My Article for Yahoo

Yahoo approached Chas about writing a column for their Battle Loyale series and he graciously allowed me the opportunity to bash Virginia Tech for somehow losing to us four times in a row. Here’s the link. It’d be great if people would tweet it, share it on facebook, etc. because it’s a great promo for the site to bring in new visitors. It’s a pretty cool moment for me to see my name on Yahoo’s website as a writer. Hopefully I don’t piss too many VT fans off with the column. I certainly was a lot more critical than the VT writer’s column where he spoke about dining halls.

Justin, very good comeback; humorous and glad you stayed within reasonal boundaries.

Talking smack while still remaining PG is difficult. I had a few ideas that I immediately scrapped because they would be offensive to some. If anyone’s offended by the camo joke, blame Chas. He recommended it during editing. My joke was essentially:

“do you have signs on the edge of campus letting people know to run if they hear banjos?”

It’s a Deliverance reference, which is probably a bit too crude and also probably a cultural reference many will miss.

Save that Line for our for our future match-up at Ped St

Best line:

“A Hokie is pretty much gibberish some guy named O.M. Stull came up with in his imagination in the 19th century. He was paid $5 for his efforts. Ask for your money back. ”

I also read theirs…L-ame.

Justin – The VT Fans would be more angry you called it Limestone vs. Hokie Stone as they all point out to me when I’m there working. LOL

Comment by Upittbaseball 10.11.13 @ 10:30 am

I actually have legit respect for VT’s football team, fans, and school. I only respect PSU fans who have a grasp of reality and PSU grads who don’t care about the football team.

Pitt has a habit of ruining seasons – opponents and its own.

CLASSIC

PittofDreams: I’ve had numerous pitt fans tell me they love that line. It’s a sad but true line.

Nice call POD.

Justin i like the fact that you stayed somewhat humble while still talking some good smack.

Very nice slam overall.

Finally have learned what a Hokie is… and I’m impressed.

Good article Justin. Witty as hell.

Comment by Reed 10.11.13 @ 12:07 pm

Justin – read both yours & the VT columns. Yours was better.

The reason they call it Hokie Stone is that they do not want to be confused with Limestone College in Gaffney, SC.

Like VT, Limestone College has a quarry on campus. Unlike VT, Limestone College has three National Championships (Lacrosse-D2). At the time they won their first (sometime in the early 2000’s), they had the smallest enrollment(<500) of any NCAA school at any level to ever win a national championship in any sport.

BTW, I live in Blacksburg,SC

That was great, Justin!

Well Justin, you have effectively taken care of “talking the talk” for this game in any case. It is this kind of stuff that starts puttin burs under people’s saddles. Do that often enough and you might even stir up a ACC Rivalry against the Hokies. Especially if we are lucky enough to pull off yet another upset over these poor bastards again this year.

Problem is however, that now somebody else has to back up your smack talk by actually “walking the walk”, specifically our Pitt Panthers. From a strategic standpoint I’m more of a Teddy Roosevelt kind of diplomat, “speak softly and carry a big stick”. I would hate to have VT’s players, pregame, to catch wind of this article and then be able to utilize it as inspiration to kick our a$$es. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll trash talk with the best of them, but I usually reserve the occasion for when I have some of my own skin in the game, either actually competing myself, serious money on the line, or both. I much prefer “gloating” after the victory is in the bag, rather than front loading the situation with trash talk that sometimes can come back to haunt you.

I just hope that the Panthers can back up your article Justin, because if we can’t, then all of a sudden your creative editorial talents won’t seem nearly as witty come Sunday morning.

Not criticism, just my POV.

Dr. Tom: If the Hokies players need my column to motivate them, bet the house on Pitt. Last year’s game should be more than enough motivation.

Glad that girl lost 37 pounds in 9 weeks too.

Comment by longsufferingpittfan 10.11.13 @ 1:04 pm

I’ll re-read your article on Sunday morning after we’re done taking away their top 25 ranking on their own turf yet again tomorrow. I’m sure that I’ll find it hilarious then, under those current circumstances!

Good job Justin.

Very cutting piece compared to the VT guy’s mentioning of our 9 National Championships, that was very nice of him. Also glad he liked our best college building in America and maybe the World.

And I believe experiencing all that Pittsburgh offers would far outweigh better dining halls and what Blacksburg doesn’t. (I guess the hunting of little deers and floppy eared wrabbits might better down there)

Elmer Fudd day is everyday in Blacksburg I’m sure !

We might have a winner as to who gets to replace the Hoopie/Hillbillies/Toothlessones.

Very nice work Justin!

Having lived in VA for many years after my time at Pitt I know the state is full of limestone called sub gray wacky. In the end I suppose that wacky daffy duck lost out to the hokie turkey.
