met were very accommadating and friendly and the tailgating was a gas!

Too bad Pitt didn’t have a little of that gas at the end of the game though, cause they definitely had an empty tank in the last 2 minutes or so of this contest and let the win get away from them.

Regret to say this however this team
may not win another game.

Lousy hire in DC
No need for a special teams coach?
Can’t beat Navy? Sad stay of affairs
We fired DW for this?

Understand the FSU and VT game but
losing to Navy who was beaten by Toledo?

Disgusted. Tired of 6-6. Losing caused
by penalties, fumbles, 20 yard punts?
This thing is going backwards.

Comment by JR 10.27.13 @ 7:57 am

Don’t know if this has been brought up but Navy had all the breaks – a fluke “Immaculate Reception” touchdown? A pass that Ray Vinopal intercepted but was called out of bounds, on what was a TD drive? A shanked punt?

That being said, I was stunned when I realized PItt only had 3 3-and-outs in the 2nd half. That doesn’t seem like much – till I realized that there were only 4 possessions.

And during what I thought was Savage’s best game. Using the TEs, RBs, and short routes – he distributed the ball well. Too bad he didn’t see a wide open guy 10 yards downfield in front of his face behind the defense on his last play.

Comment by KeyboardKev 10.27.13 @ 8:08 am

I cringe when I see PC interviews, a leader needs to know how to speak. He may have a great football mind but I don’t believe he knows how to communicate this to his players. Not Head Coach material.

Comment by Pittastic 10.27.13 @ 8:31 am

Yes, Pitt has been cheap in the past but they were also working with a lot less money, at least 10 million. We always heard rumblings in past about Pitt being cheap. However have we heard anything about Pitt being cheap since going into the ACC? I know I haven’t. That pick if DC was on Chryst. Chryst engages in cronyism and sticks with his guys. And if there was a guy out there he couldn’t have got cause of money issues Chryst should have leaked that info everywhere. Seriously though what Chryst buddy is left out there who would have required a ton to be DC? Chryst hired then kept Inoke Broketerfield for this year even though the dude doesn’t recruit. The one Chryst buddy that this team actually needed as a coach is in the NFL. How is this team going to be better next year? Team is losing the last bits of Wanny talent and replacing it with a bunch of MAC talent. And Chryst and his staff have shown little in player development. This is depressing.

Comment by Wardapalooza 10.27.13 @ 8:36 am

Check out the other non revenue teams. That will really tell you what a sad state of affairs Pitt athletics is in. Both soccer teams o-fers in ACC. Other teams not much better. It is just a mind set that less than mediocre is OK. Give everyone a trophy!

Comment by JP 10.27.13 @ 8:38 am

Baseball will maybe win 4 To 5 ACC games. Whatever that Athletic Director season tankings was for us in the Big East will be 3x’s lower in ACC. No one cares. Do you guys think other schools that care about Athletics would deal with pederson? He would be gone in 2 days in the SEC or ACC schools that care about sports. Nordenberg is a joke. Praise him all you want its the total body of work. Rankings of Pitt are lower and Athletics is a joke. Facilities are a joke. We have a nice basketball arena thats it. Nothing else is ACC level except that. What a joke.

Comment by Upittbaseball 10.27.13 @ 8:48 am

It’s a cultural thing at Pitt. Winning isn’t important and Pitt doesn’t know what it feels like. It hires on the cheap and can’t get coaches with proven track records and coaching experience. It needed a good guy coach of high integrity that wasn’t going to jump ship at some point for a better gig. It needed to establish stability. So although I can understand and agree with that, I don’t like Pitt being a testing ground for coaches. But our admin allows it. I want proven and well paid coaches. Coaches that can recruit. It helps if you have a personality and are a bit charismatic. We aren’t going to win with two stars in the ACC. We aren’t going to win if the coaches aren’t any good. And the good ones know to avoid Pitt because of its cultural dysfunction. That’s why I say blow it all up and start all over with something radical and fundamentally transcendent. Pitt needs a new path and identity.
