A Commit. An Actual Commit

Clearly this was the immediate impact of rehiring Barry Rohrssen as an assistant. It certainly couldn’t have been anything else involved in recruiting a kid for the last few weeks. Uchebo is going to be coming to Pitt.

So, there is some help on the big man front.

Finally some good news. Way to go Slice.

Abought f k time good job slice

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.06.13 @ 3:22 pm

we wont need a 2 foot tall point guard now
pitt gets its center great now 2 more players.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.06.13 @ 3:26 pm

Newkirk, Artis and Uchebo, now that sounds a little better.

Comment by Dan 05.06.13 @ 3:28 pm

just what the dr. ordered.

Would have to think that (1) promise of much T, (2) having a high school teammate, (3) playing in ACC, and (4) playiing with a fellow countryman (Zanna) all factored into it … just wonder what took so long (guess the visit to Minnesota over the weekend worked to our benefit.)

Comment by wbb 05.06.13 @ 3:32 pm

(1) the Promise of much ‘PT’

Comment by wbb 05.06.13 @ 3:32 pm

just for fun I was looking over at the Minnesota boards and from the beginning they didn’t think they had much of a chance signing him over PITT, which was kind of cool to see.

Comment by rhyno527 05.06.13 @ 3:34 pm

Dan, you forgot Young who may be the best of them all

Comment by wbb 05.06.13 @ 3:38 pm

Good news? This can’t be Pitt? Thank you Barry!

Now, for the new on campus stadium and the change back to Pitt script and we are all good!!

Comment by Dan 72 05.06.13 @ 4:01 pm

@wbb, yes, yes. Completely blanked out. Doing a lot of that lately.

Is it Mike??

Comment by Dan 05.06.13 @ 4:01 pm

We have a REAL RECRUITER for 48 hours and look what happens. This kid probably wanted to sign a month ago but couldn’t find anyone in the Pitt recruiting office to answer the phone. Barry is there one day answers the phone and BINGO!

Comment by Wayne 05.06.13 @ 4:11 pm

Slice is nice !

lol Wayne

He probably told Uchebo to forget visiting Manhattan and walah….you get him !

Comment by EMel 05.06.13 @ 4:17 pm

Per many analysts, Uchebo was the best big man in JUCO available. (was one of the better late signee’s period, former top 100 NC State recruit)

Now we don’t have to play Zanna exclusively at the 5. Which will make the defense a lot better.

And Mike Young won’t have to play 30 minutes/game immediately.

Very good get !!

Hail TO PITT Nice Slice

Comment by 63 team 05.06.13 @ 4:30 pm

How much eligibility does he have remaining?

Comment by DC33 05.06.13 @ 4:35 pm

Nevermind. 3yrs. Apparently,if this kid can stay healthy he could be an asset for PITT. HTP!

Comment by DC33 05.06.13 @ 4:45 pm

DC33 – he’ll have 3 years of eligibility remaining.

Comment by Pantherman13 05.06.13 @ 4:48 pm

With 3 years left he could be a bigger asset than Steven Adams was.

And he’s not a beanpole (not that Adams was either), Uchebo is 6’11” 265lbs.

That’s a spaceeater almost on the order of Aaron Gray. And Slice is known as a very good big man coach (see Gray, Chevy Troutman)

Our big men were more physical back then so hopefully Slice’s return will also return that physicality.

HTP !

This was Uchebo’s vitals coming out of HS

As you can see, he was a 4 star and he’s grown over 2 inches since then.

Comment by CompLit 05.06.13 @ 5:14 pm

Does JJ stay now because he can play the 3 instead of the 4?

Comment by Hoopzebra 05.06.13 @ 5:23 pm

take it easy people. I’m sure Chas was being sarastic about Slice reeling Uchebo in. He was high on Pitt all along but apparently wanted to visit another school.

While Rohrssen should certainly be a plus for Pitt, as i posted above, Pitt was a near perfect fit for Uchebo.

Comment by wbb 05.06.13 @ 5:41 pm

Question:

Do 2 Blew(ui)-itt’s trump 4 Tra(e)(y)von’s ?

Comment by EMel 05.06.13 @ 6:03 pm

After the kid who won at Quayle Hollow on the PGA tour yesterday anything is possible.

Number like gazillion on the Tour.

Drove a rental car from Georgia to Charlotte to get there !!! But made sure he switched out rentals to avoid the $1000 drop off fee. Sounds like Tin Cup.

Comment by EMel 05.06.13 @ 6:07 pm

Frankcan, what’s the scoop with the Washington kid? I’d like to add him to the class, if only to replace Zanna next year.

Comment by marcus of schaumburg 05.06.13 @ 6:25 pm

Joseph Uchebo did his due diligence and checked out all his options. I felt Pitt was the best opportunity for him with Adams leaving. Apparently he eventually came to that realization, with his visits to other schools. I also think having Talib Zanna on the team was reassuring for him and a big plus. This will be good for Zanna as well. He’ll be able to continue at power forward and back up Uchebo at center. Uchebo has 3 years of eligibility remaining, so this could possibly turn our to be an even better get than we may realize.

Comment by Justinian 05.06.13 @ 6:32 pm

marcus have heard nothing but will keep looking.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.06.13 @ 6:50 pm

Anybody hear any more on if JJ and Cam are transferring for sure? Anyone have a feel for the likelihood of them leaving?

Comment by spiritofsection 22 05.06.13 @ 6:58 pm

If academics were the reason that he went to a JUCO ( http://www.chipola.edu ), I hope that he can remain eligible at Pitt.

Comment by xfmrman 05.06.13 @ 6:59 pm

Good news that was so desperately needed. Amazing how this can change my mood and outlook. Let’s hope he stays eligible.

Comment by panther94 05.06.13 @ 7:07 pm

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.06.13 @ 7:21 pm

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.06.13 @ 8:42 pm

So glad it’s a happy day on Pitt Blather. Was getting kind of depressing around here….

Comment by velvil 05.06.13 @ 8:43 pm

I have no delusions that Uchebo is going to replace Adams.
His style of play is better suited for Pitt than Adams, being slower getting up the court knowing your a first round NBA pick but only playing 23 minutes a game and only getting 6 touches. Not being frustrated having his offensive game limited to under the basket like Adams felt limited by his coach in his offense game not being able to face the hoop and putting the ball on the floor or taking the 20 foot jumper.
Hopefully he is at least as good as McGhee, that should not be to much to ask since Zanna cannot play center. The other hope is that Young can start as a freshman because we know Zanna is not a starting 4.
With Adams and Robinson, and Woodall graduated I was very excited, if Dixon left Adams play, about Pitt being a tough match up in the ACC. Adams would have dominated Robinson could provide defense on the perimeter and Young would of added muscle inside that should of been dominated inside.
Ronbinson is the real deal, if Uchebo can provide bulk in the lane he is not going to be like Adams taking 10 points from the opponents between 2010-2012 and 2012-2013 but he can if Young can contribute immediately muscle inside.
Same question were do the points come from. Robinson will add 8 more a game this year but who else.
Despite my dissapointments that I still do not attribute to Adams family-do some research his family is not the destitue family made out in the press (consider they live in New Zealand not yhe U.S. with a strong saftey net – an olymian sister who has made considerable money and 2 brothers who played professional basketball in New Zealand). The 18 siblings was the story he was not a gang member as we know it and he went to a private school. He left Pitt because his NBA status dropped from Addidas summer camp and Prep were he dominated Noles. 23 minutes per game for a first round draft pick sharing equal time with Dante Taylor we need to stop kidding ourselves.
Birch, Zeigler, and possibly Moore and Wright, not to count Gilbert and Johnson.

Comment by pittisit 05.06.13 @ 8:47 pm

I don’t think the cam wright transfer thing is complete bull when fittipaldo is reporting it. he’s a pretty well respected guy. he mentions it here link to sulia.com I’m hoping that link works I’m doing this from my phone

Comment by Rick 05.06.13 @ 8:59 pm

rick i see it or should i saw saw it but not a thing from any one else not any blog or outher sports figure . all so nothing on JJ he might have bad info. but we shall see.

Comment by FRANKCAN 05.06.13 @ 9:15 pm

frankcan, I hear you I was skeptical myself about cam. as for jj I know a kid who goes to Pitt that claims to be friends with jj. he told me jj went home for the summer and won’t come back, so take that for whatever that’s worth

Comment by Rick 05.06.13 @ 9:34 pm

hopefully the cleaning house phase of both bb and fb is over and we can go about building up the programs kids who play hard and want to win (and study).

Comment by Pittscript 05.06.13 @ 11:23 pm

Lots of rumors these days. With tweeter, trolls and whatnot.

One has to only look south to our toothless friend’s blogs about the previous impending implosion of the ACC.

Just wishful thinking, like their toothfairy dreams of missed riches with all those missing teeth.

P.S. If Wright leaves, no big deal, it just gives Slice another scholarship to work with. Don’t see his role expanding much what with Chris Jones as a 2G and Newkirk coming in and Durand Durand could play there as well.

Comment by EMel 05.07.13 @ 1:07 am

What we should be looking for now is an athletic SF or 2G who can break down defenses all by himself (meaning take defenders off the dribble) and if need be put the team on his shoulders and carry them in big moments in big games.

So basically a Junior/Senior version of Sam Young.

BIG GET! If his knees cooperate he should be better than Gary McG (NBA after 2 seasons?)… 1-5: JR, DJ (need buckets!), LP (I’d love to see JJ, NEED BUCKETS), TZ, Uchebo?- MY, CJ, JN, JA off the pine. If CW & JJ go so be it! h2p #8manrotation. Better than we think? Glass is half full. Academic issues should be behind Uchebo. Now he has some transferable credits from JC (lets keep our fingers crossed that summer school goes well… for everyone). Any additional transfers out will be a product of increased competition for PT (& that aint a bad thang right?). Chris Jones may be able to defend like CW with a better handle & more offensive upside! Glass half full – Uchebo & MY will be able to bang with the best of them! Bottom line is Newkirk, Young, Artis & Uchebo is a very reasonable recruiting class – all things considered. Let the horses run (NEED BUCKETS).
