Sorry, Pitt fans but Notre Dame is now the early leader for most likely to ferment a new, nasty basketball rivalry with Duke.
Here’s how it went down. The New York Post had a wide-ranging interview with Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. In the interview he was less than diplomatic regarding new member Notre Dame:
Q: Do you like the relationship with Notre Dame the ACC agreed to (joining in all sports except football, but playing five football games a season against ACC foes) in order to add the Fighting Irish?
A: I think you can’t do something for one that you’re not willing to do for all in these type of situations. I would never have accepted personally them coming in and not being totally in.
Why don’t Duke and North Carolina do something different in basketball? I mean it’s not right. I’m happy that they’re part of it I’m just not happy the way that they’re apart of it.
They add value but, just being old-fashioned, [if] we’re playing cards, we all get five cards. That’s why they were never a member of the Big Ten.
This came out the day after ACC moving day. So right after all the praises were sung of the new members and conference, Krzyzewski just fires away.
Meanwhile every old Big East member — and anyone in the Big 10 — is just nodding their heads at the statement. In that respect it is hardly controversial since we know that at one time or another everyone has said or thought it in the old Big East. In fact it seems Krzyzewski has long maintained that point of view with regards to membership in the ACC with ND.
It’s common knowledge in college basketball circles that Krzyzewski was not happy with the decision last fall of ACC commissioner John Swofford to extend an invitation to Notre Dame, which was able to keep its independent status in football, playing five games a year against ACC schools.
Each summer during the July recruiting period, and again at the Final Four each April, [ND basketball coach Mike] Brey and Krzyzewski go to dinner. At almost every sit-down for the last few years, conference realignment surfaced. Each time Brey, who spent eight seasons at Duke as Krzyzewski’s assistant, wondered about Notre Dame one day joining the ACC. Each time, Krzyzewski never budged — you can come, but you’d better bring football. Otherwise, you’re not in.
Now Notre Dame is in.
With ND in the ACC it also means (I think) that it will be the first former Duke assistant turned head coach within the ACC. In that respect Kryzewski has been a lot like his own mentor — Bob Knight. Discouraging his former assistants (and players) from taking coaching jobs within the same conference.
As you would expect, Brey was not happy to have his happy-joy time pissed on by Krzyzewski.
“That’s been out there — ‘God, they got in, but they got in without bringing football,’” Brey said. “I’m like, ‘We’re in man, pat us on the back. We’re in the family.’”
Brey has been in South Bend (and in the shadow of the football program) for quite a while. He is well and fully versed in how invested the alumni and the school is in their precious football independence. He isn’t about to come down on any side but the Domers.
That led Brey to make the equivalence argument of UNC and Duke to ND.
“They live in a whole different world,” Brey said of the two teams that have combined to win 36 ACC tournament titles with 33 Final Fours and nine national championships. “They’re on TV more than anyone. They get more exposure than any team in the league and rightfully so.
“They do kind of have their own world and they’ve earned that, just as we’ve earned remaining independent in football for now.”
Which conflates media exposure to an independent deal that lets ND keep all its football money and essentially its own table. UNC and Duke definitely get more media exposure than the rest of the ACC in basketball. And it is arguably earned — and aided by the slobbering by Dick Vitale — but they don’t get to keep the money from all the TV exposure.
But suffice to say the first Duke-ND basketball game in 2014 gets an extra storyline tossed on top for good measure.
We need Jamie to create this rivalry. He needs to start talking smack about Coach K. Maybe make fun of his hair or something.
Especially when they could have saved the Big East early on with a full membership. Miami, BC and VA Tech would have never left. Hope it doesn’t happen to the ACC. Not a fan of Coach K but enjoy the sour grapes.
Wouldn’t surprise me if Swofford nudged Coach K to say something.
Put a fire under Notre Dame to get all in knowing there would be no backlash of Coach K comments.
Swofford on the other hand couldn’t get away saying those things.

Guess CK might not be to excited about ND not being a full member and the ACC having to kiss their rears in that respect. Most likely he is unhappy with the likes of Pitt, the Cuse and DaVille being on the schedule as well. Cry Coach K CRY and hope all 4 former BE schools make it harder for you and your buddy Roy “Boy” Williams to dominate the ACC on a regular basis…
To our ACC brethren… ND was part of the reason the Big East fell apart. They refused to throw football a life preserver even when it was obvious that the ship was going to go down. Don’t believe for one moment that in the end they would do the same to, as ND Coach Brey put it, “family”.

I think they were ripe to be squeezed. They wanted a place for their hoops and Olympic sports, and they wanted the ACC badly!!

I don’t see how having their Olympic sports in the conference, and a guarantee of playing them once every 4 years had any effect on an FSU or Clemson. They have big games every week.
Also, it’s going to be one home game for them, every 8 years.
Maybe that’s Swoffords end game. Let them get acclamated, get comfortable, then after 5 years, tell them, “hey, we need to know, are you in or out”??
Right now, they got every single thing they want, and I don’t see them bringing that much.
In hindsight, if Swofford could have gotten the GOR earlier, ND would have been a non-issue.

I could see, if they were in the conference completely, and one division got to play them every year, and the other divison would play them every couple of years, and a chance to play them in the championship game.
Just don’t see how playing them once every 4 or 5 years suddenly has FSU, Clemson, GTU, Miami, UNC, Va. Tech suddenly agreeing to a GOR.
And I could be 100% incorrect!! LOL
However as Frankie mentioned, having ND did bump up everyone’s piece of the pie, another $3 Mil to $20 Mil each.
Also having ND in with hoops and Olympic sports will definitely have in effect in helping obtain an ACC network. As that brings in a large chunk of the populace (think ND’s massive subway alumni) into play, that without ND would pay no nevermind to the ACC sports.

Get ND on board, for only a 5 year stint.
Get a GOR for 15 years, get the conference stable, get a televsion network up and running, and then, in 3 or 4 years, have a little sit down with the ND people, and let them know, when the contract comes up in a year or two, we’re gonna need you to be all in, or you’re out.
He’ll have a lot more leverage then.
He’s pretty crafty, and made a lot of right moves, so, I’ll default to him.

You slowly have to bring around the ND faithful on joining for football. They are not immediately going to give up playing ALL their traditional foes immediately. With the ACC deal they already are giving up Michigan.
It’s called incrementalism and the Gov’t is killing us all with it !
With 5 ACC games in the fold, adding 3 more down the road is not nearly the mountain to climb, as 8 would be immediately. Yes/No ?

I KNOW football is king, and the cash cow. I really do get that.
But, some of these schools take their Olympic sports very seriously. Lacrosse, soccer, gymnastics, baseball.
Not everyone, certainly. Notre Dame does. As do a lot of schools in the ACC.
Not for the money, but for the pride of, “helping our student athletes participate.”
I don’t do this often. None of us do. However the old “friend of a friend of a friend” is a ND professor.
I’m telling you, between academia, students, fans, alumni, they were not going to let ND go to the Big 12.
Wasn’t going to happen.
It may be different and you could call me on it, if as an example, ND couldn’t make any money as an Independent, in the ACC, or the Big 10.
Then people may have said, “well, we’re in a pinch, the Big 12 is our only offer”, we better go.
However, with a lot of other options, this person with a good source, has told me, that the Big 12 was not on anyone’s radar.
No one was about to lug the soccer team to Waco.
No one was going to swimming and diving meets at Lubbock.

Maybe ND said, “look, the ACC is where we need to end up, but I need time”. This seems plausible.
I said this last year, and a few other did too.
There is no way ND was staying in the BE for it’s Olympic sports.
They even got out sooner that I thought.
Football is king. However, schools like ND are not about to let their Olympic sports, especially womens sports, languish in some conference, and be perceived as 2nd, 3rd or 4th rate.
Football is the money maker, but to not acknowledge the fact, that there are a lot of other outside forces and players for some of these schools in academia, alum, administration etc. etc. is naive.
Oh, these comments aren’t to you Emel. These are just out loud thoughts about the situation.
Also, I can’t believe Swofford will let ND just sign up every 5 years as an ongoing agreement.
Don’t forget, as big as ND is, the AD’s and presidents at these other university’s think they are the king of the hill. Sitting in the ivory towers, they aren’t gonna be told what to do on ND’s whim.

I can see a few years from now though, Swofford and Swarbuck sitting down again and revisiting ND’s stand in the ACC.

My understanding is that he liked the addition of Pitt and Cuse and said that they will help with the NCAA tourney.

But the real problem is that he was at Greentree at all. Give the players some room to breathe; let them play without staring over their shoulders and controlling everything.
What did I see?
* I liked Newkirk. He’s a quick, bouncy athlete. Got to the hole a couple times, played some attacking defense. Don’t think he has much range yet, but shot fundamentals look fine. He had to guard Lance Jeter last night, who was physically just too much for him, but he competed and showed some grit. If Dixon doesn’t play him a lot, he’s nuts because of everything he can do that Robinson can’t. (Get to the rim, slash, pressure the ball….)
* Durand Johnson is the same. Can shoot, can’t do anything else. Really struggled to guard Cressler, the Plum kid who had a nice freshman year at Cornell. Johnson’s all right-handed, can’t get to the rim and can’t handle the ball. He’s useful for one thing — bring him off the bench for some instant offense and then send him right back there.
* Artis — classic tweener. 6’5, 6’6″ tops. Too slow to play 3, too small to play 4. Won’t have any impact this coming year…..
* Mike Young — I’m hopeful. Looks a solid 6’8″, has more polish to his game than you would expect. Not a leaper, but blocked a few shots on timing. Has some offensive know-how….not dribble drive skills, but can put the ball in the hoop. Certainly not a center, but should develop into a solid performer at forward.
Best athlete there was Ovie Soko from WVU. Wow.

Newkirk/Mostella would be an exciting backcourt.
An extra $3M is nothing to sneeze at, if Frankie’s numbers are right, but think about how much more ACC membership would be worth if ND added another 3 garmes or even better went “all in”.
ND wants nothing to do with the B10 as they would be ignored like PSU when the B10 leaders made decisions and the B12 is simply a non-fit for ND. They don’t have any choice, and in 3-4 years, the leverage will all be with Swafford and the ACC so expect big changes to ND’s relationship.
There was an internet rumor he might not have qualified yet. I don’t know if it was just a rumor or if there was truth to it. In any event, on his u-tube dunk contest interview he sounded intelligent and articulate and not like the kind of kid who you might suspect of being a poor student. If he isn’t/wasn’t currently eligible he might have either needed to finish a HS class last month or to take one this summer. Or, perhaps, he is waiting on the NCAA clearinghouse to approve a class he has already completed. Those folks are known for being far from prompt.
It appears to be an LOI issue even though he as been granted full release he actually has to wait a year.

ND was not going to join the BT. Reason
ND wanted to join the BT in the thirties
but was denied because the school
is catholic. Therefore ACC had leverage
as it was the ND’s best option. That said
ND’s commitment to play 5 games is the
next best situation for the ACC.
Next issues move the BB tournament
to the MSG thereby cutting the BT out
of the NYC. ND helps here as does
the Cuse.

Newkirk had 23 on some creative drives (that would be a new thing at Pitt) and pullup jumpers.
Appears he needs to work at the D though. Of course in these games, probably you’re not getting much ‘help’ D and the kids want to run.
Durand Durand had 21. What was real interesting was that Chevy Troutman scored 23 and controlled the boards.
Zanna had a monster game with 28 & 17. However it appears all the teams with Pitt players lost except for SPK who also has Mike Young besides Patterson who again didn’t play. But they are the only undefeated team.
And nothing wrong with JD’s hair. FYI, we use gel to get out of the house ASAP, since you just put some in and comb your hair and it’s good to go for the day. Certainly better than getting a jarhead buzzcut or going the Mr. Clean baldeagle look.
