There hasn’t been any public mention of the status of Sheldon Jeter transfer situation over the holiday weekend. Whether Jeter is appealing directly to Vandy over transfer restrictions or some other quiet discussion is occurring is unknown.

What is known is that after the initial outcry over the restriction on Jeter, there has been the careful pushback from Vandy/Stallings. No actual statement or anything to quote. Just pushing their story as a “source.”

The claim being that Jeter wasn’t a man about his departure.

Regardless of whether or not it’s fair to put a block on a player receiving a scholarship in his first year at a new school (blocking doesn’t prevent the player from transferring to a school, but does cloud the process with the NCAA), there is a right and wrong way to depart. Jeter tweeted “Due to some personal issues, I am leaving Vanderbilt University to be closer to my family.’’ According to a source with direct knowledge, he didn’t meet face-to-face with Stallings to tell him he was leaving. Jeter, a freshman forward from Beaver Falls, Pa., isn’t the first nor the last to mishandle a departure. There is a mature way to deal with leaving. Evan Gordon left Arizona State two weeks ago. He went in and told Herb Sendek he was out. The conversation didn’t last more than a few minutes. But at least there was one. Jeter averaged 5.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 17.5 minutes a game. He’ll probably end up at Pitt. He may be on scholarship by next season. Cooler heads may prevail here. But most of the time the reason there is animosity over an exit is the way in which it is handled.

There are a couple problems here.

Let’s start with how the timeline was presented by Andy Katz on this.

Jeter tweeted “Due to some personal issues, I am leaving Vanderbilt University to be closer to my family.’’ According to a source with direct knowledge, he didn’t meet face-to-face with Stallings to tell him he was leaving.

Now if you read this, it would suggest that Jeter abruptly tweeted out his departure with Stallings and Vandy finding out the same time as everyone else. There’s nothing in the piece as a whole to suggest otherwise.

Except that is not entirely true. Jeter didn’t tweet that out until that night (around 8 pm). Prior that, Vandy had already issued a press release.

Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings has announced that forward Sheldon Jeter is leaving the program.

“Sheldon has indicated that he’d like to play closer to home, and we wish him the best,” said Stallings.

That was released sometime in the afternoon — before the tweet.

So, Stallings and Vandy did know at least a while in advance. Was it hours or days? No one really knows. There were rumors of Jeter’s departure for at least a week prior to the announcement.

Then there’s the issue of “the right way” to do it. Nowhere in the piece does Andy Katz say that Jeter didn’t talk to Stallings or Vandy’s staff in some form. Just that he didn’t go directly into Stallings office and tell him he wanted to leave. Forget that Jeter was already back in Beaver Falls for at least a few days prior — not down in Nashville, Tennessee.

Is that better? Yes. I think so. Face-to-face is always better.

But Katz is essentially claiming that Jeter is being blocked because he didn’t drive or fly back to Tennessee. Meet directly with Stallings and tell him he’s leaving. That a phone call wasn’t good enough, and that is why Stallings is blocking his transfer?

What he is saying is that Stallings is pitching a tantrum and lashing out at Jeter, because he thinks Jeter wasn’t mature in his handling this. Umm, isn’t that rather immature?

There were rumors of Jeter leaving well before Vandy’s press release or Jeter’s tweet …. I’m talking a couple of weeks. It would be hard to believe that a face-to-face between coach and player did not occur within that timeframe.

At least with Shell and ASU there was a weak defense. There’s no defense here.

Comment by Justin 05.28.13 @ 8:30 am

dont you wonder what happened with kane
did pitt want him is he comeing or is it over
was it pitt that said thanks but no thanks
or was it kane.
i would like to know but we never will.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 8:55 am

Ya know,
If Dixon had offered Jeter last year instead of Chris Jones, this would be a non-issue.
Jeter was really hoping for an offer from Pitt and wanted to come to Pitt.
He chose Vandy over Wisky and SC due to academics.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 05.28.13 @ 9:08 am

FRANKCAM, my guess (and it’s just a guess) that JD is having 2nd thoughts. Not only does Kane have to complete coursework to become eligible, he does carry some baggage.

The other part of it MAY be that (1) we still are not fully aware if Jeter is coming, or (2) that JJ is leaving. JD may be counting on at least one of the two occurring.

Comment by wbb 05.28.13 @ 9:28 am

Wbb it could be the baggage put i dont see
how jeter or jj have any thing to do with it.
becuse if jj stays we still have 2 to give
and if he leaves we have 3 to give
so we could take jeter and kane both they play different postions .

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 9:46 am

how many 6’6 / 6’7 players are allowed (even for a Dixon roster)?

Artis, Patterson, Jeter, Kane, Jones, Nwenkwo, D Johnson, JJ

Comment by wbb 05.28.13 @ 9:51 am

Wbb kane is only 6 foot 4 but even if he were 6 foot 7 better that then no players.
i dont want us to go into ACC with just 10 players
and would rather have 6 players 6 foot 7 then 6 players 6 foot 4 we need hight with only 1 center
on team.
plus players dont seam to be lineing up to come to
pitt.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 9:57 am

OK, my new theory is that it’s Kane choosing now that Memphis is allegedly interested … probably because that their style of play is more NBA-style than Pitt’s

Comment by wbb 05.28.13 @ 10:41 am

Tra’von Chapman due in court today at 2:15 for preliminary hearing.

Interesting to see if case goes beyond here.

Comment by PittofDreams 05.28.13 @ 10:49 am

POD,
Thanks for the info.
If girl doesn’t show up (ie. payoff), then presumably there is no case and case is dismissed. However, I do believe cops have pictures of bruising therefore can proceed without her.
Nonetheless, it will be interesting in how this plays out from Chryst punishment perspective.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 05.28.13 @ 11:01 am

Kane is still listed as “High Interest” for a transfer to PITT, on one site.

Perhaps JD told him, you pass the classes and we’ll take you.

In the meantime, the spot is open and if something better comes along, well……..

My understanding is Jeter wouldn’t be eligible for this season unless……

we find a sick relative !

Comment by EMel 05.28.13 @ 12:19 pm

Though there is this from the CBS twit:

Jeff Borzello ?@jeffborzello 3h

DeAndre Kane is still scheduled to visit Iowa State today, but it’s now “up in the air,” per a source. Memphis making strong push.

Comment by EMel 05.28.13 @ 12:22 pm

Iowa State plays a real uptempo game, so like all these kids, they dream about playing in the NBA.

And both Iowa State and Memphis offensive styles are more conducive to showcasing one’s talents for the NBA.

Meaning unless JD brings in a new asst.coach, we will forever be the grinding defensive minded, blue collar team from the Steel City who quite can’t get “over the hump”. And a 2nd or 3rd round flameout in the Big Dance.

C’est la vie !

Comment by EMel 05.28.13 @ 12:30 pm

Emel. You still mad at me? Are we still on for beers at the FSU PITT game? May as well throw in a cigar or 3 as well.

Comment by Upittbaseball 05.28.13 @ 12:44 pm

“this train will stop at Tucumcari”.

Comment by Dan 05.28.13 @ 12:48 pm

Wbb ok that could be it.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 12:50 pm

Dan Tucumcari. i like trains .

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 12:57 pm

EMel over the hump we must go over the hump
i like that we must hump the hump over the hump
get the hump out of are way go around the hump
go thru the hump the dam hump.
sorry EMel the hump made me nuts for a humping
minute sorry.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 1:06 pm

Trevor Lacy the SG from bama who was a top 50 player 2 years ago will vist PITT tomorrow
but if we sign him he must sit out a year.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 1:17 pm

@FRANKCAN, you’re on it!!! LOL

Comment by Dan 05.28.13 @ 1:21 pm

Wbb maybe that is it if we sign lacy and save one for jeter and jj does not go then we have none for kane. we only have 3 to give if jj goes.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 1:22 pm

With Kane, doesn’t he have to pass classes in order to be eligible for next year? No reason to have Kane if he can’t play next year right?

Comment by Wardapalooza 05.28.13 @ 1:23 pm

lol Frankcan

Afternoon delight.

Or a hump a day keeps the doctor away !

Comment by EMel 05.28.13 @ 1:37 pm

@upittbaseball

I do want to see you in Pitt gear .

And if you have good cigars……….

maybe

Maybe a little high end bourbon too !

Comment by EMel 05.28.13 @ 1:40 pm

@ Ward

I think we should just bring Kane in to disrupt the team……don’t you ?

Comment by EMel 05.28.13 @ 1:42 pm

Emel – You got it but I only wear the script. I am in Miami today and have a few Cubans I will bring. I’m a scotch guy! Frankcan – Hey the last Lacy from Alabama was a stud, I know it was football but good karma with that name.

Comment by Upittbaseball 05.28.13 @ 2:51 pm

POD,
Sam Werner tweeted that Chapman prelim has been delayed until June.
I’m guessing that means one of two things in my opinion.
– They are negotiating a deal/plea/etc
– The victim was a no-show at court.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 05.28.13 @ 3:18 pm

UPitt Baseball, I will trade you a good bottle of single malt for a Cuban at the FSU Game!

Comment by Dan 72 05.28.13 @ 6:06 pm

JJ MORE to vist rutgers this week or next.
i dont get it why not stay here .
why sit out a year to play at rutgers ie he being pushed out the whole thing makes no sence

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 7:36 pm

JJ? Rutgers? Doesn’t JJ have enough troubles? Doesn’t Rutgers have enough troubles? JJ is probably meeting right now with their new athletic director.lol. At least he wouldn’t get basketballs thrown at him for taking that corner jumper fifteen seconds after entering the game!

Come on, JJ Moore. Pitt needs someone to come directly off the bench and start hoisting them up ice cold!

Comment by art 05.28.13 @ 8:04 pm

Dan72. You are on! Will give you 4 of them. Churchill size!

Comment by Upittbaseball 05.28.13 @ 9:20 pm

This reads like he’s being pushed out. Why would he go to Rutgers?

Comment by panther94 05.28.13 @ 9:27 pm

panther94 yes i dont get it something is nuts
it does not add up.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.28.13 @ 10:42 pm

Buttgers ?

Why on Earth would someone sit out a year to play at Buttgers?

I mean he would probably get a gig in Europe after next season. Why not make some money the following year instead of playing for the losers in Piscataway.

Unless maybe he has some sick relatives back home, so he can play this year.

I can’t imagine JD is chasing him, given our lack of experience and depth. Moore would be the 2nd or 3rd leading returning starting. Albeit two of them play the same position.

Comment by EMel 05.28.13 @ 10:43 pm

On the Baseball front:

In 11 innings:

Bucs win……Bucs win !

Over the AL Central leading Tigers.

Grilli strikes out the side, the heart of the Tigers lineup, Cabrera, Fielder & Hunter.

After Walker (the Pgh. kid) homers in the Top of 11th.

This is the Year !!!

Comment by EMel 05.28.13 @ 10:46 pm

We need a Pitt Blather Tent for PITT/FSU .

Chas…….

Comment by EMel 05.28.13 @ 10:50 pm

Emel, I faced Grilli back in the day. He was pretty good at Seton Hall.

Comment by Upittbaseball 05.29.13 @ 6:16 am

at 11:30 pm EDST last night, Grilli struck out the heart of the Tigers’ order (including the defending Triple Crown Winner) while legendary Mariano Rivera gave up 3 straight hits to the Mets to snatch defeat from victory.

Experience tells us the Pirates will meet a fate come late August similar to Pitt’s basketball in March, while the real diehards will hold out hope that this is the year that the Buccos achieve what Pitt’s Ultimate team has just accomplished.

Comment by wbb 05.29.13 @ 7:31 am

Sooo…you’re saying that the Pirates will make the playoffs, but lose in the first round?? I’ll take it!!

Comment by JCE 05.29.13 @ 8:19 am

No, JCE, although I can see why you would think that.

The key wording of my post is ‘come late August’

Comment by wbb 05.29.13 @ 8:22 am

Just kidding….I knew what you meant. Just having fun with the general desperation us Pirates fans have for some kind of end of season success!

Comment by JCE 05.29.13 @ 8:43 am

I grew up a big Pirates fan, listening to Prince and Woods or King, on the radio all the time. Nowadays, I pay attention but it doesn’t bother me much at all when they falter … same with Steelers.

Pens and Pitt (FB/BB) are the only teams that disturb me these days …. maybe I’ll jump on the Ultimate bandwagon

Comment by wbb 05.29.13 @ 8:57 am

Pitt.Dan83

I for one have never seen Chris Jones play, so I’m not capable of judging whether he was a better recruit than Sheldon Jeter. Has Jeter really set the bar so high with his 5.5 points per game that Chris Jones can’t possibly be better?

Let’s not make Sheldon Jeter out to be the next Jesus Shuttlesworth. If he comes fine. If he doesn’t, fine too.

Comment by Denny 05.29.13 @ 1:45 pm

@wbb
Woods aka the “Possum” was by far the best color guy of his or any era. Prince mouthed off to him one too many times the story goes and between innings Woods told him if he ever pulled that stunt again he was going to toss Prince out of the booth two stories below.
Probably should have.
As for Jeter, the college world of sports is politics at the highest level.
Our leader? Cyanide.

Comment by SFPitt 05.29.13 @ 6:21 pm

Grilli goes thru the heart of Detroit’s lineup again.

They manage a hit and a deep flyout by Cabrera.

But it’s nothing but a big old can of corn.

Nice comeback by the Bucs in the bottom of the 7th with a 4 run inning.

I say this is going to be the year, as they’ve added some quality front line pitchers since last year and some quality bench players.

Something they didn’t have the last 2 years when they faded.

Even though we have the 3rd best record in the NL or 2nd after tonite, we’re still 2nd in the divisions as the Cards have the best record in MLB.

Let’s go Bucs
Let’s go Pitt

You gotta have faith to believe in both !

Comment by EMel 05.29.13 @ 9:32 pm

Re: Jeter,Kane & etc. Nothing wrong with having a couple of xtra ships to give next year. As long as the roster is 9-10 plus the 2-3 walk-ons = 11-13, that’s OK. Unless you get a guy who can play immediately who will be a starter or 1st or 2nd guy off the bench there is no real pressing need for 2013-14 season.

Comment by pitt1972 05.30.13 @ 6:00 am

Emel, I hope you are right but off recent history I think I will wait until mid July before I take them too serious. They have made enough improvements too make it to .500 though. Marte and Martin are nice upgrades as are Wandy and Liriano. Locke has started neatly and Gomez has been a nice surprise.
