New Depth Chart for New Mexico

No truly significant changes from the first week. More like subtle  adjustments to reality in the depth chart (PDF, p.3).

At running back Bennett is still listed as the starter, but James Conner is listed at number two rather than Malcolm Crockett. That’s the only change on the offense.

For the defense, Ejuan Price is not listed as “OR” at both DE spots. Now he’s only listed as the possible starter with Bryan Murphy. So David Durham has the coaches trust at the other DE spot. Mike Caprara is no longer listed behind Shane Gordon at middle linebacker. It is Mike Galambos. Jevonte Pitts is no longer listed on the 2-deep at both safety spots. Instead he is listed third at free safety behind Ray Vinopal and Cullen Christian. If Vinopal plays like he did last week, he’s going to repeat his fate from last year of not being seen again after two games.

The only other change is on kick returns. Jason Hendricks will not be back there with Lafayette Pitts. Carrying from the FSU game, it is Tyler Boyd back there. Sixteen freshmen or redshirt freshmen are on the 2-deep

1. Connor makes sense
2. Price should be starting, imo. Undersized, yes, but much more athletic than either of the other 2.
3. Didn’t see anything that Durham did to warrant any kind of ‘trust’. Maybe his old man made a big contribution to Pitt or someting.
4. I thought Caprara was supposed to be the 2nd coming of Scott McKillop. Maybe not, maybe they move him to OLB. Galambos is a true frosh. huh
5. Like Boyd back there, however risky if ppl think kickoffs are injury prone.
6. Vinopal……a big meh (so far)

Lafayette Pitts and Tyler Boyd will not return kicks at the same time

Comment by wbb 09.09.13 @ 7:11 pm

I thought the defensive line in general did well vs fsu. they got guys in the backfield like price, grigsby, and Donald but they didn’t finish. they did pretty well against the run.

im more concerned about houses game plan and play calling than the personnel right now. he has a stretch of games where he can really get his sh*t together so hopefully we see drastic improvement

Comment by pk 09.09.13 @ 7:38 pm

I hope House is sleeping at the office until his performance significantly improves.

Comment by TX Panther 09.09.13 @ 9:10 pm

i will wait till after game 3 before i call for the
head of house just in case game one was a one time
bump on the road.
and game 2 wont be a real test that should be a easy
game for any D.
but if at the end of game 3 if the D sucks then house most go this year before game game 4

Chryst needs better assistants and recruiters. But he needs Pitt to open up the pocket book. Pitt won’t because it isn’t serious about winning and will use every excuse in the book to justify its cheapness. I feel sometimes that Chryst is being set up to fail. I hope he doesn’t become Stevie’s scapegoat.

Comment by TX Panther 09.09.13 @ 9:42 pm

McCoy is magnificent! Still can’t believe the TD run or the spin move. Life is way better in the SHADE! Hail to Pitt. Get well Stephens-Howling. UPone

Comment by UPone 09.09.13 @ 9:58 pm

Yep Yep, Shady runs for almost 200 yards in Chip Kelly’s option read offense.

Vick is the perfect QB to run that and Shady is the perfect RB.

This might start a new trend in the NFL, spread option read offenses. Might be what all the new rules are concerning where you can hit QB’s and other offensive players.

Imo, the Spread Option read is a lot more entertaining to watch than a West Coast offense that dinks & dunks it’s way down the field.

We shall see where this is all going. Both NFL favorites going down in flames tonite.

@ FRankie.

I like it,,, the Head of the House…..

….on a Silver Platter no doubt.

PITT is way to cheap to ever fire an asst. coach mid-season unless he did something like Toad Graham’s asst. coach did the other day. Well they might fire him and tell PC to make do before rehiring someone. On the cheap….of course. lol

20 years of misery is officially over! Raise it proud! As bad as this past week was, I’m calling for a great week for the Burgh! Pitt will crush the Lobos, Pirates will get hot and the Steelers will surprise everyone on Monday night vs the Bungals! What a night!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 09.09.13 @ 11:17 pm

Sweet Caroline. If the Steelers beat the Bengals i will give you 10k.

Comment by Upittbaseball 09.09.13 @ 11:30 pm

I’m excited to see how good this team is going to be in 2-3 years. 16 frosh / rs frosh on the two deep is pretty significant. More talent developing behind our upperclassmen.

Optimism abounds.

Hail to Pitt!

Can we remove Matt House from the coaching depth chart? just asking

Comment by Coach Ditka 09.10.13 @ 6:06 am

I’M BACK! Did you guys miss me? Just home from a two week Alaskan cruise vacation. Spent Monday afternoon (East coast evening) on a whale watch excursion, so I missed the FSU game. Pretty much what everyone expected, Winston smoked us! It will be interesting seeing how he performs throughout the rest of the season. He seems to be the real deal.

This week we should be able to masquerade as the FSU team over the Lobos. If the OL can protect Savage, we should be able to pick them apart like FSU did to us. Let Boyd loose this week both at the WR position and on kick returns, he is a weapon, use him!

I agree on getting Voytik on the field this week, he needs game time experience! He is just a play away from being our starting QB as well.

This team will grow a lot during the season. We are very, very young but are playing with heart and spirit! I liked the way they came out and punched FSU right in the mouth with our initial TD. It was the turnovers that really killed that momentum. Hopefully this week will be just the reverse. A solid victory will do much to instill confidence going forward for this new group of young guys.

BTW, Alaska was FANTASTIC! Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.10.13 @ 6:10 am

The game should slow down for them on Saturday, allowing better execution. A much needed tune-up, although they better take it seriously.

Hopefully enough real Pitt Fans show up and make noise. Should be a nice day. Practice will be tough today, supposed to hit 90 and high humidity.

Congrats to the Bucco’s and their new ace with a 1-0 shutout.

Don’t lose your head Caroline, Steelers in for a tough season. They can’t stop the run, or protect Ben. They are toast unless LeVeon Bell and Jarvis Jones both turn out to be immediate superstars.

Hard to believe we had Revis, Fitz, and Shady, three of the NFL’s superstars, shows that football is the ultimate team sport and you need more than one great player at a time. But it sure is fun to have at least one.

Comment by gc 09.10.13 @ 6:22 am

Welcome back Dr. Tom. It can get dark around here without you. Especially after a loss.

At least we won in a recruiting battle this week.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by gc 09.10.13 @ 6:25 am

Tx Panther, Pitt has opened up its pocket book for one coach, and one coach only …. Fraid Graham.

Comment by wbb 09.10.13 @ 7:45 am

Dr. Tom – God Bless you (Was it Royal Carribean)????If so My Mother in Law was on the same cruise….Maybe you saw some folks with LSU Gear on???? I can’t imagine being on a 10 day cruise with her. LOL

Comment by Upittbaseball 09.10.13 @ 8:45 am

The defense did do pretty well against the run and overall against FSU. 7-11 on third down, 533 total yards, 156 rushing yards or 5.2 per attempt and only 27-29 thru the air for 377 yds. This defense will be good give it 4 to 5 years and just think by then, House will probably be able to make some basic adjustments. Yes we are on the right track…..H2P.

Comment by DJS 09.10.13 @ 9:31 am

Upittbaseball, Nope, Celebrity Cruise ship, the Solstice. the largest football contingent I saw were Texas A&M fans, they are all in a trance watching their spoiled brat Heisman Trophy winner tear it up on the field again this year. Johnny Football is apparently sure trying his hardest to present himself as the biiggist Ahole in college football, however.

I’ll be at this Saturday’s Pitt game, driving up from DC for the weekend. Since it is supposed to be great weather for the weekend, I just might try to do a doubleheader and catch a Buco game on Saturday night after the Pitt game.

Lets hope that I’m a lucky charm for both clubs this weekend.

Hail to Pitt!

how is gonzo still starting, put thomas in. is there no one bette then Vinople? he was awful last yr and did not approve at all. not what i was expecting.

Comment by mike 09.10.13 @ 10:58 am

Since a majority of first year freshman red shirt can we say true freshman and freshman.

red shirt = freshman
true 1st year = true freshman

or year and eligibility
1/4 2/4 3/4 4/4 – 2/5 3/5 4/5 5/5 6/6

Comment by Tackle made by Hugh 09.10.13 @ 2:28 pm

Expect to see Hendricks or another player back there with Boyd. Too many #23s on the field at once?

Comment by AJMayo 09.10.13 @ 2:48 pm

Why is Thomas not starting at LB? Surely last weeks failure of the LB’s to drop into coverage would have shaken things up?
