Tepid on Kane

It’s not that I hate that DeAndre Kane is transferring to Pitt. Afterall, he is intending to be a graduate transfer so it is a one-year deal. Meaning he isn’t tying up the scholarship beyond 2013-14. That is assuming he passes the two courses he has to take, but why worry about academics with Kane. I mean he only needed an extra year of prep school and still wasn’t able to be academically eligible at Marshall (!?) as a freshman. How could anyone be worried?

Well, there are chemistry/personality issues.

It’s just a hunch, but I reckon Kane didn’t receive a letter of recommendation from Herrion after last month’s falling out.

Just in case you felt the statement from Tom Herrion on Kane leaving was nebulous.

Marshall coach Tom Herrion cut loose DeAndre Kane because he was tired of his act.

Now, just because he and Herrion clashed is not enough to say he’s a big risk. Herrion, himself, can be quite prickly. Especially when the team struggles. And Marshall was a big disappointment last year.

Kane will have something to prove with Pitt.

He’d likely see significant playing time — if not start — right away. And he’d join a Panthers team headed into its first season in the ACC, which is becoming the hands-down best basketball conference in America. It’s miles ahead of either the old or new iteration of Conference USA, so if he wants a professional career, he’ll be trying to prove it among the best hoops talent in the nation.

One of the issues with Kane is that he was a little too eager at times to score by himself — that he always needed the ball in his hand. As many assists as he dished (7.0/gm), he also lost it a lot (4.2 turnovers/gm). And then there are the other holes in his game.

He shot only 24.8 percent from 3-point range and 52.1 percent on free throws this past season but scored in double figures in 20 of 28 games, with seven games of 20 points or more and a season-high 33 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Hofstra.

My god, that’s Trey Zeigler music.

SEASON TEAM MIN FGM-FGA FG% 3PM-3PA 3P% FTM-FTA FT% REB AST BLK STL PF TO PTS
2012-13 PITT 15.5 1.8-4.1 .444 0.0-0.1 .000 0.8-1.6 .490 2.0 1.2 0.3 0.3 1.7 1.1 4.4

And Kane:

SEASON TEAM MIN FGM-FGA FG% 3PM-3PA 3P% FTM-FTA FT% REB AST BLK STL PF TO PTS
2012-13 MRSH 37.1 5.5-13.6 .403 1.1-4.5 .248 3.1-5.9 .521 4.4 7.0 0.2 1.8 2.7 4.2 15.1

I don’t see a huge upgrade in terms of Trey Zeigler to DeAndre Kane when you look at Zeigler’s numbers at Central Michigan and Kane’s at Marshall.

Fear inducing at the free throw line — especially for a wing guard. Lousy from outside the arc. Kane has better assists numbers, but also higher turnover figures.

Zeigler struggled at Pitt in two ways. He was overmatched by the rise in talent faced every night. He did not find his openings to attack the basket, on which his game depended. The other was that he just did not fit with the rest of the team. He was not comfortable on the perimeter moving the ball around. If he wasn’t heading north-south, he was useless.

In this respect, the bullishness of Kane might be a good thing. He wants to attack. He may do some selfish things with the ball, but maybe Pitt needs a little of that — with respect towards driving to the basket. Provided Kane is able to handle the upgrade in competition.

I understand that in many respects, Pitt and Dixon have to take this chance on Kane. And the local kid comes home storyline is appealing as hell. But make no mistake. This is not a risk-free situation. (And if it does, you know damn well I will go with “The Kane Mutiny” as a post headline.)

Yes, the comparison to Zeigler is unavoidable. I always thought that Zeigler’s skill set was better suited to playing a Nas Robinson style small (but active) power forward role (i.e., attacking the basket and beating taller PF’s with superior quicks).

I see Kane the same way. I really don’t like playing anyone at the 2G who lacks a 3-ball game and shoots FTs poorly.

But, I guess, as a 1-year “insurance policy” the pickup is at least okay since, like Zeigler, he would seem to have enough handle to help get the ball up court against teams that press continually (although I would hate to have him on the floor in late game situations where shootings FTs is critical).

Comment by pitt1972 05.09.13 @ 7:59 am

dixon is desperate right now. and can you really blame him???

Comment by Coach Ditka 05.09.13 @ 8:01 am

I think he was desperate until he landed Uchebo. Frontcourt was a major issue weakness. Backcourt not nearly as much of a problem. I doubt Kane–if he graduates and arrives plays any more than Zeigler did–unless Uchebo proves to not be healthy and Dixon plays Kane in a Nas Robinson role rather than as guard. But, that’s just my personal opinion.

Comment by pitt1972 05.09.13 @ 8:21 am

being he is not eligible until he passes the courses, I assume he cannot sign anything finalizing his transfer to Pitt until then.

Never saw him play at Marshall but do remember some write-ups talking about his talent there … and I do remember him as being a really good player at Schenley .. so who knows’

I’m with Chas here, JD would be getting an experienced, talented player for 1 year … if he becomes a problem, then sit him or send him packing.

Comment by wbb 05.09.13 @ 8:32 am

If he drives to the basket and makes a decent percentage of his shots when he gets there, he will be an upgrade over Zeigler. I felt Zeigler did a decent job of driving to the basket, he just did not make a lot of the resulting shots.

Comment by HbgFrank 05.09.13 @ 8:34 am

I guess the question still is, who is going to be the leader on this team? Patterson?, Robinson?

The guy that calls the players only meeting when things go south, the guy that wants the ball when the game is on the line…

If no one steps up, Kane could be the problem that Chas fears.

If no one steps up, we will lose a lot of games.

In the past we could say this is Knights team, or Wanamakers, or Fields or even X. We need that guy.

Comment by gc 05.09.13 @ 8:43 am

I think Robinson will be that leader, and do a great job.

Comment by HbgFrank 05.09.13 @ 9:10 am

Yes he didn’t shoot the ball that well at Marshall.

But hey that could have been the result of having not much help in the form of talented teammates at Marshall.

Surely Pitt will have better players surrounding him. Sort of. lol

Or on the other hand, does this kid drive a Hummer?

Comment by EMel 05.09.13 @ 9:14 am

Desperation causes ppl to do things they wouldn’t normally do.

Coach Ditka might be on to something.

Comment by EMel 05.09.13 @ 9:16 am

PITT apparently just offered this kid.

Comment by EMel 05.09.13 @ 9:18 am

Kid will be back in the burg running with his old buddies. He will probably be suspended before he ever plays. If they wanted rid of him in Marshall WV the temptations are much larger in pittsburgh especially with old buddies in the mix.

Comment by Upittbaseball 05.09.13 @ 10:19 am

52.1% from the line?? It was destiny!

Comment by Dan 05.09.13 @ 10:45 am

Exactly Dan, my thoughts preciously! If he shoots 52% from the charity stripe, he’s definitely a Pitt man and Jamie did the right thing to lock him up for this year.

Comment by pittman4ever 05.09.13 @ 11:03 am

JUST WHAT WE NEED, ANOTHER PLAYER THAT CAN’T SHOOT. 52% FREE THROW SHOOTER. EVEN IF HE PENETRATES AND GETS WACKED AND GOES TO THE LINE, HE WILL ONLY MAKE EVERY OTHER FREE THROW. DOESN’T SEEM LIKE MUCH OF A UPGRADE OVER ZIEGLER. I ALWAYS THOUGHT YOU LOOK FOR SHOOTING GUARDS THAT ARE GOOD SHOOTERS. I DON’T UNDERSTAND DIXON’S RECRUITING.

Comment by Wayne 05.09.13 @ 11:22 am

********

Pitt needs a penetrator. Maybe this guy
is it? Lets forget Ziegler. He was overmatched
and lost in the offensive scheme. Kane
has played a lot of BB. He is
physically mature. He fills a need
on a short term basis. Team needs a
guard who can penetrate. Now lets
turn Slice loose in NYC to find players.

Comment by JR 05.09.13 @ 11:23 am

Gents, The comparison to Zeigler should begin and end with the percentages. I have seen both play in person, and can tell you that Kane is a much more fluid athlete than Zeigler. Whatever it was about Zeigler, he lacked the explosiveness I expected. Kane has that, and while his % is similar with respect to 3’s, everything about his jumper looks much better, and much more fluid. I understand that it’s about results, not looks, but I think if you surround him with better players, and a better paser, like Robinson, we should expect better results.

I understand Chas tempering expectations, after all we are Pitt fans, but this kid will fit much better at the 2 than anyone we have on our roster other than Durand Johnson.

I would love to see a lineup that included Johnson and Kane on the floor at the same time, at the 2 and 3 spot.

Comment by Big Bill 05.09.13 @ 11:24 am

7 assists a game would have led us.

And that placed Kane at Number 8 in the Country !

As long as he doesn’t have a Hummer 2. haha

Comment by EMel 05.09.13 @ 11:43 am

Agree with Big Bill.

This team is going to need some scorers, as we lost our leader scorer Woodie, Adams, Sleepy, Zeigler and Moore. So that group accounted for about 35 ppg. Got to replace that, Kane is a good start.

Maybe DeJuan will show up at more games since his old running mate will be balling with da Panthers.
🙂

Hey this was meant to be.

Marshall’s leading score was a kid name Pittman.

Yep this will be a good thing for Pitt, it’s in the stars.

Comment by EMel 05.09.13 @ 11:57 am

EMel–There hasn’t been anything official so I am not sure Moore is gone–unless there is new news.

Comment by pitt1972 05.09.13 @ 12:02 pm

Upitt, I get the sense that if Pitt convinced the NCAA to let LeBron and Kobe come back and play at Pitt, you would complain that we couldn’t get Jordan and Bird.

Im far from a Pederson fan, but Kane can play ball, and if you haven’t noticed, some of the ‘lesser’ conferences have put teams in the Final Four over the last few years, such as Wichita St.

So go ahead and trash Kane if you want, but know that you look foolish when you comment on a topic of which you clearly have no knowledge.

You do seem to have to have quite the handle on the baseball team. Perhaps you could keep those of us on this board who do not follow baseball as closely up to date on how their season is progressing.

Comment by Big Bill 05.09.13 @ 12:07 pm

IF Kane is to help pitt you must let him play his game do what he does best.
you must not make a sq peg fit into a round hole
like they did to zeigler.
if kane is to help dixon must chane his system some what.
or he will just be another zeigler.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.09.13 @ 12:22 pm

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Cam Wright was the only two guard on roster.

At this late date, Jamie’s options were pretty limited in finding someone who could make an immediate impact at that guard spot. And if he couldn’t bring someone in, He was faced with moving either a small forward or a point guard. Again, no sure thing.

I think the chemistry risk is huge. Red flags abound. First, he does dominate the ball and is a volume shooter. Second, he has NBA aspirations. Not a good fit with Pitt’s deliberate, share the ball offense. We saw what happened with Gibbs two years ago when the team struggled, Gibbs struggled and he realized his NBA dreams were fading…..he turned into a major chemistry problem.

But given his options, Jamie made the right decision to bring this kid in, as risky as it may be…we’ll see how it turns out. Boom or bust?

Comment by Boubacar Aw 05.09.13 @ 12:23 pm

Big Bill, My point was that Marshall isn’t exactly where you go and play if you can play. I hope I am wrong. I just don’t like bringing in a kid who can be a cancer (potentially)… That’s the last thing we need. Baseball won another on Wed night. 6-5 to Ohio but I’d imagine no good pitchers will see the field mid week. As far as Nova, my bet is we take 2 out of 3 and then the big one comes against L’ville. L’Ville is good but so is USF. THey swept us early in the year. I still think we HAVE to win Big East Tourney to get an invite. The folks in high places know a team in the Big East vs. those teams in ACC, SEC, PAC 10 and even Big 12 that are on the bubble the picks go to them because they play a solid schedule. Our Non-Conf was weak less Wichita State who we swept in Kansas. They aren’t the power they were when they consistently went to the CWS but still are solid. Good Luck.

Comment by Upittbaseball 05.09.13 @ 12:25 pm

well the comparisons to zigs are logical. but a quick perusal of central MI’s 2011-2012 schedule vs the thundering herds 2012-13 schedule reveals that Kane played against much stiffer competition last year than zig played year before last at CMSU. I too have seen both players live, Kane has more upper body strength & as good as zigs seemed to be at getting to the basket (sometimes), Kane is better (& a better finisher). He has played against better competition, he is older & more experienced & while he has had his share of academic issues, they should be behind him if he can pull the last 6 credit hours out (who knows he could end up with a free masters degree too). The point made about him being able to hang out with his old buddies should be a concern, although his familiarity with the area should at least allow us to expect him to find his way home after a couple of cocktails as opposed to passed out in his car in front of Magee Hospital… After all, the best Hummers for a college kid are found in a dorm room! Free Throws & his reputation as a bit of a gunner should be a concern as well BUT our lack of experience at the 2 clearly trumped all of the above in HCJD’s mind. Bottom line is that we need buckets, now if only LP could step up (he should be a 15, 5 & 5 man in his Sr. year IMO). If Kane works out it will give DJ, CJ & JN a little bit of breathing room to develop & that aint a bad thang!

Comment by ptbreezeb 05.09.13 @ 1:04 pm

I’ll bet that Kane is at best a 50-50 shot to be on the team at the beginning of the ACC schedule based on attitude and being in familiar territory (i.e., knowing where to go to get into trouble). But, its a low risk move. Even if he’s off the team by the beginning of the ACC schedule, who did Pitt NOT get as a SG because they offered Kane?
JD didn’t get a top-notch, natural SG for next year, and since that didn’t happen taking a chance on Kane had to be his fallback. All we can do is cross our fingers and hope he has finally gotten a clue about life.

Comment by Taxing Matters 05.09.13 @ 1:32 pm

I hope that Kane will be able.

Comment by Dr. Tom 05.09.13 @ 2:35 pm

Was Marshall’s regular schedule easier than Pitt’s pre-conference schedule? Kane should be right at home, scoring up to 33 points against the softies the Panthers bring into the Pete before the real action begins. By January 1 we should all know whether Kane will fit or be a bench player. That is if Dixon doesn’t resort to that failing two-platoon system he used to run players in and out before they have a chance to get settled. With good bench coaching, Kane will have plenty of time to be evaluated before the heavy ACC action begins.

@ notrocketscience, sensitivity after whitening is a big issue for sure. To address the issue, I’ve developed a technique where the patient preps for the procedure for 2 weeks prior to the whitening appointment with a disensitizing agent daily to minimize that problem. You also should have been living on ibuprofin for one day before and two days after your Zoom whitening. That alone would have been a huge help in keeping the problem at bay. In any case, I hope that you got a great result to help rationalize the tribulations you went through afterwards, at least.

This stuff about DeAndre Kane coming home – let’s just not get too syrupy, OK? On the other hand, there is no need to sugar coat this, either.

Having trouble from the stats understanding what the “risk” on Kane is. It is not like kids are banging down our door right now. And while Hofstra is not in the ACC, I cannot remember the last time a Pitt player put up 30 against even St. Francis. The 7 assists per game for a big guard isn’t bad, either, and has to say something about his “selfishness.” Plus, the kid apparently will graduate in 3 years. That also has to tell you something, I would think. So he cannot shoot free throws? At least he won’t have to worry about being shown up by his teammates.

I am actually enthused about seeing this kid play.

With this, and with the addition of “Slice”, the first few months of the Dixon Decade are looking a little better. Perhaps provides us a ray of optimism for the next 9 years and 10 months.

Comment by PO'd Panther 05.13.13 @ 4:38 pm

Kane had 40 in a 3OT CUSA Quarterfinal game that they won. Its hard for me to imagine putting any current Pitt player in a Marshall uniform and watching him score 40 against a CUSA opponent, even if given “free reign.” Maybe Durand Johnson if he hit 7 or 8 3’s. Kane, when he’s on, can really score. When he’s good, he’s real good. When he’s bad, he’s real bad. I’ll take that though. If he’s having a bad night, put in someone else.
